I like the new kid, he's very clearly NOT a negi clone. I have to wonder if he's going to only do as much combat as he has to rather than regarding it as a first option. It'll clearly be a part of the paradigm of the manga, but in general nothing that the protagonist wants REQUIRES him to be a combat monster... well besides the fact that one of the people he cares most about has a massive bounty on her head.

I expect the character is something weird anyway, maybe a shikigami? If s/he were a bog-standard human swordsman then I doubt that Eva would have gone straight for the impalement, that's a bit more vicious than we've seen her be.

One that is willing to help the male protagonist take the towel from an older and well built female....that makes her a keeper.

If this gender-trolling keeps up it's going to become a brick joke real fast. Then again... Akamatsu tends to find a way to pull these things off. Now I'm really curious the direction of this story. I feel like the more I know the more questions I have. It's solid.

Well, Eva did say that Kuromaru's "type" of immortality is bodily modifications, so whether or not she/he considers her/himself a girl/boy would be much more indicative of her/his gender than the current state of her/his body. Notwithstanding that in the future she/he might as well learn how to modify her/his body at will, of course, which will muddy things up even more.
