What do you name your characters in RPGs?

Here's my favorite renaming in FF7:

Cloud= Clod
Tifa= Tita
Barret= Baracus
Red XIII= Furry
Cid= Smoker
Vincent= Emofag
Yuffie= Hyper
Aeris= Kebab

In FF8, I usually rename Squall 'Jackass', and Griever 'Dildo' (which brought some AMUSING moments when Ultimecia summoned 'Dildo' :rofl: ).

In FF6, I once renamed Celes 'Mills'. Just so she'll say the line "I used to be General Mills, but now I'm just a common traitor."

And in Chrono Cross (ew), I recently started naming Fargo 'Bradley', since he looks like King Bradley.

FF9.

Renamed Aramat 'Fag.'

Just so I can see him say "I'm known as the Flaming Fag."

If they have assigned names, I usually keep them, but I'll give them proper capitalization if needed and allowed. If they don't have assigned names, I just use whatever I feel like at that moment; in one of my Secret of Mana slots I have the boy named Terry, the girl is Leona, and the sprite is Jinx. Of course, SoM doesn't recognize letter cases, so it's really TERRY, LEONA, and JINX, but whatever.

Aeris = Kebab. Heh, that was worth a good chuckle. Chrono Cross, ugh. It was mediocre as a stand alone but as a sequel it truly sucked IMO. My copy's been collecting dust since my first playthrough.

I generally either keep the names to defaults (cause I'm horrible at thinking up names/titles/etc) though sometimes just for the hell of it I'll substitue names from the Anime/Other game that has my attention at the moment. I think I once went through FF7 and gave em all names from Ranma 1/2.

I usually just keep the names as they are given. Although when I'm feeling weird I do mess around with 'em. I recall renaming Cecil in FF4 to "Golbez" just for the line of when the two meet.

"Ah, so you are Golbez," "...And you are Golbez."

Also, I did the same with Cloud in FF7, but that was more confusing most of the time then amusing, since Sephiroth comes up enough in conversation that you can get messed up. Also, in FF7 I did mockeries of people's names in it. Cloud to Clown, Barret to Barrel, etc. I also recall calling Red-XIII, Nanaki instead, at one point. ^^;;

*maims horribly*

In FFT I renamed Ramza to Yoshitsune (after Minamoto Yoshitsune) and then hired a bunch of characters named after famous samurai and ninja (like Shingen, Kenshin, and Hanzo) and went through the game with an all-samurai/ninja party.

In WoW my main character, an Undead Warrior, is named Yorik after both Hamlet's Yorick and yorik coral from Star Wars. My Undead Rogue is named Shaedo, a version of the name Shedao (as in Shedao Shai, the Yuuzhan Vong commander in Dark Tide I & II), my Undead Warlock is named Githra (after another random Yuuzhan Vong), and my Undead Priest is named Latkje (after Nash Latkje from Suikoden). Riina, another Undead Rogue who appears in several WoW fics I'm writing (including one that's a crossover with Love Hina) is also named after a Yuuzhan Vong, and Ballandra the Undead Mage is named after one of Iragination's MMX characters.

My penname, Gafgar, stems from that time I tried to renname Cecil in FFIV to Gafgarion from FFT. Gafgar Adolis, an original character who appears in an original novel I'm writing on (as well as making various cameos in some of my fanfics), was originally named Gafgar Adol until I changed his last name to Adolis, a move inspired by a certain "Dark Adonis" in Disgaea.

hmm... (re)naming characters huh?

on average i keep the default names... but if i feel attached to any game i tend to use random names or experiment a little with friends and acquaintances names

I remember once i was bored and named ffvi's characters to xmen if i remember correctly:
* Sabin - Havok
* Edgar - Cyclops
* Celes - Rouge
* Locke - Gambit
* Gau - Morph
* Terra - Jean
* Shadow - Logan
* Relm - Jubilee
(i cant really remember the rest)

Another time i was playing Chrono Trigger and decided to play around with names
* Chrono - Jaice
* Luca - Lucia
* Marle - Myria
* Frog - Kayin
* Ayla - Yahra
* Robo - ED209
* Magus - Sasha

Hnn, if they have a default I usually just go with that, but if you absolutely have to choose one I usually just go with whatever I'm currently using as my online screen name currently, now it's Israfel, before this it was Necraa, if this board had started a few months earlier I would have been 'Necraa' and not 'Israfel'.

I always tend to give my RPG characters very innocuous English names, such as Trevor Harcourt, or Alice Trule (pronounced Truly)

Of course, military types get surnames like "Battledon" or "Warsley".

I usually keep the names at their defaults, but in NIS games where you create your own characters, I go buck wild. Usually end up naming them after anime characters.

I have two Ronins named Motoko and Tsuruko. My choice of names for my Red, Blue, and Green female mages (Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu, respectively) made my friend smack his face into the wall.
He retaliated by naming his Iron Golem (I think that's what they're called) Alphonse.
I countered with a Nekomata named Sanada, a Succubus named Camilla, and a Dragon by the name of TROGDOR (all caps included).

I won. :)

I'm totally naming my dragon mount in Seika that.

The first time I played through the Famicom FF3, my characters were Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny.

I keep the original names if only to make it less confusing when I talk to other people about the game.
My DnD name right now is Xellos DarkMatter

I usually tend to keep the assigned names. A few times, if I'm board, I might change it to something somewhat offensive, just to see them say it. For example...

NPC: "So your name is?"

Character: "Shithead"

NPC: "Shithead? Sounds like a strong tough name!"

:rofl:

For the longest time I only renamed the main character with my name, more for distinguising between saves then anything else. Then in FF3 is where I first started changing names. Nothing quite as fun as everyone here however. I would change certain characters names to my best friends. Locke was Jeffery, Sabin was Justin, Edgar as Joe and Shadow as Bob.. which was me.

Since then I rarely have changed names these days. If I do, I go with a derivative of Bob, Lunarian or Hiro... from Lunar 2.

In fact the only time I've played a game with an offensive name was when I rented Dragon Warrior 2 from a rental store. I looked at the saved turn and it said 'ASSH'. I had no clue what that was, then I went into it and the first guy greets me like 'Welcome ASSHOLE'. It was hilarious to me at the time, my brother and I got a long laugh out of it.

In NIS strategy games, I tend to give most 'human' characters the names of either anime characters or rpg characters, while I give the 'monster' characters very normal names (George, Mark, Ryan, etc). Sometimes I'll throw in a Juan or a Miguel to spice it up a bit.

Frog from Chrono Trigger was always named 'Pimp' and Robo was always 'Busta'.

Renamed Aramat 'Fag.'
Me too! Technically I called him 'Faggot' but same difference.

I do remember some good ones from FF7 that me or my cousin used in our saved games.

Cloud - STINKYPEE
Red XIII- JOHNSMITH
Yuffie - NINJA HOE
Vincent - YANNI or Vinciento (Vincent with a little latin flava)

KOTOR

Female: 'The Bitch'
Male: 'A Very Evil Man' or 'Rrrrraul' (only if he has a tan face)
