I was just reading the last chapter of "<a href='http://www.ficwad.com/story/103141' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>Thoughts of Pudding</a>" by Brion64 and I was thinking what does Dumbledore being defeated by Emma Granger (Hermione's mother, a muggle) mean for ownership of the Elder Wand?
What if any muggle knocks out a wizard with the Elder wand and then takes it from them?

In the story Dumbledore is holding them at wand point to try to get Harry back under control when Emma Granger offers to talk things out over tea. He sits down and she brings a serving tray. He doesn't see a muggle as a threat as she starts to serve tea until she suddenly and without warning slams the tea tray on his head with all her might, giving him a concussion. She grabs his wand and throws it away while he's dazed.

Does that mean that a muggle is now the master of the Elder Wand? Even if that isn't used in the story, how would it affect the canon Elder Wand?

There is no reason to believe it will function differently from any other wand, in that it requires magic to work. In the hands of a Muggle it should just be a stick.

So does that mean it's power would be broken or would it simply wait for another master with magic to come along? Because that premise is no worse than some of the other convoluted schemes I've seen cooked up by authors to explain how Harry should've gotten rid of the death stick.

I'd think it would be in a "holding pattern", that is to say, waiting until a wizard/witch claimed it again.

Would the person attempting to claim the Elder Wand have to defeat the Muggle if Muggle was the one who defeated the previous Wielder? That could be an odd twist. Even stranger might be if the Elder didn't care if the new wielder was a wizard or witch and MADE them one after they claim it.

I'm now thinking it's unlikely that the Elder Wand would even recognize that it's been taken by someone without magic, given that it's possible to be the master of the wand without ever claiming it (Draco Malfoy) and that having it in your possession and successfully using it does not mean you're its master (Voldemort).

But this is all just speculation anyhow.
