Naruto What You Want To Read In Naruto

What kind of idea for a Naruto fic have you seen or thought of that makes you think, "Man, I'd love to read this"?

It might have never been done before and you'd really like to read such a story. Or it might have been done before but the story didn't focus on the right parts, was poorly written or got abandoned. Regardless, what idea do you want to see written and written well?

For myself, there's three story concepts I'd really like to see:

1) Minato as the main character who's survived the Kyuubi and continued to reign as Hokage.

2) Naruto with Wood, Ice or Lava Release.

3) Naruto, Sasuke, Lee and Neji have been put on the same team and take on a dangerous adventure filled with asskicking and bromance.

RE: What You Want To Read

I'd like to see a good naruto apprenticed by Orochimaru fic.

Most of them end up being Naruto In Name Only (of which some are good, such as Ouroboros). Nah, I want something like Uprooted, where ninja jesus gets trained by orochimaru while slowly converting his entire command structure under his nose.

^ That. "Uprooted," Orochimaru style, would be amazing.

I think sparrowette did something similar with Kabuto in the first part of his/her (but probably her judging by the "ette") Naruto series.

RE: What You Want To Read

At this point, I'm on crossovers.

Vanilla stories are good and all, but like 99.99% of them never even get to Shippuden and a whole lot of them just do the same shit in different ways. Its getting real hard to innovate nowadays, from what I've been seeing. Not that innovation is really required per say, but its nice to not just read the same shit over and over again.

Pairings wise....rarer pairings pls. Well, less "rare" and more not Hinata/Sakura/Ino.

I wanted to write that Lava!Naruto fic we discussed a lot a while back Knight, but really, it ended up being just as I said. It never really got off the ground. :(

Honestly by this point I am sick of anything even near the stations of canon and I'm well past the stage when i would read substandard fics for my Naruto fixs. It needs to truely good and orginal for me.

RE: What You Want To Read

I need a Bro!'ruto fic. Doesn't matter if its vanilla or a crossover. And I'd like for him to retain the goofiness/silliness without slipping into full-retard. Like, his bros. would facepalm and try and get him back on the right track, he'd remain oblivious, wacky hijinks ensue, and yet everything would still manage to work itself out in the end.

Another one I'd like to see is StreetRat!Naruto trying to make something of himself. Starts out with no goals save survival and getting the finer things in life, but evolves into a kind of Anti-hero (I'm sorry...blame the recent influx of Star-Lord and GotG fics). Can be with or without a bijuu sealed in him. But sans Bijuu would take a lot of work, because Kyuubi defines Naruto just as much as the Sharingan defines Sasuke.

With the direction the manga went in (and most fanfic authors), I'm not really in the mood for Grimderp, Masksâ„¢, or super-secret-convoluted-political-machinations. I just want something lighthearted and funny with just enough drama or conflict thrown in to make it interesting.

Wow, I've never gotten to that point ever.

I don't know if I just turn off my quality filter entirely at a certain point, but I can enjoy a decent number of fics a few other here wouldn't.

I mean, if it's complete crap, then no, not going to happen. If it's full of spelling and grammatical errors, then also not going to happen.

It helps that I enjoy fics where the main characters are OP, provided at least some of the enemies can stand a chance.

I've read many fics where authors go in the complete opposite direction and have nothing go right for the main character ever in history that I actually dislike those kinds of fics more. Hardship is nice and all, but it too often goes into angst (which I despise) and very often it gets massively overdone. Grimderp is pretty apt.

"I just want something lighthearted and funny with just enough drama or conflict thrown in to make it interesting." < Kind of this.

I've been begging for a bro!ruto fic for ages and ages. It very rarely happens.

I get that too. I think fics that are doing "twist on canon changes things" should either skip the parts that are the same (wave arc, chuunin exams, etc) because there usually are, and just get straight to part where major changes start happening, or make the change major enough that canon never really happens.

My one issue with the first approach is if you want your story to be readable to someone who isn't a fan of Naruto and doesn't know what it is, you can run into trouble.

I get that, I just don't care. Story A may be objectively better than Story B because it is a stand alone work of literature but that doesn't mean I have any desire to read it.

RE: What You Want To Read

I'm pretty tired of the fics that spend way to much time on part one. I mean, there are a few fics that are 600 words in and haven't even finished the Chunin exams.

I like long fics. But not that long. Thats "will never finish. Ever." territory.

Edit: I don't like outright skipping arcs, but just speed through them. Get them out of the way. 1 chapter, 2, 3 if it's a really long arc... That kind of thing. Just get it finished. Make it detailed, don't just be lazy. Make it long if you have a lot to fit in, but seriously. Just get it out of the way and move on.

Eh, I've gotten to the point where I'll just drop the fic if its been over 50k words and they're still on the Chunnin exam. That is, 50k if they don't "flesh out" the wave country arc...if they do, I don't even look at word count, I'm out.

Come to think of it, nowadays I prefer to read fics that start after TS, unless they're really well done or AU (The Howling Wind, Konoha's ANBU, etc.)

It'd be nice to see more stories that start after Part 1, regardless of whether any changes have been made before then or not. Drop me in media res and introduce me to any divergences as we go along.

I'd expect any fanfic writer to assume that their reader has seen/read the source material. Going out of their way for people who don't know anything about the fandom they're writing for just seems weird.

RE: What You Want To Read

I'd think I'd be OK if the fight scenes didn't just follow the same old tired formula. Like, in the wave arc, Naruto might have different team-mates, or be stronger and more "bad-ass," but 99 times out of a hundred:

  1. Kakashi will get caught in a Water Prison.
  2. Naruto will break him out (with or without help.)
  3. Haku will put Zabuza in a false death state.
  4. Kakashi will collapse from chakra exhaustion.
  5. One week will pass with Tree Climbing training (that Naruto will probably already know how to do.)
  6. Naruto will meet Haku (who will probably be female.)
  7. Zabuza will attack the bridge one week later.

Yawn.

How about mixing it up for once. How about Zabuza deflects a Kunai Naruto throws at him towards Kakashi, and then Kakashi deflects said Kunai right at Haku's hiding spot, forcing him to abandon it? Should Haku join the fight against Team 7 there and then, or should he continue the pretense, and "pursue" Zabuza when he "flees?"

Mix up the Chuunin exam fights for combinations that we've never or rarely seen before! Have people who lost in the preliminaries in canon make it to the finals, and figure out ways they could train, and new stuff they could learn, in the month period before the finals!

I agree.

Hell, one of the best (in my recent memories) Chuunin exams I've read was Darmethius's Never Trust a Rattle Snake, and really I'd re-read it just for Hinata owning the shit out of Sasuke in a hilarious way

If we're talking about the Zabuza fight...

There's practically a fanfiction law that states if you change canon by bringing more fighters to a battle, the opposition will also have more fighters. So add on Team 8 or Team 10, and Zabuza has another apprentice. Add on Team 8 AND Team 10, Zabuza comes with 3 allies.

I want someone to run with gag and deploy basically every bloody top ninja in Konoha, up to and including the Hokage, Tsunade and Jiraiya somehow someway, and in turn Zabuza ends up bringing the Kirigakure rebel forces and half of Akatsuki with him.

Why? Cuz Wave is serious business.

The only reason I brought it up is that I think a lot of people view writing fanfiction as practice for some original work they'll cook up later. So they want their project to stand on its own, and not have to reference knowledge of a series, because that sort of reference wouldn't work in an original work.

RE: What You Want To Read

As far as the wave thing goes, I remember reading a fic a long long long time ago where Naruto finds & knocks out Haku, using her, yes her, as leverage to make Zabuza surrender and them+team seven ending up fighting Kakuzu + Hidan, who Gato hires to off them. Don't remember the name thought.

I think I remember that. Naruto punches (or blasts, or something) Hidan right out of Wave country.

It does sound like Drifting, minus the knocking Haku out and using her as leverage part.

Now that's a story I'd like redone better. I felt like it had a lot of potential but had some odd parts and took a wrong turn or two.

Heh, I almost dropped it because I thought it was being "redone." I was reading most of it in one go, and couldn't see the date that particular chapter had been posted on.

What parts struck you as odd or wrong? For me, the whole sakura plot line always gave me mixed feelings.

The way Naruto's entire personality could literally be summed up as "cold-blooded scientist" and it's in a way that I can't feel any connection to his canon self at all. It's a different personality for a different environment, of course, but I think it could have been done better. His character design in the story is weird too like his long hair, unnaturally pale skin, snake scales and not-quite-skin, and his clothing that is justified by needing the extra space despite Orochimaru, who has the same abilities, doing just fine with his own. I get why they're there but it feels unnecessary.

Minato dressing down his ANBU Commander in front of a bunch of foreign, potentially hostile ninja was dumb, as was that same bunch being given power equal to the clans that had been around since Konoha's founding. Then Naruto gets shipped off to Kirigakure to screw Mei where the only redeeming quality of that relationship was the novelty since I thought that it's actual development was cringeworthy. I think I lost interest around the time Orochimaru's voice showed up out of nowhere.

I could probably go on for longer if I double-checked the story but that's the gist. I guess I'm another person who'd like to see a quality fic with Naruto as Orochimaru's apprentice.

RE: What You Want To Read

I've always wanted to see a fic along the lines of this, where Naruto had to take up the role of Konoha's spymaster in Jiraiya's place / ends up becoming more like Jiraiya, where he feels/realizes that he could do more good for Konoha by remaining outside the village, stomping out the small brush fires before they turn into infernos.

I would love to see a viginette-type fic series, showing snapshots of his life, taking on jobs, talking to contacts, occasionally running into his old friends...
