What (anime) are you watching?

I finished watching the first season of "My Hero Academia". First time I'm seeing this and, well, I knew the series was popular, but I did *not* expect there to be 5 seasons of it out! Sheesq. Have I been living under a rock or something? (Don't answer that!)

Simply put, this was a lot of fun to watch. A lot of the focus of the show is on Deku (or Midoriya), but we have enough tangents with the other classmates/characters (especially All Might), that I'm growing certain expectations. Point I"m making is that the rest of the class is not unknown (like some other anime). It looks like there is a plan to use the different cast for different things in the series.

The tension between Midoriya and Bakugou is amusing and baffling. I find that charming. i.e. Bakugou's anger really does not make sense. He's just holding a grudge just because Midoriya isn't being as he expected him to be. To the show's credit, that's all it is and they take pains to make it obvious (At least, I will be *very* shocked if it turns out that Bakugou had another *reason* to be angry). Speaking of Bakugou, it is remarkable that he is not a hot-headed idiot. Yes, he appears to start out that way, but there are points in the season where he displays remarkable intelligence and thinking. Not genius or tactician level smarts, but just simple common sense that I can't remember seeing too often in other anime with similar muscle/power characters.

My favorite character (besides Deku & All Might) is Iida. He is an amazing class representative and awesome leader. Yes, he is very strict (a bit of an overkill), but it is obvious that he means well and truly cares for his classmates. In the very last episode when he announces "Your class rep has returned. I've fulfilled my duty and I've brought reinforcements!" - that was just cool and awesome. Go Iida!

The scene when Uraraka comments that "Deku" is a nice name and Midoriya embraces it - that was just cute. They are, as I understand the canon couple. Which is (so far) decently done (this is a Shounen anime, so I am not expecting a romance story - but what we have here is nice to see). As an "alternate" pairing, I find myself thinking of Midoriya and Asui. Or do we call her Sui? I'm not quite sure. Her official name is Tsuyu Asui but she perfers to be called Sui? That feels weird. A better explanation is that I misheard what she said.

I need to binge season 2 next. Hope its as good as season 1! Heck, I might just use some of the cast from this show as my desktop wallpaper background now. :D

Watched the first season of My Next Life as a Villainess

It was surprisingly light-hearted and cute and not at all dark outside of the inevitable cerberus syndrome final few episodes that these shows seem to like to pick up. Though I'm astounded by the new lows to which Catarina goes in her denseness to all the love interests around her. She's more dense than a neutron star. The fandom name of Bakarina totally fits her.

I guess if I was to write a fanfic with My Life as a Villainess...it'd have to be something really nice and sweet where Catarina brings Maria into the fold of the nobles when they're all young, instead of when they're all in the magic academy

There actually is a discussion topic. It's just that it's like pulling teeth to get people on the Discord to post here anymore, so that one's gone fairly unused.

And watched the second season of My Next Life as a Villainess up to episode 9, so now I have to wait for the last 3(?) episodes to still release.

The post-credits scene on episode 6 is absolutely adorable. Mildly surprised they had a genderbent scene in episode 7, even if it was in a fantasy scenario.

As I said earlier, she starts to get a clue-by-four, but she privately views it as fucking horrifying because she's basically become the heroine- which means of course that fucking everything around HER goes wrong now- which is also kind of a cliche in "isekai replaces the hero/heroine" schticks.

Been watching a couple oldies... Martian Successor Nadesico and Irresponsible Captain Tylor... both up through ep 6.

Not sure how many of you this applies, but apparently Cowboy Bebop is available on Netflix. I'll definitely end up watching it after my backlog of anime I'm watching there is done.

Was never really all that much of a cowboy bebop fan... could not really get into it.

For watching older anime... up to episode 19 of Tylor, up to episode 19 of Nadesico, and up to episode 11 of Legend of Galactic Heroes.

I re-watched a couple episodes of Arifureta and Realist Hero the other day.

Also watching that Reincarnated assassin series (up to ep 3).

Tempted to watch the series called 86

Watched the first 4 episodes of Komi Can't Communicate. The remaining episodes haven't been aired yet, looking at the schedule.

I like that they nailed the basic aesthetic of the manga, with the general art style, as well as some of the visual gags and quirks like Komi-san having large eyes time to time, and of course the occasional cat ears. Being animated really helps show off some of the scenes, especially with every time Komi is trembling in silent despair.

Tadano's voice sounds...a little off, from how I managed. A little more high-pitched too than I was expecting. Whoever Komi's seiyuu is, she's probably making bank. Title role, and only has to say a couple of lines an episode :p

Where the anime does good is showing off just how creepy and deranged some of the characters are, like Amagi and Yamai, who have shown up in the episodes so far. There's a few neat references to some games in the way they have occasional 'interface' cameos, like how two of the brief intermission shots in the first episode are from the Mega Man games.

They do too good a job imo of making Najimi appear female. Screw ambiguous gender, I'm considering her a girl, especially with how cute she is animated :p

Got caught up on The Aquatope on White Sands. Nice series. I really do like these quiet, slice of live series. A lot more than the action series that I used to watch so much, like MHA or DBS. Although I am going to start 86 next. That one looks neat.

Watched episode 5 of Komi-san Can't Communicate. Still very cute, though the art style does occasionally feel a little bit cheap (it's the large number of shots that remained paused or move very little).

I think this first season is only 8 episodes long? Looking at the manga, I think episode 4 went up to chapter 27, so the 8 episodes will be within what I've read of the manga so far (the first 60 chapters).

For each of the following, I've watched for the first time the first 7 episodes:
- Isuca
- Worlds Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated
- 86
- Our Last Crusade

For the following, I've watched for the first time the first 18 episodes:

Finished up the last three episodes of My Next Life as a Villainess X (season 2).

The second season was a little...meh. I think it got sidetracked too much with some individual arcs, including a three-episode kidnapping subplot right before the season finale that I felt didn't add too much to overall story or character development.

I watched the first six episodes of this so far. Besides episode 6, which has a really raw energy of its own, I'm jiving with the first five episodes.

What I like about the show is that when it wants to, it has some really slick animation and some nice, stylistic bits. The OP is just insanely good, and it has almost that 'James Bond' vibe that the Bond movies like to do weird effects for their intros. The first half of the first episode is definitely the 'moneyshot' for an animation sequence so far, though I'm hoping it ramps up as it progresses through Lugh's age. I'm mildly surprised and impressed they actually switch up his VA as he gets progressively older, though I'd honestly rather that he still 'think' in his old man voice.

Also, the fact that the guy getting reincarnated is a crusty old man who just retired, and not a teenager or twenty-something with little social skills. It shows in his reincarnated mannerisms, where he very rarely has any foolish moments (outside of when his mother tries to get him to crossdress...wtf). Contrast to a typical teenager isekai protagonist that might be a blushing idiot at the thought of sexual relations.

That just updated to episode 8... kind of interesting what the father pulled on him, and it sounded like he honestly did not see it coming, though in retrospect he probably should have. Without giving too much away, the father had an additional motive for the son being away under a false identity....

One thing you did not mention, that I personally liked, was the fact that every now and then, they give a tidbit on the goddess... where she is checking in on other candidates she had tried pulling for this duty... that is actually nice to have seen, because i was wondering if there was not some hidden mechanations going on in the background, but with those scenes she really comes across as having been legitimate if eccentric.

EDIT: as for the others I'm watching:

For the following, I've rewatched the first 9 episodes:
- Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Sempai

For each of the following, I've watched for the first time the first 9 episodes:
- Isuca
- 86
- Our Last Crusade

For the following, I've watched for the first time the first 19 episodes:
- Jobless Reincarnation

I'm a bit confused on one item with this latest episode, but we will see if he does not have at least the one come with him later. We've a few episodes left so my confusion may still be cleared up.

It makes it feel like she is genuinely doing it for (semi) altruistic reasons. If she had some backhanded scheme, she wouldn't have been likely to throw out hundreds of candidates, because if there are other gods in the background, they would be a lot more likely to notice. They are some humorous bits, though. Interestingly, because they always seem to be '30 years before' or '40 years before', it seems time is counting down to find a reincarnate to kill the hero. I wonder when she will get to look in on Lugh. Right when he's about to fight the hero, maybe.

Anyways. I watched the last two episodes available of that, and episode 6 of Komi-san.

I watched the CG Lupin movie.

Was a little jarring to see the characters in 3D, but it's good fun. Vibes of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Last Crusade.

Well finished off
- rewatching the series for Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Sempai
- Isuca (I'm of a bit of mixed feelings on this, it was ok, but thought the ending a bit off)
- Our Last Crusade (this needed a new season, it really left off on a cliffhanger with a lot unsolved or unanswered...)

I've watched the newest ep of Jobless Reincarnation that came out yesterday (not entirely happy with it, but it was ok)

I finished the first season and the final SP recap episode of 86, and am now on the start of season 2... season 2 is subtitled only currently so will have to get used tot he japanese voices now.

The latest two episodes of Reincarnated Assassin. The latest episode of Komi-san.

There's a really nice, mature sequence in episode 9 of RA between Maho and Lugh, when Maho tells him that she and Tarte are both going to be trying to get him to love them back.

Also, I found this sequence amusing...

I thought that sequence hilarious...

Also... I'm worried about that cliffhanger in the last few seconds of last ep.

I think this implies she is the reincarnated teacher that the goddess interviewed... and that she has been teaching the hero, and that she may well be siding with him against any opposition ... If so, it explains her attitude toward certain questions Lugh asked, and also that the goddess may be working inadvertently creating her own problems.

Finished off rewatching the Misfit at Demon King academy. i've only 2 episodes left of rewatching Daily Life of an Immortal.

Been considering watching the Tokyo High Rise Invasion, but not sure if worth the time, anyone else ever watch that one? Opinions on it?
