A new awards thread, so that I can finally put up all of the lovely comments the judges made for you guys.

New IF scores will go in here from now on, and the old thread will remain as a discussion thread here.

Remember, NO COMMENTS!

IF1 will go here, next post is IF2, etc.

IRON FIC 1: The world doesn't have to make sense

Zero Requiem: Errata (Code Geass)--Iron Ficcer Mereo Flere
English: 18.667
Theme: 18.667
Details: 15.667
Story: 19.333
Other: 18.333
TOTAL: 90.667
Definitely a fantastic piece, the reviewers raved about how cleverly the themed was turned on it's head.

Raindrops (Naruto)--Iron Ficcer Andrew Joshua Talon
English: 18.333
Theme: 17
Details: 17.333
Story: 16.667
Other: 17
TOTAL: 86.333
A very derivative piece, AJT went in an unexplored direction and mixed a bit of his Alt-Canon (an alternate alternate?) into his submission. The result was interesting, to say the least.

A WINNER IS FOUND! Congrats Mereo Flere, you are the winner of the first Iron Fic contest!
Oh, right, judges: if you notice that I don't have your comment up, I'd appreciate it if you sent it to me. The more feedback the authors get, the happier they are.

IRON FIC 2: Never fight alone

Things that Explode (crossover)--Iron Ficcer Vesvius
English: 17
Theme: 8.667
Details: 14
Story: 11.667
Other: 16
TOTAL: 67.334
Not completely unexpected, Vesvius' entry was a multi cross. Alas, the story focused too much time on the banter and not enough on the the plot. Still very amusing, however, and a very odd definition of teamwork (not a bad thing!).

Grunt said:
Things that explode:

My, quite an interesting array of tastes that one brought forward. Quite refreshingly presented, in a way that pleases the eye.

The slightly unhinged taste of the different parts accented the humorous note of the whole quite nicely.

Strangely the mix, while the best thing about the whole dish, was also the worst part. In a paradoxical way, the randomness of the mix and the presentation of its individual parts did not clash, yet left a bitter after-taste.

A shame, for an otherwise so refreshing dish.
Still a Coward (Tales of Vesperia)--Iron Ficcer Mereo Flere
English: 19
Theme: 17.333
Details: 10
Story: 10.667
Other: 14.333
TOTAL: 71.333
Another good showing from Mereo Flere, but the shortness of the piece means that it becomes all but impossible for non-Tales fans to understand.

Ambush (Yggdra Union)--Iron Ficcer Megaolix
English: 15.333
Theme: 18.333
Details: 14.667
Story: 16
Other: 17
TOTAL: 81.333
Amusingly enough, only a single person wrote for the series I based the challenge on. Megaolix did an excellent job at portraying the necessity of working together against a superior enemy.

Grunt said:
Ah, the second entry, coming forth with a surprisingly common recipe, secure in the confidence that skill and ability will prevail.

Here one must I admit that my own experience with this kind of dish is quite low, since I never had the chance to play with it.

Delicate Handling did wonders for this dish, bringing out a quite amazing taste of Atmosphere.

The way the tastes followed one after another was a bit predictable but still delicious.

The ending was, not entirely unexpected either, but the warm and fuzzy feeling the taste of it left behind was remarkable.

Grunt said:
Verdict: The Winner of this Iron Fic, in my mind, is äAmbushô. äThings that explodeô was hurt by its own premise, though Iæm sure with a bit more planning the mix will become only better with time.

Alas to give the credit where it is due, namely to Megaolix...*burp* Ambush was delicious.
And without further ado, I announce the obvious: MEGAOLIX, YOU ARE TFFs SECOND IRON FICCER! Congratulations!

IRON FIC 3: With FIRE!

Burned Out (Touhou)--Iron Ficcer Megaolix
English: 16.667
Theme: 15.333
Details: 11.333
Story: 14.667
Other: 13.333
TOTAL: 71.333
Iron Ficcer Megaolix made an attempt to claim a second crown here, but alas! The judges unanimously agreed that the lack of details surrounding Mokou's situtation made this a tough dish to swallow, making it an acceptable meal but not a tasty one.

Purifying Flame (Warhammer 40000)--Iron Ficcer Grunt
English: 15.333
Theme: 17
Details: 18
Story: 16.667
Other: 18
TOTAL: 85
Served piping hot, with a side dish of "heresy!", former-judge and now Iron Ficcer Grunt made good use of his experiences as a judge. Awkward punctuation in the recipe made for slight confusion, but overall the judges found the dish exciting.

The totals are in: the Emperor protects, and Grunt is the next winner! Congradulations, Grunt!

IRON FIC 11: IN SPAAAAAAACE!

Eternal Darkness: Sanity Revived--Iron Ficcer ellf
English:19.83
Theme:19.67
Details:18.17
Story:19.5
Other:17
TOTAL: 94.17

Andrew Joshua Talon said:
The exposition at the start seemed generic and was far too informative. Telling, not showing. However, things got better. I got a real feel for the characters and the comradery of the unit. The suspense building was decent and the action well described. It is definitely something I wouldn't mind reading again.
Cornuthaum said:
English: 20 - All Is Well.
Theme: Oh wow, the intro glued me to this fic and it didn't let go afterwards.
Details: Character descriptions, character actions, character interaction, creeeeeeeeepyness all around, Raptor-approved.
Story: It starts creepy with the intro, gives us a cliched "silent station" moment (that's the half-point off, I don't like that trope <<). Cool Team Vs. Zombie action followed by Creepiness (capital C and all).
Other: "The dead do not walk again." I laughed. And then I shivered. And then I contemplated borrowing a gamecube and playing the game. This fic achieved the goal of all game fanfics: Make the reader want to play the game. And damn, I do.

The Landing--Iron Ficcer Rooster
English:19.67
Theme:18.33
Details:17.33
Story:16
Other:15
TOTAL: 86.33

Andrew Joshua Talon said:
As a fan of old school scifi, such as Heinlein's work, this did appeal to me a great deal. I loved the detail of the assault and the miltech speech, and the setting was nice. Unfortunately, you could just plug any military stereotypes into the place of the characters and the story would be unchanged. And without characters to connect to, I have no reason to be invested. Still, not a bad effort.
Cornuthaum said:
English: All is well, so.
Theme: ORBITAL ASSAULT! This is awesome, I love this theme, and therfore, 20 of 20.
Details: Landing craft anxiety paired with the unforgiving deadliness of space (and, of course, enemy fire) are really fleshed out and make the characters seem alive, alas, the characters have no... character. They're names.
Story: It's a lot like the scene from Saving Private Ryan, and carries the desperation any assault against a well-fortified position brings.
Other: I've seen better orbital assault descriptions... many, in fact. It's too much Saving Private Ryan IN SPACE (come on, lunar dust in their weapons? What the hell are they using? This isn't WW2 and gunpowder.) For lack of a better comparison, take a look at the Gaunt's Ghosts series in the 40k-verse, they have a lot of orbital drop action going on.
Yggdra Union: IN SPACE!--Iron Ficcer Megaolix
English:19.33
Theme:17
Details:17
Story:17.67
Other:16.33
TOTAL: 87.33

Andrew Joshua Talon said:
Due to a lack of knowledge about the source material, I found it hard to connect with the characters. However, the piece was well written, appropriately dramatic, but the ending seemed a bit empty. Overall though, nicely done.
Cornuthaum said:
English: Points off for missing commas and strange wordings here and there (esp. concerning the incantations)
Theme: Gundamesque mass battle. Neat. Leader vs. Leader, the usual. Doesn't have me dancing with excitement, but it's a proven design.
Details: Very cool descriptions of both the mass combat and the individual attacks, but points off for the extremely abrupt cessation of the battle (super flashy attack prep that takes a third of the story, only to gutter out in two lines?)
Story: Kingdom vs. Kingdom IN SPACE, I guess, not knowing the source material. Not like the story is forthcoming with explainations anyways.
Other:? Cool mecha combat, cool one-liners, I am satisfied.
Ellf is FAR and away the winner, and takes the lifetime achievement award as well. Fantastic job!

While interesting, I would have to say that this story doesn't quite fit the theme of Last Stand. Where is the resistance? I only see submission here. Because the concept of last stands require a stand, I had to be quite harsh with the theme score.

English is fine in terms of spelling, but it doesn't quite flow properly. Outside of that, I have to say it's an interesting lemon fic based on masturbation. Like a guilty dessert that you sneak eat, it is sweet but isn't good for you in terms of sugar and guilt.

This is my judgment and I stand by it.

Star Wars has alot of possibilities in terms of glorious last stands and battles. However, one should note that last stands are called that for a reason. It is the 'last' time you'll be doing it. Surviving or winning tends to mean you'll be doing it... again. Which makes that 'last' stand hardly last.

Also, you have the small issue with spelling here and there, as well as tenses. And when you've been spelling numbers, it catches the eye when you just use a number at the end instead of spelling it. In addition, it feels better if you go with past tense, instead of present. There is also the fact that you keep using the name instead of attempting to describe the character(s). There is personality, but that of a faceless/'nameless' soldier effect here.

This fic has potential, but the execution could have been better with more polishing. This fics reads like an omelet that is slightly overcooked in places, and slightly watery due to it not being fully cooked in places.

This is my judgment and I stand by it.

I'm not quite seeing it in terms of Last Stands. How is it a stand when the Kingpin is resigned to his fate, and Spiderman is there to murder him in coldblood? The story is good, don't doubt that, but the theme doesn't quite fit in here.

Commas are also your friend, really. Outside of a minor typo in judgment, spelling is fine. But you could stand to use commas and periods to break up sentances. happy.gif

This is sort of like ordering a hefty lunch or dinner, only to get a breakfast meal of eggs and bacon. Excellent fic, but theme could have been better done.

While this is a -post- defeat, in a way... it does fit the theme of Last Stand, because the outlook is grim and they likely will not live long. But, they will go down fighting. I do feel for the two men, as they radiate friendship that comes from knowing each other for some time.

And it is clear that there is some thought and research into the fic with the little details. Outside of minor spelling errors, the text flows smoothly.

This fic is much like having crumpets with earl grey tea that had some brandy mixed in, stout stuff. Much liking for it.

Minor typos do NOT detract from this little battle between the Imperium of Mankind and Chaos! Sadly, it looks like there shall be blood for the blood god, and skulls for the skull throne tonight as the Imperial Guard are no match for Chaos Marines and their Dark Masters.

This is akin to eating a steak, cooked perfectly, with just a hint of blood as you cut it. Just watch out for typos and such, and I would more than enjoy reading your fics in the GrimDark future that is Warhammer 40K.

There is some minor issues with the flow of text, but that comes from being a stream of conciousness fic from the perspective of the protagionist. I also suspect that Gilgamesh would have called Archer "Faker", and Emiya Shirou "Mongrel" instead of "Thief"... but that's quibbling. happy.gif

I'm also surprised that he refers to Saber as Saber given that he knows her real name and has known it since the last war. Fate/Zero... num.

This is an interesting AU path, and yes, it is Gil's last stand. On the other hand, they'll need to face each other afterwards for the Grail. happy.gif

While the theme doesn't quite fit. It is amusing to see someone's reaction after they die from said last stand. Even if it's not quite the final last stand. But that's more Marvel/DC/comics in general than you. I do get the feel of Jubes, even if it's death pretending to be her.

Outside of some minor spelling errors, the text flows very well. In my eyes, the only thing that hurts this fic is that there is no hint of what the Last Stand was like. But it stands well on its own outside of that issue. And yes, it IS a terrible thing if you do end up as a Summers... but you pretty much get Plot-Armor the likes of which is on par with that of Sues.

While a zombie fic almost writes itself as a Last Stand fic, there is the matter of it seeming like a tell someone story than a show someone what happened. The dreadful show, not tell issue that pops up now and then.

This sort of fits the theme, but it is a bit weak and could have used some fleshing out to properly fit the theme of a Last Stand. Which kind of needs there to be a stand, and it's quite final. Last is last, after all, ne? And survival or even winning makes it not the 'last' one.

Spelling and such loks fine, the details are there, the story does flow... but as noted, there are some issues as above. Much like a pizza, it is hard to get a zombie fic wrong... but sometimes, the toppings don't quite work together well, y'know?

While this was submitted pass the deadline, I feel it wouldn't be fair to you not to grade it. It's up to Watashiwa to allow the grade or not... but at least you'll know what I thought of the fic, yes?

Outside of such things as vindaloo's being better off as vindaloos and minor spelling issues. But that's more a side effect of the time constrain that you had, and I can't say much there.

The fic has a certain Red Dwarf feel to it. It truly does, you held up the spirit of the show. Whether that is a good thing or not, I'll leave that to future generations to judge. It doesn't quite meet the theme, but then... it's not quite the Last stand of many stands? Yes? Admitedly... this IS Rimmer, so that stand might have been his last attempt at such before he manned up and was made into Arnold "Ace" Rimmer. happy.gif

Much like a lamb vindaloo, this fic warms me up for nostalagia reasons. I wish they would show Red Dwarf again or that it hadn't ended.

This is my judgment and I stand by it.

And with that, Cornuthaum scoops another IF! Great work!
