Naruto Times the anime one-upped the manga

Boruto: Next Generations is now out and about.
I'm confused by the fact that Boruto and the rest are only now attending the academy. I'm not sure how old they are here but they look about 10 at least when it used to be when they were like 5 back in the day.
Seeing Boruto and Shikadai just run across rooftops and jump off trains was oddly nice to watch.
Boruto randomly switches his 'Byakugan' on and off. I say that skeptically because it doesn't have the veins popping up and looks like it turns the rest of his eye black.
Cliche nerd victim introduced to become Boruto's bestie. He's just gonna get tested aside for Mitsuki at some point.
Hinata constantly talks about how cool her husband is apparently. Not surprised.
And I was annoyed that Naruto just stood and watched the train crash when he probably could have caught the thing.

Episode 2 (April 12) - Hokage’s Son Boruto, who reprimanded after the incident that occurred during the Entrance Ceremony, is attending the Academy for the first time. However, his classmates’ eyes were frosty towards Boruto, as the son of the hero the 7th Hokage who had already been punished. Of them, Boruto tries to pick a fight with Iwabe Yuino, a classmate who was held back a year due to poor behavior, but was ignored.
Episode 3 (April 19) - Rampage, Metal Lee!! Boruto’s classmate Metal Lee is a hardworking and superb Taijutsu user. However, his easily nervous personality has caused him to be unable to perform at his best when he is the centre of attention. One day, his classmate Shikadai Nara said something to him off handedly.
Episode 4 (April 26) - The Ninjutsu Battle Between the Boys and Girls!! At the suggestion of the class teacher Shino Aburame, the boys and girls split into separate teams to participate in a game of capture the flag on the rooftop. The boys, including Boruto, quickly make their way towards the flag, but traps were set up on the way, and they enter a bitter battle with the girls team, who have centered themselves around Sarada Uchiha and Chouchou Akimichi.
Episode 5 (May 3) - The Mysterious Transfer Student…!! A transfer student called Mitsuki has transferred from the Hidden Sound. He defeats Iwabe during the sparring lesson, and shows considerable talent in academics as well……

In their desperation, fans have clung to the theory that it's based on dark lightning.
But I don't doubt that the anime just took advantage of Kishimoto/Kodachi never officially stating the chakra nature used in the movie/manga without putting any real thought into it. It was 'foreshadowed' when Sasuke claimed that Boruto had shown an inclination to Lightning Release during their training.
