Up to ep 8 of In Another World With My Cellphone... it is somewhat amusing... but the thing is, based on the setup it seems to me it is supposed to be the way it is... I've seen far worse. I rate it way better than some things I've seen over the years, including the dreadful TTGL and Dog Days.

No... not heresy, but truth...

TTGL was dreadful and a travesty. Being both a waste of its potential and I regretted listening to the forum in believing it would be worth my time... I made tons of commentary at the time on all I felt wrong with each episode I watched, and problems and continuity errors noticed, and all I got was a mix of tons of flack from fanatical fans for the commentary and also everyone insisting that 'it got better the further in it went' and 'I just needed to watch more'. I at a later date checked out a few of the later episodes out of morbid curiosity... if anything, the series got worse, not better. 10 years since I watched it and I still remember the experience. In short it sucks, a lot. I liked its contemporary Heroic Age easily 100x more.

Dog Days I also had tons of issues with, and my one hope was that the princess would have gotten what she deserved for what she dis, but everyone here insisted she was right to do what she did to him. Combined with my other issues with it, it made the series pointless and unwatchable.

In comparison, In Another World With My Cellphone is a lighthearted over the top if predictable comedy.... decent drawing and translation, and mildly amusing.

TTGL was kinda bad, but to say Smartphone was better than it... That's a bit much, isn't it? At least TTGL had a more distinct Art style, interesting fight sequences and... Um... Sunglassess?

I get that TTGL is a show that a lot of people didn't like, and I completely understand why.

However, Smartphone is indeed objectively worse.

Even if the huge Mary Sue MC, hive mind harem, lack of any real conflict, and lack of any character depth weren't present, the sound editing was awful, the VAs phoned it in, the direction was terrible, and pretty much the only thing that wasn't horrible was the character design, and even that was only acceptable.

It was one of the worst technical jobs I've ever seen in anime, at least that wasn't done that badly on purpose as part of the joke. [I'm looking at you Inferno Cop.]

TTGL had fairly consistent art direction, great sound design [audio was the best part of TTGL], and overall had better characters with distinct personalities, an actual story, and elements that were well done on at least a technical level even if the anime's story and characters didn't work. It could at least manage basic editing and camera shots.

TTGL at least tried, Smartphone just doesn't give a shit. It doesn't even work as a cute girls harem show, and that's something that isn't that hard to manage mediocre with at least.

Smartphone can't even manage to be "The Room" of anime because it's not even interestingly bad which might be worth some entertainment on its own, it's also dull about being terrible.

Haven't seen Dog Days, but I doubt it's worse than Smartphone. That's a pretty low bar to meet even if it isn't good.

I saw the first half of the first season, and if it weren't for the the fact woman keep getting randomly stripped to their underwear, I'd think the show was created for under 10's.

Honestly, they might just have figured a slice of cheesecake would increase the shows demographics.

I looked it up and it probably is for kids. It's the same guy who did Lyrical Nanoha and seems to be targeting that same age range. The low end of that demographic would probably be in the 6-10 area and the premise seems like it's mostly focused there just based on the synopses.

In Japan that sort of gag is acceptable for a kids show. Particularly if they keep their underwear and don't show anything.

Those Who Hunt Elves revolves around that kind of gag, and while it's not for toddlers, it isn't really for adults either. It's an 8+ shonen show as well.

Hell, Pokemon has some pretty blatant sexual humor in it. The time Dawn and Ash ended up working at a maid cafe, Japan's version of Hooters. That time Brock wished he was Cynthia's ice cream cone. The "beach" episode involving an inflatable body suit and a bikini contest. I recall Brock made a jail bait comment once. Jessie and James both frequently make off color comments and allusions, etc, etc, etc...

Watched the Psycho Pass Movie: Engrish Eradication fan edit.

I don't mind Engrish in anime to a degree, but there is so much Engrish in this movie that it kind of breaks it and made it hard to watch, especially given the tone of the series.

I cannot see myself ever watching this movie any other way after this. In fact, I'm pretty sure I'll be watching it more often as a result of how well this fan edit came out.

It mixes the voice tracks from both the Sub and Dub. The Japanese characters speak Japanese with subs, and the English speaking characters use the Funimation English Dub. When the Japanese characters use English, they use the original broken English track of the sub for that as well.

The language barrier is a big part of the movie, so the impact of this is not a small deal for this particular movie.

Honestly, I'd like companies that localize anime to take note of this fan edit for the future in English releases of shows that have both a sub and dubbed version with characters that speak exclusively English when releasing them in the west. This is how it should be done.

I've finished Girls' Last Tour. It's a good thing they decided to go with the character designs they did. If they'd been more traditional anime or more realistic, the whole show would have been heartbreaking.

But it is good.

So watched Tenchi Muyo Ova 3 again and...Tenchi's Mom pretty much had some sort of mental illness towards the end of her life.

And that's...pretty effed up. I mean I laughed at her antics. But...yeah....

I felt Tenchis father and Grandfather should have been strung up by him for the crap they put him through over that.

I finished Smartphone... Ending could have been better, but I still think it better than TTGL, but meh, whatever.

Watching following:
- Up to Ep 18 on Chrono Crusade,
- Up to Ep 9 on Space Battleship Yamato 2199 (the new one),

Rewatching following:
- Up to Ep 4 on Campione
- A few random Eps of Railgun

That reminds me: was the fourth OVA series ever licensed in the US (or elsewhere)? I do have the first 3...

Kiyone was near 200 years old, without Juraian life extending water, GP life extension and enhancement or a Juraian Tree symbiote, she was essentially 100+ years into old woman category, essentially she was suffering from old people issues of doing dangerous things without regard to her personal safety, being extremely childish and so on.

Did you watch the 4th OVA yet?

They rereleased that?

Might have to check that out. It was a fun show.
Blinks... Photon? You mean Photon Idiot Menace? That was good if you like over the top stupidity... it was deliberately so though, and came over surprisingly good... Used to have it on VHS...

It's "Photon: The Idiot Adventures". I still own it on VHS, but haven't had my VCR hooked up since around 2000.

It did manage to do stupid comedy surprisingly well for an under the radar late 90s OVA.

It was made by the same studio that produced the Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki OVAs, which is why I picked it up to begin with.

Hmmm...

Actually, it is both, must be in edition or translation or both, look at the cover screenshots in the following two links between dvd and vhs:

https://www.amazon.com/Photon-Idiot-Menace-VHS/dp/6305809046

https://www.amazon.com/Photon-Idiot-Adventures/dp/B076M6H47X/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1515120708&sr=1-1&keywords=photon+idiot+adventures

So must be in which release or how translated.

The show's actual title is just "Photon", that's all that is on the title screen when you watch it and is the Japanese title.

The different subtitles have to do with how it was broken up when it was released on VHS and DVD. I've discovered I also own it on DVD since my last post and had forgotten about it.

The show's English language DVD title is "Photon: The Idiot Adventures" which covers the entire series, all six episodes are on one disk with that title. I believe that is the official English title for the entire show, all the places I've seen mention of it online have it under that title for the English release.

On VHS, it's broke up into three one hour, two episode volumes with three different titles for each volume, Idiot Menace, Enemy Pawn, and Emperor Strikes Back, all of which together make up The Idiot Adventures.

If you only had "The Idiot Menace" you probably haven't seen the whole thing before and should probably give it another look.

Now that I've found my old DVD copy, I probably won't get it again, but I am planning on a rewatch soon now.

Just binged Animegataris.

I knew something was "off" through most of the show, but was not expecting it to go as far as it did down that rabbit hole. It overdoes the enthusiasm intentionally and it is kind of necessary given the through the looking glass elements of the latter part of the show.

It was a fun show overall. Tons of references throughout, and it is actually a fairly good explanation of modern otaku culture in Japan. Not a show I'd recommend for someone new to anime because it does rely a lot on knowing what the hell they are talking about through large parts of the show.

I would have liked to have seen this as a two cour show so it could go a bit slower with some of the plot elements and make the decent into madness a bit more subtle, but it's satisfying enough as it is.

It does leave enough to start another season though. There's an unexplained character present in the finale, and motivation for the antagonist to return.

It's not a classic show by any means, but a good diversion that's worth a look if you're familiar with a fair number of modern anime.

Check this out if you haven't yet.

Started Net-juu no susume.

My head canon is that this is a sequel to Watamote set about fifteen years later.

Imoto sae Ireba ii.

The opening scene is the single greatest normie filter ever put to the screen.

Not much else to say aside from that as I haven't even finished the first episode. I may or may not drop this depending on where it goes from here.

I did drop Net-Juu. Too easy to see where it's going and I found the MMO stuff to be largely uninteresting. It's not bad, just didn't hold my attention very well and the cringe comedy wasn't doing it for me. I may come back to it later if I'm in the mood for a sappy but predictable rom-com.

I didn't hate it, I just didn't feel like that kind of show I guess. I'm unsure if I'll ever get back into it. Not because there's anything wrong with it, just the likelyhood that I'll probably be sidetracked by other anime instead.

EDIT: Not dropping Imoto. I'm liking it. It's not going to make my top ten or anything unless there are some seriously amazing twists in the second half, and I don't expect it, but it's more entertaining than I was expecting for what it is.

It's kind of like a pervy less detailed Bakuman or Gekkan Shojo Nozaki-kun. Not as good as either show, but still decent for what it is.

It's also got what seems to be some interesting sponsors. It uses real life alcohol brands and the board and card games the characters play are also real. Nearly every episode ties in some sort of real life alcohol brand, game, or other interesting trivia somehow. The product placement is strong with this one, and is mostly geared towards adult products.

The ecchi fetish stuff actually kind of works to serve the plot in a weird way. It's also got a sort of twisted melancholy thing under the surface and some depth to the characters. It's not super deep, but more than I was expecting.

The ending is somewhat unsatisfying. It doesn't really have one to be honest, and that's to be expected really.

That's pretty much my take on this show, it's much better than it should be given the premise and while there is a lot of ecchi humor, it doesn't really bring it down.

Also,
if I was this dude's step sister and it worked out that he was somehow unaware of it, I wouldn't tell him I was a girl either. I 100% get why Chihiro hasn't said anything, even if she does end up liking him in the end. Also, I totally saw that plot twist coming as soon as she spoke.

Almost finished watching Chrono Crusade, just 2 episodes left.

watched ep 11 of the Starblazers 2199

watched thru ep 3 of the Record of Grancrest War - interesting series

finished rewatching Knights and Magic. While they left it open for a season 2, I consider it unlikely. Pity.

I'm up to episode 7 of rewatching Campione

Overlord Season 2... seen 2 episodes so far, mixed feelings to be honest, liked ep 1, not so much ep 2.

I've read the Overlord LNs, the Lizard Men arc is probably the weakest one. It should pick up again after that arc.
