Evangelion Weapon Get

I'm new to NGE and thus also new to NGE fanfiction, so I apologise in advance if any of this sucks. Because, it probably does. This is an idea that occured to me because I happened to be reading NGE fanfiction while listening to The Megas' new album.

The idea is simple, yet horrible. In this idea, Evangelions are constructed with a "Weapon Get" system. Whenever a Unit defeats an Angel, it gains access to one of the Angel's weapons.

...And so does the pilot.

Power is a rather corrupting influence. What that means ultimately differs on a case by case basis.

I have a few ideas for this story, but before writing much I'd like to bounce some ideas around. Let's start with what everyone else makes of it, and go from there.

If I remember correctly this was a major plot-point of Children of An Elder God though in that case the Angels were a grab-bag of Cuthulu mythos monsters and thus rather more squicky than regular Angels.

The idea has merit; one of Misato's largest driving forces is her hatred of the Angels, if Shinji is slowly becoming more and more like them she's going to be having some conflicted feelings that need resolution.

Also you need to decide if Gendo knows about this before hand; the pilots becoming mini-abominations with super powers does little to help his standard scenario and could very easily destabilise it utterly and Gendo is not one to stand idly by and let that happen.

Maybe if I post a little something it'll inspire more discussion. This is kind of a rough draft, so anywhere you see necessary improvement please let me know.

You Got: Disclaimer. None of this belongs to me.

How had he been convinced into this again? Go out and see the Angel fight the Evangelion! Without protection, permission or a plan! Oh yeah. He was friends with a stubborn idiot that was gonna get himself killed, and so Toji had elected to go along with to get himself killed at the same time. After all, what were friends for? At least Kensuke looked like heÆd die happy.

Why wouldnÆt he? It was a hell of a show. Two giants fighting to the death. One a great big purple robot piloted by the careless idiot that dropped a building on TojiÆs sister, the other an equally large freaky alien thing with glowing whip-like arms. Funny thing though, if he squinted the Angel sort of looked like a giant -

ôDick move!ö Kensuke yelled as the Angel dissected the oversized gun the Evangelion was wielding with its massive energy whips.

ôHeÆs beaten already,ö Toji said. Was it any wonder? The punk hadnÆt even fought back when heÆd punched him in the face. Little wimp like that couldnÆt hope to stand up against an Angel. No backbone!

The Evangelion back pedalled furiously, its only chance of staying out of the reach of the AngelÆs whips. Though it was safe the surrounding buildings were most certainly not. They fell to the ground like rain, each one a stark reminder of what would occur if the robot was within reach of its enemyÆs deadly attack.

It was not quick enough. One stray tendril found its way around a leg, and the next moment Toji saw his too short life flashing before his very eyes.

ôItÆs flying right at us!ö Kensuke yelled.

ôYou donÆt say!ö Toji yelled back. ôI didnÆt notice!ö

By dint of mercy, fate or a god with a sick sense of humour the two of them managed to come away unscathed. Unless one counts the evacuated bladder and the resulting necessary changes of clothing that came of seeing a giant goddamn robot being flung right at you, only missing because of the random way the fingers were separated. Toji and Kensuke did the only sensible thing that anyone could do in the same situation; They cowered between the EvangelionÆs fingers.

A metal tube protruded from the back of its neck, and the next moment they heard a womanÆs voice ôYou boys, get in it! Quick!!ö she yelled, and they needed no further encouragement! The two of them scrambled towards the only chance they had of getting out of this intact and the only even reasonably safe cover for miles around.

ôEw, hey!ö Toji said, caught off guard by the liquid immersion. ôThis stuff stinks! And how the hell are we even breathing?ö

ôMy camera!ö Kensuke moaned.

The womanÆs voice appeared once again, this time accompanied by an image on the - hey, sheÆs kinda hot! ôListen, Shinji! Retreat for now. Your umbilical was cut, so you donÆt have long! Besides which, you know what will happen if you kill the Angel with your two passengers there.ö

Good plan! Good plan! Never mind worrying about what she meant about killing the Angel with them inside, but getting out of here sounded alright by his book!

ôDonÆt run away...ö Shinji whispered, the sound barely carrying even at this close distance. ôCanÆt run away...ö

ôUh... New kid? She said to flee! Get outta here already!ö

The scream that came next reminded Toji of earlier in the school yard but only because of how completely the images didnÆt match up. Gone was the wimpy little snot making no excuses or trying to defend himself or anything, and in his place was a rampaging berserker compelling his Evangelion to charge full speed directly at an enemy capable of casually cutting whole buildings in half.

ôMy camera!ö

Later on Kensuke was so getting his ass beat.

ôSachiel Spear!ö Shinji shouted.

ôSay what now - Argh! What the hell was that?ö

It felt like his arm had dislocated or broken or something. This pain! Was this what he had to go through piloting this monster? How could he stand it?

The second time it happened he was able to see it properly. Something shot out of Unit 01Æs hands. First one then the other. Each was knocked out of the air, but that was the point. It was a distraction tactic forcing the Angel to decide on the larger threat. The robot running towards it, or the mysterious projectiles. Suddenly, the decision seemed to fall on the side of the robot much as it inevitably had to, but by now Shinji seemed to have a better handle on how it moved and caught it out of the air, running forward to slam an open palm against the AngelÆs torso.

And the countdown began. Fifteen seconds. Fourteen. Thirteen.

Another scream of rage accompanied the pain, but so too did a loud thump as though something had been struck. Hard. It came again and again, the scream, the pain and the thump. Almost like a heartbeat. Each time a little quicker, a little more desperate than the one before.

Ten. Nine. Eight. Seven.

But the Angel was not taking this lying down. While one of its tendrils was caught in a slowly burning hand, the other was certainly free enough to skewer the torso of its enemy. This pain! How could he live with this pain?!

Four. Three. Two. One.

There was a sudden loud crack, and the Angel slumped forward. Defeated at last. It was over, and in the process Toji had found a new respect for someone heÆd despised this very morning.

Except it wasnÆt quite over yet. All the monitors began to flash an odd colour, and the liquid reverberated with an odd melody. English letters began to appear on the monitor in front of them, next to a rather crude image of the Evangelion.

ôY-O-U - G-O-T - S-H-A-M-S-H-E-L - W-H-I-P,ö Kensuke read out, and the image of the Evangelion transformed before their very eyes. Its arms disappeared and in their place... In their place were the same energy whips used by the Angel!

ô... The hell is going on here?ö Toji asked. He was not hopeful about getting satisfying answers.

ôUm... Sorry about this,ö Shinji said, the mask of rage and adrenaline wearing off. ôI understand this next part may sting a little bit.ö

ôNext part?ö Kensuke asked. ôWhat do you mean, next part?ö

The two boys passed out moments after from what would later be described to them as massive sensory overload.

===
The room was so large and ominous in design that even the shadows cast their own shadows. Nobody ever particularly desired to come in here to talk face to face with the commander in part because it meant that something had gone horribly, horribly wrong and that person had to answer for some small part of it.

Commander Ikari was perched at his desk like a bird of prey. A patient one at that. The sort that analysed its intended victim before delivering the most efficient swoop and kill. Today, Misato Katsuragi would have to avoid being on the menu. The best and only approach in her estimation was the truth, the whole truth and not one single sprinkle of deception. Anything less was like a drop of blood to a shark.

ôYou permitted two civilian children access into the entry plug. Explain.ö

ôI judged that the presence of those children impaired the Third ChildÆs ability to maneuver,ö Misato explained. ôThe most effective way to remove them from the battlefield was to permit them entry, and order Unit 01 to retreat for the time being.ö

ôExcept that Unit 01 did not retreat,ö the sub-commander said. ôInstead he continued fighting the Angel, even with the contamination in the plug with him.ö

ôAnd he defeated the Angel in the process. Is that not our purpose?ö

The two glowered at her. ôThat much is not in dispute. We are more concerned with the contamination to Doctor AkagiÆs experiment.ö

ôDiscipline the Third Child for disobeying orders at your own discretion,ö the Commander ordered. ôFor now, have the two contaminants escorted to Doctor Akagi. Leave.ö

Misato nodded in acknowledgement, and turned around to retrieve the two boys from the medical ward. The two of them needed to be raked over the coals as well, regardless of what Shinji had pleaded.

ôOne piece of advice,ö the sub-commander said, just as Misato reached the door. She froze to hear what the old man had to say. ôDoctor Akagi sounded a little irate. Whenever she mentioned the word æscienceÆ, I could make out no less than three exclamation marks. Perhaps more. My old ears arenÆt quite what they used to be.ö

Oh, boy.

Well, if the pilot as well as the Eva 'Gets', this Shinji has an even better reason for not fighting back against Touji than he did in canon: not wanting to kill the idiot.

The character I'm most looking forward to writing is Asuka. While Shinji fears the new powers he has and thinks he's becoming a freak, Asuka craves it like a drug.

I guess you could put it that way if you like. He's not a robot or an android or anything. He's a human with access to superpowers.

Here's a little bit more. Hopefully it should explain things a little bit.

=====

ôShamshel Whip!ö Shinji yelled. He was standing in a large, mostly empty room save for himself and a wall of metal targets ten feet in front of him. ôSHAMSHEL whip! Shamshel WHIP!ö

Nothing was happening. Ritsuko scowled at the monitors showing the Third Child from what appeared to be every conceivable angle. Nothing had changed since they had began. Not even the slightest deviation. There could be no further doubt. The contamination in the plug had interfered with the system.

The door opened behind her, and she heard a gasp of delight. ôThis... Is... Incredible!ö a young boyÆs voice said, wonder dripping from every syllable. Ritsuko smiled. It was always good to hear some appreciation regarding her work, and this room didnÆt even rank in the top ten.

She was going to break his spirit, grind it into powder and put it back together again. Science demanded it.

ôWelcome to the weapons testing room,ö Ritsuko said, keeping her back to her new lab rats for now. ôI am the head of NERVÆs science division, Doctor Ritsuko Akagi.ö She spun around and stared them down with a look that would make the moon shirk back, just in case. ôAnd we are going to get to know one another very well indeed!ö

Pause for effect, pick out a syringe, pretend to be considering it, then a quick shake of the head while putting it down. Then pull out a larger one, grin like a maniac and nod emphatically. Ah, the sweet sound of lab rats gulping nervously as they realised their new position in life! How fulfilling!

ôTell me boys, was it worth breaking out of the shelter to be scared half to death?ö

ôHey!ö the taller boy said, what was his name again? Oh yes. Toji Suzuhara. ôWho - who says we were scared?ö

ôOh, my apologies. I thought - Never mind. Ah! I see they washed your clothes while you were unconscious,ö Ritsuko continued. ôThat is good, LCL leaves such awful stains. Especially when mixed with urine.ö

ôDoctor Akagi?ö ShinjiÆs voice interrupted. ôCan I please stop now? ItÆs not working.ö

Ritsuko reached for the button, switching on the microphone connected to the actual test area. ôNot yet,ö she said. ôTry your other weapon. We need to make sure it still works fine. Destroy the targets so that weÆre completely sure.ö

ôIs that Shinji in there?ö Kensuke asked. ôI thought you said this was a weapons testing room. WhereÆs his Eva?ö

As if in response, something quite frightening happened onscreen the very next moment as Shinji uttered two words.

ôSachiel Spear!ö

It was like something out of an 80s horror movie with top of the line practical effects, except it was real. Oh, but it was so very real. Even Ritsuko had to admit it had unnerved her a little bit the first time it happened, but she got over that pretty quickly. In this line of work, one had no alternative. The Third ChildÆs arm doubled in mass as a brand new bone surrounded by brand new muscles grew out of the outer portion of both his arms. The overall effect was like someone had grafted two additional limbs to his body and done it seamlessly, with no scars or additional signs of mutilation on the flesh.

But the horror did not end there. Oh, but it couldnÆt! How could it? Ritsuko barely supressed the urge to cackle like a maniac as Shinji placed his hand against one of the targets, took a deep breath - and then the flesh over his additional arm mass rippled as if something was moving under it. As if? Try because. This became particularly apparent when a long bone protruded from his shoulder, and it had to be said that her conscience was a little eased upon realising that his nervous system had adapted to accommodate for the pain he should be feeling while using this particular upgrade. Nonetheless it had to feel kind of odd to be capable of freely moving a bone underneath the skin without collapsing in agony.

The bone shot forward leaving the sound of reinforced bone striking reinforced steel echoing throughout the room. If ShinjiÆs hand were not in the way, it would be easy to tell that the bone was reinforced much, much better than the steel had been. The bone withdrew once again, and shot forward once again, much like a bullet from a gun. Thrice more this procedure repeated; Withdraw the bone, shoot it forward. On the last and fifth occurrence, the metal target had been outright pierced.

ôThat will do for now Shinji. Return to the locker room, and you can go home for the day. Next time you disobey orders, IÆve been instructed to keep you in there from dusk till the very next dusk. Got it?ö

ôY-Yes Doctor Akagi! I- I understand! IÆm sorry!ö

And off he scurried, one lab rat free from the maze. Now for the other two, who were staring in slack jawed confusion and bafflement about what the hell theyÆd just seen.

ôIÆd warn about catching flies, but NERV is particularly good at dealing with pests. You get me?ö

ôWha- What did he just -ö Toji began.

ôThat... That was the coolest thing I have ever seen in my entire life! How did he do that?!ö

Ritsuko gave him a bow. ôEven a pest like you can appreciate my genius, it seems. That is my pride and my joy. My raison dÆetre, my lifeÆs work, the final and most perfect system to be added to the Evangelion. Feel privileged, for you number among the rare few to see firsthand the power of Weapon Get!ö

ôWeapon...ö Kensuke began.

ô...Get?ö Toji finished.

ôWe donÆt know much about the Angels,ö Ritsuko lied. Right through all her teeth, but screw it this was impressive enough as was. ôBut we can be pretty sure that theyÆre not all going to be the same. Which means we canÆt be the same either! The same strategy only works against different kinds of enemies with a huge amount of luck, and IÆd rather depend on genius than luck. Any day of the week. So! We needed a way to quickly and efficiently redesign the Evangelions so that they could adapt to further Angels as rapidly as they come! And what better way to do this, than to steal the very skills of already slain Angels? That is the power, the genius, the passion of Weapon Get! Whenever an Evangelion deals the killing blow to an Angel, it acquires the abilities of that very same Angel!ö

Off in the corner, Maya stood up and applauded with tears of pride pouring from her eyes.

ôUh... So how did Mr Pilot get the bone... arm thingy?ö

ôFull marks for paying attention!ö Ritsuko declared with a great big thumbs up. ôIt turns out that because of the way a pilot has to sync with the Evangelion, whenever Weapon Get triggers, the skill is stored inside the pilot rather than the Unit. I have to say this much: If Shinji wasnÆt such a nice kid, IÆd feel really sorry for anyone that, say, punched him in the face at school.ö

Toji swallowed nervously, and tried to look the innocent. He was not very good at it.

ôExcept that he canÆt seem to trigger his new skill... Which means it must have gone elsewhere!ö Ritsuko picked up the same syringe as before, and advanced towards the boys with very carefully weighted steps. ôSince the only change was your presence in the plug, that means I have no other choice. I hope you boys like science!!!ö

She hoped the Magi were recording this. Their screams would be tremendously helpful in getting her some sleep tonight.

I'm not sure on this one.

I am tired, so I can't be entirely fair, but something seems off.

It's like you're trying to go for crack based horror and it's not working for me.

Maybe if I re-read it when I'm not having tiredness induced double-vision I can make a fairer judgement on it.

Oh, my. Asuka and Shinji kill Israfel together. Do they each gain the ability to split in two, or do the instead gain the ability to merge with each other?

I prefer the former, personally. Omake idea: they each split into a Nice twin and a Naughty twin. The Naughty twins go off together. Could be comedy, lemon, or both.

So if Iruel is killed by an Eva, does the pilot receive hyper-evolution/adaptation ala Doomsday from DC comics, or do they become a Technopath?

I've got to ask because this is really bugging me, is my web browser fucking with me or are you really not bracketing your dialogs with apostrophes ? Because this is the third time in the past two day that I've read a preview on this board that completely lack apostrophes and it's really bugging me. :sisi:

According to my browser Deathwings, your browser is fucking with you. Check your page encoding maybe?

As for the idea, it seems potentially interesting, but it's got a couple of issues. First of all, humor aside, if Weapon Get requires the recipient be synced up, Touji and Kensuke weren't actually (or properly) synced to the Eva so they shouldn't have gotten it/should have all gotten it/should have gotten pale copies. And I'm not just saying that to limit the spread of powers or to keep things neat and clean. They didn't share the pain of Shinji's impalement, in fact, it's been a long time since I've seen that episode but didn't Shinji actually stay like, half synced when he partially ejected the plug?

Second, as mentioned before: Gendou. Furthermore SEELE. It could provide for a really interesting angle as far as the UN/Japanese government goes though in relation to Kaji. "Find out what the fuck is going on there. There's rumors of abominations and horrors worse then any book. Get us details. And schematics."

Jet Alone would not stand a chance though, I think. "So not only do you not have an answer for the AT Field but you can't compete with Weapon Get either? Yeah, no challenge."

Lotta potential, but while you've got an extra mechanic, you don't have a hook yet. Find that hook and you may just have something.

To begin with, I'm not telling what Angel powers actually do, it's more fun to see discussion about them first.

Israfel is gonna be a lot of fun, though. Sure to be some fallout from that one.

Yes, it's a bit odd that Shinji didn't get the power, isn't it? Maybe there's more going on here than there first appears.

That could be a pretty interesting angle, but it's pretty likely that at least the basic idea behind Weapon Get are known about. Probably not the detail regarding the pilot getting the weapon too.

Jet Alone would not stand a chance though, I think. "So not only do you not have an answer for the AT Field but you can't compete with Weapon Get either? Yeah, no challenge."
I have a good few ideas simmering away regarding Jet Alone. Depending on what gets implemented, it might not be all that much of a pushover. Then again, I may decide to go the other way because everyone seems determined to make Jet Alone into something more than it was.

Lotta potential, but while you've got an extra mechanic, you don't have a hook yet. Find that hook and you may just have something.
While I have a pretty solid idea for the overall direction the story will take, I'm not entirely sure how to qualify the hook. I mean, it could be any of the following.

Gendo's new scenario based on Weapon Get.
The psychological effect it's having on Shinji.
The physical effects.
The Angels' attempts to adapt to the system.

Do any of those strike you as hooks? If not, what would you think of as a hook?

Here's some more.
===

They had claimed that the extended stay in the testing area was his punishment for disobeying a direct order. They knew how much he hated it, knew how much it hurt even in spite of the - what had she called it again? Altered nerve endings surrounding the attachment? Something like that. Still hurt. Maybe not as bad as it ought to but it still hurt.

But no. No, of course not. The real punishment was yet to come, and it would happen in such an innocuous manner that it did not seem that way. Not at first. It had begun when he and Misato arrived home, and she said to him ôYouÆve had a hard day. DonÆt worry about dinner tonight. IÆll take care of it.ö

Of course, he tried to gently remind her that it was his chore to make dinner and that really, he didnÆt mind. She insisted. Shinji buckled, and now he was staring down at some insane mixture of instant noodles, beer, whipped cream and - æWhen did we get ice cream sprinkles?Æ He risked a look up and winced at the sight of Misato wolfing hers down without a care in the world. HeÆd seen shark attacks in documentaries that less thoroughly consumed their prey.

ôNow that was good eating!ö she said upon finishing. ôThis is the life!ö

Shinji reluctantly fed a small amount into his mouth, and it felt like the room did a simultaneous 360 degrees flip around every axis. Not his most unpleasant experience of the day, but it ranked in the top three.

ôHow did the weapons test go?ö Misato asked, but Shinji doubted that she didnÆt already know. She wanted to hear him say it. Well, fine.

ôIt didnÆt work,ö he said, pausing to take another reluctant mouthful of the meal in front of him. Nope. Much less painful to talk about the test. ôI tried to activate it like my other power, but it didnÆt take at all. Thank goodnessö

ôYou know, itÆs funny. Some boys would love to be in the place youÆre in right now,ö Misato said. ôPiloting giant robots, fighting alien monsters, getting superpowers. That Aida kid would probably sell a lung for a chance at this.ö

ôNo way,ö Shinji said. ôI donÆt believe that. Who would ever want powers like this?ö

On the other side of the planet, a red haired girl cursed the dusty room she was sitting in.

ôWho would ever want to have to fight monsters on a regular basis, being forced to fight weird alien things with even weirder alien powers?!ö

This time, the red haired girl swore a lot louder, paused the video she was watching and stormed off to get some allergy medication.

ôWho would ever want to be a freak like me?ö

The red haired girl felt a sneeze coming on... but it never arrived. Which was in its own way much more annoying than the actual sneeze.

ôEh? Well, thatÆs a shame!ö Misato leaned forward conspiratorially. ôYou could have put those whips to pretty good use on some lucky girl, huh?ö

ôM-Misato! I - I would never -ö

ôHm, or then again you might prefer to put that bone to good use instead? Just like a piston, isnÆt it?ö

Ah. HeÆd been wrong once again. The meal was not his punishment. It was the simple fact that the mental image inscribing itself unto his subconscious would not leave him until the day he died. Perhaps not even then.

ôEat up, Shinji! A growing boy like you canÆt afford to skip a meal,ö Misato said moments before gulping down another can of beer.

A growing boy like him couldnÆt afford a lot of things. The burden of having to pilot a giant robot to save more lives than he could imagine. The strain and responsibility that inevitably came from acquiring Angelic powers. The knowledge that he was a freak and that his actions today may have turned two other boys into one as well. Weirdos. Oddities. Creatures. Inhuman.

Nothing else for it. Shinji took a few deep breaths and wolfed down the - meal was the wrong word but nothing better sprung to mind - under the impression that it would be much better if he got it all out of the way all at once. The band aid principle. One sharp tug hurt way less for less time than attempting to gradually peel it off. This would hurt for a little bit but it would be better for him overall than sitting there picking at it for hours at a time.

Shinji let the container slide from his fingers barely noticing as it clattered against the table and rolled to the floor. All of a sudden he had much bigger concerns ahead of him, like the way that the ceiling was winking at him and beckoning for him to join it on jolly Jupiter where the happy cooks of the gas giant promised upon their third head and their heliotrope eyebrows that the pig people of alpha centauri would be forced to ride penguins to the moon. But first, the skunk plushies of stinkworld demand broccoli!

ôShinji? You alright?ö Misato said. When did she arrive on the SS Dust Bunny? Never mind! Her tactical genius and alcoholism was exactly what they needed to fight off the vodka horde! ôHere, drink this. You look a little parched.ö

The water drew him back down to Earth as the aftertaste retreated down towards his stomach. Which as an aside appeared to be more full of raw hatred than potential nourishment right about now.

ôI think IÆm going to go listen to music for a little while,ö Shinji said. He rose a bit slower than he liked from the table and damned the floor beneath his feet for being so determined to try and make him stumble. He arrived at the room with no further incident and lay in his bed, too lost in thought to properly enjoy his favourite musical piece.

He made an unconscious flexing motion with his arm, remembering what it felt like to have bone move under the arm. It didnÆt hurt, but that only served to make the experience all the more weird, all that more surreal and all that more exhilarating. It was power. Real power. Not borrowed from the Evangelion. His father could at a momentÆs notice deliver any of a dozen possible means to shut that down. This power was his and it felt good to use it. Nothing could take it away from him.

Of all the horrors Shinji had experienced since arriving in Tokyo 3, that was the one that chilled his spine the most. He didnÆt want any more powers but he ached for it. He was glad he didnÆt want the whip arms and felt guilty for the possibility that someone else should have it but he felt jealous of them, cursed himself for letting them taste this sweet nectar. Two conflicting sets of emotions whirling in his brain. He was a freak. He was not normal which means not boring which means people would not accept him screw acceptance you have power so they would leave him alone or hurt him they would not dare, you can make them stay force them to.

He flexed his hands again, and tried to move muscles he did not have at the moment. All it would take was a whisper and they would appear. All it would take was a whisper. All it would take...

Shinji lay perfectly still on his bed as the music continued to play. He barely even noticed his eyes drifting closed.

Imagine an apple. A simple ordinary apple. Could be red, could be ripe, doesnÆt matter. Just picture a single apple. Got the image? Okay! Imagine two of the same apple side by side. Got that? Good! Now try a row of ten apples, side by side same as before. Once that image is held, try two hundred and five. Two hundred and five apples sitting on some surface or other. White empty space, a field, a carpeted floor. DoesnÆt matter. Just, try to picture that without visual assistance. CanÆt be done. Not by most humans anyway. All that most people would say is something like ôthatÆs a lot of apples.ö Not a wrong answer necessarily, it kind of is a lot of apples to gather in one place and put all in a row for whatever quirky reason that probably only really makes sense in the head of whoever set the situation up. But, that was kind of the point. Humans have trouble with big numbers, largely because it is often difficult to properly visualise what that number represents.

As another more pertinent example, the various dimensions of the Evangelion. Height, width, depth, weight, mass, power requirements. Speak those numbers to an average person and the response would be a whistle and ôthatÆs a lotö. Yes. It was a lot. It really was. However! Until one found oneself standing at the feet of one of these monstrously huge structures, until one gazed into its eyes that lay somewhere between alive and dead... Until one of these was performed then the true nature of ôbigö did not quite occur.

It was not big in the same way that space was, which was more along the lines of vast and infinite. A beautiful, glorious nothing filled with massively tiny somethings so far away that a lot of them had probably ceased to exist by the time we noticed them. This was a different kind of big, the kind that had weight to it. A size you could touch, feel beneath your suddenly fragile seeming fingertips. It was not merely big. It was alive.

Right at this very moment, Ritsuko Akagi was staring down at one of the two Evangelions they had from a walkway so high above the floor that if she happened to trip and fall she would be dead long before hitting anything. Good thing she wasnÆt the clumsy or careless sort. Then again, nor was her mother...

ôHow long will the repairs be?ö Gendo Ikari said. The man moved like a ghost when he had the mind to. How long had he been there as she stared in contemplation at the culmination of the life work of - how many people? Too many to count, yet it was a fraction of the number that owed their lives to this very project.

ôAnother few days. A week at most.ö Ritsuko chuckled and shook her head. ôItÆs funny, isnÆt it? After two battles with an Angel, Unit 01 has sustained less damage than Unit 00 inflicted to itself.ö

ôSome might call that irony,ö Gendo adjusted his glasses. ôI am more concerned whether it shall occur again. Will it?ö

ôIt never behaved this way in previous tests. For whatever reason, Unit 00 has rejected Weapon Get.ö Ritsuko scowled down at it, and she could swear that even though it hadnÆt moved an inch, it was looking back up at her with mutual animosity. ôBefore you ask I donÆt know why. Not yet. Even I donÆt fully understand the system yet. I donÆt know why it worked for Unit 01 - and according to the report from Germany Unit 02Æs tests went even better - but not for Unit 00.ö

ôDo you understand why Shinji was not the recipient of the latest weapon?ö

Ritsuko shook her head in disappointment. ôNo. No, I donÆt understand that quite yet. He was the one that was synced with the Eva. He was the one that had received it the last time. Shinji should have gained the ability to turn his arms into whips with two spoken words and yet his classmate got it instead.ö

ôIs it possible to transfer the weapon to its rightful owner?ö

Him and his scenario. æPlan AÆ he called it. This was his philosophy. Always have a backup plan. Always. Even if things look like theyÆre going well, it simply means you have the better opportunity to plan for when things to tits up. If anything, Plan A was helped by Unit 00Æs rejection of Weapon Get. She wondered if heÆd intentionally sabotaged the experiment to prevent Plan AÆs possibly failure, but soon dismissed that possibility. Sure, he could have. Sure, it would fit in with his normal method of operation. But! It would interfere significantly with Plans B and C if anything did go wrong, much like the failure very nearly did.

Besides which even if he had, sheÆd never be able to get at the truth. The best thing to do was ignore the possibility unless she happened to somehow stumble upon evidence to the contrary. A small amount of paranoia was healthy while working for Nerv. Too much got a person killed. Finding the right balance was the trick.

ôNo,ö she said after considering the problem for a moment. ôNot until we can determine the reason Shinji didnÆt get the power originally. That being said, it might be a good idea to have our little weapon thief come back in for further tests.ö

ôYour determination to put the fear of science!!! into him may make the boy unwilling to return.ö

ôThat wonÆt be a problem,ö Ritsuko smirked. ôI have the perfect lure in mind to reel him in. Oh yes, if he thinks interfering in my system would merely result in him suffering just once then the brat has another thing coming! IÆll start with stress testing to see how long the whip arms can reach, and then - ô

Most people would let her get on with ranting, back off and hope she didnÆt notice. Gendo Ikari was made of sterner stuff. Some might well say the sternest. His reaction to the outburst was to simply look at her, peering through his glasses with an unblinking gaze. This was sufficient to make her wilt, but he had to be quite careful. Too much might have caused her to back up a little too far, which might lead to her backing up rather a lot further in an uncomfortably perpendicular direction.

ôAhem!ö Ritsuko coughed, mildly embarrassed by her outburst. ôIt goes without saying that both boys had it made perfectly clear to them that if they even hint at the existence of Weapon Get outside these walls, I will be given carte blanche to get a little more creative in dealing with them.ö

ôOutside interference cannot be tolerated. In this one case, you may be able to learn useful information.ö GendoÆs focus shifted as he took a tiny step forward, closer to the edge so that he could better look down upon Unit 00. ôRei will be returning to school tomorrow.ö

ôAlready? She has a rather remarkable recovery time, given her injuries.ö

ôShe has expressed a... fascination with the Third Child.ö

ôHer? Fascinated by something? How novel. I didnÆt think she had the capacity for curiosity.ö

ôIt is not curiosity as we would understand it. Rei perceives the world in a very different way from most people around her. It makes life difficult for her.ö

Ritsuko chuckled. ôHow do we know that what we see as red is the same as what everyone else sees? It is our senses that define how we perceive the outside world, yet each of them is so easy to deceive.ö

Gendo tapped a hidden button in his collar, prompting two flames to propel from the sole of both shoes. ôInform me when progress is made on any of these issues,ö he said, arms crossed behind his back as his jet shoes lifted him off the platform and carried him up towards the ceiling, where a panel slid open directly above him. ôAnd visit me in my office later for stress relief. Bring your electro-magnetic paddle.ö

As he walked off, Ritsuko let herself chuckle, not maniacally, she could keep that in check for a private joke like this. They said she was the one with the mad scientist tendencies, oh yes. She couldnÆt hear the gossip but she knew it was out there. If only they could guess that Gendo made her look particularly serene in comparison. He was simply that much better at hiding it.

The lights were out. It was pitch black outside. The light on the street outside was broken again because the blasted repairman was an idiot that didnÆt know what he was even doing and would have been fired months ago if he wasnÆt connected in some way or another, which made Asuka particularly sick because sheÆd had more than enough of nepotism for today thank you very much.

The sole light source in the room was the television in front of her, with an ion gun shooting out a series of charged particles of electricity through a cathode ray tube, painting images in rapid enough succession to trick the human eye into believing they were witnessing continuous movement on the screen.

At this very moment the motion in question involved a purple Evangelion firing massive bone spears out of its arm at the Angel it was fighting.

Weapon Get worked as advertised. Wonderful news. Exciting. Exhilarating. See how she skips around the room in a state of sheer anticipatory bliss and joy and butterflies and rainbows. See how glad she is that her earlier test of the systemÆs implementation with her own Eva merited greater results than any of Unit 01Æs. What, couldnÆt you see it? CanÆt you tell from the smile on her face, the twinkle in her eye, the spring in her step? Oh? You canÆt? Why not?

Because she was sitting in front of a television in a dimly lit room, scowling at it with the intention of setting it on fire with her mind. Jealousy is not a particularly nice emotion to be at either end of, but Asuka knew that she couldnÆt help but swim in it. Damned lucky Third Child! A rookie! A stinking, rotten, lucky lucky lucky rookie got to play with her favourite toy before she ever got the chance! And why was that? Oh! HeÆs the son of NervÆs Commander! So, of course he gets first crack of the whip! Well! Surely by now everybody would see that the Angels were attacking just one place. Only one. Japan. Soon enough they would send her along, and sheÆd surpass the Third and his stupid looking purple giant. Was it supposed to be cool? Before her glorious Unit 02 it would crumble to dust in any competition of coolness! Effortless flawless victory!

The door behind her creaked open a crack and additional light flit into the room across her back. It made her wince a little.

ôHow long have you been watching that recording?ö Kaji asked. She didnÆt know the answer, hadnÆt been watching the time. Too jealous to care. ôShouldnÆt watch television in the dark like this. Bad for your eyes.ö

ôAre they sending me yet? TheyÆd be fools not to,ö Asuka said, turning around only to give him a polite smile.

ôThen fools be they! In their exact words æOnce we can ignore. Twice is a coincidence. Three times is a pattern.Æ Seems like youÆll have to wait for another one to appear in Japan before they try anything.ö

Asuka scowled at the television. ôSo heÆll creep ahead by another Angel. Hmph! I suppose if I must give him that much of a headstart, so be it! IÆll catch up to his kill count in no time flat, just you watch me!ö

Kaji chuckled, and sat on the couch behind her. ôThe next one may not even attack Japan, you know. What will you do then?ö

ôOh please! Of course itÆll attack Japan! Two separate Angel attacks hitting the same place so soon after each other? And it just so happens to be the one facility to have two Evas - two of them - ready before anywhere else had even finished with one? The Angels want something there, and for whatever reason everyone in command knows that and wants to keep it covered up.ö

ôSmart girl,ö Kaji said, prompting Asuka to turn and smile at him. He rubbed his chin in thought. ôI wonder what it is...ö

ôI donÆt care,ö Asuka shrugged. ôSo long as they donÆt get it before I get sent there, the Angels never will! IÆll stop them at every step, and my wonderful Unit 02 will steal every weapon they have along the way!ö

ôOh, Asuka! IÆm not sure about this Weapon Get system. DoesnÆt something about it strike you as odd? What if there are side effects we donÆt know about yet?ö

ôThe only side effect of Weapon Get,ö AsukaÆs smile took on a darker tone, as a single word echoed in her mind. It would be hers. It would be her just reward for hard work, for toil for sweat and for tears. All for her. Not for some lucky rookie that so happened to be the commanderÆs son. Not for someone that simply tripped into the position. No. It was all hers and hers alone, just for the taking. ôIs awesome power.ö

Was that the worst the insects could manage? They had thrown their worst and the damage was already nearly repaired. At worst that had been an irritation. A distraction. A diversion from the purpose. The call, that sweet irresistible call was so much nearer now. Yes. So near. No more irritants to contend with. No more distractions. For now all that remained was to determine the most efficient way to get down to the right level. Dig. Must dig. Get closer, then dig.

An unknown quantity loudly declared its presence. Not with sound. With presence alone. ôI am your enemy!ö its presence roared. ôWe shall fight until one of us is dead.ö

Very well. This presence was an abomination. Even if it did not wish to fight, it would have to be killed regardless. The abomination rose out of the very ground, doubtless the final guardian barring the way to father. It stepped forwards, and crashed to the ground with its next. Pitiful. Regardless, destruction had to take place and a point of vulnerability was the best time to engage in this course. It was almost enjoyable breaking its limb. The scream of pain it made was even more so. How dare such a being exist! Pain was too good for it! No amount of suffering could be enough for this blasphemy! It even had the audacity to not put up a fight to defend itself, even as it lay on the ground with a gaping injury to its head.

Another roaring presence manifested, and for a moment confusion reigned. Another abomination? If so, from what direction? It was everywhere. No. Not everywhere. It merely seemed that way because it was so large compared to what came before... Could it be? No! It could not be! It must not be!

From the same being? Impossible! Where before there was a clumsy anomalous abomination, the final attempt by these insects to hide from the purpose... There was now a colossus, charging forwards with bloodlust oozing from every pore of its massive frame.

The assault was swift and brutal and relentless. The light of its soul flailed against that of the abominationÆs to no avail, being eaten away by the raw power the being now possessed. Where was this before? It was like a rampaging beast! Unthinking, merciless beast!

Fine then. Like any rampaging animal there was but one fate reserved for it. Defeat was inevitable now, which left but one recourse. To give a life to remove this heresy from the universe was a sacrifice gladly given.

ShinjiÆs eyes snapped open at the very moment in his dream where Sachiel exploded. He was in his room, on his bed, back to the door which was even now creeping open.

ôShinji?ö Misato said, standing in the doorway. ôI know we ask a lot of you, but... YouÆre doing a good job. Thank you.ö

The door closed and he let the breath heÆd unknowingly held leave his body. Shinji didnÆt sleep a wink for the rest of the night. He didnÆt dare even try.

The hook is usually something that readers find themselves. You can help it along, but a hundred different readers will likely have at least 74 different hooks.

Usually, the best way to develop a hook is humor. Failing that, mystery/suspense. Otherwise, you have to do it with length. Those aren't the only ways, of course, and some authors are able to just fabricate them out of thin air. Reputation can also be a hook in and of itself.

The Sachiel Dream: Doing it from the Angel's perspective is kinda different, though I've seen it once or twice before. However, most any fic that starts from the beginning or near beginning of Eva includes this. Unless it's plot critical I would strongly advise against it. For me personally it's very, "Been there, done that so many times I've started making modern art out of the t-shirts."

I love NGE fics, but you've picked probably the worst series to cut your teeth on/get into (I say cut your teeth because I don't recognize your name/style, but even if you are an established writer NGE's still a weighty series to start writing anything but crack for). because it's been around for a very, very long time. For example the first fan fic I read was some random NGE fic I don't remember anything about probably close to 14 years ago. So while you certainly don't want to ignore or discard what makes it an NGE fic, a lot of what can be done with Eva has been done with Eva as some point or another. Accordingly I would recommend that you focus strongly on Weapon Get and that you don't take any unnecessary time building things up. Eva's got a slow pace, Eva fics can easily have a slow pace. But keep in mind that they don't have to.

If I ran across Eva for the first time today, I'd probably enjoy the series to an extent, but I could easily see myself not finishing it. I like to laugh nowadays more then anything, so keep that in mind as you read my comments. It often needs to be at Award Winning? levels before I'm good for dark and dreary anymore.

I wouldn't worry too much. This will not be particularly dark, but it's not exactly gonna be light and fluffy either. I'm aiming for comedy, but not all the time. If we count these two posts as half of the first chapter, then the next one will focus largely on Rei and school. The one after that is Ramiel. I may combine the two if, upon writing and planning, it turns out I don't have as much as first believed, but right now the plan is for them to be seperate chapters.

That sounds pretty good then. In the end, all you can do is post it and watch the story sink or swim. I'm hoping this swims, so keep at it.
