I had changed the hardware to enable me to stream across my own network (Plex to Firestick), but the replacements aren't currently working so I'm back on the garbage.

Since my last post, I've opted to change providers. I will save some money every month (enough for 3-4 pints of beer once the pubs reopen!), though the speeds will probably be the same. Either way, new network hardware and WiFi passwords to add to the phone.

...Cost efficiency? (As in, they don't give a shit if the modem-router is garbage if it will save them money.)
Exactly. It's all about the Benjamins (or poundnotes in Raa's case).

If your ISP allows it and you have the cash, I suggest buying your own. Not only do you have better choice, but you will likely save money in the long run on rental costs. My cable modem paid for itself in one year. Granted I don't know things work in the UK.

I was using third party hardware, but at the moment, I can't seem to get it to work properly. This means that I'm stuck using the garbage I was sent.

I'm transferring some stuff from NAS to a local drive and I'm only getting 1mb/s speeds for the transfer. That's across a wired network.

The next two weeks will be challenging, but nothing I can't handle and certainly nothing compared to the hardships others have to bear.

The main issue I've had with my prior provider up to the point I asked to be upgraded was the contract I was under had a rent to own policy on their routers, so after 2 years of paying I owned it and would no longer get charged monthly (while it would cost more than a off the shelf, I could still say was using their equipment at a reasonable price)... but any newer contract for the faster speeds would be permanent lease. That held me up wanting to upgrade, until about March this year. I've since learned all the providers in my area are now only offering permanent lease contracts only (anything to get more money).

With my working from home, I wanted the faster speeds to deal with my need to connect into the work servers on top of the other uses, my nephew also needed access for school. The new load was making the internet sluggish, but workable. So when I called up, they were all too happy to say the higher speeds were available, but each appointment time a day or so before they sent me texts cancelling stating needing more engineering time. After 4 cancellations on their part I was done with them.

The current company came in on a single appointment, took a little over an hour due to laying a new line, and was done... everything started right up house wide that was connected to my central wiring. Including the work computer with its VPN and special security.

The only issue I sent them an email on, was I noticed there is some discrepancy on the exact email settings for my email client needed to use their email address, I've found several differing settings on line and I'm having some issues with it... no big deal though as I do not intend to use their email address for anything.

My computer started freezing up at random times, so I sent it to my local repair guy to have it looked at/fixed. That was back in March, literally a week before California shut down all non-essential businesses.

The repair man got it back to me on Saturday. Turned out he had some serious lung issues before Covid hit, and wouldn't run the risk of catching the disease. Which I understand. I'm just glad I got my laptop back, and can send it back to the manufacturer for repair (the hard drive is going out and needs replacing). Also, that he's okay - he's the best PC repair guy I've ever met.

Unless it is under warrantee, if you have all the disks to do a reinstall you would be far better doing it yourself. Replacing a hard drive in most notebooks in my experience is a mere 5 minute process, but then you need to reinstall the OS, drivers, and software, which can take time.

I do the same, though whenever I don't feel like changing the SSD/HDD or RAM, I ask my little brother; he's the only one I trust to do it flawlessly.

Oh, it's under warranty - I bought an extended one earlier this year.

I'm hoping to get at least another year out of it, before I have to buy another. Ideally, I can get another 2-3 years out of it.

It really is not as hard as some make out, but does require basic knowledge... in broad terms...

- I back up all items of a personal nature ( favorites/bookmark/emails/other files, etc) to the NAS units I have

- I download the latest drivers and versions for the stuff I have that I can do that for, and back those up as well.

- I replace and/or format/partition the hard drive and start windows install.

- Once windows and networking up, start installing everything else

- I use a master spreadsheet where I note everything I do in it configuration and settings wise for all my programs on all my systems... then follow the instructions and order I used for my last install...

- I restore the favorites/bookmark/emails/other files.

It is very straightforward, it just takes time.

I was looking for my old Cyberpunk 2020 books earlier this weekend so I could complain about all the stuff that I'm supposed to have by now, like the lack of hoverboards and flying DeLoreans 5 years ago. Unfortunately, I couldn't find them. :(

Well, considering what CP 2020 was claiming the world would be like, and what most of that stuff tended to do to your head and your (and other's) body, I'm willing to give up hoverborads, and CP202 never promised flying deLoreans.

IN fact, nothing anywhere ever promised flying deLoreans. There's only ever been the one, and it wasn't even in a cyberpunk setting.

Eheh. I'd rewritten my post without a close edit pass before hitting the reply button, so the full phrase was "complain about all the stuff I'm supposed to have by now like I'd complained about the lack of hoverboards and flying Deloreans 5 years ago." I could've sworn I'd posted about the hoverboards and such in 2015 somewhere on this board, but a cursory search turned up nothing, so I removed the bolded words but left the rest in. So if that was conflated into my grumbling about the Cyberpunk franchise, I apologize for my inept grammar.

Probably going to have to call a furnace repairman out... seems yestwerday and today I've got a intermittent water leak, just a little one... I had thought it was coming from the humidifier, but I turned that completely off and shut off the water to it and was going to order a new filter... but still have the leak... so it is probably instead to do with the coils or coil drain.... it is due for maintenance anyway though.

It's Florida, you wonder how much meth the person has taken and then then go about your day laughing at the idiots.

Actually, I think a large portion of the U.S. has been taking stupid pills or some other IQ lowering product, the sheer amount of outrageous and stupifying behavior in the news is appalling. From not just government and media, but even some of the general public.

MDMA? Using that in conjunction with face masks and Vicks Vaporub used to be popular. Now that it's supposed to be normal to wear masks in public, maybe they're just bombing hard with that combination 16 hours a day as opposed to a few hours per rave.

I think they've been lacing the food with whatever substance it is. JC the stupid burns here right now.

I turned 30 earlier this year. It sucks. I hope medical technology rapidly improves in the next few decades. I'd love to live to be 120 or something.

Next thing you know, the administrator locks you into a death game and challenges you to clear it to log out. Otherwise, your hardware will microwave your brain. :p

Off-hand, I cannot believe that Sword Art Online is almost 20 years old--the original web serial debuted in 2002.

I'll just let somebody else clear the game.

Though with fully-immersive VR, I'm sure there will be lots of saucy 18+ stuff

Today's...thing: Please do not confuse the fanfic "My Immortal" with Roger Zelazny's This Immortal. This is just painful.

Evanescence fans have told me that they're more than sick of the trolling question "Do you like 'My Immortal'?
