What is the obession with self-insert fanfiction or re-writting a movie into a fanfic? I'm not hating people that write them, I just don't understand the fad they also tend to just take what one major character would say and make themselves say it. I'm just as confused by those that take the time and effort to write the entire plot of a movie add in a cross over character and have that character just say the lines of a major character. Just why?

An example; I was reading a Star Wars, Doctor Who crossover. The fic took place in A New Hope. The 7th doctor and Rose eventually makes their to Luke's house, after R2-D2 runs away the doctor uses his sonic screw driver to help find the droid and just starts rehashing things Obi-Wan would say. The sad thing is that these and self-inserts tend to be wildly popular. Why?

Purely wish-fulfillment. "wouldn't it be awesome if I was in said character's place?" "wouldn't it be even better/make more sense if said character was in that place and did that instead of the canon one to do it?"
