Chapter 2: Observing the Means

Gasping, the limping figure collapsed onto the cheap rental bed. Blood oozed slowly through the many
torn patches on its shirt and jacket and one arm hung limply at its side.
It had not been a good night for Bazett Fraga McRemitz.
"What a monster."
Her right shoulder was dislocated, half her ribs were probably cracked and she was already feeling
lightheaded from the loss of blood. It galled her to admit it, but the only reason she was still
alive was that Berserker's master seemed to have lost interest in the chase and believed she could
deal with Lancer and his master at her leisure. The short haired redhead gritted her teeth, Einzbern
was probably correct on that score. Lancer was even worse off then she was with both arms broken,
though smashed was probably a more accurate description. Even with her feeding him all the extra prana
she could spare and keeping him in astral form there was no way he was going to be able to wield his cursed spear
any time soon. Even if Berserker's master didn't send him to finish the job the two of them would be easy pickings
for any of the Grail War's other participants.
"There's no way to defeat that Servant."
Slowly and painfully the young woman started to tear strips from the sheets to bind her many wounds.
Her own Servant's strongest attack, the absolute Trump Card that could not be dodged, had failed to finish off
that unstoppable giant. Even her own secret Ace in the Hole, Fragarach, had merely stopped him temporarily while
he'd regenerated from the fatal wounds. She glanced down at the floor. Only one of the single shot Noble Phantasms
was left after the two she'd used against Berserker. It would take her a whole month to make another one.
She didn't have a month. Bazett wasn't even sure if she still had a day left.
She was so very tired.
Oblivion swept over the exhausted mage.
