I feel like he has some good points about the series.

After some time away, I watched the first 3 episodes chapters of season volume 5. I tried to do this a week ago, but had a bad headache (some wags would say that was from watching RWBY, but it was really from my booster shot).

The setpieces and environments look gorgeous. Mistral has a lot of nice spots, both in the outdoor area, and inside the academy. Heck, even Salem's conference room thingie in the second episode looks neat.

Unfortunately, the flip side of that is...the animation. There's always been spots in earlier seasons where there are 'still shots' of background actors, but episodes 1 and 3 here has a lot of moments between Mistral and Menagerie where the shot lingers on groups of people for several seconds, only for them to either not be moving at all or just barely be shaking in place. Kind of a big letdown. There are a few gag shots like when Yang knocks out the guy at the bar and he goes up and down in a funny bounce, or when Ozpin-as-Oscar spins his cane for several seconds without a break, where it feels like they went for the gag solely because it was the easiest to animate.

Heck, Weiss' fight with the Grimm in episode 2 felt like the most boring battle in the series so far. Nothing really riveting. Some of that is forced by the stage of battle, where she can't exactly just fly out and do close-combat and can instead only do long-range attacks, but even then, there's no oomph. She throws out a few boxes of dust at the Queen and blows it up, then has her summon magic show up and just take out the Queen in an uncompelling slash. Boring.

The plot I guess is moving along a little. The Raven subplot should hopefully be interesting, as she's been a very gradual presence slowly getting built up since season 2. Weiss being trapped in her camp prior to any raid from either Qrow or Salem is neat. Oscar's subplot is moving along, and he should break Team RNJR in to being a stronger yet team, though I feel like him outing himself to the team as being Ozpin's reincarnation-ish was done at lightspeed, when it could have been more gradual. Blake's subplot is the one I actually wish would move faster. They done Adam dirty, though. He's just unbelievably edgy with no real interesting character.

So wait. Did they actually have a hot tigergirl on screen that could have been the subject of a thousand lewd pics only to kill her off after 2 minutes? Unbelievable.

Oscar's not Oz's reincarnation. He's basically possessed by him, and slowly being taken over/fused into him.

I mean, it would be nice to have some competent writers for a change...

Weiss' winter outfit looks kind of like the stereotypical anime vision of a 'pale Aryan beauty'. Extremely pale white skin. Very light blond or outright white hair. Overcoat and dress suit that if it were black would have come out of the Hugo Boss Design School for Nazi Clothing.

Speaking of new RWBY stuff, I guess the WayForward game (Arrowfell) was delayed into this year. Besides the delay, I haven't seen anything else for news since the July reveal.

Ice Queendom starts airing July 3

The visual for Blake very vaguely looks like she has a tail, but that could just be a fringe off her coat. I guess I'll have to wait and see if that's truly the case in the anime. Giving Faunus both ears and a tail is one design change I'd be all over for

Wow, they really couldn't be arsed to give Jaune a new design, could they?

Jaune didn't get a new design, at all, no. And they gave Pyrrha Weiss' vol4 look. The anime is beyond lazy- it's uninspired. And frankly, no one should have expected any different.

Anyways. I watched the first 3 episodes of RWBY Ice Queendom with its special 3-episode advance premiere. I neglected to mention my thoughts earlier.

The animation feels a little jarring. I think it's functional, but it just seems too...basic? And perhaps too colorful. Everything is filled in with almost no shading to the visuals. There's no more character silhouettes, but in return, there's not a lot of idle background events going on either. Some pretty visual effects, like some shimmering water in episode 3, but then you get long periods of still shots, still shots with one character's mouth barely moving, or panning shots.

There's a new OP. It's definitely not Red like Roses.

Also, since it's only available in JP voice acting for now, I find some of the voice acting rather less desirable. Sayori Hayami's voice acting as Ruby seems a little too 'childish' in inflection, or just too high-pitched, maybe? A sore difference from how she voices Yor Briar in Spy x Family. I definitely prefer Lindsay Jones' Ruby here.

The first episode mostly adapts the Red, White, and Black trailers, along with volume 1 chapter 1, skipping the Yellow Trailer entirely for some reason. It doesn't quite follow shot-for-shot, as Taiyang, Klein, Whitley, Winter and Jacques all get speaking appearances already with a few extra scenes, but it very closely follows most of the beats otherwise. Also, for some reason they unintentionally made Whitley capable of warping by having him be behind Weiss in one shot and then five seconds later is on the complete other end of a big-ass arena from her.

The second episode follows the Emerald Forest test, and they introduce some new priest-witch-huntress character Shion in a couple of brief 'ah, she's so mysterious' scenes.

Episode 3 adapts basically the rest of Volume 1, including introducing everyone's best girl Penny. However, it skips Forever Fall, and adapts it out to bring in the new plot element of Ice Queendom, the Nightmare Grimm that can infect a person and take over his or her dreams. In this case, it takes over Jaune, and said above priest-witch-huntress Shion uses a spell to help the rest of Team JNPR defeat it. Of course, it's basically flat-out shown Weiss is also being taken over by a Nightmare.

Numerous call-forwards to stuff that happens in later seasons. Like Nora talking about being queen of the castle.

Episode 4 of Ice Queendom is released, and it's 100% pure new stuff. Given the Schnee family relationship in the show, Weiss' dream world really sells the family's dysfunctional relationship. This is where everyone starts to wear their winter uniforms too (or at least Ruby and Weiss do). There's only about 30 seconds of fighting near the end, so hoping the animation studio shows its chops with some good fighting choreography soon.

Also, Crescent Rose now also doubles as a snowboard.

RWBY: Arrowfell is out now. It sounds like it will be getting a physical launch later, so I may pick it up when that occurs

Considering the complete horror show I've heard from the few people I know who have been playing it, I'm not sure anyone ought to pick it up- let alone on the off chance it might support RT.

But is Raven wrong, though.

Vol9 was a clusterfuck- it had some redeeming moments, but overall was bad. Why no, I'm not bitter- what do you mean I'm definitely holding a grudge over them **CUTTING EPISODES DOWN BY A THIRD, ONLY DOING TEN EPISODES, AND SPENDING MOST OF THE VOLUME DOING IRRELEVANT SHIT?**

She had someone better and chose Yang anyway, so yes?

And most of that was because they had to work on the DC crossover movie.
