I'd further headcanon that the first time you perform the jutsu is always the riskiest, and a significant percentage of those who attempt to learn the jutsu accidentally kill themselves by severing their own souls from their body. But the chance of death is always there - even if you always perform the jutsu flawlessly, that chakra leash holding your soul to your body wears thinner the longer you maintain the jutsu and the more people you possess, and killing people puts particularly high stress on it. Even veteran users are always at risk pushing themselves too far and simply never coming back... perhaps that might even be how Tobirama died?

Tsukuyomi

Tsukuyomi is a genjutsu of the Mangekyo Sharingan.

It creates a dreamworld where the caster controls all time, space and substance. By manipulating all of the victim's senses, they can make them experience anything they desire by controlling the reality that they perceive. The illusion is only limited by the caster's imagination and knowledge as they can recreate the world as they know it or create their own world with its appearance and rules.

And their manipulation of one's sense of time means that they can extend the experience of the illusion far beyond the times it takes in the real world. While the genjutsu might only last a second in the real world, the victim could experience an illusion that lasts for hours or days entirely at the caster's mercy.

Like any other genjutsu, Tsukuyomi does not physically harm the victim in this sense that it inflicts wounds on their body. However its psychological damage can potentially kill one who lacks the mental fortitude to withstand it. Under the caster's control, they cannot rest or sleep regardless of how much the pain and exhaustion they feel so they are forced to experience every moment of the illusion.

At the very least, one would suffer migraines and mental exhaustion after the genjutsu. But more often than not, the victim's mind would be so thoroughly damage that they immediately lose consciousness and fall into a coma. Some might recovery after weeks or months, some could remain in a coma for the rest of their life and others might simply pass away as their mind breaks under the strain.

Tsukuyomi requires the caster to make eye contact with the target just like Genjutsu: Sharingan. The longer the genjutsu lasts and the more elaborate the illlusion then the more chakra it requires and the greater the strain it places on the caster, mentally and physically.

No ordinary subject is able to resist or escape the illusion. As they have lost all control over their body under its effect, they cannot disrupt their chakra flow or injure themselves to break it. Even if another individual realises that they are in an illusion and tries to break them free before it ends, it is powerful enough to resist such attempts regardless.

Only a Uchiha with the Sharingan would be able to resist its psychological effects or overcome the genjutsu itself depending on their strength. If this victim does overcome the jutsu, it has a painful backlash upon the caster and exhausts them more than a typical use of the jutsu.

If it's at least 4'600kg per band and each band has 7 weights then it's at least 657kg per weight.

I've always wondered how they can be so small yet so heavy at the same time. Is there a material in their world that could be so heavy at that size? Or is the material itself irrelevant and its weight comes from some kind of jutsu? Or something in between with a material that reacts to chakra by getting heavier?

The leg bands have writing on them, I always assumed the weight was caused by fuuinjutsu shenanigans. Maybe a derivative of Earth Release: Added Weight Rock Technique?

What I really want to know is why does the extreme weight only seems to exist when he takes them off? If they are really simulating that extreme of a level of mass then Lee should be cracking up the pavement when he walks on it, falling through wooden flooring in buildings and mutilating everyone he kicks while wearing them.

Doing this one again.

Chakra Metal v2

A chakra metal is a specially made alloy which possess unique properties in reaction to the presence of chakra.

Ordinary substances only react to chakra being flowed through them in relatively minor ways. But by mixing together different metals with other metals or substances, carefully measuring their ratios and influencing that process with the manipulation of chakra, it is possible to create alloys that have all kinds of varied effects.

The most common type of chakra metal is one which perfectly conducts chakra without losing any in transmission or damaging the metal itself. While this would not be wasted on standard sets of kunai and shuriken, it is typically used for more customized weapons meant for long-lasting use such as the tanto provided to chuunin or the katana used by swordsmen.

Then there is that chakra metal which is able to absorb individual's chakra nature when it is channeled into them. Even after the wielder stops focusing their chakra into it, the metal will stay charged as the energy slowly dissipates over time. More importantly, it can even contain elemental chakra that has been transformed into a jutsu to allow the metal itself to produce the desired effect without the caster's direct input.

Other types have more esoteric effects such as becoming heavier and are used to provide small but effective training weights, becoming denser to resist physical force, absorbing chakra to consume incoming jutsu or repel chakra to act like armour.

I think you are really overthinking this. Killer Bee already showed us that it's possible to charge literally any material up with elemental chakra without apparently damaging it when he turned the same ordinary pencil into a lightning bullet twice in a row. Based on that feat I'm fairly confident that Shikamaru could probably pin somebody's shadow to the ground with just about anything pointy if he really wanted to.

I think it would make the most sense to simply state that chakra metal is the best, most efficient material to do that with. It can hold more chakra for longer periods of time and conducts chakra flow without resistance. Basically, you could turn any material into a lightning bullet, but a chakra metal blade would make a bigger, sharper blade that would last much longer. Likewise, you could flow chakra through any material to create an impromptu weapon, but a chakra metal weapon would make for the most efficient usage of your chakra.

In other words, Shikamaru could probably pin someone's shadow to the ground with a pencil but it would likely only hold them for a few seconds because he can only put a small amount of chakra into it which will dissipate quickly, but the trench knife could keep someone trapped for potentially hours because it's made of chakra metal which has a higher potential "maximum chakra density" and can hold that charge much longer.

Yeah I know that's kind of boring, but there is honestly no real canon evidence that there is anything uniquely special about chakra metal, and it would explain why chakra metal didn't end up being nearly as important as it's introduction made it seem like it was going to be.

Well, I starting off thinking about Lee's training weights and the idea that they were made from a special material. Then I thought that you'd probably get the same thing for other types of training equipment since ninja are so much stronger than ordinary humans that their training gear should match that. Something like that it might as well be under the generic name of "chakra metal" and if we have a type that grows heavier and a type that absorbs chakra nature that it'd make sense for there to be other types and blah blah etc etc.

But I probably did go overboard some. :sweat2:

Well, I'm not necessarily opposed to the idea, I just think it's probably a little bit too fanony for the Narutoversity where you usually try to stick as close to the source material as possible. I wouldn't argue against the idea if you included it in a fanfic or something.

Where does one draw the line between medical ninjutsu and other jutsu that affect the body?

Medical Ninjutsu

Medical ninjutsu is a jutsu style which uses chakra to repair any harm the body has suffered by guiding, accelerating and enhancing the body's natural healing processes to restore their physical condition. As a type of Yang Release, it uses chakra mostly composed of physical energy to manipulate the body's cells and biological functions.

Fundamentally, it requires one to convert their chakra into a state that can be accepted by the recipient's chakra system without rejection. Otherwise channeling their chakra into their target would merely harm their body. Doing this allows them to restore the target's physical and mental energy so that they return to a physical state that can better mend their injuries and ailments. It is this requirement to transfer chakra without harm that separates medical ninjutsu from other jutsu that manipulate the body.

Then one sends chakra into a wounded area to make it restore itself by rapidly increasing its healing ability to repair the damaged cells of both external and internal injuries. The greater the injury then the more difficult and time-consuming it is to heal and not every wound can be healed. Scratches, bruises, burns and stab wounds are the easiest wounds to heal, followed by broken bones, torn muscles and severed tendons. The most difficult injuries are ones that are widespread across the body or damaged organs due to the time, effort and chakra required to restore them to a state without danger of death. And a significantly injured or destroyed organ is impossible to heal.

Beyond merely healing wounds, medical ninjutsu can also be used to treat drugs, poisons, sickness and disease by flushing out foreign substances, detoxify bodies and treat negative physical symptoms.

This ninja art is considered one of the most difficult as it requires precise chakra control, above average intelligence and advanced medical knowledge to effectively use it to heal without accidentally causing more harm. Those who specialize in medical ninjutsu - as well as other fields of medicine - are known as medic-nin.

And while it is known for being used to heal others, it works best the user's own body rather than that of another person as the chakra does not need to be changed to support a foreign chakra system and has direct access to the wounded area. In addition to healing one's own body, medic-nin typically learn jutsu that allows them to enhance their own bodies to better survive battle such as activating adrenal glands for surges of adrenaline, stimulating the nervous system to enhance their natural reflexes, triggering sweat glands and muscle to lower body temperature and other such manipulations.

Advancements in medicine and specialized training for medic-nin during the last century have led to the development of cooperative medical ninjutsu. By having training medic-nin work together on a patient, they are able to perform feats of healing that would be impossible for any of them individually such as regrowing lost flesh, healing internal organs or reattaching severed limbs. However these procedures can take hours to perform and are far more taxing than an ordinary healing session on everyone involved.

Fuuinjutsu is essential for this practice and is more closesly associated with medical ninjutsu than any other ninja art. As the primary role of fuuinjutsu is to seal out-of-control power it allows medical chakra to flow in a controlled state even when being provided by multiple users at once. Furthermore, fuuinjutsu can help the body remain in stable state when injured to avoid any further decline in health as well as sealing off afflicted body parts.

And just as an antidote can also a poison, medical ninjutsu can also a weapon in the right hands. The most obvious example of this are chakra scalpels which creates an extension of chakra from the user's hands. Often mistaken for wind release, this jutsu is actually composed of non-elemental yang charged chakra. Despite the name, a chakra scalpel is not actually sharp. Rather, the "blade" selectively severs the chemical bonds holding together any cells which it passes through. Chakra scalpels offer several advantages over conventional surgical instruments - Firstly, because the chakra scalpel does not actually cut living tissue, the lacerations it creates are much cleaner and finer than those created by even the sharpest wind blade, making them much easier to heal with other medical ninjutsu such as the mystical palm technique. And secondly, because the use decides what cells to sever and which to pass through harmlessly, a chakra scalpel can be used to operate on internal organs and tissue without causing unnecessary damage and while completely eliminating the risk of infection.

In addition, the very same properties that make the chakra such a versatile and powerful medical tool also make it a very effective weapon, although the chakra control and focus needed to wield them under such stressful conditions is quite high. In heated combat, even the greatest medical-nin won't be able to exert the precision needed to make fatal cuts, but it can still effectively cut muscle tissues and tendons, rendering the target immobile. No amount of body hardening or muscle training can protect someone from the effects of a chakra scalpel - if they are made of cells, they are vulnerable. Furthermore, reinforcing the hands with chakra is relatively easy for a ninja already skilled enough to fight with chakra scalpels, especially as they are already channeling chakra into their hands to use the jutsu in the first place, so a truly skilled medical ninja can not only use their hands for inflicting deadly wounds but also for blocking and deflecting swords, kunai and other ninja weapons.

And being able to manipulate bodily functions means that they can force their target's body to experience reactions that could hurt or kill them. One could cause their blood to clot within their veins, weaken the integrity of their bones, rewire their nervous systems or even cause cellular death throughout their body. While most medic-nin are best suited for support roles rather than battle, those with enough skill can be remarkably deadly enemies to face.

Most Famous Medics

Tsunade - The Slug Princess of Konoha's Sannin will undoubtedly be remembered as the greatest healer in history. Possessing a natural talent for chakra control, a keen intellect and a deep fascination with medicine, Tsunade was perfectly suited for the role of a medic-nin. She is a genius of medical ninjutsu who achieved greater contributions and achievements during her lifetime than anyone else had in centuries. This was especially true during the Shinobi World Wars where her medical skills were relied upon to save many lives.

In the Second Shinobi World War, Tsunade regularly fought on the front lines to protect her comrades. She healed their injuries both during and after battles to keep them alive and treated many different types of wounds, sicknesses and poisons used in the war. And as feared as she was for her superhuman strength, her ability to use medical ninjutsu in close combat could be just as dangerous. Then in Third Shinobi World War, she worked almost exclusively within Konoha rather than participating in battle. Yet her reputation as the greatest medic-nin only grows as she nevertheless developed new drugs, antidotes and medicine, trained more medic-nin, wrote advanced medical articles and create new medical ninjutsu up until the conclusion of the war.

She retired after the war as both a ninja and medic. She left Konoha with her chuunin apprentice, Shizune, and chose to travel the world having fulfilled her duties to her hidden village and nation. Even so Tsunade would go on to create her greatest medical ninjutsu yet, Creation Rebirth.

Haruno Sakura - She was the one of Tsunade's apprentice and proved herself to be the perfect successor as she learned all of her master's medical and combat skills. Her greatest achievement was completing the Strength of a Hundred Seal herself and using its chakra for the Creation Rebirth. While this was not so great as Tsunade inventing these jutsu, Sakura was able to master them before she was even twenty years old which made her a far greater healer than Tsunade herself at that age even if she didn't truly surpass her master until years later. Completing the seal in the Fourth Shinobi World War even allowed Sakura to become a more powerful fighter as she could use even more chakra to enhance her strikes without fearing that she would run out of chakra instead of holding back to carefully conserve it.

Yakushi Kabuto - Kabuto's own skill as a medic-nin is often overshadowed by his history as a spy and war criminal but he is considered by some to be the equal to Tsunade or her successor, Sakura. He spent most of his career using these skills almost entirely for the sake of self-preservation or preserving the victims of experimentation rather than simply healing the wounded, but that made him a more deadly fighter than most medics as he wielded those skills in battle.

One of his best medical ninjutsu was his self-invented Yin Healing Wound Destruction. It is named as such because it does not require yang chakra but regular chakra, meaning that it has far more mental energy than other medical ninjutsu. When Kabuto focuses his chakra into the area of the body that he anticipates a wound, it uses that mental energy to trick the cells into preparing for cellular repair before it has even been injured something that would negatively impact the body if tried with yang chakra. By building up a lot of chakra for this "pre-healing" it means that once the attack lands, it instantly starts to heal the wound even as the damage is being inflicted. This means that there is no delay in recovering from injury and grants an element of surprise as Kabuto counterattacks. Its only drawbacks are that it consumes far more chakra than an ordinary medical ninjutsu and if Kabuto fails to anticipate where the attack is going to hit then he suffers its full effect and wastes a lot of chakra for nothing.

Kabuto's medical skill was even pivotal to his later success as he delved into Orochimaru's research to assimilate the cells of other ninja, adopting their abilities for his own to make himself into a far more dangerous ninja than anyone expected.

I'd say the line between medical jutsu and other jutsu that affect the body is the need to convert the chakra to be accepted by a foreign body. Basically, every medical ninja must master the Chakra Transfer Technique; because pushing your chakra into another person without using that technique is also known as Gentle Fist Style.

This requirement is the only thing that really makes sense to me, because there are plenty of jutsu that logically should require a great deal of medical knowledge to use but aren't classified as medical jutsu. For example, the Raikage supercharging his nerves with lightning chakra, or the Akimichi clan converting their fat cells into chakra and vice/versa. I'd imagine it would be very easy to hurt yourself with those jutsu if you didn't have a decent understanding of basic anatomy and biology.

In other words, to be classified as a medical jutsu, a technique must at least theoretically be usable on another person.

Makes sense. Also explains the high-level chakra-control necessary

Subscribing it to headcanon.

I know it's a common shounen anime trope, but Naruto is slightly more scientific with it's magic system then most, so I'm curious as to how gorging on inhuman amounts of food to restore your chakra levels works. Wouldn't Tsunade's recovery be limited by the capacity and speed of her digestive tract? Did she use a special medical jutsu to enlarge her stomach and intestines? Did she use a jutsu to increase the speed and efficiency of her metabolism? Is she going to obliterate some poor innocent toilet when she's done with that enormous meal?

Was Tsunade unable to regenerate her lower half because she was too low on chakra, or is such extensive regrowth beyond the limits of even Strength of a Hundred Jutsu: Creation Rebirth? Or perhaps the strain on the user's body would be too much?

I had forgotten that Sakura spread the Strength of a Hundred Seal to Obito. That definitely supports my theory that medical jutsu must be usable on other people and that all medical ninja are required to learn the chakra transfer technique.

That's what I'd put my money on.

As Creation Rebirth was said to be able to regenerate both organs and limbs (or "all organs and all tissues") she should technically have the ability to recover even from that much damage. I'd say it's just that she'd reached the point where she just didn't have enough chakra to pull it off. It probably didn't help that she was being crushed by a giant tree branch at the same time.

Creation Rebirth was also said to reduce the user's lifespan when used. If the relatively small amount of cellular division needed to repair a cut to the heart is enough to cause concern to Shizune, then it's possible that creating the enormous amount of new cells required to regrow half of one's body would straight up kill the user.

Knyght

The Collector
But would that actually stop the jutsu? I'd expect it to keep trying to regenerate her injuries until her chakra's exhausted or she hits her expiration date unless she deliberately stops it and she had more than decade's worth of life left in her too. Shizune's concern is understandable when any use of Creation Rebirth inevitably means a shortened lifespan and Tsunade's someone she loves who was already in her 50s.

I feel like the creation rebirth jutsu needs to be explained in more detail since it works a bit differently and breaks one of the normal limitations of medical ninjutsu - rather than repairing the damaged cells, it replaces them by stimulating rapid cellular division, which means it can regenerate destroyed vital organs and replace amputated flesh.

I also see that you lifted most of my chakra scalpel article. That's fine, but man, rereading it is kind of painful. It's way too long and clunky. It needs some serious editing.

I usually end up redrafting again when I start linking to manga scans so that'll definitely get cut down later. And I'm working on Creation Rebirth as we speak so I'll add that onto the end of this Medical Ninjutsu one when they're both done.

Added a section for Sakura to the previous article.

Creation Rebirth

This is a the pinnacle of all medical ninjutsu, created by the Slug Princess Tsunade.

Creation Rebirth uses a vast amount of chakra to stimulate all proteins in the body and accelerate cell division to rebuild them, allowing it to regenerate practically any body part when injured or destroyed. Flesh and muscle are regrown, bones knit back together, nerves are remade and blood is replenished. Even organs can be completely rebuilt and functioning when destroyed and amputated limbs are restored back to normal.

Unlike ordinary medical ninjutsu which can only repair cells, making cells regenerate is a far superior type of healing. One who wields this jutsu in battle is near impossible to kill. Tsunade was inspired by Senju Hashirama's unique ability to recover from injuries without needing hand-seals.

Creation Rebirth itself is intended as a short-lived jutsu which is activated to regenerate all of the wounds that Tsunade has suffered in battle and then stops once the body has been restored to its normal state.

However cells are only able to divide a finite number of times in one's lifespan so speeding up cell division allows them to survive immediate lethal injuries while shortening their life in the long term. Thus the more numerous and severe the injuries one suffers while using Creation Rebirth then the closer they ultimately come to death. Moreover, regenerating wounds so quickly strains the body which can render it weak and slow as soon as the jutsu ends, potentially leaving the user vulnerable.

Unfortunately, the amount of chakra required to activate such an extreme level of healing would exhaust almost anyone to death. To overcome this, Tsunade invented the Strength of a Hundred Seal.

Strength of a Hundred Seal

This S-rank fuuinjutsu is created by using extremely delicate chakra control to continuously amass chakra into a seal. One focuses a portion of their chakra into the shape of a sealing formula on their forehead at regular intervals to store it within the developing seal.

The greatest difficulty is when adding more chakra into the seal as they must prevent any chakra from leaking from it while carefully adding chakra to the sealing formula without disrupting it. The more chakra one tries to add at once then the harder it is to successfully seal, and the more chakra already contained in the seal means the greater the resistance as more is added so it becomes increasingly difficult as it reaches completion. At the same time, the longer the gap between intervals then the more chakra is lost from the seal in the meantime which extends the overall time it takes to complete it.

The sheer amount of chakra required for the seal to reach full capacity means that it takes years of effort and very few have the level of control required to succeed, even among medic-nin.

Once the seal reaches it full capacity, it becomes a diamond shaped marking engraved upon the user's forehead as it becomes permanent part of the bearer's chakra system. Just as Creation Rebirth was inspired by her grandfather's healing ability, the seal's shape was inspired by the marking her grandmother wore and was once a symbol of the Uzumaki Clan.

As the culmination of years of gathering chakra, it contains a truly vast amount that surpasses what even the most powerful shinobi could possibly produce at once. Its name symbolizes how it contains the chakra of a hundred versions of themselves.

Although this chakra is intended for Creation Rebirth, it is not restricted to this and can be used as fuel for any ninjutsu. One can be share the seal's chakra with another individual to provide them with chakra far beyond their normal limits or induce Creation Rebirth within their own body for a life-saving treatment.

Tsunade in particular learned to use the Strength of a Hundred Seal in conjunction with her slug summon, Katsuyu, to create the Immense Healing Network. By channeling her medical chakra through Katsuyu's clones, she is able to transfer her it into whoever they are attached to to heal their wounds and restore their stamina without being physically present.

Once all of the chakra within the seal has been exhausted, the seal vanishes from sight. It will then automatically draw in chakra from the bearer's body to replenish itself until its diamond marking reappears. However, unlike when the seal is first created, it does not need to be filled to its full capacity to be restored and the bearer can channel as much chakra into the seal as they desire without resistance.

Creation Rebirth: Strength of a Hundred Jutsu

This is the next stage of Creation Rebirth. By releasing the Strength of a Hundred Seal in its entirety and maintaining its presence, its immense chakra infuses every cell in her body to enact an ongoing regenerative effect which allows her to receive all kinds of injuries in battle without ever needing to slow down or stop as she immediately heals.

Moreover, this constant regeneration allows her to draw out as much of her superhuman strength as possible. She removes all physical restraints to unleash a hundred percent of her strength - magnified by her perfectly chakra control - to unleash more force than humanly. This comes at the cost of tearing her muscles and breaking her bones with every single blow but these wounds are instantly healed before they can debilitate her.

On the other hand, one's chakra and lifespan is used up at a far faster rate than merely using Creation Rebirth so it helps one fight at the highest peak but draws them ever closer to death.

The second databook says that CB can reconstruct all organs and tissues but the fourth databook says CB:SoaHJ can fix the body unless vital body parts are affected or very deep wounds are present. To what extent should Tsunade's jutsu be able to heal the body, do you think?

Altered Nova

Well-Known Member
I'd say that it can reconstruct all organs and tissues but there are limits. Like, stabbed through the heart is no issue, that heals right up. But heart ripped clean out? Probably survivable but you'll need a lot more chakra and it might take a moment to fully regrow. Likewise, replacing enough flesh to fill in small lacerations and perforations and replace burned skin and whatnot is easy, but regrowing your severed legs would be much less certain.

Also, Creation Rebirth duplicates the effect of Kabuto's pre-emptive healing, which itself reduces the final damage
