I've decided to borrow from Lord Raa's habit of publishing parts of the chapters as I work on them, so this will be my new Ranma fic's WiP prologue thread. Yes, I am becoming an evil fiend like him. Or maybe I was all along, and you never knew it.

Anyway, without further ado... here's what I have so far of my fic's prologue!

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

(A/N: Well... normally, I wouldn't work on the Ranma universe. It tends to be overdone, and while it is one of the series with the most potential for crossovers, I generally feel uncomfortable writing for this fanndom, which is why I never published anything for it.

That is, until today. Blame the evil plot bunnies. They gnawed at my shins until I caved in and decided to get to work on this idea they quietly planted in my mind. Evil creatures, those plot bunnies, I tell ya.

Anyway, this is a mild crossover between Ranma 1/2 and several other series, with Ranma 1/2 being the main focus. Most series will only have a cursory mention, cameos here and there, but some will have an active role. Which ones, you ask? Hehehe, not telling. That'd spoil the surprise. I can tell you, however, that you'll likely see cameos from several obscure series such as Ghost Sweeper Mikami, Compiler and Kukla... and if you never heard of those series, don't be surprised. They ARE obscure, not to mention two of them are in manga form only.

Warning: this is NOT a RxA fic, so if that's your thing, don't bother harassing me with requests to make it RxA. Also, there'll be an OC who will grow pretty close to Ranma, although she (yes, another fine lady) will cause more problems than she'll fix due to how she acts. So you have been warned.

Now, on with the fic!)

DISCLAIMER:

Ranma 1/2 and all its characters are property of Takahashi Rumiko, and I don't claim ownership of them, though I sure as hell would LIKE to. The character of the Dragonmaiden Rachel Feobane is my personal creation, as are the Dragon God-Empress Serina Feobane, the Dragon Nation, the Dragonian race, their language and any other original characters and locations that may pop up in the future. Any and all guest characters are copyright of their own creators.

Prologue: A Maiden From A Faraway Land

There are times when the simplest choice has vast, life-changing consequences. Something as simple as choosing stop and enjoy the scenery instead of pressing on...

...or choosing to go further north instead of turning back.

One such choice was made by one Genma Saotome, accompanied by his five-years old son, Ranma. The result of that choice would forever change young Ranma's life...

Japan, ten years ago

"Papa, where are we? It's cold here," little Ranma asked his bespectacled parent. Genma grunted, refusing to admit he had no clue where exactly in Hokkaido they were at the moment.

Ranma had a point. It had gotten extremely cold, even by Hokkaido winter standards, and for as far as he could see around himself, there were nothing but rocks, snow and more rocks. Even Genma could feel the cold, and he decided that they urgently needed to find a cave to stop in before the wind picked up and froze them to death.

Scanning the landscape around him, Genma spotted a small cave on the side of a hill to his left. A cursory glance ascertained that it was large enough to house them, their equipment and a small fire to keep them warm.

Genma decided that it would be best to spend the night there, safe from the freezing cold. Then, they could retrace their steps back to civilization the next day. He briefly considered starting the specialized training he had read about in his book of forbidden arts, but decided against it, mainly because there were no cats around, and also because the thought of staying in this cold place for however long it took Ranma to learn the Neko-ken was not an appealing thought.

"Come on, boy. We'll camp in that cave over here," he said. Ranma nodded and followed him to the opening in the rocky wall.

As they entered the cave, Genma caught a strange aura lingering in the air. It felt much like a human's, but there was an odd inhuman quality to it. Scanning the ground, he noticed the remains of a campfire. So there's someone in the vicinity, he thought as he noticed the coals were still warm.

After he and Ranma set their bags down and made sure no dangerous creatures lurked in the back of the cave, Genma went out to gather somewhat dry wood to ignite a fire, warning Ranma to not leave the safety of the cave. Due to the copious amounts of snow in the area, finding wood that would actually catch fire instead of producing a cloud of smoke took longer than expected.

As Genma returned to the cave with two armfuls of more or less dry twigs, he blinked. A small amount of smoke was coming out of the cave, along with the telltale reddish glow of a small fire. The portly martial artist set the firewood down and cautiously approached the cave, just in case whoever was inside had hostile intentions and had taken Ranma hostage. Hopefully the boy has enough common sense to not trust the first stranger with dubious intentions that comes along, he thought - which, given his own questionable morality, would have sounded somewhat ironic to anyone who actually knew him.

The bespectacled man slowly crept closer to the poening, and prepared to dash in, grab Ranma and the packs and run for it, when a strange-sounding, nearly growling voice came out of the cave.

"Come in, human. I have no ill will towards you."

Genma blinked. He was sure he had repressed his chi perfectly, yet whoever was inside the cave - a male, by the sound of his voice - had detected him with no trouble whatsoever. After a brief debating, greed and curiosity won over cowardice - anyone who could detect him so casually while he was hiding had to be a martial artist of a very high level, and perhaps he could... persuade... them to share some of their Arts with him and Ranma.

Entering the cave, he noticed Ranma sitting besides a newly built fire, and two figures - one big and apparently male, the other small and childlike, possibly female - sitting next to him. Then he got a good look at the two newcomers, and suddenly began to reconsider the wisdom in accepting the voice's invitation.

The girl, who looked to be about a couple years older than Ranma, was a pretty little thing: long chestnut hair flowing over her shoulders, bright, penetrating green eyes and a pale, almost doll-like skin. She wore a white gi and red hakama, almost as if she were a Shinto priestess, and her lithe frame was covered by a beautiful fur coat, a copy of which Genma noticed on Ranma's shoulders. However, her decidedly inhuman nature was given away by her snake-like eyes, the small patch of scales covering what little of her neck he could see and, moe importantly, the dragon-like horns protruding from the sides of her head, slightly above her small, pointed ears.

The girl's companion, which Genma assumed was the one who had been addressing him, was however far more sinister. He had arms, legs, a head and eyes. That is as far as his likeness to a human went. The creature was covered in hard-looking bronze scales, with the chest area being a lighter color than the rest, and a menacing dragonlike head with wicked-looking fangs topped his impressive, muscular frame, with only a blue loincloth, leather bracers and iron leggings as clothes covering his body. A long, broad tail and a pair of leathery wings protruding from his back completed the unexpected guest's draconic appearance.

Genma swallowed loudly as both newcomers looked him over, feeling a lump in his throat. The dragonlike creature looked strong enough to grind him into dust without even breaking a sweat, and if those wings actually worked, he very much doubted he'd be able to outrun him. As he tried to come up with a safe way to flee, he briefly considered just leaving Ranma behind. He could always hide from Nodoka, and living off his son's skills would be very hard if he was too dead to do so.

Before he could make his mind up one way or the other, the little girl spoke up.

With such a fine upstanding member of the community as a rolemodel? Perish the thought! ;D

Seems otherwise fine to me and looks very promising. Always been a fan of fantasy in general and dragons in particular. And when they grow up to be hot dragon/human girls, well, then I'm all for it! :p~

Thank you. *crunches the typos*

As for Genma's thoughts, yeah, they are a wee bit ironic considering who is thinking them, heh.

Oh, let me add a few things. I made a mini glossary of terms and backstory for this fic, including the rudiments of Draconian language. Here goes:

Zin 'na: A soulmate A zin 'na's experiences, be they physical or emotional, reflect on their mate, sometimes causing severe emotional distress in case of traumatic events.

Zin 'na Kalon: literally, 'Soulmate Bond'. It's the ritual used to bind two souls for life, and is executed by having the two prospected mates cut off a part of their own flesh, infuse it with a part of their soul through a magical incantation and then offer it to their mate as food. By allowing their mate to consume a part of them, the lifemate simbolically affirms their willingness to place their whole beings in their hands, to do with as they see fit.

Shou 'k Nadol: 'Starborne Child', the name the Draconians give themselves. It is believed that Draconians descend from the Star Dragon God, Harsgalt, who gave birth to the first Draconians by smashing a star into pieces and breathing life and a soul into the shattered remains. It should be noted that Draconians aren't originary of this Earth - they came from another dimension, known as 'Legendra', after a Dark God named Madruk awoke, enslaved and nearly caused the extinction of their race. Yes, this is a reference to the Saturn RPG 'Dragon Force'. :p

Gou't Tara: literally, 'Dance of Death' or 'Killing Dance'. A style used by halberdiers in the Dragon Nation, and based on overwhelming power and crushing the opponent's defenses. Rachel is a mistress of it, making fighting her a mortally dangerous affair.

Gou' da Dendaroo: literally, 'Dance of the New Sun', the halberd-based fighting style used by Rachel Feobane. It is a dance-like style that employs wide sweeps and sudden changes of direction in the attack to throw off an opponent and break through their defense. Whereas the Killing Dance' is based on sheer power and overwhelming the enemy, the 'Dance of the New Sun' is based on speed and grace

Kosonath 'rab Taro: there is no literal translation for this term, though the closest thing in human language is 'Armageddon Fist'. It is the unarmed fighting style used in the Dragon Nation, and Ranma learned some of its attacks during the few months he stayed with the Tribe. However, it is a heavily land-based style, thus limiting its usefulness as part of the air-base Saotome Musabetsu Kakuto Ryuu that Ranma uses. Nevertheless, it is quite powerful. Rachel knows the basics of it, though she is rather lacking in unarmed combat due to her preference of the halberd, which she learned to use when she was six.

Nomo' o Dionn 'lin Lyden: literally, 'Eternal Earth Kingdom', the name Draconians give to the Dragon Nation. It is a mostly underground-based league of city-states led by the God-Dragon Empress Serina Feobane, where the 'Starborne Children' live, though a couple of minor villages exist on the surface of Hokkaido. The actual kingdom extends all the way under northern Honshu, and even partly under the coastline of Hokkaido.

Fa' ah Lothaa: 'Dragon God's Breath', sometimes called 'Dragon Force'. It is the power of elements and Nature inherent within the planet, of sustaining life and making it thrive. However, it has a darker side, as Nature can destroy life just as easily as it can nurture it. Fire can warm you - or burn you. Water ca quench your thirst - or drown you. Earth can shelter you - or crush you under an avalanche. Wind can gently caress you - or blow you away with unparalleled fury. Such is the power of the Dragon God's Breath...

Yin' ul Lothaa: 'Death God's Breath', or 'Death Force'. Its name is misleading, as it is the power that oversees both life and death. Like the Dragon God's Breath, it has both a bright and a dark side. It is very rare to find individuals capable of wielding this power, as most abuse it and end up being consumed by it.

Iivron 'n Iar: 'Unending Void' or 'Void Force'. The power of existence and nothingness, which determines whether something is or isn't. This power is inherent in all that exists, and cannot be controlled by anything short of a full-fledged God. Time-manipulation is part of this sphere of action.

Ghi 'za Zeneth: 'That Which Parts the Ether', or simply 'Ethereal Divider'. The name of Rachel's magical halberd. It was given this name because it is so heavily enchanted, it is capable of cutting through even energy.

What, you want more? :p

Well, I'm very curious on where you are going to take this that's for sure. The idea of a dragon girl and Ranma? Hmm. Of course, there isn't a whole lot here other than basic introduction, <_< but it is a great introduction nonetheless. I especially like the details you've given the new arrivals, and while I wasn't really proofreading, other than say, what Hawk brought up, I didn't see any major grammar mistakes.

As for the Draconian languages... cool. Well researched and that is always a plus. :)

Some more of the prologue from me. Enjoy and don't forget to give me any comments you may have.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

"Are you 'Genma-papa'?" she asked, curiosity in her eyes. Genma blinked, not expecting the question, and the dragonman nodded towards him, acknowledging his confusion.

"What the Young Maiden is asking is, are you this child's parent?" the dragon-like creature explained. At Genma's nod, he motioned for a spot near the campfire. "Please, sit down. We did not mean to startle you, human, but we were surprised to find a lone child on our territory."

After Genma had cautiously settled himself down, never taking his eyes off the dragonman, the creature continued. "I believe introductions are in order. I am Ledivar Alondite, Omega Guard of Her Majesty the God-Dragon Empress Serina Feobane, ruler of the Fa' ah Yin 'ul Lothaa... in your human language, that would translate to something along the lines of 'Eternal Earth Kingdom', I believe." The dragonman nodded towards the young girl near him, who was still staring curiously at him. "The little lady is Her Highness the Dragonmaiden Rachel Feobane, youngest daughter of Her Majesty and meant to someday be our guide in times of trouble. On behalf of the Shou 'k Nadol... the 'Starborne Children'... we would like to extend hospitality towards you for the time being, as a snowstorm is coming and being outside with such weather could prove fatal to you both."

Genma blinked. Eternal Earth? Starborne Children? This was proving to be a little too much for his admittedly subpar brain to grasp, but one thing he could easily make out of all this: hospitality meant free food! His stomach and what little common sense he had warred for all of the two seconds it took for hunger to emerge victorious, and Genma nodded. "We would be honored to accept your invitation, Ledivar-san," he quickly answered, figuring that being polite was the best course of action for the time being. The dragonman nodded, and the girl broke into a wide grin.

"Come, come, Ranma," she egged the boy on, grabbing his hand and pulling. "I want you to play with me. You will play with me, right? Good." Without waiting for an answer she all but dragged a slightly bewildered Ranma away, while Ledivar and Genma exchanged glances as they got up to follow the children. The dragonman shrugged.

"The Young Maiden always gets carried away when she finds a new playmate," he explained. "She is more mature than her age suggests, really, but she's also a very lonely young lady, so she often acts with almost childish glee whenever she meets a potential friend. Although, I must admit she's never taken to a new acquaintance quite as quickly as she did your son..."

"Hm. By the way..." Genma asked with curiosity, "how did you feel my presence? I thought I had masked my ki quite well..."

"You did," Ledivar confirmed, "but by doing so, you created an unnatural 'dull zone' around yourself which stands out to one who is trained to 'feel' the Earth's essence, such as myself. Sometimes, trying too hard is just as harmful as not trying enough. Of course, few in this world are adept with the Kosonath 'rab Taro, so I suppose you should not worry too much about it..."

"The what...?" Genma blinked. The dragonman turned to look at him, still walking.

"Ah... the closest in your human tongue would be 'Armageddon Fist', but that is a very loose translation. It is an unarmed fighting style that draws power from the Dragon Lines that crisscross this planet, harnessing its energies to augment one's own ki. As a result, some truly crushing blows can be unleashed when using this syle."

"I see..." Genma nodded, his greedy mind already at work. If I can somehow get these dragonmen to teach the boy that style, it'll greatly benefit us. Now, how should I proceed about this?

Ledivar smiled as he walked, observing Ranma and Rachel toss snowballs at each other. "The Young Maiden looks truly happy. It has become an increasingly rarer occasion since her older brother failed to return from our last skirmish with the Phoenix people..."

Hearing those words, everything clicked in Genma's mind. He now had a plan. All he had to do now was carry it out...

Mmm, the beginning looks good. Although, some of the mixed words of Dragonian and English(Japanese) language is somewhat... meh-ish to me. As an example, you might want to have Ledivar state his title completely in Dragonian instead of sort of tacking on the Fa' ah Yin 'ul Lothaa at the end, or just have it completely in English(Japanese).

One question, and this is more of an idle curiosity, how are Dragonian words pronounced?

Heheh, when I see dragon maiden, I automatically can't help but think of "Return of the Condor Heroes" and the protagonist - little dragon lady.

Still, nice start. :)

Good call. I'll have to fix that.

As a rule, normal humans cannot pronounce them correctly. Or rather, they can, but it'll leave their throats very sore.

When the apostrophe is close to the first part of a word (as in, for example, the Fa' ah word), it indicates a low, sudden, short clicking sound followed by a brief pause between the two halves of the word. When, however, it's closer to the second part (as in Zin 'na), it denotes a pause followed by a brief hissing sound that starts the second half of the word... think of it as if the second half was breathed out, not pronounced.

The other words are pronounced as you read them, but all of them tend to have a slight sibilant tone to them.

Is that clear enough?

Very much so. Although, honestly, I was expecting it to be more alien in pronunciation. Another idle curiosity comes to mind, how much thought/time have you put into it? ^_^

BTW, how exactly are you planning on using the Dragonian language?

I do not plan on using it much. Rachel is fluent in both Japanese and Draconian. She'll mostly use Japanese, although occasionally she'll say a few awkward phrases due to imperfect grasp of individual words. And she'll occasionally lapse into speaking in Draconian at times, although one word she uses often - when referring to Ranma, she'll generally call him zin 'na. If she calls him 'Ranma', that's your cue to dive for cover, because it means she is upset. And an upset Dragonmaiden is bad for your health.

Also, Rachel's techniques are strictly in Draconian, though I'm still devising names that sound good. Given the rules I put up for how to spell words, feel free to contribute exotic-sounding names for techniques... :p

Made minor and major updates to the explaining posts. I've decided to focus solely on Ranma 1/2 for this fic, with no Sailor Moon crossover. However, there will be 'guest appearances' and side stories involving other series, but nothing permanent.
