What (anime) are you watching?

Working my way through The Junji Ito Collection now. While it's great seeing his work animated, most of the stories so far have fallen into the 'wow, that's neat/interesting' side rather than the 'wow, that's horrifying' side. Still, worth watching for fans of Ito's work.

Watching Bogiepop na waranai, after watching Phantom in Locomotion is weird how the first story from the new series explained the other done a decade ago.

Was planning on checking out the new dub for Evangelion on Netflix.

That lasted exactly one episode.

It sucks.

The new cast is not good. I wasn't expecting everyone to sound the same, and was expecting different takes on some characters, but it's pretty bad.

The new script is a more accurate translation, but sounds weird because of it. They went a little too literal. It doesn't sound like natural English in a lot of places. The original did a much better job of sounding like English speakers talk.

Thankfully, the original Japanese is still there.

Also, Fly Me to the Moon is gone. It didn't survive the licensing. This is also only true in the US, which confirms that it was a licensing thing.

I have a hard time believing that Netflix couldn't afford the license. It seems like they were just being cheap, and they are catching a lot of justified flak for it being missing.

This is hands down the worst version of Evangelion ever released.

Check out the sub if you've never seen it before, it's still good, and it's nice that both movies are available on Netflix, but the missing music from the end credits is a serious issue as it is thematically important to the show.

If you have any other option for watching this show, go with that instead.

I have the original DVD releases still for the series and two original movies... I decided at that point I had the series, re-paying for it was not happening...

Yeah, I felt the same way when ADV decided to release the Platinum Edition. I already had the Complete collection, so why bother? Did pick up the Resurrection/Reborn dvds, though, for the 'director's cut' episodes... which was rather idiotic of me, in retrospect.

It is not like they were lying... each succeeding edition does have extra material, but come on... as good as NGE was... did they really need that many releases of the same material (I've seen some of it), each just slightly different. After the individual dvd's and movies(what I have), then there was original box set, complete, then platinum, then directors cut (I think that was the order). Now a new translation, no thanks... bleagh....

NGE is hardly the only one guilty of doing this... another example to come immediately to mind would be Robotech/Macross and the original saga... I think they've re-released it every two years or so for the past decade plus... I see no reason to upgrade (I think I got the 2013 edition)... (now if they actually ever officially released Macross7 and side movies/arcs in the US, that would be different, as mine is a less than stellar grade import copy box set)

I didn't realise that Robotech/Macross had had so many releases. I bought the original ADV DVD release and Animeigo's Macross remasters when they came out in the early 2000's. But Macross 7 isn't coming any time soon.

Why?

Music rights. The music rights have to be negotiated separately and, as people are learning with Netflix's version of Evangelion, music rights are a complicated issue.

Also, the constant milking of the Evangelion franchise in the form of reissues and re-releases has caused me to refer to the Rebuild movies as either the "Reheat of Evangelion" or "Rehash of Evangelion".

- ep 12 of Genius and X
- ep 12 of What are You Doing Here Teacher

Genius and X will go to 13, What Are You Doing Here Teacher is now ended...

I've read several different places that the new translation makes a pretty dramatic change to Shinji's relationship with Kaworu, and not for the better.

Well, The Junji Ito Collection was a pleasurable time-waster, even if it didn't really deliver on the scares. Did make me want to seek out more of his manga work, though, so there's that.

Starting Witch Craft Works now. First episode is ... well, it's got good art, so there's that. And interesting enemies. Robo-Bunny-dolls, really?

The villains and Ending song are about the only good things in that show. The rest of it is pretty terrible.

That was not well liked by most here... I actually enjoyed it... the main things to take into account with that series is as follows:

It is slapstick, do not take anything serious, and most things are quite over the top.

The main girl is the straight man... pretty much nothing phases her... but when she sets herself a goal... watch out

The three(later more) minions that go after the boy are kind of like team rocket, if they plan it, it will fail for them.

The sister is creepy.

On a minor note... the ending changes nearly every episode to include new characters.

On a completely different note, I want a fan fiction author to write a shield hero stories where Naofumi decides to get one of the evil demonic penguins from the island as a pet.... for evil demonic penguins... thought them quite cute, and an appropriate pet for him....

I want to see an anime where the main "protagonist" is an actual straw doll in a schoolboy uniform with a face drawn on it made of hirigana characters that has a typical battle school anime harem fighting over it and trying to get its attention as if it was a typical anime protagonist.

It should also have three friend characters, one who is an effeminate and pretty boy who is secretly very strong and wealthy, a tough idiot friend who somehow always gets beat up and fails when they try to do anything, and a sleazy money minded weasel friend who will gladly exploit the friendship of others for his own gain.

Also, an "evil" student council that fails due to its own incompetence, but blames it on the straw doll's interference.

It doesn't emote or move on its own, it just sits there like a real straw doll would. No changing characters on the face or anything. There should be no ambiguity about the straw doll. It is completely inanimate.

None of the "main" characters notice the main protagonist is a straw doll, but every background character does and reacts accordingly to it without ever saying anything to any of the main cast.

Call it "Hitorizumo no High School".

I had finished off everything I was watching... Here is what I've started on since...

A certain Acellerater
Lord El Malloi II case files 1 and 2 (glad they finally decided to show this)
Isekai Cheat Magician
and some series where a kid and mom are thrown into a game by the government based on a survey the kid answered.

Watched Saga of Tanya the Evil Movie... It needs another season.

I'm still waiting on the Legend of Galactic Heroes... I thought that was supposed to be coming out 2019...

Watched a Movie called Penguin Highway... weird and interesting. I would have liked a better ending though. Say a scene in the future where he succeeds and meets up with her... As that is one driven kid.

Watched Cells at Work! during Christmas. Pretty decent, though I would consider the manga better overall. Makes me curious how likely Cells at Work BLACK getting an anime would be?

Spent the last month getting caught up on MHA (that Deku vs Overhaul fight was awesome, but the still-shot heavy episode featuring Tintin was kinda lame), watching Chio's School Road (delightful comedy, works for anyone who had an overactive imagination during childhood), Laid-Back Camp (lovely slice of life series), and Rising of the Shield Hero (yeesh, that guy got the shitty end of the stick when being chosen, didn't he? Still, very exciting and entertaining series).

Gegege no Kitaro 2007, it's kinda interesting to see the comparations with the 2018 version. And Those who hunt elves, it's still funny as i remember.

Been watching Science Fell in Love, Isekai Quartet Season II, Railgun T all on Crunchyroll, and Spice and Wolf, and some anime Zombie series both on Hulu (the name escapes me at moment)

Apparently, trying to brute-force comprehension of a story by picking it up from its second (or third) season without watching it from the beginning doesn't really work. At least, not with the couple of series I'm trying this experiment on: Monogatari Series Second Season and Toaru Majutsu no Index III.
