During the show it was shown that the barrier of reality around Sunnydale is very thin thanks to the Hellmouth. Examples include the way the girl who thought she was invisible and was treated as such BECAME invisible. I have seen a few fic's where this mutability int he world around Sunnydale has been used. The most recent I read was called 'The One Who See's'. Basically due to the title and being treated as such Xander literally gained teh ability to see Aura's, magical energy etc more completly than experienced mages.
I thought about this and an idea popped into my head. What if all of Sunnydale was a fake. From the moment that Buffy stepped out of her mothers car at the first episode to the bus driving away at the end of season seven, none of it was real. Oh it HAPPENED, but it was all an illusion or something. Someone or something dreamt that world up and the people from outside Sunnydale participated. So Giles, Ms Callander, Buffy, Joyce, a few others, they are caught up in the illusion and maybe even changed from it.
Perhaps Giles NEVER was Ripper. He was just a British librarian that got caught up with Buffy, who might have simply been a cheerleader.
Willow, Xander and Cordelia and the rest of the people who are native to Sunnydale might not even EXIST or if they are they might be caught up in this Illusion as much as Buffy.a
The source of this Illusion? Perhaps it was some person with a unholy amount of power, perhaps a sleeping godling of some sort. Maybe some demon lord bound in the upper reaches of the hellmouth is dreaming. Perhaps every citizen of Sunnydale is a demon in human form and are manipulating the area around Sunnydale and LA to free themselves, commutating wtih the destruction of the Hellmouth which is more the source of their chains than a real gateway to hell.
