This year's 38th issue of Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine is previewing the new manga series UQ Holder! by Ken Akamatsu (Love Hina, Negima! Magister Negi Magi) on Wednesday. The "near-future battle fantasy" series will debut in the following issue on August 28 with an 82-page chapter and a color opening page.

In the decade since the world became aware of the existence of magic, the world has undergone massive upheaval. However, a boy named Tōta lives in seclusion in a rural town far removed from these changes. His ordinary life is highlighted by his magic-using female teacher and his supportive friends. When his tranquil daily life is disrupted, he embarks on a unique adventure.
Totally not a Negima sequel.

So, Tota is Negi's Son?

Doubtful, as it seems to be set within the first 10 years after Negi began his plan of revealing the existence of magic. Still seems promising. Just an adventure series.

So by the end, knowing Akamatsu, Tota (without realizing it of course) will have a girlfriend in ever town.

Seems like a sequel to negima/love hina yet again, with another new lead. Can't wait to see what crosses over this time.

Hopefully this time we don't get a rushed ending.

I understand Akamatsu's reasoning for the rushed ending. His publisher was about to take the series from him and run it into the ground. Better it end, and allow him to pursue new storylines within the universe while still allowing fans to have their fun, than to see the suits get their hands on it.

Exactly. Mind you, it says something about Japan that he could do that. It would be hard to get away with that with an American magazine publisher, AFAICT.

Well, Akamatsu had enough examples of where publisher turning manga into money-making whore-out leads, I'd presume. And while rushed ending strung and felt like huge cop-out at time, I'd much rather learn more about world of Negima from another related series, then let Executive Meddling ruin Akamatsuverse for me forever.

Well, that depends on your definition of a sequel.

Sequel implies that it's not only set in the same world, but has the same main characters, or it's a continuation of the storyline from the previous work, usually with the main characters from the previous work playing a very important part (if only as the teacher or parent of the sequel's MC.)

Legend of Korra can be considered a sequel to Last Airbender, because it's the continuing story of the spirit of the Avatar.

The various Star Wars movies can be considered sequels (or prequels) because they are part of the same story arch. The life of Anakin Skywalker and his family.

This is obviously set in the same world, but that could be it. There will likely be some overlap, but not enough to make it a sequel.

I'd call it a sequel if it had Negi as a main character, or his child or possibly student. Or if it involved his saving his father or mother as a central part of at least one story arch.

This seems more like a spin-off. Set in the same world, but not a continuation.

More like how Mork and Mindy and Lavern and Shirley were spin-offs of the Happy Day TV series, without being sequels.

Though, Trapper John MD and MASH might be closer. Or Tenchi GXP and Tenchi Muyo.

That being said, YES! I'd been hoping to hear about Akamatsu's latest work coming out soon!

Can't wait for it to come out, and can't wait to buy a copy of the manga.

Well, the lady in the second picture is introducing herself as
Evangeline A.K. McDowell, a 700 years old vampire.

Well... At least she seems to be no longer bound by seal at Mahora, if her use of transformative(illusion?) magic is any indication.

I always find it funny that nobody plays the averages in fiction. That is to say, that you could have two or more people in a world with the same name in completely different regions.

That's because of a rule in fiction that everything in the story has to have a purpose, a reason.

It's why so many people thought that the little kid Mark Evans mentioned in HP was a relatively of Lily and Petunia's. Though Rowlings admitted that was a mistake on her part.

Still, it's not a continuation of the Negima story.

It's closer to a spin-off. Like Trapper John MD was (technically) a spin-off of MASH even though the main character only had the same name as the MASH character, and wasn't even played by the same actor.

RE: UQ Holder!

So Negi's dead? And married Konoe? Or at least Negi's kid married Konoe's kid? Yet this is ten years after the end of Negima? So Negi was like 18 when he died, yet has a grandchild?

Something's f***ed up here.

RE: UQ Holder!

The 10 years later was probably a mistranslation. From the dates in the gravestones, it looks like Touta's parents died in 2084, meaning that the current year is 2086. If Touta is related to him, he can be only his grandson or even his great-grandson.

And I feel sad for Eva, spent 600 years alone, then finally find lots of friends... only to see them grow old and (in many cases) die one by one. Her eyes in Negima said "I'm better than you and there's nothing you can do about it", here, in some panels it felt like she was really tired, barely trying anymore. She probably hasn't killed herself because she can't.

Why do you say he married Konoe?

RE: UQ Holder!

The protag's name is Touta Konoe, and he is Negi's grandson. Also note that Touta's father's last name is also Konoe, so it might be that Negi's daughter married one of Konoe's sons. (Negi last name was still Springfield in his tombstone, so it was not probably not something like Negi married into the Konoe family and took Konoe as his last name.)

Wow, of all the characters to go with for the sequel, they chose one of my favorites.

Welcome back Eva chan, it's great to see you again. Adult eva is fine as hell.

And Negi's grandkid? Way to dodge the 'who he end up with' angle. Hopefully we learn it sooner or later.

Still, wild wide for the future I think. Can't wait to collect this one!

RE: UQ Holder!

Lots of potential foreshadowing in this one chapter alone:

1. the Eva and class 3-A page. We see groups that, I presume, are those who have passed. Note several member of the main cast appear to be missing, mainly Asuna, Chachamaru, Negi, Ku, Kotoro, Zazie, Class Rep and some others.

2. We see chachazero left behind, and yet, you can see her on the shelf in the apartment.

3. The janitor is a dead ringer for Negi. I'm thinking its ether him, or his son.

4. The kid in the hoody, as well as one of the friends, is a dead ringer for Fate series. Possibly Jeckt.

5. The long haired girl with the sword. Me thinks this may be Motoko or Tsuroko's grand daughter.

6. Me thinks the Shenmei Ryu are in this again.

7. Guy on the far left looks like Chachamaru. Possibly another android.

8. The one with the glasses at the start mirrors Yue's initial learning of magic.

Those were just the adult Class 3-A members. Not an indication she's going to show up.

As for Negi marrying Konoka, it's 'possible' though she's heavily suggested to have married Setsuna, so maybe he was just biological father to their children.

Though, if he was the parent to Touta's mother, who was Negi's wife?

Looks like Eva's changed her style.

Imagine what happens when she reveals her 'true' form to Touta.

How the Tartarus did Negi die when he's supposed to be almost as immortal as Eva?

Also, wasn't Eva planning on traveling the multiverse?

Will Eva reveal Touta's of royal blood?
