Or the only reference books officially translated to English thread.

I recently purchased both these reference books from Amazon and just got them in the mail. I'm going to be reading them and posting various interesting details and observations. If anyone would like me to transcribe a particular subject, character or jutsu's information then feel free to make a request.

To begin:

* Amagakure has no academy and no traditional ninja ranks. I wonder how they organize their shinobi? Surely they must have a chain of command, and it would be rather inefficient if they don't have official ranks and a hierarchy.

* The Guardian Shinobi Twelve, the organization who were tasked with defending the Fire Lord and of which Asuma was a member, are disbanded. I wonder who guards the Fire Lord now?

* The databook has a rather glaring error in the character data key. It shows a slightly incorrect symbol for Iwagakure and calls it "Ishigakure". How did they fuck that up? That incorrect symbol is repeated on each Iwa-nin's character page next to their names, but the correct symbol is still shown on each of their headbands on the same freaking pages!

* Tenten's character page includes one rather amusing line.

Through daily training, Tenten has sharpened her skills and increased the myriad of weapons she has at her disposal. Her prowess even has the Akatsuki dumbfounded.
Now I have a mental image of all of Akatsuki being crowded around Zetsu, watching his recorded footage of Tenten fighting Kisame's clones. As she unseals her weapons they flinch back in shock and start shouting: "What?! How did she do that?!" "Incredible!" "With skills like those, she must have an enormous bounty on her head." "Jashin would be very pleased if I sacrificed this powerful woman!" "We must discover her secrets!"

Meanwhile back in Konoha, Tenten suddenly shivers and is overcome with the terrifying thought that she had gained some very unwanted attention from some very scary people. 'No, I'm just being paranoid. I'm not an important person nor do I have any enemies, so no one would be out to get me... right?"

* The old Grandma Cat in that ruined city doesn't just sell supplies to the Uchiha clan. She's the chief of a clan of black marketers who deal in ninja weapons. Her ninja tool store is known throughout the five great countries and she sells weapons to many important clients. They are famous for their collection of rare scrolls. The Uchiha have been their customers for a long time.

* The official doctrine of Jashinism is "Thou shalt kill thy neighbor."

* Gai prefers weapons without blades. I wonder why. Maybe he doesn't like the sight of blood?

So not only is there black market bingo book place where Kakuzu gets his bounty money from but apparently there are cat people who sell high quality weapons. Sure why not. Wait a sec, if there are cat people then is there a cat sage?

Tenten actually has something that matters?

Gai preferring weapons with no blades is for the sole purpose of beating the youth into people via nunchaku. It is one of the many teachings of the Gaikage.

Tenten can impress the Akatsuki but still doesn't have a last name.

Yep.

You mean like most of the S-rank ninja we're shown? Not having a last name is one of the signs of badassery.

I probably should have done something like this with my own copies instead of throwing around tidbits in various threads. This seems like a better place for it so I'll gather up what I've already posted and put it here.

They aren't cat people, the grandma wears fake cat ears. The black cat ears ornament signifies her status as the chief of the clan.

Wait, is she human or not? The cat ears are fake but she's called "the old cat" and "knows the Uchiha from ages past" which could be centuries or just decades. And why does a cat ear ornament signify who the chief is? What a strange bunch.

Anyway, a bunch of stuff I posted in the Rereading the Manga thread taken from the First Fanbook.

Shinobi Villages

- Konoha: The persecution of those with unusual or unorthodox abilties that often occurs in other villages is rarely seen here. This open-minded atmosphere helps the village prosper.Konoha was founded 60 years ago. Its current government is very democratic, and always listened to the voice of the people.

- Kiri: Last year a group of shinobi staged a revolt, but it ended in revolt.

- Suna: The size of their force greatly reduced, they are now concentrate on raising a smaller number of extremely skilled shinobi.

- Kumo: Currently quite friendly with Konoha.

- Kusa: Using their diplomatic techniques, they watch the movements of larger country to stay one step ahead of events. They also love to analyze the jutsu of other countries.

- Ame: This village pushes their shinobi to the limits of their abilities, creating many unique jutsu. Their assassination jutsu are in great demand by other countries.

Relationship between Daimyo and Shinobi Villages

The daimyo in charge of a country protects the villages in their domain from enemy attacks and provides money and other supplies as well. While operating an independent government, the leader of a village also provides military support to the country he resides in. The country needs the villages, since their power can tip the balance in diplomatics relationships, and the villages rely on the country to provide a stable place of residence. The relationship remains equal.

Konoha's Promotion System

Hokage: Selection by the Hokage or a group of high-ranking ninja.
Jounin: Selection/Appointment
Tokubetsu Jounin: Selection/Appointment
Chuunin: Chuunin Selection Exams or Selection/Appointment
Genin: Final Exam -> Genin Certification Exam

Mission Classification System

S-rank - Mission relates to national secrets - Examples are requests from other countries to join war, VIP assassination, transport of secret documents etc - More than one million ryo.

A-rank - Mission relates to village and country interests - Examples are requests from other countries to join, VIP guard duty, subdue ninja squad etc - 150'000 to 1'000'000 ryo.

B-rank - Mission expected to involve battle with other ninja - Examples are requests from other countries to join war, bodyguard for private individual, spywork, assassination of ninja etc - 80'000 to 200'000 ryo

C-rank - Mission expected to injure ninja involved - Examples are requests from other countries to join war, guard private individual, behaviour investigation, capture/kill wild animals etc - 30'000 to 100'000 ryo.

D-rank - Mission involves no direct battle or risk of death - Examples are requests from other other countries to join war, search for missing pets, help harvest potatoes, babysitting etc - 5'000 to 50'000 ryo.

Academy Curriculum

Basics: Immediately after entrance, students are given basic training and education. Without sturdy bodies and this fundamental knowledge, they will never be shinobi.

Maneuvers: Practical classes quickly have the students using ninja tools, ninjutsu and physical attacks. Many classes practice team play and simulated battle.

Application: When students are deemed to have mastered the basics and maneuvers they are moved to the application stage, where they are taught techniques designed for their personality and skills. Private lessons or special seminars help enhance their specials qualities. Then they graduate.

Teacher’s Comments

Naruto: Stands out for both his poor grades and his poor behaviour. Has guts and motivation but never studies.

Sasuke: Has an incredible sense for ninjutsu, taijutsu and genjutsu, and has maintained top grades. Frequently strikes out on his own during cooperative exercises - needs to work on teamwork and cooperation.

Shikamaru: Absolutely not motivated. Sleeps all the time - it's amazing he hasn't flunked out.

Chouji: No-one rivals his knowledge and interest in food. I once yelled at him for eating too early and he went berserk.

Kiba: Very violent. Takes good care of his dog, but needs to pay more attention to those around him.

Shino: Extremely mature for an Academy Student. I'd like to see him play occasionally to develop his emotions.

Hinata: Very retiring and pessimistic. I can't tell her to follow the problem student's lead, but she needs to put herself forward.

Sakura: Worth watching, both for her range of knowledge and control of chakra, but she doesn't seem to enjoy taijutsu. Occasionally prone to emotional outbursts, but if she channels that energy she should be able to improve on all her skills.

Ino: Outstanding grades, and gets other to follow her lead. Occasionally lets that got to her head.

Misc. Info

- The Jounin have the own station where they wait for emergencies or the Hokage's orders.

- Naruto has a training room in his apartment; it's windowless and designed for total concentration. Covered in scrolls and books.

- It's actually noted in the book that shuriken and kunai aren't deadly weapons. Kunai are easy to carry and flexible, shurikens are used for direct attacks and to pick off enemies.

- Naruto's outfit is described as comfortable to wear, good for movement and agility.

- There's a picture of Naruto gardening with a shitload of plants which never made it into the main manga.

- Whilst Sarutobi was trained by the Shodai and Nidaime, his team was led by the Nidaime.
And something more recent that I transcribed from the Third Databook.

Change in Chakra Nature

The five chakra natures are the foundation of ninjutsu. Change in chakra nature is at the foundation of ninjutsu and is essential in the development of new jutsu. The particulars are recorded here.

In the course of using ninjutsu, when one adds Fire and Wind elements to chakra to increase effectiveness, that is known as change in chakra nature. While it depends on the person, most individuals can tap into one chakra nature easily. At the jounin level, most can use two or more.

Fire: Chakra as hot as fire, with the power to burn anything it touches. It can turn its target into flames and, like Wind, is especially suited to offensive attacks.

Wind: Chakra as sharp as a blade which can cut and tear anything in its path. It is used for speciality ninja weapons and jutsu and is most effective in short to mid-range distances.

Lightning: It diffuses easily and is compatible with mid-to-long distance jutsu. Adding it to metal weapons makes them more lethal and increases the electrical shock.

Earth: It increases the solidity and composition of all things. A master can make steel unbreakable and clay more pliable. It can be applied to jutsu and other things.

Water: It is compatible with the multiple-faceted change in chakra form. As in creating fog to camouflage oneself, or a tsunami wave to obstruct something, it is effective for defensive purposes.

It is important to know your nature type before starting to train. Generally, chakra is sent through a chakra kanoshi and the changes are observed. For example, Wind will cut through the paper. Lightning will make creases in it.

In order to master change in chakra nature, one must undergo special training in each elemental nature. For Wind change in chakra nature, there are three levels. One: to strengthen the nature. Two: to increase the amount of change. Three: to merge it with a jutsu. Mastery of all natures can take years of training.

First level: Sustain Wind chakra until a leaf is cut in two.

Second Level: Cutting through a waterfall is special training to magnify the ability to release large amounts of chakra in an instant.

Third Level: The most difficult level is the third one of incorporating the elemental nature into a jutsu.

Even jounin-class ninja find it difficult to use two change in chakra natures simultaneously. In essence, it means combining change in nature to create something new. This is called Kekkei Genkai and it requires special strength.

Haku was one of those rare shinobi who possessed the Ice Style Kekkei Genkai. He was able to manipulate wind and water changes in chakra nature simultaneously to create ice. And he could perform such a special jutsu because he was of a kekkei genkai-bearing clan

Change in Chakra Form

Like change in chakra nature, this is another method of increasing the power of ninjutsu. Depending on the user’s skill and how he manifests it, ninjutsu can change shapes.

Change in chakra form transforms chakra in ninjutsu and allows one to control its power and range of effectiveness. It individualises one’s jutsu even more than change in chakra nature. However, much of its use depends on the jutsu, the method of training, and the individual’s own innovation and conception of the jutsu. It can be said that Rasengan is the acme of change in chakra form.

* The section on the Mangekyou Sharingan explains that the Eternal Mangenkyou can be obtained by taking the "eye of a blood relative. And the closer the blood ties, the better the compatibility." So it doesn't have to be a sibling's eyes, and the mention of "compatibility" seems to imply that there is a chance of failure or rejection, or the resulting EMS can vary in power, depending on how closely related you were to the original owner of the eye. Interestingly, the databook does not explicitly say that the relative's eye needs to have awakened the Mangekyou itself, or even the basic Sharingan.

* The Shinobi Progress Chart pages explains that "Literary master that he is, Jiraiya trained Naruto in something else besides a new jutsu" and it points out that Naruto's taijutsu and intelligence both increased 1.5 points over the two and a half year timeskip. This is a fair point, without that improved taijutsu and wisdom Naruto probably would not have been able to get close enough to Kakuzu to hit him with a rasenshuriken, and post-time skip Naruto probably could have defeated Kimmimaro with his hordes of clones instead of leaving him to Lee and Gaara. Kishimoto just never really did a good job of showing us how much Naruto's basics had improved, and improved basics isn't as flashy as new jutsu anyway. I don't get why he couldn't have taught Naruto a few new jutsu though. The kid learned shadow clone in a few hours, it's not like a couple of new non-elemental jutsu would have detracted significantly from his regular training. And of course there's still Jiraiya's unacceptable refusal to utilize the shadow clone memory trick.

* Jiraiya's toad transformation jutsu is described thusly: "The caster places his hand on the target's forehead, and using an image in his mind, instantly turns the target into a toad." Does that "image in his mind" line mean it's not limited to toads? Could you transform the victim into anything you can imagine? Since the jutsu is only C-rank I'm assuming the transformation is only temporary. So it sounds like this is basically just "henge used on someone else" but Jiraiya uses it only for toads and calls it by a different name. I wonder how long the transformation lasts, and whether it's possible for another person to dispel it and free an unwillingly transformed person.

* Endless Summoning Jutsu: "A summoning jutsu to which special conditions have been added. The summoned entity is given a certain condition, such as multiplying when attacked. When that condition is met, a jutsu that causes the entity to multiply is invoked."

First of all, this ridiculously powerful summoning jutsu variant that makes the summon literally invincible is only B-rank? Second of all, you can modify your summons with special conditions?! Why is Nagato the only person who ever does this? Why doesn't he do it with all of his summons? Does the summoned creature need to be compatible with the condition in order for the jutsu to work, and "endlessly multiplying" compatible creatures are very rare? Can you only use a particular condition for one summon at a time? The description implies that there are many different conditions you can apply to a summoned entity, with "endlessly multiplying when attacked" presumably being one of the most extreme. I wonder what other kinds of conditions can be applied to summons? Do the conditions only apply to summon animals - if Fukasaku knew this jutsu could he reverse-summon an endlessly multiplying Naruto?

Edit: Say, do you think that maybe Tsunade uses a "condition" like this when she summons Katsuya?

* Some definitions from the dictionary.

Spirit Weapon: Weapons that have no physical form like the Totsuka Blade and the Yata Mirror are referred to as this. Few have ever actually seen them and people question whether they actually exist.

Will of Fire: The ideals that Konoha shinobi adhere to. Treat one's great predecessors as gods and fight with pride in their memory. And tell their beliefs to future generations. (So the Will of Fire is ancestor worship? Not quite the idea I'd gotten from the manga with all the talk about love, peace and sacrificing and fighting for the sake of the village.)

*Hidan's concept art page includes a quote from Kishimoto. "His scythe can actually do all sorts of tricks, but I never got to show all of them." I wonder what kinds of tricks that scythe has?

* According to the Q & A with Kishimoto, if you drank Suigetsu he would give you the runs. Also when asked which female character he would like as a girlfriend, Kishimoto replies: "None. Afterall, I created them." But when asked which male character he would like as a boyfriend if he were a girl, he says: "Shikamaru because he's intelligent and I think he'd succeed in life." Huh? Didn't Kishimoto create Shikamaru too?

"Let me explain something to you, there is only one thing that matters if you are a shinobi, and it isn't the number of techniques you possess. All you do need, is the guts to never give up." - It would seem that Jiraiya follows this belief to the letter.

Perhaps those different kinds of toads that Jiraiya could summon used this, such as the Scroll Toad, Shop Toad, Gourd Toad and Diving Toad. He could also summon the stomach of one of the toads and Kakashi could summon his dogs through the ground.

Dude knows a metric shit-ton of jutsu himself though, including many of the weirdest and most unique ones in the manga. Saying that the number of techniques you know doesn't matter seems a tad hypocritical coming from someone who knows as many as he does, and saying that you should have the guts to never give up rings a little hollow considering that he totally did give up on mastering Sage Mode and redeeming Orochimaru.

The Scroll Toad, Gourd Toad and Diving Toad are all described as being unique species native to Mount Myoboku who evolved their weird properties. But the description of the Shop Toad technique states that while the toad can transform into an architectural structure, the summoner has to use their chakra to mold the building to the designs and specs of their choosing. So the Shop Toad's transformation could very well be a "condition" placed on the toad by the summoning jutsu. Kakashi summoning his dogs into the ground also sounds like a good candidate for another condition.

I'm also wondering now whether Katsuya's division might be a result of a summoning condition performed by Tsunade.

I like to think of it as he had other things to do, like (fanon?) managering the entire spy ring of the village and keeping eyes around while war was brewing on the horizon.

But if he had nothing to do, he would totally have mastered SM and brainwashed Orochimaru into broship again :snigger:

It'd be ironic if he shied away from mastering Sage Mode since he thought it'd make him even uglier. But he never mentions it to the sage toads and thus never discovers the truth.

All true and I don't really get it myself. And I hadn't thought about him giving up on Orochimaru so I guess that's another way in which Naruto surpasses him; he actually follows through on his belief. Though I guess that gives more meaning to Jiraiya's death when, thinking of Naruto, he told himself that master and student share their nindo and his refusal to give up there saved everyone's ass.

For the training, I think datakim's view is most accurate in that the trip was meant to train Naruto as a jinchuuriki rather than as a shinobi. Naturally he improved all his basic skills but the majority of their training was focused on Naruto accessing and controlling the Kyuubi's chakra. But since Jiraiya, and Konoha, had no real experience in that area the whole thing was gamble and one that didn't work out in the end.

And given the diverse number of jutsu that he has, I wouldn't be surprised if he made most of them himself and so he was expecting Naruto to start making up his own. Which should technically be possible when you've learned the pinnacle of shape manipulation.

Edit: And there's always "that jutsu" that we still don't have confirmation on.

That'd be pretty clever on Tsunade's part as it would tie into her coming up with the idea of long-range healing. Assuming it was her idea since I wouldn't be surprised if Hashirama did it with his trees or something.

You know... what if that gamble ultimately did work out, but they didn't know it at the time? Naruto mastered Kurama's chakra amazingly quickly. From breaking the seal in Kumogakure's secret temple to attaining bijuu mode, that was what, a few days? A week? He was slinging around bijuu chakra arms like a pro with a few hours of practice, and he was quickly so skilled with Kurama's chakra he could even convert it to match hundreds of other shinobi's chakra signatures and give it to them. Seems a tad improbably doesn't it?

What if that seemingly overnight mastery of Kurama's chakra was actually a result of two and a half years of jinchuuriki training with Jiraiya? Jiraiya only considered the training a failure because they were never able to master the final step of separating Kurama's will from his chakra. Without that crucial final step it didn't matter how much of an expert Naruto had become at controlling and shaping Kurama's chakra, because every attempt to do so with more than a small fraction of it resulted in Naruto losing control of his body to Kurama. However with Bee's training at the temple (and Kushina's help) Naruto finally overcame that final obstacle and was able to utilize all the skill he'd acquired under Jiraiya's tutelage to master Kyuubi Chakra mode in record time.

I've also long theorized that Jiraiya had been preparing Naruto for Sage Mode training by teaching him esoteric meditation and chakra control exercises but never told him what the real purpose of them was. It would help explain his absurdly fast mastery of Senjutsu.

Is it possible that Jiraiya might have been referring to the seal jutsu recorded on the scroll toad that unlocked Kurama's seal? Naruto wouldn't have been able to handle that confrontation at the time Jiraiya warned him about it. I really can't imagine what else Jiraiya might have been referring to that Naruto still wouldn't be willing to use against even the freaking Juubi.

Does B give the impression that he was learning to manipulate Kurama's chakra at an unnatural speed? From what I understood, the reason jinchuuriki have always struggled to control their bijuu's power to the point that only Yagura and B were said to have actually mastered it was because of the bijuu's opposing will. I think those two were the only ones who were able to rob their bijuu of their chakra (and then befriend them in B's case).* Without that it takes lots of training to handle those powers like with Yugito and Roushi. Basically, defeating the bijuu is the hardest aspect of the training and actually controlling the separated chakra isn't to difficult.

Even Kurama noted that Naruto's an individual with a unique affinity for his chakra thanks to being a jinchuuriki from birth and Kushina's child, so he progress doesn't strike me as unreasonable. I think Naruto would have learned to handle the KCM in decent time even if he hadn't used the Kyuubi's chakra before, but I'd agree that Jiraiya's training was likely a big help. Especially given the situation when he achieved it. Though if B had used the Hachibi's chakra a fair bit before dominating him then it might be that he saw nothing amiss with Naruto's progress because the situation had been the same for him. In which case the training would have definitely been a big help.

*I wonder if Yagura managed it too. If he hadn't, it could explain why he remained trapped under Obito's control since his bijuu wouldn't be interested in breaking him free. And to an outside observer, he would still be considered a master of his bijuu because of how he'd be able to use its chakra.

Is it possible that Jiraiya might have been referring to the seal jutsu recorded on the scroll toad that unlocked Kurama's seal? Naruto wouldn't have been able to handle that confrontation at the time Jiraiya warned him about it. No, they're two separate things. Gerotora tells that the key is needed to complete "that" jutsu rather than it being that jutsu, and the phrasing generally doesn't fit since the key is a jutsu in itself. And IIRC, Jiraiya tells Naruto not to use "that" jutsu during the Rescue Kazekage mission which wouldn't make sense when Jiraiya had the key.

Though I like the idea of all of Akatsuki being awestruck by Tenten's skills, being dumbfounded isn't always a positive thing. It's more likely IMO that during their down-time when all the Akatsuki members are hanging out, one of their conversation topics is how that crazy Tenten chick thinks she can face S-class Ninja while only using tools. "Ha ha ha, what's she going to do next, try using the Bunshin no Jutsu?"

Gai probably uses blunt trauma weapons because they're sturdier. I mean, with 6 gates unlocked, his punches clock at about Mach 5. Also, they shouldn't have either threatened or mocked one of his precious students, because if he had found out, well, see here.

Konoha: The persecution of those with unusual or unorthodox abilities that often occurs in other villages is rarely seen here. This open-minded atmosphere helps the village prosper. Konoha was founded 60 years ago. Its current government is very democratic, and always listened to the voice of the people.
Is this referring to how a candidate needs to be approved by the Jōnin of the village to become officially Hokage, or does the horrible "civilian council" fanon actually have databook support?

According to the 1st fanbook, 1 Ryo is about 10 yen. Knight504, if you have a copy of the Hyo no Sho would you mind confirming that?

According to research carried out by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, on the 1st of October 2002, the Yen-Dollar exchange rate was 118.9927 Yen to the $. 120 Yen would have been just over a buck back then.

But wait, my amateur economic nerditry isn't over yet! Thanks to CoinNews.net's Inflation Calculator, I can tell you that an item bought for a Dollar in 2002 would cost $.129 in 2013.

Therefore, if a Ryo is about 10 Yen, then thanks to my spiffy Excel spreadsheet, I can tell you that a Ninja's hiring fees in April 2013 U.S.D would have been approximately.

D-rank: $544.09 - $5,440.92.

C-rank: $3,264.54 - $10,881.83.

B-rank: $8,705.46 - $21,763.65.

A-rank: $16,322.75 - $108,818.30.

And Asuma's bounty would have been $3,808,640.27. Approximately. Yeesh. No wonder Kakazu was so interested.

Application: When students are deemed to have mastered the basics and maneuvers they are moved to the application stage, where they are taught techniques designed for their personality and skills. Private lessons or special seminars help enhance their specials qualities. Then they graduate.
Uh... since when? Naruto probably couldn't have been said to have mastered the basics, but Sakura probably could have.

Yuuhi Kurenai

Personality: Nothing hidden. Works hard but always positive.
Love: Values bonds between hearts and would have a very healthy relationship.
Work: Acts before she thinks. Very strong when she has momentum.
Takes betrayal badly. Listen to the voice of experience.
That's interesting, considering her speciality. Plus Asuma and her apparently tried to keep their relationship on the D.L. I would think one would need at least some talent for misdirection and deception to excel at Genjutsu. Perhaps she's so sick of lying as a ninja, she decides to be totally honest as a person?

I don't get why he couldn't have taught Naruto a few new jutsu though. The kid learned shadow clone in a few hours, it's not like a couple of new non-elemental jutsu would have detracted significantly from his regular training. And of course there's still Jiraiya's unacceptable refusal to utilize the shadow clone memory trick.
"Let me explain something to you, there is only one thing that matters if you are a shinobi, and it isn't the number of techniques you possess. All you do need, is the guts to never give up." - It would seem that Jiraiya follows this belief to the letter.
Naruto has both outrageous stamina, and a healing factor that probably causes his body to recover quicker. When Kakashi had chakra exhaustion, it kept him out of action for about a week. It would probably keep Naruto down for a couple of hours, or a day at most. In chapter 315, Kakashi flat-out states that only Naruto can do that sort of mass clone training. Even if Jiraiya technically has the stamina to use even 1 clone for training, his more normal recovery rate may mean that he'd be too tired to train at all the next day, or for nowhere near as long, making his training less efficient overall.

Also keep in mind that the two previous Konoha Jinchuuriki, Mito and Kushina, apparently didn't have any access to Kurama's power, although Mito could sense negative emotions. Kushina survived Kurama's extraction, but that was attributed to her Uzumaki vitality. Uzumaki live a long time, are as tough as nails, and probably have much higher stamina than the norm, but they don't recover like Naruto does. Faster than normal, but not to Naruto's level. This means that no Konoha shinobi has ever had a student like Naruto, so it makes sense that only a genius ninja like Kakashi would think of the training method while convalescing with nothing to do. I mean, he was recovering from chakra exhaustion (which can kill you.) "Gosh, I'm bored. I wish I had Naruto's stamina. Then I wouldn't be here in the first place. Or his recovery rate. Then I'd already be out of here. And the way he uses Shadow Clones! Man, if I could abuse that jutsu the way he can, I'd, I'd.. wait a minute. Awesome training idea for Naruto!"

As for Jiraiya's techniques, well, keep in mind that the majority of the jutsu Jiraiya knew were either too difficult for Naruto to learn in 2 1/2 years (as far as Jiraiya knew,) or simply wouldn't have been much use to him. Here's a list of each jutsu that Jiraiya showed, and comments on how helpful they would have been for Naruto. Minus the Rasengan and Jiraiya's variants, obviously.
Barrier: Canopy Method Formation: B-rank jutsu. A detection barrier technique. A useful technique, but one that Naruto could wait to learn until after the organisation of S-class Missing Ninja that are out to kill him have been dealt with.

Barrier: Toad Gourd Prison: B-rank jutsu. Naruto being able to imprison people isn't a huge priority, but then again, seeing as Akatsuki members travel in pairs, if the outside of the Gourd Toad is durable enough or could be protected, using this jutsu to isolate one of the two could have been quite helpful for Naruto. That said, Naruto has allies, while Jiraiya works alone, so it's less useful for him.

Earth Release: Swamp of the Underworld: An A-rank earth jutsu, in order for Naruto to learn it, he would have to had mastered Earth Transformation. Jiraiya probably didn't know Naruto's affinity, but even if it had been Earth, it would have taken Naruto years to master it, unless using the clone training method, which Jiraiya, not being a genius, wouldn't have thought of.

Fire Release: Big Flame Bullet: B-rank fire jutsu. Sage technique, see explanation for Senjutsu. Fire jutsu, see explanation for Swamp of the Underworld, substituting earth for fire.

Fire Release: Dragon Fire Technique: C-rank fire jutsu. Used by Jiraiya in "The New Erotic Ninjutsu Completed!!!," Jiraiya may not have been able to use this jutsu in canon. Uses cord or wire, which isn't something Naruto uses a lot of. As it is only a C-rank jutsu, Naruto could probably use this jutsu just by learning the hand seals, including the tiger seal, just as the Shinobi Alliance did with the Earth Release, Earthen Wall in recent chapters, but it's too weak to be of any use, and there's little point using it against either Sasuke or Itachi, who both know much better fire jutsu. They'd be able to counter-balance it in their sleep.

Fire Release: Flame Bullet: C-rank jutsu and Toad Oil Bullet: C-rank jutsu. The Flame Bullet is possibly a low enough level that Naruto wouldn't have to bother with learning nature transformation for fire. Again, he's going to be facing the Uchiha brothers, not to mention Kisame, and, to me, Jiraiya teaching these jutsu to Naruto just doesn't seem to be an efficient use of the limited time they have.

Fire Release: Toad Oil Flame Bullet: Naruto probably can use this technique even in the manga, as he can summon Gamabunta and has exploding tags. It's just not a good technique to use against one or two human size, fast-moving targets. He might have used it against Sasori's Red Secret Technique: Performance of a Hundred Puppets technique had he not followed Deidara.

Five Elements Unseal: If somebody had repeated Orochimaru's trick of layering a odd-numbered seal over Naruto's even-numbered seal, Naruto may have displayed the ability to use this technique in part 2. Considering that Jiraiya must have known that Naruto would likely face Orochimaru again, teaching Naruto this, or another method of countering attempts to interfere with the Eight Trigrams Seal, would definitely be on my schedule if I were Jiraiya.

Hiding in a Toad Technique: C-rank jutsu. An infiltration technique that's utterly pointless for what Jiraiya was training Naruto for. Unless Naruto was planning on hiding away from Akatsuki.

Needle Jizo: B-rank jutsu. ...This would have actually been an incredibly useful jutsu for Naruto to know. It could probably stop Naruto's clones from dispersing. That said, it's possible that it's an animation jutsu that probably relies on Yang-predominant chakra. If learning Yin-Yang release takes anywhere near as long as it would to learn nature transformation, then, again, there might not have been enough time for Naruto to learn the technique without neglecting his other abilities.

Senjutsu: ...I have no idea why Naruto didn't spend half of his training trip at Mount Myoboku. The only possible explanation I can think of is that Naruto only had a stamina stat of 4 at the end of part 1, but a 5 in the 3rd databook. Perhaps Naruto's stamina was very high, but not quite good enough for Senjutsu at the time. Then again, Jiraiya had no way of knowing that Naruto would take to it like a duck to water.

Summoning: Food Cart Destroyer: B-rank jutsu. Easy enough for Naruto to perform, but trying to hit an S-rank Ninja and not a summon with this sounds like an exercise in futility. I mean, Shunshin. Maybe Hidan, I suppose.

Summoning: Toad Mouth Bind: A-rank jutsu. I have no idea how difficult partial-summoning techniques are, and Itachi and Kisame have already seen and beaten this technique.

Summoning: Toad Shop Technique: B-rank. See explanation for Hiding in a Toad Technique.

Toad Flatness — Shadow Manipulation Technique: B-rank jutsu. ...How does this even work? What does it have to do with Toads? And, again, Naruto needed to learn how to kick ass, not infiltration techniques.

Transparent Escape Technique: Never shown in the manga. Probably not as broken as it sounds, or Jiriaya might have used it in a fight. Not really Naruto's style either.

Turning into a Frog Technique: C-rank jutsu. Naruto didn't need to be learning interrogation techniques. And why isn't it the "Turning into a Toad Technique?"

Wild Lion's Mane Technique: B-rank jutsu. Might have been a useful attack for Naruto to know, especially when combined with Shadow Clones. See Needle Jizo's description for a possible explanation for why Naruto might not have learnt it.

As you can see, the majority of the techniques Jiraiya was shown to know would have either been very time-consuming for Naruto to learn, or not something that Naruto should have been focusing on learning.

Anyway, over the course of the training trip, Jiraiya increased Naruto's stamina (from a 4 in the 2nd Databook to a 5 in the 3rd,) strength and speed (from 3 to 3.5,) improved his taijutsu to the point where he could fight Kakashi, Yamato, and Itachi in hand-to-hand combat without being overwhelmed, taught him how to dispel genjutsu, taught him at least some fuinjutsu, seeing as Naruto had no problem unlocking the eight trigrams seal, or resealing Kurama, probably helped Naruto with the Odama Rasengan, and worked on Naruto with regards to his tactics, as shown when Naruto used clones to gather info when fighting Kakazu, and his outstanding tactics while fighting Pain.

Furthermore, wasn't Jiraiya was basically aiming for Naruto to have KCM at the start of part 2? Even if Kurama was munching on Naruto's chakra, that still would have been enough for Naruto to probably be able to fight every member of Akatsuki bar Pain and Tobito at the same time and win.

*Endless Summoning Jutsu.
The Blocking Technique Absorption Seal used by the Preta Path apparently works by absorbing chakra and then " dispersing it within one's body by spinning the chakra within one's body in the opposite direction." That sounds like a technique that anyone, especially someone who knows the Rasengan, should be able to learn, but it's exclusive to the Preta Path. Perhaps the Endless Summoning Jutsu is simply unique to the Animal Path.

You know... what if that gamble ultimately did work out, but they didn't know it at the time? Naruto mastered Kurama's chakra amazingly quickly. From breaking the seal in Kumogakure's secret temple to attaining bijuu mode, that was what, a few days? A week? He was slinging around bijuu chakra arms like a pro with a few hours of practice, and he was quickly so skilled with Kurama's chakra he could even convert it to match hundreds of other shinobi's chakra signatures and give it to them. Seems a tad improbably doesn't it?
Didn't Naruto have what were essentially bijuu chakra arms when he fought Sasuke at the VotE?

Somewhere in the middle I think. There might not be a civilian council but the civilians are probably allowed to voice their opinions on how the village is run (though not the military).

According to the 1st fanbook, 1 Ryo is about 10 yen. Knight504, if you have a copy of the Hyo no Sho would you mind confirming that?
I haven't got a clue where that's mentioned, sorry. Multiple mentions of ryo but I'm not seeing a comparison with yen and it doesn't come with an index.

Depends on what it means by basics. It probably includes things like shuriken throwing, trap making, tree hopping, fight stances etc. Naruto was only really struggling with that one jutsu and even his ignorance about chakra didn't stop him being able to use it. And by techniques, rather than jutsu I'd say it refers to them learning in a style that suits the individual like Sakura focusing on being efficient in her movements because she doesn't have much stamina and stuff like that.

The Blocking Technique Absorption Seal used by the Preta Path apparently works by absorbing chakra and then " dispersing it within one's body by spinning the chakra within one's body in the opposite direction." I don't know, reversing the flow of all the chakra in your body sounds pretty extreme and very few shinobi are able to absorb chakra. The Rasengan spins a portion of your chakra that's being externalized and even then, Naruto was taught in spin it in the same direction as his natural rotation.

Didn't Naruto have what were essentially bijuu chakra arms when he fought Sasuke at the VotE?
Bijuu cloaks seem to do that in general.

I dunno, I would expect that this would have been mentioned. Also I seem to recall Bee did actually train Naruto in using chakra arms. Add to this the fact that Narutos bijuu form is totally unlike that of any other jinchuuriki, and the idea that some hidden training from Jiraiya helped becomes even more unlikely. Its a nice idea to try and make it seem like Jiraiya actually accomplished something, but I just don't buy it. :)

Heres a question though. Why did Minato seal Kushina inside Naruto, so that she would be there to help Naruto when he tried to master Kuramas chakra? Given that she only appeared when Naruto did the chakra-tug-of-war thing and fully opened the seal, does that not imply that Minato actually had some idea on what would be required to acquire Kuramas power? So why did Jiraiya have no idea?

Actually, the seal-toad also seemed to know that you had to separate the will of the fox from the chakra of the fox, which is a simplified description of the chakra-tug. Why the heck was Jiraiya so unaware of all of this?

Wonder if there are any fanfics where Naruto actually does reach KCM and/or master SM during the timeskip. Would have to be one-shots to be any good (for obvious reasons), but it would certainly make that first meeting with Sasuke more amusing. :)

I've also long theorized that Jiraiya had been preparing Naruto for Sage Mode training by teaching him esoteric meditation and chakra control exercises but never told him what the real purpose of them was. It would help explain his absurdly fast mastery of Senjutsu.
Again I think it would have been mentioned by Naruto, if the meditations and such were things that he had already practised with Jiraiya. Not to mention that not telling Naruto such meditations were preparations for "some cool technique" would not have been productive given Narutos personality pre/early-timeskip.

I think it more likely that Naruto mastered it due to being Uzumaki. Kabuto mentioned that those who are descended from the younger brother/sage (Uzumaki&Senju) have the potential to learn the technique effectively. Thats why Kabuto nicked Uzumaki Karins DNA I believe. Because that helped him master SM.

Jiraiya did accomplish something; it just wasn’t the desired result of total control over the Kyuubi’s chakra. From Jiraiya’s discussion with Tsunade, Kakashi and Yamato, we learn that Naruto was able to draw out three tails worth of power and the databook does says he has some control of the Kyuubi’s power. But the chakra shroud was harmful and beyond three tails Naruto loses control, not to mention that he admitted to letting the Kyuubi take over when he fought Orochimaru and Pein.

It doesn’t take a stretch of the imagination for Minato to think that Kushina, who was made a jinchuuriki because she had special chakra suited for the task, would be useful regardless of how things would go down. That’s a safe bet to make with a bonus of letting Naruto talk with his mother. Plus Minato’s a genius and appears to be far more knowledgeable than Jiraiya when it comes to Bijuu and Jinchuuriki. Jiraiya was guessing what he needed to do based on him knowing Minato, the seal’s design and having the key left in his care. Simply put, he had to cook a meal with only a few of the ingredients and no recipe to follow.

Gerotora’s knowledge could have all come from Jiraiya and the two+ years he spent training with Naruto. And knowing what needs to be done isn’t the same as knowing how, especially with something like removing any hatred inside you. He might have felt that the "tug-of-war" would have been Naruto wrestling with the Kyuubi's will whilst drawing out of his power each time rather than the method that B learned. Even if Jiraiya eventually surmised that Naruto would need to open the seal all the way to take control (which is probably why he finally sent the scroll toad to seal himself in Naruto), there’s no way he would have been ready for it earlier and the consequences of failure would be terrible. And he was already worried about Naruto turning into the Kyuubi, hence why he tweaked the seal during training.

For Altered senjutsu theory, I believe there was a flashback panel showing Naruto meditating under a waterfall on a toad, so I wouldn’t consider it a stretch for things like that to have helped him even if it was just for the "stillness" aspect of the training. Kabuto used Karin’s DNA because it granted him impressive recovery power. In reference to senjutsu, he only talked about Juugo’s DNA and his clan. I wouldn’t be surprised Naruto's heritage was a factor but Kabuto doesn’t say anything to that effect.

Hmm. Well, the Naruto Wiki (boo hiss) claims that the infos in there, and several other sites corroborate it (although they probably just took the info from the wiki.) I shall assume it's probably true until receiving an answer either way.

So what the hell is up with D-ranks? Who the hell pays a ninja over $500 to weed their garden? I mean, having super-human ninjas help a farmer harvest an entire field in one day for a grand or so sounds like a good deal, but babysitting? It sounds like a lot of the clients for a lot of D-ranks are the more money than sense types who hire them for bragging rites. "Oh Ho Ho, I'm so rich, I hire shinobi just to make my breakfast."

Also, how do you think that money is split up? If a genin team completes a long-term D-rank for a VIP client, who pays 50,000 Ryo for it, what's the village's take? Do Jounin get a higher percentage? How much of a 50,000 Ryo payment would a Genin end up taking home?

Hmm, when you describe it like that, it sounds a lot more difficult, though I would assume that a Hyuga who knew how to do the Rasengan could figure out how to reverse the direction of the spin of his or her chakra with a bit of hard work. And the Rasengan has rotations in both directions, so Naruto did have to learn to spin his chakra in the direction opposite to his natural rotation, albeit after it was externalised.

Didn't Naruto have what were essentially bijuu chakra arms when he fought Sasuke at the VotE?
Bijuu cloaks seem to do that in general.

My point is that Naruto's been using arms like that for years, and probably did do so during the time-skip while Jiraiya supervised. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Naruto's Taijutsu is at least partially designed to work with the arms. Naruto does seem to show a preference to punches over kicks, after all.

I realize that Jiraiya initializing Naruto's training in controlling the Kyuubi and mastering Senjutsu is a bit of stretch but I'm just trying to come up with a canon compliant way for him to have significantly contributed to Naruto's growth and to help make his ridiculous mastery of Senjutsu and very quick master of Kyuubi chakra mode seem a little more plausible. I wouldn't say it's canon by any stretch but it's definitely something I'd put in a fanfic. I really don't like the idea that he mostly just ignored Naruto while writing his trashy porn novels like in that one Omake chapter.

Knight does have a point though, Jiraiya's training got Naruto up from the one-tail of Kurama's chakra he used at the valley of the end to being able to use 3-tails semi-reliably. It's not much of an improvement but it had to have helped once he finally attained Kyuubi Chakra Mode.

I wonder how the jinchuuriki of bijuu with less tails train to control their bijuu's chakra. Incrementally increasing the number of tails as your skill improves enough to handle them wouldn't be nearly as effective of a training method for Gaara or Yugito.

This prompted me to actually read through my copy of the third databook rather than just pick out the highlights. Naturally, I must now take over the thread post my findings:

- "Since Chouji ingested those food pills, he has been plagued by a curse known as Rebound"...I have no idea what that's meant to mean. And apparently, hardening his hair to use with the Human Boulder jutsu was actually his personal twist rather than a standard thing.

- The Aburame feel uncomfortable speaking to humans and they communicate with their beetles through silence.

- Turns out the online translators made a mistake with Kiba's bio. I've been under the belief that he had a jutsu under wraps called Hurricane Wolf Fangs when it was just hyperbole. I am disappoint.

- Kushina's called a "former kunoichi from the Land of Eddies" which makes it sounds like she was already a ninja.

- It seems that Sasuke really hated Orochimaru as he "despises his maliciousness and waits for the opportunity to revolt". Sounds like he was planning to screw him over the whole time and I'm wondering what kind of things he's seen by Orochimaru's side. Also, the revelation that the Uchiha possess the Sage's spiritual energy and chakra fits with how Orochimaru got screwed over when he tried to transplant his soul.

- A mention of how the Curse Seal empowers Sasuke with a strength that average shinobi can't attain reminds me of how he got a big boost after achieved CS2, even when he wasn't actively using the seal. A result of senjutsu?

- It mentions that the Sharingan's power is what reminds Kurama of Madara. I wonder if the sinister chakra he referred to was actually within Sasuke's eyes...

- It wasn't until after the shuriken and sword clash that Sasuke and Itachi trapped each other in a genjutsu. I thought it was Itachi and that it had been like that the whole time. I think I'll need to re-read that fight.

- The Great Toad Sage's is able to see the future in visions because of his enormous amounts of chakra. And I'm reminded that one of his visions (which are 100% accurate) was that Naruto would fight a young man with powerful eyes. So Naruto vs Sasuke should still be on the horizon.

- Orochimaru wasn't interested in a Uchiha body as his dream vessel until Itachi kicked his ass. Interesting. I thought he'd already decided and tried it with Itachi.

- From Kakuzu's bio: "...sometimes traces of the once-honorable samurai surface." Say what now? And it turns out that all the scars and stitchmarks where a result of wounds rather than his body-modifying kinjutsu. "After he steals and heart and converts it into a mask, he mutilates himself in compensation."

- Has a brief segment on the Kazekages where the Fourth's only claim to fame is being murdered by Orochimaru. Ha.

- Sasori's human flesh is referred to as a nucleus. Human flesh is essential in creating chakra.

- Sai and Shin were war orphans, unsurprisingly.

- Jiraiya's been working in intelligence for years. He turned down the position of Hokage because of Orochimaru's madness and supported the village from the shadows.

- Danzo surfaces after Naruto returns. What was he doing before?

- Chiyo was apparently a badass in medical ninjutsu, taijutsu and puppet jutsu.

- Deidara didn't come up with his explosive clay creations until after he escaped with the kinjutsu and his pursuers used explosive clay to stop him. His first opponent after learning it was Itachi and he sees all members of Akatsuki as fellow artists.

- Raido is renowned for his assassination jutsu and often pairs up with Aoba.

- Yugito became a jinchuuriki at age two. Despite being a target of disdain by training hard through sheer will Yugito gained mastery over her Tailed Beast.

- The ninja cats' home is known as the Sky District ruins.

- Hinata: "With a powerful Byakugan, that rivals that of Neji, there is no doubt that she has hidden potentially." That's the first time I've seen her compared to Neji favorably.

- Fukasaku's over eight hundred years old.

- Nagato's bio implies that he's been in charge of Ame for several years by PTS.

- Suigetsu was "born with his family's peculiar ability"? That sounds more like a kekkei genkai. He comes across a dangerous bastard in the databook but these days he's rather pathetic.

- Yamato is known far and wide as Mokuton Tenzo. Yet no-one had heard of him before PTS. ;)

- Roushi had the Yonbi from an early age and traveled extensively to try and control the excess energy. At the end of his wanderings and with the help of the Yonbi, he acquired Lava Release.

- There's a 23 years old genin who used to study under Asuma.

- The Uchiha are described as having “enormous chakra” which is slightly different.

- The insignia ring is proof that they are a part of Akatsuki.

- ROOT was officially disbanded after Hiruzen became Hokage. I’m really not sure how that works.

-Toads are pretty damn numerous and have various species. I wonder how it is for the slugs and snakes.

- Asuma’s ash jutsu works by creating “explosive powder from altered chakra”. Makes more sense that saying gunpowder.

-Konan’s paper shuriken is something that's used by a ninja who’s out of ninja tools.

-For the Kamui’s page, “the Mangekyou Sharingan can cause blindness if used continuously” which supports the idea that you can avoid it by not overdoing it. Silly Sasuke.

- These body-modifying kinjutsu are really weird. Deidara’s created multiple mouths, Hidan became immortal and Kakuzu’s can manipulate black tentacles that emerge from the body. Yet we also have things like Suigetsu’s liquefaction and Konan’s paper body which are classed differently. Because they're temporary (if Suigetsu's can be counted as such)?

- One of Deidara's jutsu has him create a shadow clone to ingest clay and then blow itself up, using the opportunity to replace himself and escape.

- Yamato’s waterfall jutsu creates water from nothing; I thought he used an underground river.

-Deidara’s earth escape jutsu turns the ground to sand. I’m thinking that sand is just an example of Earth Release but it difficult for most to control due to its nature, which is what makes the Shukaku special. It could be the same for the Gobi (or just Han) who can create steam; technically it’s an example of Water Release but it’s a very difficult form to achieve.

...That looks long. Shall I spoiler all this?

Perhaps it's an unpopular opinion to hold, and it's not one I held at the start of part 2, but if we excuse Jiraiya for not thinking of the 1000 Kage Bunshin training method (due to not being a genius and it probably being a method that no konoha shinobi would have ever been able to use before, possibly even with 1 clone,) then Naruto's growth over the time-skip isn't that appalling.

Better stamina, strength and speed, improved taijutsu, ability to dispel genjutsu, knowledge of fuinjutsu, much improved tactics (when he's not being overly emotional,) the Odama Rasengan and access to 3 tails. It's just that he was fighting S-Class Shinobi now instead of genin like Kiba, Neji or Sasuke. I mean, I think Kakashi could have beat Part 1 Curse Seal level 2 Sasuke, right?

- "Since Chouji ingested those food pills, he has been plagued by a curse known as Rebound"...I have no idea what that's meant to mean. And apparently, hardening his hair to use with the Human Boulder jutsu was actually his personal twist rather than a standard thing.
It's much easier for him to both gain and lose weight?

- A mention of how the Curse Seal empowers Sasuke with a strength that average shinobi can't attain reminds me of how he got a big boost after achieved CS2, even when he wasn't actively using the seal. A result of senjutsu?
Say what now? I thought that was just him getting the 3rd tomoe?

- The Great Toad Sage's is able to see the future in visions because of his enormous amounts of chakra. And I'm reminded that one of his visions (which are 100% accurate) was that Naruto would fight a young man with powerful eyes. So Naruto vs Sasuke should still be on the horizon.
So why aren't people like Naruto or Kisame getting visions?

- Danzo surfaces after Naruto returns. What was he doing before?
Kicking puppies.

- Deidara didn't come up with his explosive clay creations until after he escaped with the kinjutsu and his pursuers used explosive clay to stop him. His first opponent after learning it was Itachi and he sees all members of Akatsuki as fellow artists.
So while he was stealing a forbidden jutsu... his pursuers used a forbidden jutsu? Or were they using explosive clay without the hand-mouths?

- The ninja cats' home is known as the Sky District ruins.
As in the Sky Ninja who from the second Naruto Shippūden movie?

- Fukasaku's over eight hundred years old.
Seriously? You'd think Jiraiya would have known more about the time of the Sage of the Six Paths then.

- One of Deidara's jutsu has him create a shadow clone to ingest clay and then blow itself up, using the opportunity to replace himself and escape.
I'm betting that until Kabuto edo tensei-d him, a lot of people were expecting Deidara to make a wasn't-dead-all-along reappearance.

From Kakuzu's bio: "...sometimes traces of the once-honorable samurai surface.
Which ties in the whole "With the rise of the hidden villages, samurai families and schools turned into ninja families and schools" Hanzō revealed us.

I just wouldn't have expected it from the mercenary.

His improvement was alright, just poorly portrayed and not as good as people wanted. Rather than being shown how much Naruto progressed, were shown that he hadn't progressed enough e.g. he couldn't get the bells of Kakashi, couldn't break Itachi's genjutsu, can't use the Rasengan one-handed etc. Not helped by him being overshadowed by Sakura and Sasuke despite being the main character and not showing anything new other than an unnecessary variation of the Rasengan. Whilst not perfect, One Piece was better in showing the progress of all the main characters after a time skip.

Say what now? I thought that was just him getting the 3rd tomoe?
The way Sasuke was manhandling Naruto at the start of the fight (like picking him up and chucking him off the statue) made it look like receiving the second stage had boosted his base stats.

So why aren't people like Naruto or Kisame getting visions?
There's apparently that much difference in the amount of chakra he had.

So while he was stealing a forbidden jutsu... his pursuers used a forbidden jutsu? Or were they using explosive clay without the hand-mouths?
The latter, I think. And probably without the mobile animals forms.

As in the Sky Ninja who from the second Naruto Shippūden movie?
It doesn't elaborate. It's probably just a name.

Seriously? You'd think Jiraiya would have known more about the time of the Sage of the Six Paths then.
This could mean that the Sage was a myth even from eight hundred years ago. Interesting.

- Kushina's called a "former kunoichi from the Land of Eddies" which makes it sounds like she was already a ninja.
So was she already a Genin? Then why was she in the academy?

- Jiraiya's been working in intelligence for years. He turned down the position of Hokage because of Orochimaru's madness and supported the village from the shadows.
So the fanon idea of Jiraiya as spymaster was true?
