Tranquility of the Evening Calm
A Love Hina/Mahou Sensei Negima! Fanfic

-- -- -- -- -- --

With a sigh, Sakura Mei brushed a strand of her brown hair from in front of her eyes and took a quick glance around the DeanÆs Offices waiting room before she focused on the computer screen in front of her. When Shizuna-sensei suggested becoming her part-time student assistant, Mei had been over the moon. Not only did she receive class credit, but she was also in a position get a closer look at the inner workings of the magical side of Mahora Academy and a chance to work close with Dean Konoe Konoemon; one of the premier magic users on Earth and the head of the Kantou Magic Association.

She didnÆt expect to have to compile a list of eligible bachelors so the Dean could arrange another omiai for his granddaughter.

Despite the drawbacks, Mei was glad that not only did she become ShizunaÆs assistant; but that she also decided to transfer to Japan and Mahora Academy. Not only was she learning about how Eastern Mages performed magic and how they were organized, but her own skills were growing by leaps and bounds. Between training with Takane-senpai and Seruhiko-sensei, the occasional advice from Kataragi-sensei and Gandolfini-sensei and the rare nugget of wisdom from the Dean himself; Mei knew that she was much stronger that even she though was originally possible. Even her opponent from the Mahora Martial Arts Tournament had taught her several things that were already improving her physical skills.

Thinking of the Tournament, Mei couldnÆt help the brief grin that crossed her face. Her friends had been soooo jealous when they heard that she had been a part of it. Sure, she had lost in the first round...in a most embarrassing wayàwithout landing a hitàor even being hitàand almost drowningàbut at least she wasnÆt stripped on stage!

æPoor onee-sama,Æ Mei thought with a grimace, æI donÆt think that sheÆll ever forgive Negi-sensei for doing that to her; twice no less. At least the only time that happened to me was away from any crowds.Æ

Still, despite her less than stellar performance during the Tournament and the æMain EventÆ of MahoraFest, all of MeisÆ friends from the Johnson Magical School were impressed and in some cases shocked that she had done so much during her time here in Japan.

æHopefully onee-sama will be able to relax and forget about what Negi-sensei did to her during the ôsuper-secret special tripö sheÆs planning.Æ Mei sighed before she returned her attention back to the DeanÆs æprojectÆ.

However, before she was able to get too far into her work, a soft cough caught her attention.

ôExcuse me? Is Konoe-sensei in?ö

Looking up from the monitor, MeiÆs eyes widened in surprise. Standing across the desk was a stunningly beautiful Japanese woman with long, black hair dressed in a white gi and red hakama holding a bamboo hat before her. However there were two things that immediately drew the young mageÆs attention, the first being the beautiful golden bird that was perched on the womanÆs shoulder.

ôDo you have an appointment?ö Mei asked as casually as she could as she opened the appointment book with one hand while she fingered her pactio card under the desk with the other; all the while trying to not look at the other thing that caught her attention.

The sheathed shirasaya the woman carried at her side.

ôUnfortunately, I do not.ö The woman said with an apologetic smile. ôHowever, if you could let Konoe-sensei know that Tsuruko from the Aoyama Dojo is here to speak with him? IÆm sure that if he isnÆt too busy that heÆll see me.ö

ôOne moment,ö Mei said as she picked up the phone and hit the intercom button. ôKonoe-sensei?ö

ôHo, ho, ho. What can I do for you, Mei-chan?ö the Dean replied with a jovial tone.

ôI apologize for the interruption, Konoe-sensei; however there is a Tsuruko from the Aoyama Dojo here to see you.ö Mei answered; her free hand still on her pactio card.

The line was quiet for a moment before the Dean responded, his jolly attitude missing. ôPlease send her in, Mei-chan.ö

Hanging up the phone, Mei relaxed slightly. ôThe Dean will see you now.ö

ôThank you.ö Tsuruko said with a smile and a polite nod as the bird on her shoulder crooned softly.

After the woman entered the DeanÆs Office, Mei finally relaxed and shook her head. As neither name meant anything to the young Mage and the impromptu meeting was taking place in Konoe-senseiÆs own office, she wasnÆt too worried about anything going wrong. However, as a precaution, she reminded herself to keep an eye on the security light on the desk in case something happened as she got back to work.

About a half hour later, the office door opened again and both Tsuruko and the Dean steeped into the waiting room.

ôàso there are no plans to recall her?ö the Dean was saying as they exited the office.

ôOf course not.ö Tsuruko said, assuring Konoe-sensei. ôI agree with my imouto that her place is here. However, depending on how things go, I plan to stay here and visit for a while.ö

ôOf course, of course.ö The Dean said. ôWell, if I remember correctly, she just finished with her classes for the day. If you hurry, I believe that you can catch up with her before she begins her club activates.ö

ôThank you, Konoe-sensei.ö Tsuruko said, bowing formally to the Dean as the bird on her shoulder trilled. ôIf you will excuse me.ö

Receiving a nod from the Dean, the woman turned to leave, but paused next to the desk that Mei was sitting at. ôPardon meàbut do you have any family living in the Hinata Ward?ö

ôNo. All of my family is in America.ö Mei replied with confusion.

ôI see. I apologize; itÆs just that you remind me of someone who is living in an inn there. Anyway, if you happen to be in that area, IÆd suggest that you stop by the Hinata-sou; they have a lovely hot spring there. Tell them that Tsuruko sent you and IÆm sure that youÆll get a discount.ö

With a smile from the woman and a beating of wing from the bird, Tsuruko walked gracefully out of the room.

After she left, the Dean turned and said, ôMei-chan? If you could, please contact Shizuna-kun and Toko-kun and ask them to come here? And when theyÆre both here, why donÆt you come in as well; you might learn something.ö

It took only fifteen minutes for both woman to arrive and soon all three were standing before the DeanÆs desk.

ôYou wanted to see us sir?ö Shizuna-sensei asked.

ôYes, yes. There has been a change to the information on one of our students, Shizuna-kun; and Mei-chan is here to expand her horizons a bit.ö The Dean explained as he held a letter in his hand that he extended forward. ôHowever, the reason that youÆre here, Toko-kun, is this.ö

The blonde Shinmei-ryuu stepped forward and accepted the letter. Opening it, Toko scanned it quickly before she sucked in her breath sharply.

ôTsuruko-tonoàis here?!ö Toko asked, looking at the Dean with wide eyes.

ôCorrect. In fact, sheÆs on her way to see Setsuna-chan as we speak.ö The elder Mage said.

ôWhat!ö The blonde exclaimed, her normally calm composure disappearing. ôBut thatÆs been forbidden byàö

ôApparently,ö the Dean interrupted, ôthe situation has changed.ö

ôIàseeàö Toko said slowly.

ôApparently, Tsuruko is here to not only inform the both of you of those changes but to also to inform Setsuna-chan of certainàtruths.ö The Dean said in explanation.

TokoÆs eyes went wide and her jaw dropped. ôàtruthsà?ö she asked slowly.

ôIndeed.ö The elder Mage confirmed.

Mei was trying to fill in the blanks and follow the conversation, but it was obvious that she was missing something. The only Setsuna that she knew that would be talked about so casually here was Sakurazaki Setsuna from Mahora GirlÆs Middle School Class 3-A; Negi-senseiÆs student and apparently one of his Ministra Magi. Mei could guess that this had some business dealing with the Shinmei-ryuu, since she knew both Setsuna and Toko-san were both used that style and since Tsuruko was caring a sword, Mei assumed that she did as well. But beyond thatà

Catching Shizuna-senseiÆs eye, Mei sent a questioning glance; only to receive a small shrug of the shoulders and a patient smile in return.

During her silent conversation with Shizuna-sensei, the blonde swordswoman had regained her composure.

ôThat will make things interesting.ö Toko said before pausing. ôWaitàyou said that Tsuruko-tono went to see Setsuna?ö

When the Dean nodded, Mei was surprised when Toko went completely white.

ôàshit!ö

Well, here's the start of the idea I posted in the Miscellaneous ideas topic. No idea where I'm going with this, but we'll see...

Negima! time-line would put this somewhere in the middle of Period 168. So we're post-MahoraFest, pre-Mega Resort training, school's still in session but Negi's decided to searching for his father and has asked Asuna and other people have started to invite themselves along.

As for the Love Hina time-line; well, we're about 2 years post-manga and about 2 years pre-epilogue.

Depending on ideas, I might tie in an idea that I had that atrophied on me. Said idea can be found here.

...Thoughts?

Hmmmm......So this is the "Tsuruko is Setsuna's mother" idea?

While it is an interesting idea, I'm not really sure how this is going to really change anything in the Negima world.....So Setsuna has a mom.....so what? (not trying to be mean )

Maybe I'm being closed minded, but I honestly don't really see where you can go with this, either then Setsuna meeting Tsuruko, Tsuruko meeting Setsuna's friends, and Setsuna meeting the Love Hina crew......then what? Tsuruko trains the Negima crew in something? Is there really much she could teach? Maybe something to Setsuna. Will meeting her mother change Setsuna much, if at all?

While its an interesting idea, and explains Setsuna's origins, I can't really see this going anywhere past Setsuna and Tsuruko meeting and the events that follow. Unless she goes with, Tsuruko's role ends once Negi & friends leave for the magic world. Though I suppose you could include crack with Tsuruko trying to get Setsuna married to further the clan.

That being said, I liked how you started this, especially that Mei's job is to compile a list of eligible bachelors for the Dean. Also, I am very curious on why Toko is so worried about Tsuruko going to see Setsuna. I am obvilously missing something, probably because I never got very far in the Love Hina series (manga or anime).

So, while interesting, I don't really know where you can go with this.

Also
ôTsuruko-tonoàis here?!ö Toko asked, looking at the Dean with wide eyes.
and
ôThat will make things interesting.ö Toko said before pausing. ôWaitàyou said that Tsuruko-tono went to see Setsuna?ö
Is this supposed to be dono? I ask because I've never seen 'tono' added at the end of a name before....

I agree about the whole 'where to go with this' thing, but I'm playing around with some ideas in my head (which is why I linked to my dead fic in the earlier post). I'm also open to any ideas anyone might have.

As for the dono/tono thing; everything I can find says that they are both the same thing; but tono is more...archaic and formal. Dono is translating as an official from of address while tono is translating as feudal lord.

Curiously enough, they both are written with the same character. :huh.:

(If I'm wrong, I'll correct it)

As for the thing with Toko; it'll be addressed. But it ties directly into why Mokoto is the one who was going to take over the Dojo and why Setsuna doesn't know that Tsuruko is her mother.

As for why Toko freeking out? Well, she has another form of address for Tsuruko besides tono...

...senpai... :D

ôCome on, Secchan!ö

ôHai, Ojousamaàö

Watching the antics of her roommate and her best friend/bodyguard, Kagurazaka Asuna cracked a smile. Ever since their class had returned from their school trip in Kyoto, Konoe Konoka has been doing everything and anything to worm her way into the heart of her oldest friend. And as for Sakurazaki Setsuna?

The kendoist never had a chance.

As Asuna followed the two girls, she was joined by the Library Trio; Ayase Yue, Miyazaki Nodoka, and Saotome Haruna. The heterochromic girl nodded in greeting and listened to the three chatter along about some book with half an ear. In truth, Asuna was thinking about the future; specifically her future plans to accompany her underage, half-pint teacher Negi Springfield on his trip to locate his missing father; Nagi Springfield.

Half formed ideas and thoughts went through her mind as she reviewed the pieces of the plan she had put together so far. It would take cunning, carefully laid out strategies, the calling in of favors, and even out right begging; but Asuna was sure that she had a workable planàat least to get to the Magical World; Mundus Magicus.

Not that Asuna knew anything about what they would find once they reached Mundus Magicus; but if her plan worked, they would at least get there in one piece.

Of course, before she could even put her plans in to motion, Asuna, along with the rest of Class 3-A, would have to finish out the school year. And that meant final exams; which Asuna were ready for.

Wellàat least she was sure that she would get a decent gradeà

àor at least not failà

àhopefullyà?

It was the ever perky voice of her roommate that drew Baka Red from the downward spiral of her thoughts.

ôOh! Secchan! Everyone! Look!ö

Glancing over where Konoka was gesturing, Asuna did a double take. Perched on one of the stone dividers that lined the sidewalk was a beautiful bird with golden plumage preening itself without a care in the world.

ôIsnÆt it beautiful?ö Konoka said, slowly approaching the bird.

ôHow exquisite!ö said Nodoka breathlessly as she joined Konoka in her admiration.

From HonyaÆs side, Yue took a drink from her juice box and commented ôIÆve never seen any reference to a bird that looked like this before. I wonder what kind of bird it isàö

Asuna approached as well to get a better look as Paru pulled out a sketch book. All five girls were admiring the bird, several of them making cooing noises while the bird seemed to soak up the attention.

æWaitàfive?Æ Asuna suddenly thought. æWhereÆs Setsuna?Æ

ôSetsuna-san?ö Asuna called out as she looked over her shoulder.

To the heterochromic girlÆs surprise, the kendoist was several feet behind the group of girls and slowly backing away. More worrisome were her wide-eyed, panicked look and the death grip on the sheath and hilt of her sword.

ôSetsuna-san! WhatÆs wrong?ö Asuna called out again, this time attracting the attention of the other girls.

ôTsàtsàtsàtsàö Setsuna stuttered as she continued to back away, constantly scanning her surroundings.

ôSecchan?ö Konoka asked, making to move towards the kendoist.

ôOjousama! No!ö Commanded Setsuna as she continued backing away, surprising everyone present. ôDonÆt come any closer!ö

ôSecchan?ö the hurt in the DeanÆs granddaughtersÆ voice was evident.

ôWhatÆs wrong Setsuna-san?ö Asked Asuna as she tried to use her own training to see what the problem.

ôItÆsàö she started to say as she drew parallel to an alleyway.

Asuna saw SetsunaÆs head snap to the side to look into the alley and her eyes go wide a moment before gale force winds picked up the dark haired girl and threw her across the street, where she slammed into the side of a building three stories up.

ôSecchan!!!ö Konoka screamed while Asuna kept a hand on her shoulder to keep her from running to her friend.

Asuna noticed her martial arts teacher land on the ground somewhat gracefully and hold her still sheathed nodachi up in guard position and was vaguely aware of the Library Trio panicking and Konoka squirming under her grip. Most of her attention, however, was focused on the alleyway where, a moment later, her vigilance was rewarded.

ôMost impressive, Setsuna-han. You were able to block my attack.ö A woman wearing a white gi and red hakama said as she moved fluidly out of the alley. Her face was obscured by a bamboo hat, but Asuna could clearly see the long, black hair that fell past her tailbone along with the sheathed shirasaya carried on her left side.

ôBut tell me,ö the woman continued, ôis that all you can do? Block?ö

Faster than Asuna could follow, the woman was above the roofline and falling rapidly; sword drawn and poised to strike Setsuna from above.

Setsuna, sensing more than seeing the incoming attack, unsheathed her nodachi and raised her weapon in time to block the attack; the force of the blow driving her to her knees and cratering the ground beneath her.

Asuna pulled Konoka close to her as the air pressure from the strike kicked up a huge cloud of dust and debris. Once the wind died down, Asuna finally got a look at her friendÆs attacker and saw the womanÆs elegant features locked in what she recognized as a Shinmei-ryuu Battle Mask.

ôShall we?ö the woman asked as their swords locked together.

With a grunt of exertion, Setsuna was able push to the side and disengage the blades, making enough room for her to roll out of womanÆs sword reach. Then, without a backwards glance, Setsuna leapt into the air and rebound of the side of a building and reach the rooftops, the woman hot on her heals.

ôYue, Nodoka. Find Negi-sensei and tell him whatÆs happening.ö Asuna said, her eyes not leaving the rooftops. ôParu; get a hold of Ku Fei and Kaede, we might need them. Konokaàö

ôIÆm going with you.ö Konoka interrupted.

ôKonoka,ö Asuna said. ôThis is serious.ö

ôI know.ö The DeanÆs granddaughter said with steel in her voice. ôSecchan is in trouble and is going to need our help. IÆm going with you.ö

Asuna met her friendÆs eyes for a moment before sighing in defeat. ôSetsuna-san is going to kill meàö she muttered before finally nodding in agreement as she pulled out her pactio card. ôFine, but when I tell you to stay put, youÆll stayàright?ö

Seeing Konoka nod, Asuna turned to the other. ôAlright, letÆs go! Adeat!ö

That was exactly what I expected.

Ahh, fear of Tsuruko, seems Motoko isn't the only Shinmeiryuu Kendoka to fear her.

I would think that Yue would remember the telepathic link the cards give them.

The introduction fits with Tsuruko's personality, though I'm assuming Setsuna isn't aware that Tsuruko's her mother.

Still, Setsuna has a few surprises of her own, such as her card and the power boost Ndegi can give her. Plus there's the rest of the reinforcements.

Tsuruko is probably going to crush them, but I think that the Negima crew will give her a decent workout.

Strangely, I'm looking forward to Tsuruko/Evangeline interaction. Maybe Tsuruko hunted her at some point?

You may want to correct that spelling. Other than that, very good. :yay:
