Tell me it doesn't sounds like something that would happen in Naruto!

Black Lightning (Official Version)

Black Lightning is the highest level of Lightning Release.

To master nature transformation for lightning, one must learn to vibrate their chakra at the highest speed and volume to create as much lightning chakra as possible in an instant. Black Lightning stems from refining this process to the greatest extreme, increasing the frequency and intensity of the chakra vibrations to the maximum level possible. Once it reaches the pinnacle, the chakra transforms even further and turns pitch black.

In this state, the lightning chakra is closer to the true lightning of nature. It is capable of leaving flash burns and permanent nerve damage in its victim rather than temporarily paralysis and pain, moving at speeds surpassing ordinary lightning jutsu and even capable of producing thunder claps from the force of their passing.

Shinobi with exceptionally powerful chakra have been known to unconsciously create Black Lightning when performing Lightning Release but it usually happens once or twice in lifetime.

The art itself is a rare type of ninjutsu taught exclusively in Kumogakure. Starting from the Third Raikage's regime, the most promising students of each generations are given the chance to start learning Black Lightning. Those who succeed are given the right to bear a tattoo on their shoulder that says "Lightning" to mark their mastery, making it a well-known symbol of respect in Kumo.

Temporary Paralysis Jutsu (Knyght)

Temporary Paralysis Jutsu

The Temporary Paralysis Jutsu is a D-rank ninjutsu which projects the user's chakra at the chosen target to physically restrain them, binding their bodies as if it was tied in invisible steel ropes. This freezes them in place to prevent any part of them from moving from the position they were in when the jutsu struck. And it can be performed on multiple targets at once to hold them all in place.

The strength of the paralysis depends on the user's level of skill, the number of targets it is being used on and the strength of its victims. As the name suggests, the paralysis is only temporary and a single casting can last no longer than a minute or so before the binding dissolves even at its maximum strength.

This jutsu is commonly learned by genin across all of the hidden villages. They typically use it on for paralyzing wild animals or criminals they encounter on their missions. But it does have its uses in combat to distract an opponent, briefly suppress them in preparation for a greater move or just for a stronger ninja to restrain a lesser one without hassle.

Attempting to cast the jutsu against an opponent too strong for it may not even delay them for a moment, doing nothing but wasting the user's own chakra.

Sai's Imitating Drawing

The Imitating Drawing Ninja Art was invented by Sai, former agent of Root.

Ever since he was a child, he had an incredible talent and interest in drawing and painting. After war tore apart his family and he became one of the orphans inducted into Konohagakure's Root Anbu, he continued to indulge that hobby throughout his ninja training. And he discovered that by infusing his chakra into the ink of his brush strokes he could make the drawings move across the paper as if alive.

Sai learned to use his ink as a medium such as wrapping himself in ink to hide his movements or composing a clone of himself entirely from ink.

With his moving drawings as inspiration, Sai created jutsu to truly bring his drawings to life. By infusing his ink with yang chakra and drawing living creatures, he can animate those drawings to grant them a three-dimensional shape that moves according to his will. They can keep to the same size of the original drawing and can grow several times larger if it suits his needs. And the more pictures he draws then the more of them can be brought to life. Once damaged, the drawings lose all cohesion and revert back to ink.

To ensure that he can always use his jutsu, he arms himself with plentiful supplies of ink, scrolls and brushes. And he practices his drawing so that he can draw his chosen images as fast as others can perform hand-seals for their own jutsu. Unfortunately his jutsu can only take effect for the relatively short period where his chakra remains in the ink which prevents him from simply keeping previously drawn images on hand.

The Super Beast Imitating Drawing animates the pictures of animals. The effects of the jutsu depend on which animals has chosen to draw with different creatures fulfilling different purposes. Lions can be used to attack enemies with fang and claws, birds can be used to survey the land from the sky or act as flying transportation to travel at high speed, mice can quietly move unnoticed for searches and relay anything they discover back to the caster and snakes can constrict their target and assassinate them with their bites.

Sai can draw any animal he knows of and the sheer versatility of the ability makes it Sai's signature jutsu for the many missions he has participated in. He can even combine his intelligent reports with his ink animals, allowing them to send themselves to his chosen target and turn back into written information.

The Super God Imitating Drawing animates the pictures of gods and buddhas. These are humanoid images rather than animal ones and are designed strictly for combat purposes. Divine beings that attack with their bare hands and immense strength, wield the bow with peerless accuracy, shield the wielder with their armored form or cut down their enemies with spear and sword. And their human shape gives them a greater connection to Sai himself, meaning that his own powerful emotions can enhance the strength of the beings he creates.

Amaterasu & Kagutsuchi (Knyght)

The Collector
Amaterasu (Official Version)

This is an unquenchable black flame which is ignited within the caster's line of sight. It is the highest level of Fire Release with flames far hotter than what any other fire jutsu can accomplish, even with the skill and chakra of a master, such that it's likened to the heat of the sun itself.

Amaterasu will burn for seven days and nights or until its target has turned to ash. Its incredible heat and undying flames means that it is quite capable of burning or melting its way through practically any substance given time. Even fire itself can be burned out by the superior Amaterasu.

It cannot be extinguished through normal means and does not require fuel for it to burn so any volume of water will simply evaporate and even removing the oxygen would have no effect. But when it interacts with something flammable, the black flames are quick to spread so that even a small fire can turn into a firestorm that rages for days. And when a human is ignited, it only takes second for them to be completely enveloped in flames and rendered defenseless from the heat and pain.

Unlike ordinary fire jutsu, these black flames will ignite specifically at the target within the caster's sight without traveling the intervening space. They can continually create this fire anywhere within their line of sight even while shifting their gaze, allowing the flames to spread under their direction.

The only way for an enemy to overcome Amaterasu is to seal the flames away or absorb them. Otherwise they would need to intercept the flames with some kind of defence, move to avoid being set alight or remove the burning material but their flesh is caught alight. The caster, however, has the innate ability to extinguish Amaterasu to prevent it from going out of control.

Kagutsuchi (Official Version)

This is the ability to freely apply shape transformation to any and all flames within the caster's sight.

When they perform their regular fire ninjutsu, they can control these jutsu outside of their normal limitations to make them move, expand and change in a ways in all kinds of unpredictable ways that would be supremely difficult to manage otherwise. A fireball can turn into a mass of burning spikes, a flamethrower into a wall of flame or a fiery dragon into a swirling fire vortex. More importantly, the caster is not limited to their own jutsu as they can accomplish the same effects on the fire jutsu of their allies and enemies. Any incoming flames can be turned aside to protect them or turned back on their caster.

And while it can technically be used on the flames that weren't created by chakra, the same can be done with the application of fire chakra and makes it pointless to waste the use of Kagutsuchi on it.

But the true potential of the jutsu is realised when used in conjunction with Amaterasu as they directly complement one another as it allows the caster to go far beyond merely igniting and extinguishing the black flames.

This control can make the fire function like a solid substance to interact with other solids in ways that fire usually can't. It can be shaped into spikes to pierce through an object, into a blade to slice through them or even into arrows to strike from a distance. The flames can even be held in the caster's hand without burning them by preventing the flames and heat from affecting them.

Gold & Silver Brothers (Knyght)

Gold & Silver Brothers

Kinkaku and Ginkaku are the Gold and Silver Brothers, the greatest heroes and villains in the history of Kumogakure.

Truthfully, they are half-brothers born from two different mothers within a year of one another. Kinkaku was named for his mother's golden blonde hair while Ginkaku was named for the silver of his mother. Their father was a man of great vice descended from the Sage of Six Paths and both of his sons were inherited the strength of that ancestry. He trained them in the ways of shinobi until they were old enough to fend for themselves where they left to work as a two-man team.

Even when young, they possessed remarkable talent and power that allowed them to fight against enemies older and more experienced than themselves to succeed in their missions. More than often, they deliberately sought challenges were the odds were against them and still managed to come out on top.

One such challenge was to collect the Treasured Tools of the Sage of Six Paths that had been scattered around the world. They read the stories, sought the rumors and tracked down every single one regardless of how well protected they were or who wielded them. Then, to protect these tools from others, they sealed them within their bodies in such a way that only they would be able to summon them.

Thus it did not take long for them to became known as the Gold and Silver Brothers.

When Kumogakure was founded, the brothers had audacity to invite themselves into the organization. It was an unusual situation as only established ninja clans were joining the hidden villages at the beginning due to their strength and numbers. But their legendary reputation, proven skill and possession of the Treasured Tools were enough of the deal breaker that they were made welcome.

Within the hidden village's first year, they decided that their next greater challenge would be to fight and capture the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox with the Treasured Tools for Kumo. And they did find and fight the Tailed Beast but underestimated its power. Instead of capturing it, they were eaten alive and found themselves trapped within a belly of the beast.

None of their jutsu could overcome its immense, malignant energy and not even the Treasured Tools were of any use from inside it but they continued to fight for their survival. in the meanwhile, the brothers ate the fox's flesh and drink its blood to save themselves from dying of malnutrition or dehydration. Anyone else would have sickened and died from trying it but their heritage gave them a unique resistance, not only surviving but thriving on it.

By eating the chakra-made flesh, Kinkaku and Ginkaku assimilated that chakra into their own body. It altered them to mark their faces with whiskers, increased the quality and quantity of their chakra and, most importantly, granted them a permanent well of the Nine-Tails' chakra.

At any time, these pseudo-jinchuuriki could wrap themselves in a cloak of blood and chakra that turns them into a miniature version of the beast. They only possess six tails' worth of its chakra but are capable of incredible destruction, protected from many types of damage and retain their consciousness without the will of a Tailed Beast dominating their own.

When they returned to Kumo, having their failed mission but stronger than ever, this power was kept secret among the higher-ups. Whenever they used it on the battlefield they ensured that they killed everyone involved to prevent rumors of their ability from spreading. And the ones that did spread were simply considered exaggerated tales of their abilities.

Kinkaku and Ginkaku came to be known as Kumo's twin rays of light during the First Shinobi World War as they fought on the front lines to great effect. They even developed a following within their own hidden village as a number of ninja wished to train under their guidance and fight by their side. Each brother was formed a force of their own ninja - the Kinkaku Force and Ginkaku Force respectively - who went from battlefield to battlefield to wage war against Kumo's enemies.

But when Konoha and Kumo entered talks to form an alliance that could end the war, the brothers were against it. They had no interest in siding with their enemies and believed that they should destroy anyone who stood against them rather than seek peace through concession. In light of this, Kinkaku and Ginkaku attempted to launch a coup d'etat by killing the Second Hokage and Second Raikage during a diplomatic meeting.

The Kinkaku and Ginkaku Forces assaulted the meeting, killed the guards and were even able to murder the Second Raikage. However the Second Hokage was able to kill Ginkaku before escaping the ambush alive.

Enraged, Kinkaku swore vengeance against the Hokage for the death of his brother. Having failed their mission, he was forced to abandon Kumo knowing that he would be branded as a traitor for his actions. especially since the Treasured Tools sealed by Ginkaku were inaccessible even to his brothers, making the Amber Purifying Pot left in Kumo's possession as it was used to hold their tailed Beasts.

What was left of the brothers' followers unified under the name of the Kinkaku Force and went with him into exile. They continued to participate in the war for their own ends and killed everyone who was sent after them.

During the closing stages of the war later that year, the Kinkaku Force was able to confront the Second Hokage once more. Sacrificing himself to protect his team, Senju Tobirama battled them all single-handedly in a final battle that led to the death of everyone involved, including Kinkaku.

The Gold and Silver Brothers would be remembered as the greatest heroes who fell from grace to become the most reviled criminals in Kumo's history.

Explosive Tag (Knyght)

The Collector
Explosive Tag (Official Version)

Explosive tags are a standard ninja tool that consist of a sealing formula applied to a slip of paper that is able to unleash an explosion.

The Explosion Sealing Method is a sealing formula which stores an individual's chakra in an pattern that causes it to react violently when unsealed. Once activated, the explosive tag starts to burn and then the chakra is released in an instantaneous burst of heat, flame and concussive force to produce an explosion. The more chakra sealed within the formula then the greater the force of explosion that is released.

An explosive tag can be activated in a number of ways. The standard method is for the user to channel their chakra into tag to unlock the seal. But it can also be set to detonate on a delay so that it explodes after a specified amount of time has passed, when in proximity to another person to hurt an enemy when they get too close or when they are moved or touched to set a sensitive trap.

If a tag explodes in close enough proximity to another tag then it will cause that one to react and explode as well. The more tags exploding together then the greater the range and scale of the explosion unleashed. Even just setting a tag on fire will cause it to react and explode.

Explosive tags can be combined with ninjutsu to add an extra dimension to using them in combat. Such as changing the coloring of the paper to camouflage it with its surroundings, manipulating the tags to attach themselves to the target, placing them in formation for a multi-directional explosion, and even combining them with other sealing formula for additional effects.

Most explosive tags are created by physically drawing the sealing formula and infusing the ink with chakra to empower it. The specifics of the explosion produced can be altered with changes to the sealing formula such as explosions with only heat or concussive force, focused in a specific direction or produce more light than force.

And charging these tags with nature transformed chakra can produce additional effects e.g. fire chakra that significantly increase the volume of flames produced by the explosion, water chakra can release a burst of scalding steam, earth chakra can fire shrapnel of razor sharp rocks etc.

Those who master the Explosion Sealing Method would be capable of creating the entire formula from their chakra alone. This is practically a required skill for Iwagakure's Explosion Corps who learn to create such explosion with a mere touch.

Only thing we know about the Explosion Corps is that Gari and Deidara were members. I figured that there's a bit more to Corps than just the kekkei genkai wielding members of a single clan like dudes who specialize in explosives of every kind.

Spirit Transformation Jutsu (Knyght)

Knyght

The Collector
Spirit Transformation Jutsu

The Spirit Transformation Jutsu is an S-rank kinjutsu which detaches the caster's soul from their body and grants them conscious control over it, becoming a living ghost.

This transformed spirit is a ethereal copy of the caster that lacks substance and is not bound to the natural forces of the world. They are visible to the naked eye and can even communicate with the living but they cannot touch anything physical or be touched by it. And so they are able to travel by willing themselves to move, flying across great distances and through air, earth and water with great speed.

The purpose of the jutsu is for the caster to possess another person. If they have a specific target in mind then they can find that individual across any distance as their souls are drawn to one another.

By entering their target's body, they are able to seize control and use that body as their own to move and fight as they please. This makes it a useful tool for infiltrating enemy lines by possessing someone who belongs and using them as a tool to gather information or find a specific target.

More dangerously, they can kill the person they have possessed by making the existing soul collapse in itself. Once the original soul is broken, it vacates the body and passes on. However this is not an absolute killing method as it essentially relies on the caster pitting their chakra and soul against that of the individual they are possessing which can result in the death of either one of them, if not both.

There are, however, less harmful uses of this jutsu such as a communicating directly with another person's mind and soul over long distances or sharing their chakra with another person.

Ordinary, removing a soul from its original body results in the individual's death. But this jutsu tethers the soul to the body with an invisible bond of chakra to prevent them from being truly separated from one another, allowing the body to remain functionally alive but in a comatose state. This makes it vulnerable to harm as the caster has no awareness of their body's state or surroundings unless present which means that an enemy could attack it and thus kill them without resistance. To perform the jutsu safely, the caster needs allies they trust to watch over their body or a location where they are safe from harm.

The caster can only remain in this state for as long as they have the chakra to maintain it. The jutsu will constantly drain their chakra until they return to their original body to restore their stamina that they can replenish the chakra that they have lost. If they run out of chakra before returning to their body then they lose that tether and are left adrift until they pass on to the Pure Lands.

And the caster is not entirely invulnerable in their spirit form either. Though they are immune to physical attacks, the same does not apply to chakra-based attacks which are part spiritual energy. Their soul-body disperses if struck by an offensive jutsu and forces them to use their chakra to restore themselves so if it occurs too many times then the caster would die. Barrier ninjutsu are also capable of preventing them from entering or leaving a location in this form as the chakra forms in impassable wall for them.

It was one of the jutsu invented by the Second Hokage, Senju Tobirama, in his research of the nature of the soul as well as the Pure and Impure Lands. Years after his passing, it was learned by Kato Dan who used it to assassinate many of his nation's enemies until he was feared as the Spectre.

Those are some pretty great articles. Although I still think the Spirit Transformation technique must be related to Yamanaka clan in some way. It's basically an S-rank version of the Mind-body switch, those jutsu are way too similar for that to just be a coincidence.

Inspired by it, perhaps. It seems like similar results achieved through different means with the Yamanaka using the mind and Tobirama using the soul. I suspect creating the Spirit Transformation Jutsu led into the Impure World Reincarnation or vice versa.

What exactly is the difference between "using the mind" and "using the soul" when it comes to possessing people with ninjutsu?

Knyght

The Collector
Not sure what you mean. It's basically gonna be the differences between the Mind Body Switch Jutsu and the Spirit Transformation Jutsu since one is literally sending your mind into the target to control them while the other is instead shoving your soul into them to control them. Though there might be more nuances to the mind if there was some kind of super Mind Body Switch but the other Yamanaka jutsu don't really go that route.

What I mean is, is there a meaningful difference between launching your mind into another person's body and launching your soul into another person's body? Are the mind and the soul actually distinct, separate phenomena in the Naruto universe? Can you steal someone's mind without stealing their soul, or vice versa?

I've always assumed they are technically two different things but very closely linked though I can't say I've much more thought into it than that.

Mind=Spiritual energy
Body=Physical energy
Mind+Body=Chakra=Soul

Isn't the whole point of the soul is that it continues to exist once the body has perished? So how can mind + body = soul?

@knight504 - My gut instinct is to agree with you that the mind and the soul are distinct but closely linked, but I also can't really explain how, and I also can't really think of any canon evidence to support that conclusion.

However, to play devil's advocate, I'd actually argue that your theory that the difference between mind body switch and spirit transformation technique is that one uses the mind as a medium and the other uses the soul seems kind of backwards. After all, mind body switch is the technique that kills you if your host dies while you are possessing it, while spirit transformation technique lets you kill your host freely. I'd think that possessing someone with your soul would be riskier than possessing them with your mind.

Have you noticed how all souls summoned back from the Pure world have the same look of when they were alive?
Energy cannot be destroyed. Also, Chakra is Fractal(which is how Kage\Moku Bunshin Memory Transfert and Orochimaru's Orcruxes work).

Body and Mind shape the Chakra which is also the Soul.
Basically, Chakra is the physical manifestation of the Soul.

I wrote much more about this in a previous thread. but I don't remember where.

EDIT: also discussed in this same thread http://thefanfictionforum.net/showthread.php?tid=19305&pid=1171433#pid1171433

It's not really a theory though? For the Mind Body Switch, it's literally said that "one releases their own mind, forcing it into the subject, thus usurping the opponent's body" while the Spirit Transformation is where "the user's own soul is detached and becomes a ghost to possess a specific opponent."

I have been thinking on how the former is somehow more dangerous for the user though. I feel like it's supposed to be because the soul is more "powerful" - for lack of a better word - so it lacks that weakness and the connection between it and its body is far more tenuous in this state. :hmm:

Altered Nova

Well-Known Member
Perhaps mind-body switch is dangerous for the user because the mind is still firmly connected to the body through the soul and Narutoverse operates under the same "your mind makes it real" rules as the Matrix does concerning your mind directly experiencing injury and death.

But spirit transformation technique separates both your mind and soul from the body (since the soul is still conscious and intelligent it must be taking the mind along for the ride) meaning there is nothing to strongly connect them to the body except for the chakra of the jutsu. So because you are so weakly anchored to the body, the "your mind makes it real" phenomena doesn't manifest and you can do whatever you want to the victim.

If this is true, then my headcanon for the technique would further state that it is actually incredibly dangerous to use - not because you can share the victim's injuries, but because performing the jutsu imperfectly will straight up kill you. For example, if your chakra control isn't up to par, or your mess up the jutsu because you are fatigued or distracted, or an enemy interrupts your handseals... then the jutsu anchoring your soul and mind to your body might be too weak and end up breaking prematurely. So there is always a chance you might perform the Spirit Transformation technique and simply keel over dead before your soul can return.

That would tie in with how the jutsu is specifically mention to have a single hand seal but there's still only a tiny number of people who would use it.
