Considering that Warehouse 13 and Eureka is about to have crossover episodes, I'm left wondering if this has happened before. How many times have a show had a crossover with another?

Biggest crossover I'm aware of is... Green Acres- The Beverly Hillbillies- Petticoat Junction. They crossovered and referenced each other on a semi-regular basis.

It is quite common.
Last year, CSI did one.
Lots of shows do it.

TV shows constantly do references to other shows for lots of reasons. It could just be a small shout-out, such as actors from another show guest-starring to promote that other show. Or, if that other show is already over, it's just a bit of an in-joke with the audience who are fans of that other show. It could also be a full-blown crossover where two or more shows present a story arc that starts in one show and end in another. TV networks do that kind of stuff with their dramas and sitcoms to promote viewership. They also do that kind of stuff to test the viability of spin-off shows (e.g. NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, CSI: Miami, CSI: New York, Highlander: Raven).

Pretender/Profiler series did a crossover where the plot started in one and ended in the other series.

These probably wont count as they involve spinoffs and the original series - NCIS/NCIS LA, Buffy/Angel , CSI too maybe?

The various Stargate series have had a number of crossover episodes. Though since they share the same universe it's not that huge a deal.

I do remember a lot of TGIF crossovers though, including one between Hangin' with Mr. Cooper and Full House.

That jogged my memory of a 'serial crossover event' in which Sabrina the Teenage Witch crossed with Boy Meets World, Teen Angel, and You Wish. It was during the 1997-98 line up.

Family Matters also had a crossover with American Gladiators once.

Mork (of Mork and Mindy) once showed up on Happy Days before the Mork and Mindy show existed.
