Saw 300 too. Was awesome as long as they kept their mouths shut.

Still, can't fault the sacrifices of the 300 and yes, 700 Thebans for standing up to what is, an overwhelming force by today, and at the time, its standards.
Thespians... the thebans laid down their arms.
Damn ancient tribes with similar names. <_<

Saw 300 last night. Was completely bad-ass...when they were dealing with the actual battle. <_< The queen subplot, on the other hand, sucked rotten monkey balls. Not due to the acting though, rather it was that I just didn't care. It took away from the film and burned up time that could have been used to further flesh out the warriors. All to make the women in the audience feel better. (no offence to any reading this)

I actually didn't have that much of a problem with the 'freedom' talk. Mainly cuz slavery is derided in any way shape or form in current society (and rightly so), and it would make identifying with the Spartans easier than if they were the slave-holders and the Persians free.

But they definitely talk too much.

The next film I'm planning on seeing is Curse of the Golden Flower.

It's directed by the bloke who gave us House of Flying Daggers and Hero and has Chow Yun Fat in it.

And let's be honest, he IS one of the coolest people ever to walk the earth.

I just saw Grindhouse last night. Loads of fun. As long as you are expecting the campy style and cheesy lines, it makes the entire experience a hilarious one that you won't mind sitting down for 3 and a half hours for.

Raa, I've had some friends that went to see that. They have told me (all 6 of them) that Curse of the Golden Flower had alot left to be desired.

I plan on seeing Hot Fuzz, Disturbia, and The Invisible.

Oh well. But still, it's Chow Yun Fat, and he is cool.

Y'all need to watch Hard Boiled.

Even if you've already seen it, you need to watch it again :p

Holy...You must get out of the house more, grasshopper.

Nah, really Hard-Boiled is probably one of John Woo's better films, if not the best, including his watered down Amrican stuff, sort of like the Hong Kong Peckinpah I guess. A great movie, almost balletic in it's violence, especailly the gun-violence.

Went and saw Grindhouse this weekend, just kicked butt! Rose McGowan was hot as hell in her roles, and the way things went was like going back in a time machine and taking a trip to the drive-in in the seventies to watch a double bill horror show, Hotty and the blowfish...attack!

(Two owls and a pufferfish start throwing rocks) ;)

Saw Pirates of the Caribbean 3...

*sigh*

It sucked, as expected.

Better than the second, and it DID have its amusing moments, but I honestly wish they had kept it as a single movie. My childhood is being raped by these horrible trilogies!

Last Hollywood movie I've seen, Lord of War on DVD. Good film. Though I stopped it near the end of it admittedly. :unsure!: Well, it's on DVD, so when I feel like watching it, I will. :p

Oh, and before that, Master and Commander. Also on DVD. Also a good film. Granted, have to admit, in terms of story, Master and Commander... not exactly deep by any stretch of the imagination. But eh, still good in its own right.

Went and saw Knocked Up last night; one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. The way the writer depicted the male and female sides of the equation side by side was brilliant.

It was Harry Potter, of course it sucked :p

Went to see Stardust a week or so ago.

Excellent movie. I'm told it fit everything together more neatly than the book (i.e., everyone was more 'happy'), but regardless of any discrepancies, it was very enjoyable.

Curse of the Golden Flower, for anyone who hasn't seen in yet, was basically a big-budget Chinese Shakespearean tragedy: much political intrigue, drama, backstabbing, character deaths and dialogue that requires a translator. So it's an okay film, I guess, if you're into that kinda thing.

I recently went cheap DVD hunting and picked up a copy of Equilibrium, an action movie from a few years back. It's pretty good. Great imagery, nice action, some weak moments of dialogue but that's forgivable in an action film. Strangely, dead bodies never have pooling blood underneath them. The main attraction though is the gun kata fights. Here's one scene to give you an idea:

Also got the extended version of Dune, the old one with Sting in it. Haven't gotten around to watching yet.

Oh God, Equilibrium. I always suggest that people read this SPLICEDwire review instead; it's right on the money. Don't even get me started on Kurt Wimmer's "gun kata" bullshit: the only reason the fight scenes look remotely good -- and then only if you aren't paying attention -- is that he cuts so often that you can't easily see how ludicrous the action is. Such a hack.

Also, re: Dune, unfortunately being "extended" isn't always a good thing. I only wish I had known it before buying the same DVD... -_-

Equilibrium is one of my favorite movies actually, and I'd actually bought it because a friend was running a Stargate RPG campaign and used the world right at the end of the movie. Another friend had figured that out and asked him about it only to get a slight nod.

I bought it and enjoyed it and would probably see a sequal if one was made.

I'm not a Wimmer fan or anything. I hated Ultraviolet. But I still enjoyed Equilibrium. Sure it looks like it had not much of a budget (soldiers with motorcycle helmets?) but it seemed to me they did pretty well with what they had. Yes it's very derivative, just like most everything else these days. Yes the action is not realistic, but it looks stylish, so who cares? It's not like action in movies ever is. It's a lot more believable than having people fall 20 feet and rebound off the surface of a lake by stabbing it with a sword. More believable than using a car to kill a helicopter.

The reviewer there also somehow missed what any idiot should be able to see. When Preston claims he's not feeling, his superiors clearly DON'T buy it. It's obvious Prozium doesn't kill off all emotion, it just numbs them. Sense offenders are killed as a deterrent, and because they'd probably just stop taking the drug again anyway. It's clear that the leaders of government aren't on the drug. And the society is brought to its knees when bombs destroy the Prozium factories, not when the screens are shot.

As for Dune, I figured it would be better to at least see it and then judge whether it was worth getting the thrice as expensive collector's edition. If I don't like it it's no big deal. It was cheaper than the lunch I had that day.

Ultraviolet was pure and simple crap of the highest order. And to me it was even more disappointing because I had, when it was first announced, that it was connected to the TV series of the same name. The lack of pretty much any redeeming quality beyond a few interesting FX shots was almost making me want to claw my eyes out by the half-way point.

Equilibrium was a highly stylized movie that seemed like a twilight zone for the future. It had several interesting points as well that made the characters seem more real in the situation.

@OniGannon: The budget was apparently around $20,000,000. It's low-budget by comparison to something like "Minority Report", but not in the grand scheme of things. It's in the same class as "Underworld" and "Pitch Black".

I'll take your word for it about the review -- it's been a long time since I saw the movie. That bit about staring into the puppy-dog eyes cracks me up, though. :)

Yeah, I bought "Dune" for $5 in the hope that it'd be better on a second viewing. I was expecting a faithful adaptation the first time, so Lynch's artistic license was extremely unwelcome. Might go do that now, actually: thanks for motivating me into finally watching it. ;)
