WALL-E: The Last of His Kind

Assembled at a factory in Detroit in the early twenty second century, WALL-E was just a simple cleaning robot.

He was assigned to a particularly small town in the Pacific Northwest, and as one of only four cleaners in the area, he lived a relatively solitary life.

Every day he left his home to go clean a world he had no hand in dirtying.

At first, there were millions of beings just like him. They were all hard workers, all ready and willing to give their all for a cause that did not affect them in any way.

A simple design flaw thinned their numbers by half in the first decade. Each Wall-E had three cooling units to lower their internal temperature, but it was eventually found that they failed regularly. A standard WALL-E had three, could run for a time on two, but 'died' when running with only one.

In the bigger cities, one could rarely go down the street without seeing a mechanized corpse lying here or there.

WALL-E, in an effort to survive, reluctantly resorted to a form ofà cannibalism.

They had parts that he needed, and they were too far gone to be saved.

Was what he did so wrong?

Perhaps, but he still soldered on.

As the years passed however, the pickings drew increasingly slim.

Only so many of them were assigned to each city after all.

It came a time that WALL-E was forced to make a choice: stay and slowly run out of the parts that he needed to survive, or leave and find new parts.

It wasn't that hard really.

He packed up his meager selection or material possessions, and went on his way.

In the following decades, the robot hopped from town to town working every day like the last.

At first he saw the odd WALL-E like himself, and in those days he rejoiced in the companionship, but as time passed those friends eventually became replacement parts just like the rest.

Nearly one hundred years had passed since his mission had begun, and he had seen none like himself in the last fifty.

Was he the last of his kind? Were there others like him?

One day as he compressed what may have been one of millions of bails, he spotted a sign at the side of the road.

Seattle, 23 miles.

He had heard of Seattle. A big city. There were over ten thousand WALL-E's assigned to there. How could have never thought of this?

A big city meant more replacement parts! He wouldn't need to move anymore!

The big city was as wonderful as he had hoped. Not only that, but there were still three working WALL-E's in the city! After all those years!

He would follow them around and they would all work in teams to finish their work faster.

He was content. That is, he was content until one day he saw something that made his lubricant boil.

They were salvaging parts just like him!

He thought he was the only one...

A staggering realization came over him.

With four WALL-E's working the same place, he would be in competition for the same parts!

How long would it be before they had worked through all that remained? A century? Two?

Something had to be done. WALL-E wasn't ready to 'die' like all the others of his kind. No.

One night, as the others rested, WALL-E made the choice to live.

Their coolant systems didn't last long in his chassis, but he did not fret, for there were others just like them laying in the streets.

For nearly seven hundred years he toiled, and for him there was no end in sight.

--

It's an agreed upon fact that WALL-E is the last robot left on earth, but no one ever stopped to ask the question why.

There were a lot of things like that, and still are for several things, and they're meant for younger kids.

I think I have a collection of power ranger ones...
