It's an X in the original. But how was I supposed to spell "Circle in a Circle", "Circle", and "Triangle" in shorthand?

Also: do you have a scan of the page?

I'll do one when possible. It's two pages, but irrelevant to this.

Also, there's no limit of entries when it comes to the Graduation Exam. We don't know how Naruto was allowed to attempt them, but it's possible that he was given permission to do it, even with his grades, because of hopes he'd quit sooner if he did that.

Of course, if Naruto *passed* those exams, even with shitty skills, he'd probably fail the Genin exam because, until he learned Kage Bunshin, he wasn't really good at anything but Henge.

except the Genin Exam isn't focused on SKILL. If you Graduate, you are "skilled enough" for a brand-new Genin to get trained by a Jōnin.
The Genin Exam is about Teamwork

Is that official or is that just Kakashi's take on it?

Also are Apprenticeships fanon or are there examples?

IIRC it was from a databook
Still, it wouldn't make sense for Kakashi to judge something completely different than everybody else.
And, really, "Actual Teamwork" is kind of the only thing such supplementary exam could test: anything else would be a waste of time, as simply rising the requisites to pass the Graduation would be enough.

Really, why a double exam on the same shit?
Also are Apprenticeships fanon or are there examples?
Fanon.

Or, more specifically, Apprenticeships appears to be supplementary to Teams: all the Apprentices we've seen have been on normal teams as well.
Well, we don't know about Shizune but it's likely she was a normal Genin before skipping town with Tsunade. Hell, she might well been one of Tsunade's Genins.
Most likely, becoming somebody's apprentice usually happens once you reach Chūnin(and therefore you "graduate" from sharing a teacher with other two to getting your own personal trainer)

While I go take the picture, I've got a question on what else I should focus on.

Hyo no Sho has several sections. I've been going at them willy-nilly, but... well, I can talk about the following [some things only brushed over, because obviously we didn't know anything until later]:
-Countries and Ninja Villages
-Konoha's Army
-Important Ninjas [only really talks about Team 7 and Iruka]
-Ninja Missions
-Ninja Academy
-Masashi Kishimoto
-Random Q&As

Pick something, pick something.

I linked these recently translated entries from the first databook in the question thread not too long along and the recent focus on the Hyuuga reminded me of it. Seems more appropriate to leave it here.

Iron Law of the Hyuuga Clan

With their esteemed lineage, the Hyuuga clan passes down its jutsu only from the clan head to the heir*. Consequently, disparity between the main family and side branch family has been very clearly shown. Also, the children of the side branch family have the curse seal engraved on their foreheads at the age of three, restraining them to prevent rebellion.

*The Japanese term refers to a father passing down a trade secret to only one of his children, so I assumed it was talking about the techniques that were reserved for the main branch.

(Caption accompanying a panel of Neji with his curse seal revealed)
A curse seal indicating “a bird in a cage.”

Finally, this page shows the Hyuuga family tree mapped out, from Hiashi and Hizashi's father, then from Hiashi to Hinata and Hanabi, then from Hizashi to Neji. A little detail I thought was interesting to note is that the picture for Hiashi and Hizashi's father is a black silloette, so unless the other data books say otherwise, I take this to mean that the Hyuuga elder shown in chapter 105 is not their father, despite the wiki sites saying that he is.

Hyuuga Hanabi

The girl who possessed the ability to surpass her older sister Hinata.

Birthday: March 27 (7 years old, Aries)
Height: 132.4 cm
Weight: 28.9 kg
Blood type: A
Favorite foods: Bananas, milk
Least favorite food: Mitsuba (Japanese Honeywort)
Hobby: Training with her father

Hinata’s sister who is 5 years younger. Having been said to possess the potential to become far stronger than Hinata, she was given special training by her father Hiashi. However, since Hanabi is still young, she has little practical experience, and so her true ability is unknown. In the future, there is also a high likelihood that the one to inherit the main branch of Hyuuga clan after Hiashi passes away will be Hanabi.

(This last part is a caption shown with a manga panel from chapter 78 where Hiashi states "[Hinata] is a failure who can't even measure up to Hanabi, who is 5 years younger.")

Her father Hiashi’s expectations are high. Could the same be true for the pressure on Hanabi…?

Hyuuga Hiashi

The Stoic Head of the Hyuuga Family

Presently, the one serving as head of the Hyuuga family is Hiashi. It can be said that he possesses an even callous strictness concerning the protection of the dignity of the Hyuuga, and so he completely abandoned Hinata, who was of lesser ability, and continually gives thorough training to her younger sister, Hanabi. In response to a huge conspiracy which befell the Hyuuga clan during bitter times, he had even resolved to deal with it by sacrificing his own life. Strict with others everywhere, and also strict with himself, he is a suitable man to be head of the Hyuuga family.

(Caption with a panel from chapter 105 with the Hyuuga elder talking about protecting the Byakugan.)
There are painful fates even for those in the main family. That is [the way of] the Hyuuga clan.

(Caption with a panel from chapter 78 where Hiashi says that the Hyuuga don’t need Hinata.)
He possesses the mentality of “throw out the weaklings.”

(Caption with the panel from chapter 105 where Hiashi tells Neji that he had intended to die rather than have Hizashi do it.)
The great clan head who possessed the strength to not even fear death.

Hyuuga Hizashi

(The box with his name includes his rank of jounin at the bottom. Hiashi’s profile does not include this.)

The man whose tragic fate defied destiny

Existing for the sake of protecting the main family, decisions of defiance are not permitted for the branch family. [Hizashi is] Hiashi’s younger twin brother who lived bearing that sad fate. At one point, despite that he hated the main family, at the end of his life he had wanted to protect Konoha, the home of his beloved son Neji, and so he chose a fate that was considered a death a for the sake of protecting the main family, and went to die honorably.

(Caption of panel from chapter 105 where Hizashi says he wants to choose his own fate.)
This was the “freedom” that Hizashi finally obtained. (Literally: first obtained in the end)

(Caption of panel from chapter 102 with Hizashi’s curse mark activated.)
He resented the main family, and even suffered for it at times.

Gonna retranslate these.

Iron Laws of the Hyuuga Clan

The Hyuuga clan values the issue of lineage highly. Through restricting the inheritance of its powers to only one of its heirs, the difference in treatment given to the Branch house is clear. When a Branch child completes three years of age, a juin is placed on its forehead to prevent rebellions.

More talented than Hinata, her older sister.

Is Hinata’s younger sister, by about 5 years. It is said that Hanabi is much more talented than her older sister and has received special treatment. Since she's still too young, she has no experience in [real situations] practical experiences and, due to that, it's still not possible to measure her power. It's very likely that she'll be the successor to the Hyuuga clan after Hiashi passes away.

(This last part is a caption shown with a manga panel from chapter 78 where Hiashi states "[Hinata] is a failure who can't even measure up to Hanabi, who is 5 years younger.")

Expectations on her are very high. She must feel plenty of pressure from her father.

Hyuuga Hiashi
I humbly ask you to believe in me...
The Current Head of the Hyuuga Family is Very Serious

Hiashi si the current leader of the Hyuuga clan. He is very severe when it comes to protecting the clan, to the point of completely ignoring Hinata, who has very little talent, and focusing solely on teaching Hanabi, his youngest daughter.
When young, he even offered his own life so he could protect the clan from an evil scheme. He's always severe towards others and himself, befitting the position of Hyuuga clan leader.

(Caption with a panel from chapter 105 with the Hyuuga elder talking about protecting the Byakugan.)
Fate is tough even to the main lineage. That's how the Hyuuga clan is.

(Caption with a panel from chapter 78 where Hiashi says that the Hyuuga don’t need Hinata.)
His motto is "no place for the weak".

(Caption with the panel from chapter 105 where Hiashi tells Neji that he had intended to die rather than have Hizashi do it.)
A great leader who does not fear death.

An unlucky man who defied his own destiny

Hizashi was Hiashi's younger brother and belonged to the branch family, whose role is to protect the main family and never go against it. Hizashi had a bitter life and bore his sad fate to the end. There was a time where he hated and envied the main family. However, in the end, he chose death to protect both the main family as the Hidden Leaf Village, where his beloved son lives.

(Caption of panel from chapter 105 where Hizashi says he wants to choose his own fate.)
This was the first and last time Hizashi had freedom of choice.

(Caption of panel from chapter 102 with Hizashi’s curse mark activated.)
There was a time when he cursed the main family.

Why the heck did they have such a high hand seal stat? Hyuga jutsu are all pure chakra control. I think the only time we've seen a Hyuga use one is when Hinata used a Ram seal to activate her Byakugan.

Well chakra control is presumably part of using hand seals - I assume a regular civilian can't perform a jutsu just by making the right seals in the right order if they haven't trained to control their own chakra. So having high talent for pure chakra control would automatically make them also good at using regular seals. Plus all those finger strikes and pressure point techniques would give them excellent manual dexterity. So the Hyuuga should be pretty good with handseals even though they use them relatively rarely.

Also it seems like a lot of "sealless" jutsu actually do have seals, but the users are talented enough to drop the seals and perform all the chakra control internally. For example Jiraiya confirmed that handseals do exist for the Rasengan, he just refused to teach them to Naruto and made him learn the jutsu the hard way. Sasuke also learned how to drop the handseals from chidori and uses it without seals all the time, and we've seen Tobirama and Itachi perform the water dragon jutsu with one handseal when it took Zabuza and Kakashi 42 seals to cast that jutsu. So a lot of those "pure chakra control" Hyuuga jutsu probably do have handseals and Hyuuga children initially learn to use them with handseals, but most Hyuuga practice them until they can drop the seals because handseals are way too slow and distracting for taijutsu experts.

exactly, they are so good they drop them

Found this in Tobirama's second databook entry.

In contrast to his calm older brother, his nature is to push forward towards his objective with passion and enthusiasm.

So I downloaded the raws for Databook 1 and 2, cut out some of the extras and slapped them into a pair of imgur albums for easy viewing. Doesn't mean much if you can't read Japanese but hey, it's something to look at.

Databook 1 and Databook 2.

Got my hands on English scans for the Third Databook so here's an album you can actually read. If only I could get a refund now.

In others news I've been putting together all the existing translations for the first and second databooks in my spare time. Once that's collected and edited, I'll probably put it on the Naruversity. Might do the same for the fourth eventually because doing it here is a pain.

I love how Sakura's profile repeatedly emphasizes her talent with genjutsu. :snigger:

Gaara's father is the "head of his clan"... what clan is that? Neither him or any of his children have a family name.

The head shinobi... "died on the battlefield?" ...That's an interesting way to describe his death, considering he was a kidnapper who was killed while trying to flee from his victim's home.
