It's well known that Shinobu calls Keitaro "Sempai". But I'm not too sure what she calls everyone else. Does anyone know if she has a nickname for Motoko? Or does she just call her "Motoko-san" ?

For that matter, can someone also list the nicknames used by the different cast? Most importantly, please mention who all call them with a nickname?

-chronodekar

PS - I know "Sempai" is NOT a nickname, and it's a form of respect, but I think you understand the intent of my question, regardless.

You know, that's a good question. Just wondering for general reasons, or are you planning a Shinobu/Motoko fic?

Since we appear to be simulating letter writing, I will answer this in a few days. To better simulate letter travel time.

Doesn't she call Motoko "sempai" as well?

I think she just calls her 'Motoko-san' or just 'Motoko.'

Keitaro usually refers to her as 'Motoko-chan.'

reading some old scans, I'm noticing somethign interesting about Keitaro's speech.

For example, he refers to Motoko and Shinobu with -chan, Mutsumi as 'mutsumi-san' , kitsune as Kitsune-san, and Naru as 'Narusagawa-san'. this is rigtht during the vol 7 holiday arc.

Seems like he was treating Naru quite formally, and the others in more relaxed tones of voice.

Mutsumi, int he same volume, refers to him as Urashima-san or Urashima-kun, while Naru just calls him Keitaro.

My personal take on Shinobu is that she calls the other girls "[Name]-sempai", but refers to Keitaro just as "Sempai".

 Not really a pairing that crossed my mind. But in answer - no. It's for my current fic, "Ronin & Sophomore".

It's interesting what you mentioned about Keitaro. My take on it, is that for people he's in a casual relationship with, he uses the "-chan" suffix.

With regards to Naru & Mutsumi, considering that either could have been his "promised" girl, he probably wanted to demonstrate some amount of respect, hence "-san".

And as far as Kitsune goes, she's probably taught him that she'd tease mercilessly when he calls her "-chan", so on the safe side, he probably sticks to "-chan".

Now, returning to the OP question, I think it's going to be a toss up between Motoko-san or Motoko-sempai.

Will decide as fic progresses.

Thanks for all your replies folks!

Actually, reading the scans, she does both, calling them ether name-sempei, last name sempai, and just sempai.

Random note: Motoko uses a attack on keitaro in vol 4 called 'hundred Petal Chaos'. She also uses 'Skybreaker Slash' against Tama-chan, and a 'rockbreaker sword' atgain keitaro...wow, I had forgotten she had so many attacks.

Also, the boiler and pumps for the hotsprings are literally in a cave beneath the sou. I had forgotten about that.

Yeah, Shinobu typically calls someone other than Keitaro or Suu, (name)-sempai. Keitaro is very often Sempai, and Suu is Suu to everyone...

For Suu, its Keitaroos, and, if I remember correctly, everyone else she just called by name, or Kitsune.

For Motoko, its Urashima, Konno-san once in a while or Mitsune-san or Kitsune, Naru-san, Shinobu-chan, Suu, and Mutsumi-san.

For Naru, it was baka, Kitsune, Shinobu-chan, Suu, and turtle-lady.

For Kitsune, Keitaro, lover-boy (once or twice i think), sugah, hon, Naru, and turtle-lady or watermelon-lady and Motoko was kendo-girl when she was in fury-mode.

For Keitaro, it was that for people he's in a casual relationship with, he uses the "-chan" suffix.
With regards to Naru & Mutsumi, considering that either could have been his "promised" girl, he probably wanted to demonstrate some amount of respect, hence "-san". Interestingly, Suu is referred to throughout the manga as Suu, her surname, rather than her given name, and it SEEMS from a casual reader's perspective that the cast thought her name was Suu Koalla (in American form) or Koalla, Suu (in Japanese form), and if I remember correctly, the cast was made to realize that her last name is Suu and not Koalla, and they just kept on referring to her as Suu out of habit...

@kevinasher,

Thanks for those. Will be useful for me.

... though, :hmm: with regards to Keitaro talking to Naru/Mutsumi/Kitsune you *could* have quoted me.

Or did you really write that on your own? A bit too familiar with my own post on the matter...

Nevertheless, thanks again for the rest of it!

I don't see Naru referring to Mutsumi as Turtle lady in my scans, nor do I see her only referring to Keitaro as 'Baka' outside of when she is angry.

I first read it as the manga, and I borrowed them from a friend; I could have just misremembered...

Off the top of my head (and I'm pretty sure I'm repeating stuff already said but), Shinobu tends to call her older friends {name}-sempai. Mostly as a term respect to denote a strong sense of admiration toward some quality they posses that she wishes she had (Naru's beauty queen looks and book smarts; Kitsune's shameless confidence, undeniable hotness and adult flare; Motoko's elegance, poise, "no nonsense" aura).

As for Kaolla... there was a plot in one of the anime episodes where this was actually pointed out by her and was promptly addressed. Fanon-wise, depending on the writer and the tone of the story; if the story is set farther up in the story and they're buddies, Shinobu calls her Kaolla, otherwise Suu-chan.

With Keitaro, as commented before, she just calls him Sempai; originally because she was impressed with him being in TouDai and to denote HE was HER UPPERCLASSMAN, until the Hina Girls found out about the misunderstanding and blasted him for it; although once it got resolved, she kept calling him that as she noticed his tenacity and never give up attitude.

She pretty much calls anyone else {name}-san. She maintains the polite respect to others just as much as she wants it returned. She doesn't seem to mind being called Shinobu-chan, unless she feels she's being mocked and/or treated like a little kid.
