AN: Part 3-centric. With a few neat things. There'll be some language.

Enjoy.

…

A beautiful man looked at me from atop a long staircase. I’ll never forget his eyes, deep like the night and piercing like the stars. His hair, a beautiful shade of yellow, reminds me of the sun cutting past the mountains, a thought that makes me feel ashamed for some reason. I cannot stop looking at him, as he speaks to me, to us…

Akatsuka, was it? Have you ever thought… about what humans live for?”

A young woman gasped in the middle of her sleep, nearly falling out of bed as she tumbled her sheets out. “W-what…? What was that all about?” she mumbled, barely remembering the dream itself. “Who was that man…?”

As she tried to think about it, she subconsciously moved one of her hands to brush away her hair, only to realize something was off. “Aw, man! My hair’s all frazzled! I thought I was past the age of bed hair!”

With a grumble, she got off the bed and headed to the bathroom, figuring it was better to deal with this sooner than later. It took her a shower and fifteen minutes more to fix it to the point where Akatsuka considered it acceptable for public view, according to her watch. “Too bad my dye’s starting to run out...” she muttered, dumping a bottle in the trash bin. “Guess I’ll go shopping for some more today.”

It was a necessary sacrifice, however; she kept her hair tied in two neat, long buns on the sides of her head, which were then paired with dyed bangs and a braid of the same color to contrast and give her a ‘cool’ look. Red and black weren’t exactly the most compatible of colors, but she thought it was a nice style, to be honest. Besides, with a name like hers, it was only fitting.

As she went back into her room, she saw the computer was turned on, much to her surprise. “Huh? I thought I had turned that thing off…” she muttered, letting out a huff that pushed the a loose red bang back in place. “Whatever. I’ll just turn it off now.”

She was just about to press the button when a crackling noise came from the speaker. “Sorry to say, but ‘I can’t let you do that’.”

Akatsuka took one step back, surprised by the male voice coming out of her computer. It wasn’t running any programs yet! “Whoa, what the hell?! Who are you?”

The time to introduce myself has most likely passed… But nonetheless, call me Steel.”

“Is that even a real name? You’re just lying to me, aren’t you?”

I am not. However, things are more complicated than I had expected… for now, what you need to know is that there’s no need to be afraid. I’ve been searching for someone like you… a courageous youth who desires a ‘special power’.”

Akatsuka glared at the screen. “...do you really expect me to believe that?”

If you don’t believe me, then you just have to call out for your Stand. It will manifest before your very eyes.”

“…my ‘Stand’? What are you talking about?”

Deep inside, you know already. You don’t need me to tell you… you just have to call for its name, and it will answer.”

That was no answer, and she knew it. “…if you don’t show yourself, I’ll have no choice but to call the police.”

I promise everything will make itself clear if you just give it a try. Go on.”

Despite the voice’s attempts at relieving her, Akatsuka only felt more frustrated. What did that voice expect of her? And why did this whole thing feel so off-putting? Was she still half-asleep?

Even as these thoughts were twisting in her mind, however, she remembered the dream. Aside from the beautiful man, she remembered another, one who stood by her side. The words came out before she even realized what she was saying.

“‘Red Garland’!” Akatsuka called out, raising a hand in front of her while posing. A few seconds passed, before she scowled. “Nothing. Are you satisfied?” she asked, ignoring the red aura forming around her.

Toro!

The red-and-black-haired girl nearly jumped out of her towel, as she heard the loud grunt right by her ear. Turning around, she saw the second man from her dream, some kind of tall, bulky soldier clad in red armor that resembled a Roman soldier’s, including the helmet, but lacking the intricate details of those. His helmet had a burning flame at the very top, and both the golden scarf and combat skirt he wore were also on fire as well, but she couldn’t feel the heat despite being so near him nor smell its burning scent. The only detailing in his armor belonged to the golden gauntlets he wore, marked with a sign of flames, and the buckle of his belt area, despite seemingly lacking one.

“W-who...” Akatsuka stammered, before realizing it. “Y-you’re… Red Garland?”

The warrior didn’t answer, but as her shock quieted down, she realized that she could see through him, to some degree; if she tried really hard, it was like his body disappeared from sight. However, she also had a strange feeling, as they both looked at each other – it was as if she could see through his eyes as well.

You can see it, I presume? That is your Stand…” Steel spoke at that point, reminding her of his presence. “In layman’s terms, it’s a superpower. The apparition standing in front of you is an extension of your body, so to speak. Generally, each Stand has one unique special ability. These abilities can flout the laws of physics and defy the imagination… Your Stand will surely become an indispensable ally.”

Akatsuka had to admit that she liked the sound of that, but there was something about it she didn’t like. It didn’t help that she had a bad feeling regarding that dream of hers, given how she didn’t remember having any control over Red Garland before now – yet he stood by her then like an old friend.

“...okay. So what gives? Why did you give me this power?”

I… I’m simply the remnant of a man who was killed by one of these ‘Stands’. Think of me like how you would a prerecorded message.” Those words made her eyes widen, but it somehow wasn’t as much of a punch to the gut as she expected it to be, right after.

“Then what do you want with me?”

“…I want to change this world’s future. Something has to be done, and you’re one of those who would become involved in such events… all I did was ensure you had your Stand available by then.” Akatsuka looked at the screen, frowning a little. Was that really what she had heard? “What you must do is take out a certain person… That insidious vampire, DIO!”

“D-DIO?!” she stammered. “Did you just say ‘DIO’?”

Yes, I have. A vampire who has recently returned from the depths of the world, a monster who feeds on humans and has caused much sorrow in his path… if anyone is true ‘Evil’ in this world, then it would be DIO!”

“But you’re asking me to kill a man! Even if he’s a vampire, isn’t that just as evil?”

You aren’t aware of all he has done, so I don’t blame you for being skeptical at this point… still, the warning stands. Now that your Stand has awakened, DIO and his many assassins will not remain ignorant of you for long… they will eventually find out about you, and you will be considered a threat to their power.”

“Thought so...” Akatsuka muttered, glaring at the screen. “I can’t believe this… being asked to kill a guy I never met because that’ll improve the future. You’re crazy, you know that?”

Haven’t you heard, ‘with great power comes great responsibility’?” She rolled her eyes upon hearing that. “This is simply a consequence of the thing you yourself wished for. The Stand you have is a power you desired, one that was granted to you. I’m simply the one who came to you and informed you of that. There are those who would be threatened by your power, and would seek to end you, due to that…”

“…you’re lucky you’re dead, you hear that?” the red-and-black-haired girl said, really wishing he wasn’t right now. “You’re getting on my nerves with all this talk. Killing people is wrong, you know.”

Yes. But those who come to join DIO are creatures of lower moral than you or I, and will kill you without regret if it comes to that. If you left DIO to his own devices, your friends and family would be at risk. Even if you weren’t aware of it, you knew you needed a ‘protector’…” She ‘tsk’ed at that, not amused at the idea. She hardly needed protecting, after all. “One more thing. Those who oppose DIO are more numerous than I expected… your journey will be full of danger, but you may not need to fight alone, after all.”

“Great. Like this guy isn’t enough company as it is.”

This is your destiny. I’m only helping to move it along. Now… Head to school. Just like you would any other day.”

With that last warning, the computer turned off.

…

Akatsuka had only just made it out of her house, now dressed in her school uniform, when a new sight caught her eyes; a small doll was lying on the ground, by the end of the sidewalk.

“Huh? Now what’s that thing?” she wondered, coming closer. The doll resembled those of Russian make, the kinds that one placed inside another, but this one didn’t seem to have any lines on the sides that could be opened. She had just about picked it up to observe when she noticed a small, faint aura forming around it. “…huh?”

A second later, she felt a sharp pain in her chest, as the doll suddenly slammed itself against her body, dragging her own hand along. “T-the hell?!” she let out, falling to her knees for a moment. “What’s with this… stupid doll?!”

With a sudden jerk, the Russian-style doll slipped out of her hand, before trying to slam itself on her head. Akatsuka was already trying to grab it again with her other hand, but it managed to slip away. “Toro!” The only thing that kept her from getting pounded by a full pound of ceramic at full speed was a pair of gauntlets forming up in front of her, even as the rest of Red Garland emerged from her body.

“S-so this is what it’s like to fight with this guy…!” she muttered, letting him stand in front of her while she focused on the floating doll trying to kill her. “So what the hell are you, anyway?!”

The only answer she got was a nasty laugh, one that chilled her spine from hearing it. The otherworldly nature of the laugh also made her feel like this was connected to the recent events for certain. “Don’t tell me… you’re a Stand too, aren’t you?”

The doll was still able to float in its own way, and she could almost believe that it nodded in a very condescending way. “Thought so… don’t you act smart with me, you piece of junk!” she declared, having Red Garland throw it at the ground to smash it.

Although there was a very satisfying ‘crunch’ noise from the impact, however, she was displeased to see that her enemy was only slightly cracked, and did not seem to be seriously damaged. And of course, now that it was free, the puppet had decided to keep its distance from now, judging her.

Akatsuka considered her situation. Running away was one thing, but the doll was able to actually fly in the air, and that meant it could come after her from any angle, including ones she wasn’t aware of. Then, there was the fact that if one doll could move on its own, probably due to a Stand, so could others. It wasn’t a good idea to just dismiss that as a one-off unless she found the user… if, indeed, there was one.

At least this way, she had a little more understanding on how Red Garland worked. There wasn’t an issue with her using her hands to control his hands; he was more like an extension of her body, with general contact but she didn’t even need to think that much to govern his actions. Just a casual ‘punch it’ worked, rather than focusing on how she wanted the punch.

However, it not being necessary didn’t mean it didn’t sound useful.

“Get it!” she declared, moving forward along with the Stand, shortening the distance between them and the puppet. She focused on how she wanted the punch to go, visualizing it in her mind.

Red Garland’s fist flew faster than before, barely missing a dead-on strike; however, the impact was enough to make it break the doll’s front somewhat. Her instinctive drive to defeat the enemy meant the second fist came just as she thought of it, forcing it to spin out unable to escape.

Even she couldn’t miss this chance.

Toro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro!” her Stand grunted as it punched repeatedly, so fast she could barely see the fists, the doll breaking apart from the impact. A slight grin formed on her lips as she realized his strength was the real deal, a power that was perhaps above any other Stand’s in terms of sheer strength.

“…you know, if that’s your real power, I think we’re going to do just fine, big guy,” she said, before noticing the smoke forming from the broken doll pieces. It burned up in seconds, disappearing like it was never there to begin with. “…and I suppose this is helpful. If another one of these shows up, I’ll know that it won’t leave a mark.”

As she turned around, however, she saw the crack on the pavement. “…though I have to learn to not leave marks myself, I guess.”

The walk to school gave Akatsuka enough time to experiment with her Stand, primarily the part about keeping it active. She was glad to see nobody seemed to notice it, even if she revealed a finger or two at a time, though she refused to show off the warrior as a whole unless she was sure nobody was looking. Thankfully, he seemed to be a moron, unable to speak outside those weird grunts and only when it punched something.

At one time, when she passed by a clear window with him out, she realized an aura of energy had formed around her. For a moment she almost thought the reflection was showing her Stand, but when she noticed that another person was looking at the window and completely ignoring her, she realized that even this aura was invisible to normal people. Perhaps it was only something Stand users could see or notice.

Red Garland itself seemed to be rather limited, though. She couldn’t get it to do more than stand before her, definitely not far enough to take more than a couple steps ahead or behind her, and his arms were only able to reach as much as her own. On one hand, this was disappointing, since all she seemed able to do with him was punching.

On the other hand, though, he punched very well. The doll from before was a good example, as he was able to literally punch it apart faster than she could blink, the speed and strength clearly on display. She wasn’t sure how physical he was, but it was easy to assume that if something actually hit her Stand, it would take the blow better than she would.

One thing, however, did nag at her nonetheless.

She was just one block away from school when she saw a group of punks from another school. She had heard of them before; the kind of jerks who went around making trouble with other schools, probably trying to ‘take them over’ or whatever. She hadn’t taken those rumors too seriously, but considering they were clearly picking on someone from her school, as she saw it, it was worth taking into consideration.

She looked at them for a moment, frowning. She could sort of see auras similar to her own, if different, and not simply in tone. It was a strange, black-like color that seemed very weak, and gave her an unpleasant shiver.

“Hey, excuse me,” Akatsuka interrupted them, the red-haired girl crossing her arms. “What are you guys doing?”

The punks didn’t quite respond to her, simply turning to look at her. It was strange to see their glossy, blank eyes, like they weren’t all there. They didn’t even seem to be talking, they were just standing around, one of them still holding her schoolmate.

“Thought so.” She adjusted her hair a little, before pointing at them. “I don’t care what’s going on your heads, but drop him. I want to try something out.”

One of the thugs started to run towards her, just letting out a random battle cry of some sort. Before he could even try to swing at her, however, Akatsuka was ready, letting Red Garland’s fist intercept him in the gut.

Compared to before, the punch was weak, not even enough to knock him out. Her control over it seemed to be good, as she wanted to get the punks to advance on her as a whole, not just one of them.

“Oh, seems like your friend just slipped,” she said, looking at the others. “Why don’t you come over and help him, morons?”

That seemed to get to them, as they started to come at her like a group. Akatsuka refused to let her worries show on her face, as her red aura flared up, a second before the armored warrior emerged before her.

TORO!” he yelled, when the first punch landed. This was followed by a series of rapid-fired punches at full speed, which she tried to aim at as many of the punks as possible. “Toro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro!” The last few punches were enough to send each one flying, at which point Red Garland let out his final battle cry. “STRONZO! {SON OF A-}”

Akatsuka stared at the scene in awe, a second before realizing she was out of breath. Somehow, the amount of focus she had spent on that series of punches was enough to tire her out, and she needed a little time to recover.

Thankfully, as violent as she had been, she had managed to remain careful, and the punks were still alive and breathing. She could tell that just from looking, no need for a detailed exam. She also couldn’t see the black aura around them anymore, though she wasn’t sure at what point it faded away.

What did bother her, though, was that she had been trying to pay as close attention to where Red Garland was punching. His reach was good, enough that she didn’t have to worry about missing any of them due to distance, and she figured that as long as she wasn’t completely surrounded she could at least hit an entire group if she went all out.

But she had counted the blows that hit, better than she had the first time against the doll. And now that she could compare them to the apparent injuries, the ruffled clothes, and everything, it bothered her to realize that he had, in fact, missed more than half of the punches he had thrown. Attempts to punch at the center of their bodies dead-on ended up aimed a little far away, while those punches that were closer to their arms or belly would outright miss them entirely.

Perhaps she could compensate for it properly, but as she forced Red Garland to look at her, she realized that his eyes weren’t exactly clear, but somewhat dull in fact. This meant that she would have to be careful with how she fought, if she didn’t want to keep missing that much.

Her thoughts were broken by the realization that her schoolmate was stirring now. “Hey, brat!” she said, taking note of his short height. “Those punks were bothering you just now, weren’t they?”

“Y-yeah…” he muttered, shaking his head in the process. He didn’t seem to expect her to offer a hand, not that she bothered to do it. “I heard there’s a lot of friction between our school and theirs, but this is ridiculous… I don’t even know why they started picking on me, they said nothing.”

“Thought so. Well, that’s these thugs for you. They don’t care much what others think, they just hurt people.” She sniffed a little, before going back on her path. “Anyway, I have to go. See you some other time, I guess.”

“Uh… see you?” he said, uncertain. “Just in case, what’s your name?”

“Name?” She glanced towards him, unexpectedly. “Just call me Akatsuka, brat.”

“O-okay… jeez, sorry to bother.” With those words, he adjusted his own clothes, before heading towards the school with her.

…

At first glance, nothing seemed to be out of place when they arrived at the school grounds. Akatsuka didn’t even notice the short boy she had helped before run off, probably headed to his own classes. However, she still felt that unusual chill in her spine, an odd feeling that something was off. It was stronger than when she encountered the doll and the thugs from before.

She tried to ignore it up until the moment when she heard a melody start playing in her classroom during the first class, as if due to the PA system; however, the strange thing was that, at first glance, nobody seemed to be listening to it. The melody seemed to be like a lullaby, somehow.

The chill increased when she saw one of the students slip over their desk, face meeting the desk. She could’ve still considered that a completely unrelated event, if it wasn’t for two other students falling asleep as well.

“What the sh-” she let out, moments before feeling her eyes start to lower, a strange sleepy sensation flowing into her. “C-crap-!” With that gasp, her body fell limp on the desk, similar to the other students. Soon enough, everyone in class was asleep, even the teacher.

The door opened quietly for a moment, before being closed just as quietly.

“Mmm-hmm, interesting!” said a blonde girl, as she walked towards the teacher’s desk. “Now look at them sleep! I should’ve done this ages ago if I knew it would be this easy!”

The girl took the teacher’s bag, opening it so she could look inside. “Now, let’s see, where’s the answers to our next exam…”

“Hey!” a sharp voice suddenly spoke, much to her surprise. The girl looked towards it, her eyes widening as she saw Akatsuka was getting up. “What do you think you’re doing, bitch?”

“Hm. So you woke up already. Interesting…” the blonde said, placing the bag down. “I thought my lullaby was good enough to knock you out.”

“So that was you, wasn’t it.” Akatsuka growled, stifling her emotions. She couldn’t show her full aggression yet. “You made a song that makes people sleep?”

“That’s the idea!” she replied, grinning. “I don’t really wanna get in trouble, you know? So I thought, if everyone’s asleep or otherwise unaware, I can get away with all sorts of things!” She then raised an eyebrow. “So, how did you wake up, redhead?”

“That’s for me to know and you to find out…” she growled, before running towards her. “After I’m done cleaning your clock, blondie!”

She barely had time to see the aura form around the girl, a greenish tone of some sort, before a sharp noise cut through the air. Almost immediately after, Akatsuka fell to her knees, gasping for air.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I don’t think you’ll be cleaning anything right now,” the blonde said, with a nasty smirk on her face, “unless you mean you’ll be using your face on the ground!”

The lullaby music started again, making her shoulders feel heavy and her eyelids start to close. Biting a lip, Akatsuka advanced nonetheless, getting off the ground and using all her strength to keep on going. Another sharp noise came, stopping the lullaby for long enough that Akatsuka could feel awake again, but to little avail as she felt another strike out of nowhere, right on her face.

“You know, you should be thanking me. I mean, with this workout we’re doing, I’m sure I can fix that nose of yours back into shape,” the blonde said, mocking her.

“Very funny...” Akatsuka muttered, rubbing her lips. “Who are you, bitch? And where did you get that power?”

“Heh. Otomine’s my name, redhead. And my power… well, that’s a secret. Not that you can tell what I’m doing, right?” The blonde let her aura build up again, the music about to begin. “Not that you’ll remember much after I knock you out too and-”

A sharp pain on her throat made her stop talking, the girl gagging for a moment as the sensation became clear; something had just struck her at high velocity. A look down, and she saw a small piece of rubber that had been taken out of some table, very fast.

“Damn it, I was aiming for her skull…” Akatsuka couldn’t help but admit, as she noticed Otomine was definitely not knocked out by that. “Still, since your little number is done for now… how about we get a reality check, huh?”

Toro!” Red Garland yelled as he was fully manifested, hands moving towards the blonde’s arms.

Otomine managed to move back, but her body was stuck in place shortly after, as the red warrior’s grip tightened around something. “D-damn it! Let me go, Reddy!”

“Oh, so you can see him?” Akatsuka asked, raising an eyebrow; Otomine’s expression changed into one of shock. “Seems to me like we’ve both got the same type of ‘power’ then.”

“What do you care?!” the blonde asked, seconds before Red Garland managed to pull something out.

If Otomine was just a normal high school student like Akatsuka, with a slightly brown type of natural blonde hair and dressed in the same uniform as her, then the creature Red Garland was currently holding was not quite like him. It was some strange, slim pale man, much thinner and less bulky, with thick and wild green spiked hair and clad in an unusual type of armor. Some of its skin was actually green properly as well, on the areas of its elbows and forearms, and its right eye was covered with a strange patch of some sort.

Most unusual, however, was that it held a guitar; an electric one by all means, but in the same colors as its body and, most importantly, completely disconnected from any devices that it could plug into. There wasn’t even any cables sticking out, in fact.

“Thought so. You’ve got a Stand too, don’t you?” Akatsuka asked her. “No wonder I’ve been hearing this stupid song, that’s your power!”

“I’ll have you know that my power is not stupid songs!” Otomine retorted, glaring at the large red Stand in front of her. “What about you? You’ve got a stupid gorilla!”

“What did you say about my Red Garland?!”

The argument would’ve proceeded, but the door to the classroom opened at that moment.

“What’s with the yelling?” a teacher from the room next door asked, as he walked in. That question was enough to break their concentration for one moment. Otomine reacted faster to that, managing to pull away from Red Garland’s grip just enough that she could move, her Stand floating along her as well.

“Just passing by!” she said, her Stand quickly playing the start of the lullaby right in front of the teacher, who fell unconscious from the direct exposure. Akatsuka managed to cover her ears in time, but that meant she couldn’t follow her out of the room until after the blonde managed to get a good lead.

“Damn it…” she growled, running after the distant form. “Is she one of those assassins Steel warned me of? I know she was just fiddling with the teacher’s bag, but… that could just be a cover!”

The chase went up the stairs to a higher floor, with the melody playing along. On one hand, Akatsuka disliked hearing it more and more, since she was worried about falling asleep or worse. On the other hand, however, hearing it still meant she could follow Otomine wherever she was going to.

“Well, it doesn’t matter,” she decided. “Whether you’re just some punk messing with me or one of DIO’s assassins, I’m not going to lose to you!”

Things were not going too well for Akatsuka so far.

It was hard to tell how much of the Stand’s melody was affecting her, considering it had not stopped since the girl started running. It didn’t help that she was intent on getting to the other end of the school for every floor she went to, which she only realized was a plausible result once they were near the last staircase available. She did worry about the blonde getting away once she got out of her sight, but she had managed to keep up nonetheless.

The sudden spill of unconscious students and teachers, she hoped, would only be seen as a change in pressure rather than a result of their current argument, but either way she hated how much of a mess things were turning into, especially when the adrenaline pumping her on seemed to be almost over.

There was only one place to go to, however, and she had a very good guess as to what that’d entail.

“Hold it right there!” Akatsuka declared, as soon as she arrived on the rooftop. True to her guess, Otomine was there, currently facing her without her Stand. “Are you done running yet, bitch?”

“Heh, you’ve got good lungs to go with those legs. You’re not even winded even after hearing so much of my music, are you?” the blonde asked. The distance between the two of them was sufficient that Akatsuka would have to cross the entire place if she wanted to use Red Garland, and unfortunately there were no really good objects she could throw nearby.

Sure, maybe she could break some of the wall around the staircase, but that was going too far.

“Well, like I said… that’s for me to know and you to find out. You made the wrong choice, coming all the way up here… there’s no way you can get down from this high and not get hurt!”

“That may be true…” Otomine couldn’t help but smirk nonetheless, as her aura started to form. “However, what have I done wrong so far?”

“You mean, besides putting an entire classroom to sleep, trying to steal exam answers, and then knocking who knows how many others out as you run away?” Akatsuka growled, her own aura taking shape as well. “Give me a break! You’re just some lousy bimbo with power going up to your head!”

“Yeah, like you’re one to talk! Your ‘gorilla’ nearly broke my arm before! And don’t think I don’t know about you, either!” That made the red-and-black-haired girl’s eyes widen. “Everyone talks about you. You’ve picked enough fights in the playground and middle school, you’re basically a local terror! Nobody wants you around, not even the other gangs, because everyone’s sure you’re going to snap and hurt anyone who gets in your way!”

“So is that all you have to say?” Akatsuka had a serious scowl now, and Otomine’s smirk grew.

“Interesting. I knew listening to the local gossip was worth it.” The blonde’s aura seemed to move wind now, as a melody started to play. “If nothing else, I’m sure that knocking you down a peg’s going to give me a good rep! Everyone already hates you, after all!”

Akatsuka clenched her teeth, starting to advance, but Otomine’s Stand emerged faster, the hands already at work at turning that lullaby into something much nastier.

“How about we start this jam by skipping straight to the main number?” she asked, the melody he played turning into a violent rock solo. “Let’s see how you can handle my Sonic Youth!”

A full burst of wind struck Akatsuka right then and there, throwing her against the wall. She had to yell as she felt her back hit rock, pain coursing from the impact.

“Hehehe, don’t think you can get close again. You were lucky I was just trying to put you to sleep, instead of hurting you,” Otomine chuckled, the wind pressure strong enough to keep Akatsuka from moving for a moment, before the solo shifted into a softer tempo. At that point, the wind faded away, letting her fall to her front. “Don’t think you’ll manage to get close to me again, though.”

“Bitch…” Akatsuka slammed a fist against the ground, stopping herself from falling, before running ahead. Red Garland was out as well, his fist having helped her push off properly. “Don’t think you can tell me what to do!”

“You’ve got a thing for pain, too? Interesting...” Sonic Youth’s fingers were mashing on the guitar as fast as they could again, and Akatsuka felt the impact of the wind again; even Red Garland couldn’t proceed on from that. “Too bad for you, but you’re going down!”

“Like hell I am!” she snapped, her Stand finally recovering enough to start punching the air with a series of ‘To-ro-ro-ro-ro’s. “Just because your Stand can move some wind doesn’t mean shit!”

“Oh, that’s not all that my Sonic Youth can do...” Otomine chuckled, before changing her attack into a faster rock tune again. This time, however, Akatsuka realized the melody had changed to something else.

And then pain coursed through her hands.

“W-what?!” she let out, as she realized there were cuts forming on the back of her knuckles, not enough to tear the fingers apart but enough to make her spill blood. “M-my hands! What did you do?!”

“Interesting… now this one, I wasn’t so sure until now,” Otomine said, looking a little disgusted but not enough to turn away just yet. “But considering how your gorilla hurt my arms by holding Sonic Youth, I thought the same might happen to you as well.”

“S-so you’re saying that… our Stands, hurting each other… will actually hurt us as well?!” Akatsuka’s eyes widened as the blood started to spill out further, the feeling of the air against the open cuts being too unnerving in its suddenness.

“Seems like it. But hey, don’t worry! After I knock you out, I’ll make sure to drop you off at the infirmary,” Otomine offered, before giving her a sly glance. “I mean, sure, that’s after I get a look at those answers and maybe, if it just so happens that your bloody hands touched them, why, maybe they’ll be so sure that you’re the one who stole it! And it’s not like you can actually prove I’ve got a Stand without showing one yourself, can you?”

“You little… you little bitch…!” Akatsuka snarled, even as the lullaby started. Sonic Youth had actually moved closer to her, playing the melody louder and with more strength than ever before, and she tried to cover her ears to stop it.

“Don’t bother trying to stop it,” Otomine said, watching as she pressed as hard as she could. “I did some tests before today. You’d have to be completely deaf to avoid hearing Sonic Youth; even Beethoven would be affected thanks to his sensitive ear. And his music is going straight into your brain now!”

Eventually, Akatsuka couldn’t resist the pressure, dropping to the floor indeed. Red Garland itself had faded into her in the process, leaving her defenseless. The music kept playing for a little longer, even as Otomine approached her.

“Interesting. Seems like she’s out at last. Quite a pain she was, wouldn’t you say?” She glanced at her Stand, but the lack of reaction didn’t bother her, and she simply headed ahead. “Well, anyway. Now all we gotta do is knock everyone else in the school and then take her to the infirmary, and leave a note for the nurse...”

Upon kneeling to pick Akatsuka, however, she realized something was off. The girl’s left hand was open flat, like she expected, but her right hand was still clenched tightly. She moved her hand towards it, trying to avoid touching the blood, only to feel something wet as her left hand moved underneath the palm. “Wh-”

The fist flew up, hitting her on the cheek; not enough to break her bones, but it was enough to stun her for a moment. Otomine managed to look at it just enough to see that it was turning up, bending on to reveal a bloody cut right within the palm.

A cut made by what remained of a pencil head.

“Y-you… shoved a pencil into your own hand?!” she managed to let out, once she took hold of that hand.

“Yeah… I’ve got a rather sensitive sleep. Even the slightest injury can keep me awake,” Akatsuka answered, opening her eyes. “I admit it, I’m impressed… your song managed to numb my fingers just enough that they ain’t hurting anymore.”

“But then… how...”

“Oh, you can thank my ‘gorilla’ for that.” Otomine’s eyes widened once she realized what that meant. “The last thing he did was ram it hard enough to hurt… and well, I’m glad for that. Since now, you’ve got your hands busy, don’t you agree?”

The blonde’s reaction time was notable; she had only just heard the question, and she already called to her Stand. “SONIC YOU-

“TORO!” Red Garland yelled, punching hard enough to shut her up. Otomine couldn’t even blink as she realized she had actually left her Stand’s reach as she took the lead, giving Akatsuka an unexpected opening. Between the red-and-black-haired girl’s sudden grip and her Stand’s fists, there was no way she could escape in time.

“Thought so. You’re just a bimbo who got a little too high and mighty for my taste,” Akatsuka said, concentrating as hard as she could on her next action. “Time for a reality check, bitch!”

“To-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro!” Red Garland punctuated with every punch he threw, the massive quantity being sufficient to overcome the amount of near or outright misses. By the time he finished, Otomine’s entire body had gone limp, falling to the ground like she was made of gelatin.

Akatsuka stood up, letting go of her arms at that point. Finally, she felt comfortable in taking a breather. “Thanks for the help, big guy,” she said, smiling a little. “Guess we’re going to the infirmary now. Just help me carry her up.”

Red Garland said nothing, but as she raised the blonde over her own shoulder to drag her back, Akatsuka used the Stand to adjust the grip better. “Sheesh, you’re so heavy. If I wasn’t trying to keep my Stand hidden, I’d just let him drag you there.”

Going downstairs was a little easier than expected. Despite knocking out the musician, the effects of the music didn’t seem to have immediately faded away and there were still unconscious figures lying around.

‘Now how will I explain this…?’ she thought to herself. An entire school period where everyone had a pressure faint? I mean, that’s probably the best one, but it doesn’t explain her. Ugh, if she hadn’t pissed me off like that, I wouldn’t have had to beat her up this hard.’

Indeed, while she didn’t seem to have experienced lethal trauma, Otomine had enough bruises to resemble a lumpy potato and a lip fat enough you could rest a pencil without it falling at this point. Between that and Akatsuka’s injured hands, that were still bleeding a little, it was hard to come up with a good justification.

“Guess I’ll just bite a suspension,” she muttered, even as she reached the last floor. A short walk to the infirmary later, she was relieved to see nobody was around, even the nurse. Probably called away to do something about the other unconscious students.

After dumping her on a bed, Akatsuka took the time to wash her hands, remembering that was probably the best thing to do for the bleeding. Unfortunately, not only did it sting to expose her wounds to the running water, but the feeling on her hands was worse than before, and the blood didn’t quite stop.

“Great… this is going to leave so much scarring, I’m gonna need to wear gloves,” she muttered to herself. Akatsuka was actually aware of the other issues, such as possible nerve damage, but she refused to think about it right now. Her biggest concern was, still, trying to explain how any of this happened, without bringing up Stands.

Then she turned around and realized that someone else was in the room with her.

“W-whoa!?” she let out, seeing a male student had come in. He didn’t seem like he stood out too much, besides the fact that his red hair was light enough, it almost seemed pink. “Who the hell are you?”

Hearing her voice took the guy aback, and he turned to face her. “O-oh… sorry, I didn’t hear you,” he said, brushing some of that hair away. “My name is Isaji. I came here to talk to the nurse, that’s all.”

“Well, she’s not around,” Akatsuka said, trying to keep her hands out of sight.

“She isn’t, huh…” the guy agreed, giving her a look. He said nothing, however, until he saw Otomine’s unconscious body. “Whoa! What happened to her?”

“She… got hurt.” Great, she was going for a lame statement already. “Considering the people I saw on the way here, I guess it was the same reason.”

“I see…” he said, coming a little closer. His lips pursed a little, before he moved his hand towards her.

The shining gleam of his aura was enough to draw her attention. “Hold it!” she said without thinking.

“Oh?” he asked, the aura fading right after. “What’s wrong?”

“N-no, it’s just…”

She hesitated long enough for Isaji to raise an eyebrow. “Just a question...” he said, facing her again, and drawing out the aura again. “Can you see this?”

For a moment, she hesitated again, before nodding. Isaji twisted his fingers to let the palm face upwards, revealing a thin, nearly transparent scalpel.

“As I thought. So, you know anything about this power?” he asked, and she frowned. Within a moment, Red Garland had emerged as well, nearly making him drop his blade. “Whoa! The hell is that?”

“Long story short: Red Garland. Longer story: if you try anything to hurt her, I’m breaking your fingers.”

Isaji couldn’t help but let out an awkward smile at that point. “Alright, alright! Calm down, miss!” he said, trying to keep his distance. “I’m just a Samaritan, that’s all. Help and be helped, you know?”

“With a scalpel? What do you expect me to think?”

“Well, I was trying to start small, unlike you.” His aura emerged fully, and a feminine-looking nurse appeared beside him, taking the scalpel in hand. She looked like a very stereotypical nurse, to be honest, having no true distinction other than her face being too close to a mask to be real. The arms, as well, had lines that made her seem more like a puppet than a person; however, considering her eyes were actual capable of blinking, she didn’t seem to be any less ‘alive’ than Red Garland or Sonic Youth had been. “As I thought, our powers are similar but different.”

“Sure. I’m assuming your little nurse play toy is fully poseable, too?” Akatsuka mocked him. “What else can she do? Dress like a maid and clean the house? Maybe put on some swimming clothes?”

“You laugh, but her shape is her power. In that sense, I suppose it’s like yours.” In the Stand’s hands, several medical tools appeared. “I may not know enough about medicine, but I know that this Stand can actually treat people.”

“Oh really?” Akatsuka raised an eyebrow. “Can you prove it?”

“Well, given that girl’s state… I thought that would be a good idea,” Isaji admitted, trying to go ahead.

“…no, don’t start with her,” she said, stopping him with those words. “If you’re gonna prove it… then here.”

Upon seeing her hands, his eyes widened. “Whoa! Your hands-what happened?”

“It’s irrelevant. You’ve got these powers? Then show me what you can do.” ‘And this way, I’ll know you’re not a bad person either.’

“Alright.” After stopping by her, Isaji’s Stand moved closer, scanning her hands. For a moment, she thought she saw marks on the eyes. Almost as soon as the observation ended, his eyes widened. “Anesthetic.”

The needle pierced her arm faster than she could react, missing her most crucial veins and arteries before injecting a substance that seemed to be exactly as he said, numbing her nerves enough to make the pain fade completely.

“Cotton. Pincer. Gel.” With each sentence, something new came, which the Stand put to use as swiftly as possible between his chosen sentences. The cotton and pincer were used to clean the injuries and remove the piece of graphite that was stuck, which was followed with a cool, strange gel that felt awfully relieving despite her hand being numb. “Bandages. Anti-anesthetic.”

Her fingers were wrapped carefully, before the needle pierced her again, on the exact same spot as before. Akatsuka grimaced at the realization, even more as whatever was injected actually started to neutralize the anesthetic, giving her hand feeling again.

The second arm’s procedure went just the same as the first one, and Akatsuka was outright shocked to realize the entire operation had lasted less than a minute. “H… how did you…?”

“I’ve been looking into medical books all my life. My uncle’s a doctor, you see,” Isaji explained, as his nurse Stand bowed gently. “So I guess I always wanted to help save lives. I may not know everything, but at least I know enough to also know what my real limitations are… and ironically, stuff like this gel is something that just doesn’t exist, but that I’ve been able to use to help.” The Stand took out a flask of it again, which he pressed his own fingers into. “It can heal without scarring, believe me.”

“I see…” Akatsuka stared at him a little longer, still not sure if she should trust him. However, all the same, she could no longer feel that same chill on her spine from before, ever since she had defeated Otomine. “…fine. If you can help her, I won’t stop you. But if you hurt her at all-”

“Understood.” He simply nodded, before walking towards the unconscious blonde. “…well, whoever beat her up sure did a number on her. I’m surprised so many of her vital organs were missed, actually.” Akatsuka struggled not to roll her eyes in response. “Still, I think I can help her recover without looking like a crushed pineapple for the rest of her life.”

“Go right ahead.”

The series of orders Isaji gave his Stand this time was much more extensive than before, but Akatsuka was surprised to see how well the nurse could work, managing to avoid damaging her clothes and also keeping him from sneaking a peek at anything more personal. It actually surprised her to see someone so young also manage to be so professional about it, considering she had seen most of her classmates of the same age being nothing but total dorks.

Eventually, he stepped back. “There we go, good as new,” he said, recalling his Stand. “She should be waking up in a short period. The anti-anesthetic takes its time to finish in the dose I used.”

“I see… well, if that’s all you had to do, then now might be a good time to scram,” Akatsuka said, pointing at the exit. “Who knows what idea she’s going to have, if she sees some guy standing over her like that.”

Although he seemed to be unhappy about it, Isaji relented and headed out, a little time before Otomine started to stir. “Ugh… where am I…?”

“The infirmary,” Akatsuka’s voice was enough to get her to wake up fully, though the pain still in her body made it difficult to stand up. “Behave, and you won’t need another reason to be here.”

“Oh, of course. It had to be you.” Otomine shoved her head back against her pillow. “Let me guess, you want something. People like you always do.”

“People like me just want to be left alone, blondie. You’re the one who started by messing with me.” Akatsuka frowned, giving her surroundings a quick look. “Was that really all you were planning on?”

“Huh?”

“Your little power trip. Was any of that an excuse to just target me?” she emphasized, serious. “Or does it have anything to do with that psycho doll from before?”

“What are you talking about…?” Otomine glared at her. “You’re the first Stand user I’ve seen in my life!”

“Well, don’t expect that to last. By my count, you’re the third or fourth… even if you’re the first one I ever fought.”

“What, you mean I’m some kind of ‘newbie opponent’ or something?” The blonde closed her eyes hard and clenched her teeth and fists alike. “Great, I had to run right into someone who knew what they were doing.”

“Don’t treat it like a joke. You’re lucky you haven’t had to deal with Stands who tried to kill you before.” Otomine just glared at her. “I wasn’t trying to kill you.”

“Ugh, fine. I get it.” Blowing a little hair off her face, she looked up. “…I was just going to do a little ‘prep’ for the test. Nothing else.”

“Really?”

“Cross my heart, swear to die.”

Akatsuka was still rather uncertain, but considering how much had happened… “Fine. Where did you get your Stand?”

“Get it?” Otomine blinked. “I just woke up with it.”

“You just woke up, and knew how to use it?” The red-and-black-haired girl frowned. “How am I supposed to believe that?”

“Well, fine. I admit it was weird to feel my guitar on hand when I woke up, only to see it was resting on its usual place, and the fact that when I played my usual track on it my dog fell unconscious was weird, but who cares how I got it?” the blonde explained, frowning as well. “It’s my power! What’s wrong with having a little fun with it?”

“Well, you better change your tune, blondie. If I find out you’re pulling that trick again, you bet I won’t be so forgiving.”

“Whatever.” Otomine waved a hand dismissively. “If what you’re saying is true, there’s probably more Stand users around. I don’t think I’m going to test my luck again if they’re so prone to fighting to the death.”

“…that’s right.” Akatsuka decided not to bring up Isaji just yet. “Anyway, since you’re clearly not going to die, I’m going back to class.”

And so she did, leaving Otomine to her thoughts.

…

The rest of the morning passed by rather well, all things considered. Her class had been still asleep by the time she got there, surprisingly, so her teacher had to rush to the next period as the bell rang. Nobody was really able to explain what had happened, and the most anyone could mention was the idea of a sudden shift in pressure that knocked everyone out.

Of course, Akatsuka had to pretend to be asleep as well and hope nobody gossiped about her chasing anyone else, but it was relieving to not deal with any of that crap.

Peace was broken at around lunch time, however. “Hey, Red!” a friendly voice came from the doorway. It was Otomine. “Wanna hang out?”

The red-and-black-haired girl scoffed. “What do you want?”

“Aww, don’t be like that!” the blonde said, coming closer. “I just figure we might as well start hanging out together! What’s wrong with a little inter-class friendship?”

Akatsuka didn’t quite bite it, but given the looks she was getting from the other students, she figured dealing with their questions would be annoying either way. Not to mention Otomine had that disgusting ability to make herself look cute and friendly.

“Fine, whatever. I guess it’s better than going hungry,” she muttered, getting up. “Not like I have a choice sometimes.”

“That’s the spirit!” Otomine said, even as the two girls left. “So, where are we going?”

“Weren’t you the one who just asked me to come?” Akatsuka asked, raising an eyebrow. The blonde laughed a little to herself. “Please tell me you’re being serious.”

“Of course, of course! I just wanted to know if you’ve got anywhere you usually go to for lunch, that’s all!” she said, before glancing at her. “Besides, best to discuss the whole ‘Stand’ thing in private, no?”

“…thought so,” the red-and-black-haired girl said, letting out a sigh. “Fine. We’re going to that one tree on the back of the school.”

“The one where couples go to?” Otomine blinked. “Didn’t think you for a romantic.”

“The one they say grew over a dead body, moron.”

Ignoring her disgusted squeals, Akatsuka led the way nonetheless. Given how things had gone, she figured it was better to talk about that subject anyway, and free food was free food.

The aforementioned tree was said to be part of the school’s seven mysteries, very much as Akatsuka had described it; a dead body was buried in the land before it became school property, and a tree had grown over it, which accounted for its strange, misshapen bark and the occasional ‘face’ it seemed to make on certain areas. Most people hated to get close to it, but it was such an old tree that it was basically a local monument and thus, cutting it down was out of the question.

In a way, it made for the perfect place to discuss things that you didn’t want heard, since only the brave would even try going there.

“So, you wanted to talk,” Akatsuka began, once they arrived. “Go ahead then.”

“You said you encountered other Stands before. How dangerous are they?”

“Well…” That was unexpected enough; she hadn’t thought Otomine to be this straightforward. “The ones I found weren’t that nasty, I guess. One of them took the shape of a puppet, one of those Russian things that you open up, you know? It’s solid enough to hurt, but not that strong. If you see any random dolls lying around, just ignore them or avoid them, I guess.” She thought back to the incident with the thugs. “I’m not too sure, but I think someone else might have some kind of ability to take over people, but they weren’t too strong. And then, of course, there was you and your music Stand.”

“Not just music!” Almost as a reaction, Sonic Youth emerged, already swinging his pick. “I can use the vibrations to make the air move, too! How do you think I was throwing you around when we fought?”

Akatsuka frowned. Straightforward and blunt like that? Hopefully not all the time, or she might have to hate her. “Whatever you say. Anyway, that’s all I’ve seen myself. There might be other Stand users around, but I wouldn’t know how dangerous they are until I fight them.”

“Interesting.” Otomine managed to smirk after that. “Well, I don’t really plan on picking any more fights with Stand users without thinking. I mean, it was bad enough to pick one with you.”

Akatsuka figured that was enough of an answer. “So, what kind of music can you play, anyway?”

“Me, or Sonic Youth?” the blonde asked, only to be glared at. “Well, why don’t you show her, pal?”

Without a sound, the Stand took on a more standard rocking stance, playing the familiar rock tune; this time, however, no wind actually moved, outside the immediate vibrations.

“Isn’t it good?” Otomine asked, clearly enjoying the song; she even had taken to moving with the beat. The most impressive thing, in a way, was that somehow the Stand managed to replicate the effects of two guitars at once, one of which was clearly a bass theme; in fact, when the time came to perform such a solo, it was being performed almost perfectly – well, about as perfectly as someone who was playing bass on a normal-looking guitar could make it seem. “I also can play any of the Top 20, actually!”

“You can actually mimic them?” Akatsuka asked, surprised, only to see her wag her finger.

“I don’t ‘mimic’ them. I admit it’s a bit easier thanks to my Stand’s unusual ‘understanding’, but if I hear a song, I can understand the way it’s supposed to go. Since the Top 20 play regularly for a while, it’s easy to learn them!” She recalled Sonic Youth, leaving only the guitar and hands out; as she moved, they reacted just like her own, letting her manipulate the guitar at will. “Of course, I suppose it’s harder to do so on my own guitar, and I don’t like to rely on my Stand’s much for that. I can tell already his skill is much better than mine for it.”

“I see…” Akatsuka considered, just before Otomine blinked.

“Hey, who’s that?” she said, looking at the distance. When Akatsuka turned to see it, she realized there was a cat running on the school grounds.

“Oh, that’s some dimwit,” she said, once she saw the person chasing after it, coming right after the curve. “For whatever reason, he’s brought his cat to school a few times now. I can’t understand why; the thing’s never obedient.”

“I see…” the blonde commented, giving him a look. “I guess he does look like a dimwit: short, fat… that’s not very polite, though.”

Akatsuka just rolled her eyes, the cat running near them. A moment later, another student showed up, trying to talk to him. It wasn’t possible to hear what they were talking about, from that distance.

“What about him, then?” Otomine added, indicating the other newcomer. The only remarkable thing about him, from that distance, was that he was fatter than most of the other students.

“Never saw him before.” Just saying that was enough for Akatsuka to dismiss him, as she was about to look away. “Come on, let’s get some fo-”

“The hell!?”

Otomine’s sudden outburst was enough to make her turn back again, eyes growing wider. A white shape had dashed forward towards them, moving faster than expected. It dove past them, diving towards the cat, and its fingers latched onto its head before they could react.

There was a slightly odd sound, like that of an electric current, but they saw no signs of injuries. The white shape floated over the cat for a little longer, before letting go of its head.

Then, all of a sudden, the cat stopped running. It stood perfectly still, before turning around and moving on the opposite direction.

“…what the…?”

“Interesting…”

Their mutually opposite responses made them look at each other, before nodding. There was yet another Stand user in the school grounds.

“Let’s go have a chat with that fatty,” Akatsuka decided, as they watched the Stand move back, seemingly unaware.

Behind them, the tree branches shook a little, as a figure roughly similar to Otomine stared at them hidden within the tree. “Hyuk-hyuk-hyuk…" she whispered, in a distinctive voice.
