Originally the character in Chrono Cross, Guile, was supposed to be Magus. But Square axed the idea.
So here's the idea. What if when Magus busted his ass into the alternate dimension to find Schala, the Dragons or Lavos or whatever, sealed his identity, leaving him with no idea of who he is.
Cue Kid and Serge's arrival to Termina. Guile see's them and he gets a vision of a super nation, Zeal and his sister Schala.
As he spends more and more time around Kid, more and more of his identity comes back to him.
Until one day he isn't carrying a wizards staff anymore. He has a scythe. The mask is gone, and he's wearing his old battle equipment.
The return of Magus would've been a sweet, sweet, thing.
