Basically, post your ideas for different personalities that Shinji could have had and how you think they'd come about.

Nihilist!Shinji: Basically House!Shinji. This is essentially a Shinji that's somewhat smarter than he was before and knows it. But he's been hurt by someone. He has no faith in anything and gets quite a kick out of dropping the other shoe on people he views as "deluded."

Keet!Shinji: Shinji with an extremely fun loving personality. Basically, this Shinji had to take care of his guardian in his old home because of some medical condition. So he's well acquainted with suffering. So he tries to make the best of it and keep his spirits up. Essentially, he's a male Tohru Honda or an older Morel Orel.

Emo!Shinji: Nothing bad happened to him...at all. But in his search for some sort of meaning, he latched onto the typical Emo mindset of pseudo-suffering. Like Nihilist!Shinji, just not as erudite or genuine. Maybe he plays guitar and writes songs about how his guardians don't understand him.

Kyon!Shinji

Uncanny Valley Boy Shinji: Not evil, just doesn't know the difference between good and bad. He acts like a normal or even popular kid but is completely soulless and robotic on the inside. I can see him acting like Asakura form Haruhi and piolet a berzerk Eva with a pleasent smile on his face.

CrazyAwesome!Shinji: At a certain point, Shinji developed a love of SCIENCE! And his knowledge of the world and love of strange phenomena grew to the point where he could spot the logical irregularities in the laws of nature. For instance, he knows how to throw someone with a flick of your wrist, how to make napalm, and how to win at rochambeau. Essentially, this is a Mythbuster!Shinji.

Homicidal!Shinji: Shinji has snapped, ultimately and finally. He has gone the way of Nny and now marks his path in human blood. He may or may not also paint his walls with it.

Paranoid!Shinji: This is a Shinji that sees conspiracies everywhere. He is trying to unravel the multitude of secrets that his father, the government, and PenPen are keeping from him. Funny scene, Kensuke wakes up in a dark room, tied to a chair. A light comes on. Shinji's voice rings out, "Tell me. Tell me what you know. WHAT IS THE CAFETERIA SERVING NEXT TUESDAY!?" Alternatively, Toji wakes up tied to a chair and hears Shinji ask, "What color were they? WHAT COLOR WERE HIKARI'S PANTIES?!"

I thought Shinji and Warhammer did a pretty good job with Crazy Awesome myself. And Nobody Dies went the other way by making Shinji NORMAL.

Still...

Sadist! Shinji: This Shinji has been hurt all his life to the point that he snapped and developed a personality similar to the Joker from Batman. He likes to hurt people either because he likes their pain and thinks it's funny, or he does it because he thinks all the things that happened to him are because of people who love him.

I'm not sure that this thread isn't redundant.

I mean, we've already got several ideas threads, one of which is specifically geared to the idea that Shinji's different because of his guardians.

See this is different. Whenever Shinji has a guardian adopts THAT guardians personality traits or a few of them. With this thread we are free to ruminate on Conceptual Shinjis or Shinjis with personality types without the idiosyncrasies of the guardian.

It allows us then to alter Shinji rather than a way of a possible crossover to a slight alteration instead of his childhood.

Shinji tugged at the brim of his NERV baseball cap, and looked at the group. Hikari was whining about the school regulations, as usual, while Asuka was trying to reassure the girl that she was just being paranoid. Aida had his own stance on the argument, but he didn't make it too well known, instead checking his latest camera footage.

Then Toji turned to him. "So, Shinji, you agree, don't you?"

"Right," Shinji answered.

"Oh come on!" Hikari snapped. "Shinji, all you do is agree with Toji!"

"Right!"

What about Metal!Shinji? At some point in his history, Shinji was exposed to the glory and majesty of THE METAL and became a follower of the Lords of Thunder, the Almighty Gods of ROCK!

Blackadder Shinji: Shinji Ikari with the same personality as Edmund Blackadder from the second, third or fourth season.

Blackadder: A man may fight for many things. His country, his friends, his principles, the glistening ear on the cheek of a golden child. But personally, I'd mud-wrestle my own mother for a ton of cash, an amusing clock and a sack of French porn.

Blackadder: They do say, Mrs M, that verbal insults hurt more than physical pain. They are, of course, wrong, as you will soon discover when I stick this toasting fork into your head.

FundamentalCatholic!Shinji: He is convinced that the Angels are "The Devil's Toys" and that the EVAs are "Instruments of God." Yes, I'm well aware that this should be reversed, but it would be the shortest fanfic in history. He'd be killed before he even got in the cockpit. For characterization, think Peter Griffin's Father.

Otaku!Shinji. Geeked-out gamer/anime nerd who is definitely One Of Us. Very genre-savvy. Frustrates the hell out of Gendo who can't figure out how he's predicting so much.

The Tick!Shinji: He strangely walks around either nude or constantly in plugsuit, randomly shouts "SPOON!" as a battle cry, and is so out of touch with reality that his insanity is simultaneously frightening and awe-inspiring.

No, the better way to pull that off would be having Unit-00 somehow obtain the soul of "The Tick", and Ayanami, clad in white plugsuit, of course, would be Arthur.

Trained!Shinji: Gendo sent Shinji away to be raised like Asuka was, with combat training from an early age. Only unlike canon Asuka (who thrilled to the martial arts and EVA piloting simulations while simultaneously learning not a goddamn thing about how an actual soldier thinks, a la, discipline and esprit de corps), Shinji is in fact the inverse: Shinji was only a moderate student at the combat skills (because he still has Shinji's inherent qualities, including Shinji's tendency to try to avoid conflict rather than get off on it), Shinji is all about trying to bond with the team and keep everyone else around him alive (because his desire for any damn human contact at all found the whole 'squad building exercise' concept like a thirsty plant finds water in a desert).

To keep the fic from being totally boring we add in that Shinji is still rebellious to NERV authority (because he's still pissed off at Gendo re: abandonment, and not stupid enough not to notice that Gendo was trying to brainwash Shinji to be a good little soldier), and you have a more competent Eva pilot (in that while he's no Asuka, he actually *does* know something about fighting, both in and out of the EVA) that is, in the complete opposite of canon Shinji, actively trying to reach out to all around him and form a cohesive Nakama out of them all... with the obstacles of course being the fact that Rei, Asuka, and Misato all still have their own psychological damage working from their end re: preventing close approach.

Add in also that Trained!Shinji has mixed feelings for Misato: distinct lack of respect for her drunkenness and lack of personal discipline, but with growing respect for her actual military experience and command ability (which are considerable), and slowly growing affection and pity as he realizes what's under Misato's shell...

... and of course his even more mixed feelings for Asuka (impressed at her skills, attracted to her looks, driven absolutely frothing up the wall at her utter lack of teamwork, glory hound tendencies, and bitchy habits), and Rei (glad that at least somebody else on this team just shuts up and tries to be a team player, sympathy at how starved she is for affection, but simultaneously creeped out at her obvious lack of socialization, with a burning undercurrent of 'My dad did this to Rei... can I really trust her to pick me/us over him? And damn, I hate him even more now.')

Edit: Just thought of something else... since Shinji actually isn't desperately panicking when he goes out to fight the Third Angel (as while he's making his first Eva deployment in a rush, under fire, and without a wingman, at least he actually knows how to drive the goddamn thing), he's going to go longer before finding his Berserker mode. Which means when Asuka flounces in and says that she should be made the primary Eva pilot with the first crack at any new Angel as they both had the same training but she has notably the more impressive training scores, she has more of an argument (not a winning argument: Shinji still has actual Angel kills, along with Rei, while she doesn't yet), but enough of one that there's an actual leadership struggle between the two for a while.

A more talented writer than I (that is to say, someone who can actually write) could get mileage out of this, I think.
