The Recommended Anime/Manga Thread

What the title says, slightly different from the "What are you Watching/Reading?" threads.

As I've posted before I'm getting back into watching Anime again after not doing so for a long time. Mostly because I was lazy and reading manga. Now I've got a ton of new shows to sift through to find the good stuff. So far I've been doing all right. I've not come across anything I've not at least enjoyed enough to finish. Still I crave more, and I'm sure there are others who might have missed a gem or two along the way.

This thread is for the good stuff that people should watch both new and old. The stuff that shouldn't be missed and not the merely okay or 'twas decent type stuff. Stand out series that are above and beyond the average show. The personal favorites so to speak.

Angel Beats is really great for example. Haven't read the manga so I can't comment on that, but the Anime is one I highly recommend to anyone who hasn't seen it. It takes a bit to start getting good, but it does some amazing things and has lots of heavy feels for the type of show that it is.

I don't think I've ever been more amused reading a manga than I was when I read Sora No Otoshimono, [or Heaven's Lost Property]. I'm not really sure why, because it's basically an updated Urusei Yatsura, but it's well done and hit the right comedy beats to keep me chuckling at it.

I really enjoyed "Kill La Kill" despite the stupid premise. It turned out to be an enjoyable action heavy series. Gurren Lagann being it's less liked and not as good at anything younger sibling. I've heard people say they didn't like Gurren Lagann who enjoyed Kill La Kill.

There are also a few obvious choices, such as Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Ninja Scroll, Cowboy Beebop, and a long list I know I'm forgetting.

At any rate, post the best stuff you know of for Anime or manga series or movies.

Mondaiji Tachi is an awesome show that I feel didn't get enough attention when it came out. It sorely needs a second season though, because the novels start getting epic later on. Also, lots of great music.

Nurarihyon no Mago is also pretty good for a shounen action series, although the split personality things get's a little confusing at some points. Great series none the less.

Mushibugyou is good if you're looking for some Samurai vs Kaiju. Only the Kaiju are giant insects, being lead by S**** Y****** and his group of Insect men. Jinbei is also quite possible the dumbest MC I've ever seen, while still being really likable. Has a bit of fanservice as well, for those who like that.

Inou-Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de. Watch it. That is all.

Got to agree about Nararihyon no Mago. I read the manga and really enjoyed it. I stopped when I caught up with where it was a while before it was finished but recently got it from Mangatraders so I could finish it up.

Inou-battle wa Nichjou-kei no Naka de is in my cache on Crunchyroll, I was actually planning on watching it as soon as I finish up Nisekoi, which is turning out to be pretty decent for a high school love triangle comedy. I'm only on episode 5 right now though. It's next in line on my watch list for sure though.

Hadn't heard of the other two, will give them a look though. Both sound interesting.

I've recently discovered that there are a surprising number of Anime that are based off of dating sim and VN type of games. The World God Only Knows, If Her Flag Breaks, My Mental Choices are Completely Interfering with my Highschool Romantic Comedy, all seem to have interesting premises based on the idea of mechanics in those type of games. An entirely new subgenere of Anime created since I was last keeping up with it regularly.

That said, I've only seen The World God Only Knows among those anime, and it deserves a recommendation here.

On the Manga front I've been re-reading Hunter X Hunter. I stopped when he took a break during that Cell Saga rip off part of the manga and never got back to it. Now that it's being continued I'm giving it another go because I barely remember the first part of the story and can't just pick up where I left off. I recall it being particularly brutal for the type of Shonen it first appears to be. Not Berserk level brutal, but more than you'd expect from how it plays out in the early parts.

If someone has the stomach for extremely dark, gory, and horrifying and gothic storytelling, I highly recommend both Berserk and Claymore. Berserk is the worst of the two, it seriously gets really awful. Gantz is another in this vein that's worth checking out, but with a more supernatural/sci-fi vibe to it. None of those three manga is for the faint of heart though. Seriously, this is some seriously hardcore stuff we're talking about here.

I'd watch Mondaiji first, it's only got 10 episodes, plus one fanservice fueled OVA.

Izayoi is awesome, and keeps getting more so in the LN.

Cool, I can probably do that in a day then. Will do.
