Naruto A commented re-reading of the manga

His likeness to Minato aside I'm sure the Uzumaki name would be much more noticeable. Although going by the treatment the other two dying uber-clans got (Senju, Uchiha) it doesn't really surprise me that Naruto didn't get much attention regardless of his family name. Really it seems that the only ones that cared the two founding (and most overpowered) clans were about to disappear were Danzo and Orochimaru (and Danzo is really debatable).

To be fair we don't actually know that the Senju clan died out or is dying out. It's weird that they don't make any appearances aside from Tsunade and the zombie!Hokages outside of flashbacks, but then it was also weird that we never saw any Sarutobi clan members other than Konohamaru and Hiruzen until a couple dozen members suddenly showed up out of the blue to throw some fire jutsu at the Juubi. We've still yet to see any other Shimura clansmen besides Danzou despite them being a powerful and famous clan who were one of the first clans to join Konoha after it's founding.

I personally think the Senju just disbanded - the former members of the Senju and their descendants are all still alive and well, they just stopped acting as an organized clan and changed their names or married into other families. I base this off a comment Tobirama made about how his naive brother hoped that joining the village would encourage all the ninja clans to desegregate. Dissolving his own clan to set an example for others to follow is perfectly in character for Hashirama.

You know people like to say that Naruto was given his mother's surname to hide his relationship to Minato, but does that really have any basis in canon? I suspect it may have had more to do with the fact that the Uzumaki clan was so respected in Konoha that every Konoha-nin wears their clan symbol on their uniforms. Perhaps Hiruzen hoped that being a member of such a beloved clan would cancel out some of the hatred Naruto received for being a jinchuuriki?

This makes sense.

On a related note, are we ever told (implied or direct mention) there are more mokuton users besides Hashirama and Yamato?

You mean besides Orochimaru, Danzou, Madara, Obito and several thousand Zetsu I presume?

I cannot recall it ever being directly stated that no other Senju awakened the same power, but none have been mentioned (and his own grandchild did not inherit it) and every single other known person who has ever acquired the kekkei genkai did so by grafting Hashirama's cells into their own body. So it's quite heavily implied that Mokuton was a unique ability possessed (naturally) only by Hashirama.

IIRC, when Naruto first spoke to Minato, Minato believed that the Third had kept his heritage a secret to protect him.

Well, Minato had personal enemies. A Minato-lookalike that has the same face of him would attire them like moths to flame.
A random Uzumaki brat imitating the Yellow Flash's look would pass under the radar, instead.
