The Nanoha Verse's Bizarro-world - Magical Boy Archaeological Yuuno

#1
Since the fall of the Belkan Republic, the Midchildan Empire has ruled the administered worlds with an iron fist and waged a war of conquest against the rest of the known dimensional-universe.

The Cloud Knight Order is broken, with all but a few knights killed or murdered in genocidal purges. The scant survivors have bravely joined the Rebel movement against the Empire, but they are greatly demoralized.

Jail Scaglietti lives in heaven upon earth, patronized by an Empire which is extremely forgiving of his human experimentation in their greedy desire for his advances in the technologies to create familiars, cloning, artificial mage and combat cyborgs.

Once, Presea Testarossa believed in the rightness of the Imperial cause, and worked as Jail's contemporary in various fields, though she did not realize the truth of his experimentation.

Rendered barren due to an unfortunate accident with a magical energy reactor, Presea could not give her only daughter, Alicia, a younger sibling, and a familiar like Linith just wasn't the same. As well, as a mother of a young child, Presea was horrified by the poor success rate of the Artificial Mage technology, and took it upon herself to correct the problem.

In seeking to create a second daughter, Presea took upon herself the full responsibility for any error in the process, and gave herself sufficient motivation to ensure it worked.

She succeeded, and Fate Testarossa was born.

Unfortunately, this caught the attention of Jail Scaglietti and his backers, who were intensely interested in her Fate Project secrets. It was thanks only to Rebel infiltrators that she caught wind of Jail's dark intentions and managed to escape with her family aboard the Garden of Time.

Now Presea backs the rebels with the fullness of her scientific and magical expertise, while lending them the use of her ancestral home, the Garden of Time, as a base of operations.

The rebel cell with whom she works most frequently is the Takamachi family, the survivors of the Fumo Clan of the Cloud Knight Order. Takamachi Momoko works with Linith to make the Garden a warm home while the others are too busy with their work.

Takamachi Shirou, Kyouya and Miyuki, as knights in the ancient Belkan style, are often away on dangerous missions to fight the Empire, leaving behind Nanoha, the baby of the family.

Determined to help her family in any way she can, Nanoha has taken to learning the Midchildan style of magical combat from Presea and Linith. She is childhood friends with Alica and Fate Testarossa, and Nanoha's nonjudgmental friendship does Fate wonders for feeling just like a normal girl.

Eventually, Alica, Fate and Nanoha became old and skilled enough to take on missions for Presea. Mostly retrieval missions targetting information, resources or recently discovered Lost Logia.

It was on one such mission that they ran across the Millenium Items; strange devices with strange and frightful powers locked away behind arcane puzzles.

But the mission ran afoul of an Imperial Cruiser that should not have been there, and the girls and Lost Logia were seperated and scattered.

Seldom knowing when to quit, Nanoha chased after the Lost Logia on her own, following them to a little-known backwater planet where none of the natives could harness magic, such that none even knew of its existence.

It is here, beaten and exhausted, that she has to turn to a native boy raised in a family of archaeologists, combing a desert for the remnants of their ancestor's magical society.

Yuuno Scrya, though new to magic, grew up on mysteries, discovery and puzzles, and proved capable of solving the Millenium Puzzle and unlocking its forbidden powers. Driven to know the truth about the past and present, Yuuno agrees to help Nanoha recover and control the other Millenium Items that have landed on his world.

But not far behind is Clyde Hallahoun, possessor of the Millenium Eye and Captain of the Imperial Cruiser Athra. Unknown to his superiors, he pursues a rogue agenda to acquire the Millenium Items for himself, that he might resurrect his dead wife Lindy and have his revenge against the Tome of the Night Sky that killed her.

He sends his son, Chrono Hallahoun, as his agent, backed by the twin familiars of his own mentor, Admiral Gil Graham.

Can Yuuno discover the secrets of the Millenium Items and the ruins of his own world's history in time to save his people from the Empire?

Interesting idea, I've got some quick questions about the Yu-Gi-oh cross: In this iteration what exactly do the Millennium Items do? As Puzzle Bearer is Yuuno the host of the ancient Pharaoh's spirit? Can he warp probability in minor ways as Yugi does/did? or are the Millennium items more like Nanoha style Devices and the Pharaoh is the operating intelligence?

This thread is in ideas so that the community can collaborate to answer those questions, not so that we get told by the author what exactly that idea is.

I'd prefer if the Millennium Items paid lip-service to their YGO counterparts, rather than a full on translation. For example, I'm fine if there's a legend saying that the Millennium Items are parts of the seal that holds back Exodia the Forgotten, and that whoever possesses one of them can access and control a fraction of Exodia's power on top of their own. But not the artifacts being Egyptian, or housing pharaoh's with forbidden names, or having keys that lets people enter the minds of other people. Or playing ancient cardGIANT STONE TABLES games.

The Millenium Items could just be a stand-in.

The idea was that I wanted Lost Logia that Nanoha can't just blast into submission, but that Yuuno had to solve like puzzles.

If the Puzzle holds any spirit at all, it might be more like a Unison Device.

oh Ok.

hm, it'd be interesting if it were a Unison device if that were only available at the end of the journey after he's solved a bunch of things and proven truly worthy so it's sort of an 11th hour power up. Though that might not fit with the setup you're looking for.

Right.

The idea only borrows from YGO when it serves the idea.

Egyptian aesthetics? Sure, why not. Worked for Stargate, and cinematic archaeology requires arrid, sandy environments in which to find hidden-yet-preserved ruins.

Guardian monsters used to protect against outside invasion? Absolutely! Might it have become a game for nobility? Maybe, but that doesn't mean Yuuno and Chrono are going to sit down and play with cards.

Aside from the Millenium Puzzle, none of the other items are puzzles, which doesn't seem to serve my idea. Though having Yuuno need to play jigsaw each time might get dull. Maybe the other Millenium Items are actually enormous puzzle-temples like something out of Legend of Zelda? They could be all over the planet, in various sorts of environments.

Yuuno: "I hate water temples!"
