What are you watching?

So, I saw Alien Covenant earlier.

Hmm... How to give a review without spoiling it?

There are no major surprises in the film as you're watching it. There is one thing I would have done differently, but that's just me. It's at the very end, so I can't go into details.

And one of the trailers did spoiler a late scene.

All in all, better than Prometheus, about as good as Alien³, but not as good as good as Alien or Aliens.

It looks lovely and everyone seems to act sensibly, or at least in comparison to the people in Prometheus.

So, I saw Wonder Woman. Mixed gender screening in 2D.

It's pretty good.

It's long, but we need the origin story. The war segments and the effects of the war are handled well and give some poignant moments as you see people deal with their various traumas.

There's possibly too much slow-mo in it, but over all, I recommend it.

Hopefully, Justice League will be at least as good.

Also, Patty Jenkins should be allowed to make as many of the DCEU movies as she wants to.

So I saw Baby Driver and I recommend it. It's funny and the musical choices are great.

And the car stunts are all practical.

Go see it when it comes out later this month.

Or don't, I'm no the boss of you.

Just saw Spider-Man: Homecoming.

It was as fun as I had hoped, didn't have sky-beams at the end had someone vaguely smart as the villain.

There are two post-movie scenes, the second of which is quite meta.

It doesn't reach the high watermarks of the Captain America sequels, but was still more fun than any live action DCEU movie to date.

I second the recommendation of Spider-man: Homecoming.

I think it's my favorite of the Spider-man films to date, and I feel Tom Holland did a fantastic job of capturing Peters admirable elements and his flaws. It also slots in nicely to the MCU, and had a villain that was vaguely smart with understandable motivations, and human reactions. Some of the casting choices completely caught me off guard, but I felt they worked well.

Saw Despicable 3, not terrible.

The villain is definitely more interesting than the hero.

Dru could best be described as 'a bland version of everything Gru isn't'.

Don't think I'll see it again.

Saw War for the Planet of the Apes and I can recommend it to those who enjoyed the previous two Apes movies.

I can also recommend it if you haven't seen them, as it does have a "new readers start here" bit at the beginning.

Just back from Dunkirk and that is some film.

Solid performances all round, fantastic cinematography and the most tension I've felt in a film for a long, long time.

See it on the big screen, apparently IMAX is the way forward, but that would cost extra.

How was Harry Styles and how much is he in the movie?

Not asking for spoilers, just curious how he did and how much he had to work with.

I wasn't one of the haters who bitched about him being in it. He isn't be the first boy band kid turned actor. That's how we got Justin Timberlake and Mark Wahlberg, both of whom have given some great performances in movies. [...and to be fair, some not so great performances as well.]

So how'd he do?

He was fine. Much better than Ed Sheeran's cameo in Game of Thrones.

Just back from The Hitman's Bodyguard.

It's good, violent, sweary fun with Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson.

Selma Hayek is great, too.

See it when it comes to a theatre near you.

Or don't. I'm not the boss of you.

FINALLY got around to watching Logan. While some friends here say they didn't like it, personally I loved it. It was a great send off for Logan and, hopefully, a preview of things to come for Laura.

Saw Atomic Blonde. It was alright, stylish with some good tunes, but lacking in substance. It's not the "Jane Wick" that some of the trailers might have suggested.

Certainly worth a rental/cheap showing.

They had a 3D screening of Terminator 2 tonight at my local cinema.

It still holds up, both with its narrative and its effects.

Saw Detroit yesterday. Powerful stuff. Worth watching, but not exactly comfortable viewing due to its subject matter.

Saw Lucky Logan earlier today and that's entertaining. Like Ocean's 11, so if that entertained you, you might like this.

I saw it a few days ago too. Still a terrific movie. I didn't really notice the 3D at all though, and like all conversions, the colors were really dulled by the glasses.

The Big Sick was great, and I say that as a person who would like to see Ray Romano run over by a train on most days. Wind River is another great one everyone should check out. Birth of the Dragon was pretty meh. A rental at best.

It

Good job from all involved, everyone brought their A game to this work.

I'm a bit torn now, whether to finish the Novel...or wait and see the sequel first.

Saw American Assassin. It was OK. It felt like a Jack Ryan story with hints of Bourne.

Caught Kingsman: The Secret Service yesterday and the Golden Circle today. They're OK.

There's less class-based snobbishness in the second, but don't go in expecting lots of Channing Tatum.

Watched Baby Driver.

Great heist movie, everyone is on point, and it has an excellent soundtrack.

It's an Edgar Wright movie. Same guy who did Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Ant Man, Land of the Dead, and Scott Pilgrim.

Seriously check this flick out when you get the chance. It's one of his best movies to date.

So, I saw Blade Runner 2049.

I like it. The main plot McGuffin is a bit odd, but I've seen worse.

The production design is excellent.

Ryan Gosling is... Ryan Gosling. Harrison Ford is a grumpy old man in it. Jared Leto makes me think they could have saved a few bucks and gone for Jeffery Coombs. Sure, he's not got the Big Name Factor, but he would bring in the sci-fi crowd.

(Though, the sci-fi crowd are probably already planning to see this)

Score was good, but some of the sound design was a little too loud for some scenes (usually ones with the flying cars).

All in all, see it on the big screen.

But in 2D, not 3D. Not seen anything in 3D worth the extra cost and discomfort, if I'm being brutally honest.

I just finished seeing Blade Runner 2049. I won't give anything away but I will say that as I walked out of the theater, smile on my face, I thought "You've done a man's job, Sir" to both the Caste and Crew and the main character.

Recent views:
American Assassin: worst Bourne movie yet.
American Made: pretty great really. Don't know how close to the truth it skews, but very entertaining.
Kingsman 2: OK, but I liked the first better. Found it odd how much the trailers play up Tatum when he's barely in it. The Statesman guy who is really the third main character isn't even named in the trailer or on any posters I've seen.
It: Great movie, everyone should see it. And I hate horror movies in general because so many are so so dumb.
Logan Lucky: best Oceans # movie by a mile. I can't stress enough how great it was.

Planned for the coming weeks: original Blade Runner followed by the new one, Medea Halloween 2 (first one was surprisingly funny). Maybe Happy Death Day but probably not. Marshall likely, The Foreigner definitely, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women likely, Killing Gunther likely, The Snowman maybe.
