Apparently UQ Holder! gets an anime. Thoughts?

What's it like living under a rock? That shit was announced months ago.

It's a resolution, and it's way better than nothing or the end we got in Negima, but it's still very lacking.

I'm glad Chisame won, but seeing it reduced to just a picture with no context of how it came to be after everything else (same for Nagi and Eva) just feels lazy and uninspired, like Akamatsu just threw a bone while grumbling 'here, you have your ending, you happy now!?' and the battle just was lacking in excitement and telegraphed away, no suspense or twists, not even any real good action, just a collection of panels with a character posing in each until it's time for the Mage of the Beginning to take her scripted fall.

So we went from an awful finale to a merely very mediocre finale with great ideas but a complete lack of good execution to them.
He really didn't have much for choice the way he ended the series if he didn't ended then and there he would have lost the rights. Is it me or does it seem like Akamatsu may be dropping the Eve romantic subplot?
Dunno. Touta is still up on her, but hes starting to really push Kire as a partner now. Then again, what woudl an akamatsu work be without a solid love triangle going on?

Are we STILL singing the same song? He could've given the series a proper end, far less rushed and half baked than this, around the same time he started UQ Holder, since by then he'd already returned to working for the same editorial that had tried screwing him over (okay) and he still could use Negima characters as he wanted. Then, after getting that out of the way, he could've moved to the UQ timeline if he still wanted to.

And even so, if he really had to end the series quickly back then, he shouldn't have wasted so many chapters with the pointless drivel that was the Sports Festival, and instead devoting those chapters to actually tying important loose plot ends.

So in the cheat code timeline, Eva managed to get Nagi. But Eva with short hair... It's against every laws of the universe!

Episode 1 is out. For the most part sticks to the manga so faithfully there's not much to comment, but here are a few small spoiler free observations.

Touta's voice is really bad, maybe the seiyuu is far better elsewhere, but here she doesn't fit the character at all.

Why was Akira walking around the school in a swimsuit? I get she's from a swimming team, but aren't you supposing to dress up again before leaving the pool area?

Why does Negi sound so childlike? Even in the first anime, Satou Rina used to have less of a pipsqueak kiddy delivery to her Negi. Here he sounds like he's a toddler!

Overall Horie Yui seems to be the Negima cast member holding up the best, her Makie sounds just as fine now as she used to. Great job there.

The OP seems more fitting a pure harem comedy than any sort of action show. I was hoping for at least a few images of Powerful Hand, Fate's Ala Alba and Negi's team looming ominously and posing in a cool way, or something. The part with a huge pink heart downright reading aloud 'LOVE' was especially cringeworthy.

Also, by the way, UQ Holder, Vandread called, it wants its ED back.

To me Touta sounds rather fitting for his age, he sounds better when his actress goes into lower quieter range, but most of the time he is voiced as if though his voice is in that puberty phase of breaking, which is actually quite good.

I was surprised by "Happy! Ready! Go!", the girls in sports gear in the middle of a hall was very weird, as if though they thought we couldn't recognize the girls without them being in their element or something. It was nostalgic to see Makie totally happy showing off to Negi, it's nice to see her honest desire to get the little prince for herself.

The opening and ending themes are quite a bit weird considering the stuff that happens in first episode alone. Also, considering how this Opening theme was getting so many different versions in the previous show I am wondering if they might use different versions here as well? Maybe with some variations to the visuals too to top it off.

I will watch this through for Evangeline alone, the others are just extras.

Eva-chan killing murder-chan was not something I expected to see, honestly. You sometimes forget how brutal our dear undying magi can be.

And such die a sadistic yandere little sister.

Any chapter that starts off with shamelessly nude Yukihime is a great chapter. Looks like we are also finally going to get a look at Tota's origins. Highlight was so Chachazero ferociously teasing Eva-chan about her romantic feelings.

Oh.

Well, looks like Eva did some "comforting" for Negi. Complicated is right.

I wonder how this is going to affect Negi, he lost way too much in just some minutes.

Looks like pactios are back in the mix of things. They are a part of the world, so it's not surprising they are back, though it was fun not having them.

Seeing pactios return was a nice bit of nostalgia, tbh. More so than I expected.

And while it took a long time, I was glad to see Kiri rationalize Kuroumaru being weaker in her female form as mental issue rather than any physical deficiency.

Man, I'd like to do a re-read of Mahou Sensei Negima but the uploading of online scans for the official release is slow going...

They never translated the recent extra chapter about the beauty contest, did they?

Damn, Touta, you really are trying to outperform Negi in everything you do, aren't you?

Seriously, go read the newest chapter in UQ Holder.

Touta's days of outperforming anyone are counted.

The series will wrap up in... 36 chapters at best, which doesn't bode well considering it's a monthly, delivers less pages a month than Negima did in the same period, the panels are overall much bigger making for a slower storytelling, there's still so much to do, so many characters are either underdeveloped or not introduced yet at all, and the series drags tons of baggage, not only from itself but from Negima.

And frankly, if Akamatsu can't even keep the pace of a monthly without 'stressing' anymore, I don't see him doing any other major series afterwards (he's not going to get any younger.) Since UQ Holder's anime tanked and the franchise lost a lot of the steam generated by the original Negima, it's sad to think his career will most likely end with a whimper rather than a bang.

New chapter is up.

Kirie finally got the pactio with Touta.

And I'm not fully sure about this, but I don't recall seeing the Formal ritual when it came to Pactio, only the quick-and-dirty method with the kiss. Well, thanks to Kirie's whole "time stops when I kiss Touta", she earned the full 3 hour long ritual for it.

How it works? When they start the thing, both of the participants get a magical seal...somewhere in their bodies. This is random (supposedly, I'm a bit skeptical). In order to get the Pactio, these magic seals have to be in very close contact for 3 hours. After the time is up, boom, you have a Pactio.

...guess where Touta and Kirie got their seals on. Then go and see the chapter.

Kirie is an idiot, so instead of just giving a quick kiss to Touta and being done with it (it's not like they haven't kissed before), she'd rather spend three hours stuck to him to get the same results.

It's another thing that seems very asspulled for real little purpose, really.

I have no doubt in my mind that Kirie would have vastly preferred the kiss option.

Problem is, for whatever reason, her "save point" ability ended up turning into "time freeze" every time she kissed Touta...I don't remember fully when this started, but I think it was before they had that fight with Mage of Beginning.

Honestly, I don't think the mangaka thought this fully through, and only wanted to make the situation between Kirie and Touta...as lewd as they could make it. On that score, they succeeded.
