Unable to Rate Posts

Rate button doesn't work for me anymore. I don't really use it so I only just noticed when trying to rate a post down and it didn't open the little box to rate it.

I once brought up the proposal to actually USE the rating system for a purpose. That was shot down (after a discussion). The only reason we have that rate button on posts, is because the powers-that-be haven't got round to removing it.

If it isn't working now, it will probably be considered as 'issue that resolved itself' kind-of-thing.

But it's a like/dislike system where you can actually say why you liked or disliked it! It lets me just the worth of other users by placing an objective level of measuring the worth of their opinions right next to their name.

That's exactly why they're removing it.

Because feels.

You will probably find that it's borked, like the rest of the site, until the admins fix the probable HTTPS issue.

Bruh, we're an online forum about fanfiction. Mostly weeb fanfiction, at that.

We were literally never cool.

For what it's worth, I still cast my vote to use those buttons, but can't think of any *new* arguments to move the conversation forward.

The ... biggest counter-argument is that because we are an anonymous forum for newbies (we don't conduct background checks), a determined angry author could artificially raise the number of likes in a discussion, people might mistakenly consider a highly-voted post to be 'authoritative' about the discussion, next thing you know, we have a shit-storm on our hands.

Something you need to keep in mind, is that as far as fanfiction goes, we want a story to be able to stand on it's own - it should not become a favourite just because of a number next to it (as Shirotsume indirectly pointed out).

With that in mind, I (sadly) can't think of a good reason to push for actually making use of those 'like/unlike' buttons. Nearest I can think of is spacebattles where they have a similar system (that I admire). But "the other guy is doing it, so we should too" is a really, REALLY bad justification for doing anything. Besides, they (allegedly) have better funding and IT support than us.

Well the system isn't here isn't likes on posts but ratings for the members. You can manually look through the list of ratings they recieved with optional notes on why someone gave it that rating but the Rating is tied to the poster visually not the post.

Here on TFF there's not a lot of likes or dislikes I think because it's not straight forward which makes them have a bit more weight.

Edit: Right now I can actually check the reputation button next to your name and see that you have nothing but positive reviews for being helpful and offering good advice. And I have a couple dislikes because I occasionally shit post.

For either posts or members, I think the overall points I highlighted still apply to both. We have an active member base who come here to criticize. To allow people to 'rate' other people negatively for criticism they do not agree upon is not something we want.

Actually, it's more than just criticism. We *do* allow name-calling. Explicitly. It's in our Rules. You CAN name-call other members here for the flimsiest of justifications (if you care to justify it...). What we discourage (and enforce) is doing it excessively to the point of irritating many other people. That is a VERY subjective opinion and the staff have a LOT of leeway to decide when to enforce.

In the history of this forum, I'm really proud of the community that there have been only a handful of instances where it was necessary to exercise those options (outside of spam posts selling stuff).

Coming back to the point of discussion - even if it is for individual members, we don't want people rating them. Actually, it's a bit worse that way. If for any reason, I don't like ONE particular post you make, I can go out of my way and down-vote a lot of your other posts (as a user) without any real consequences to me. In fact, I think we once had someone in the support section facing that exact issue. We ignored it because, well, the official stance is that those 'points' shouldn't really exist to begin with.

Hrm, neither Quote nor Report work for me either. I'm assuming for a similar reason as the Rate button.
