What are you watching?

I'm slowly going through some classic movies this weekend. One thing I didn't expect to learn is that Soylent Green, made in 1973, takes place in the year 2022.

I find it amusing that there is a protein drink called Solyent that's sold in stores now. I'm disappointed by the fact that each of the different flavors are color coded and not one of them is green.

We actually had Harry Harrison come speak with our college science fiction class back in the 70s. He wasn't impressed with what they did to his novel, and said he regretted giving out free advice during production.

So the Artemis Fowl movie has posted to Disney Plus. Being a huge fan of the books, I'm somewhat apprehensive to watch it. Has anyone else who has read the books, seen the movie yet? If so, what did you think?

Local cinema reopened this weekend and have been showing some classic movies. Today, I watched the Back to the Future movies and they still hold up after 30+ years.

One complaint is the train at the end of part 3. It does sort of come out of nowhere, but I understand why they included it. It would be too much of a downer ending to have Marty not be able to say goodbye to Doc.

Money Plane, starring Kelsey Grammer and Thomas Jane.

It's Bad. It's not 'So bad it's good' levels of bad, it's straight up Bad. Fight choreography looks like it was done by the Marx Brothers, and that's being nice. Costume department was 'bring your own'.

It's only worth watching in a situation like 'Rocky Horror' or 'Snakes on a Plane': in a group of people, preferably with beer, and lots of it.

Forgot to mention that I'd seen Tenet the other week. Was pretty good from a visual standpoint, from a plot perspective, it's original.

However, there are issues with the sound mix that meant that some audience members didn't catch all of the dialogue. And it's a film that requires a lot of dialogue to explain what's going on with the mechanics of main premise.

Caught Bill & Ted Face the Music.

It's OK. I wasn't offended by the treatment of the characters or the jokes in the script, but equally, I wasn't blown away by the writing or acting.

It should have been made 10 or 15 years ago, but you know how Hollywood is.

Watched Enola Holmes on Netflix... it actually seemed quite good... liked it.

Watched The Foreigner on Netflix. Ever since I saw the trailer of it, I've been itching to see it, and I was not disappointed.

Since the last time I posted to this thread, I actually did watch Artemis Fowl. While not as bad as I feared, it wasn't as good as I hoped. The movie essentially mashed the plots of the first two books into one movies, essentially making the movie (and any further installments) their own continuities. In fact, I don't see how they could continue to go along with the book series plots beyond vague nods to them. While the characters are likeable, many don't match up well with their book-verse counterparts. I'll probably watch the 2nd movie, should they decide to go ahead with it, but the growing inconsistencies between the books and the movies are likely to get Percy Jackson level of bad going forward.

I watched Kick-Ass and Kick-Ass 2 for the first time. The first movie does a nice take on 'superheroes in reality' and doesn't pull punches on Dave getting beat up multiple times as Kick-Ass, or having him temporarily retire because he's scared of getting killed. The second movie is a lot more lacking in direction, but Mindy's subplot in that movie is incredibly well-done.

I watched 6 Underground.

There are some really nice setpieces and stuntwork in the film (some insane parkour!), and the rest of it is meh to outright drudgery. Ryan Reynolds is in full force with the douchebag protagonist archetype who verbally abuses other that he seems to love to play, which doesn't help one bit in this movie when essentially every other protagonist is more interesting than his.

I watched Star Trek: Beyond a little while back.

Huh...since when did the Star Trek films start becoming highly-choreographed action films in space?

2009, when JJ Abrams was brought in to reboot the franchise.

I finally watched Kill Bill V1 and V2. I meant to years ago, but Netflix didn't have them on at the time and I couldn't be arsed to try harder. I did now.

Definitely lots of style to the film, and I only really saw one bit of Tarantino's foot fetish (the part where the Bride is breaking out of the hospital and getting to the pussy wagon, and trying to get her feet to move). The fight versus the Crazy 88s has some crazy awesome choreographing, too.

Not so much watching it, but I realised that there must be people in real life who actually died 7 days after watching The Ring. Not from the curse, of course, but just from the sheer number of people who would've watched it and statistics that some of them must have died shortly thereafter.

It must be...interesting if you were in a superstitious family and somebody actually did die 7 days later.

Not watching now, but I did watch it when it first came out. Zoolander 2 is an odd movie in that basically the only good part is the first 3 minutes of the movie, when Justin Bieber gets pumped full of lead.

Watched Spider-Man's Into the Spider-Verse and Far From Home on Netflix.

Spider-Verse was actually pretty good. Far From Home was...decent if uninspiring...but that ending...ouch.

My niece is watching High School Musical on DVD.

I cannot believe it's been fifteen years since it premiered. Ironically, I've never watched any of the movies, though I was aware of the spread of the cultural phenomenon.

I never saw it, though I certainlyy heard of it. Was it anything like either Rock 'n' Roll High School or Rock 'n' Roll High School 2 Forever? Or for that matter the far more popular Grease and Grease 2?

Sorry, but I've never seen the Rock 'n' Roll High School movies. In fact, I still haven't watched High School Musical the whole way through either--I just noticed my niece in front of the TV while passing through the living room. But between what I've seen online and the glimpses I caught, I'll give a tentative "yes, HSM does follow that formula."

The Dark Knight was released in the US on this day 13 years ago. So, I thought, why not a re-watch?

It also reminded me why I still believe that filming a third movie just for completion as a trilogy was a waste.
