Chapter 2: Observing the Means
-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-

Gasping, the limping figure collapsed onto the cheap rental bed. Blood oozed slowly through the many
torn patches on its shirt and jacket and one arm hung limply at its side.

It had not been a good night for Bazett Fraga McRemitz.

"What a monster."

Her right shoulder was dislocated, half her ribs were probably cracked and she was already feeling
lightheaded from the loss of blood. It galled her to admit it, but the only reason she was still
alive was that Berserker's master seemed to have lost interest in the chase and believed she could
deal with Lancer and his master at her leisure. The short haired redhead gritted her teeth, Einzbern
was probably correct on that score. Lancer was even worse off then she was with both arms broken,
though smashed was probably a more accurate description. Even with her feeding him all the extra prana
she could spare and keeping him in astral form there was no way he was going to be able to wield his cursed spear
any time soon. Even if Berserker's master didn't send him to finish the job the two of them would be easy pickings
for any of the Grail War's other participants.

"There's no way to defeat that Servant."

Slowly and painfully the young woman started to tear strips from the sheets to bind her many wounds.

Her own Servant's strongest attack, the absolute Trump Card that could not be dodged, had failed to finish off
that unstoppable giant. Even her own secret Ace in the Hole, Fragarach, had merely stopped him temporarily while
he'd regenerated from the fatal wounds. She glanced down at the floor. Only one of the single shot Noble Phantasms
was left after the two she'd used against Berserker. It would take her a whole month to make another one.

She didn't have a month. Bazett wasn't even sure if she still had a day left.

She was so very tired.

Oblivion swept over the exhausted mage.

Poor Lancer. Berserker is such a bad match-up for him. Good job changing things up, Tengu.

Sure there is, Bazette! Win over Emiya Shirou with the power of b00bs and/or Justice, get him to trace the one Fragarach you have left, and then get him to hit Berserker with about 11 copies of Fragarach in a row.

Ah... but Berserker can only be killed by different things, he gains immunity! to whatever kills him the last go around. :snigger:

So....is the new archer, the one changing everything, and Saber going to show up? I can see Caster calling in an extra servant and getting Saber, because of Shiro, but will Rin get the new Archer?

Good, an update!

The question is this: Caster is not going to be at her best with the amount of prana she can draw from Shiro. It's more than she can draw from Kuzuki, but it's still not going to be enough. So to increase the flow of prana, there are 2 possibilities (are there more?)

1. Caster takes souls (Shiro won't allow it).

2. Exchange of fluids...ho boy.

How possible is it for Caster to draw another Servant and Shiro to draw Saber?

And I'd like to see the scene between Archer and Saber when they do meet..again!

One point. Bazett can't actually use Fragarach against Berserker. Its an extremely crappy attack unless it is used to counter the enemies best. Unfortunately for Bazett, Berserker can't use Nine Lives in that class, but it is still his best attack.

Not quite. Nasu has stated that God Hand counts as Berserker's Trump Card, and that Fragarach would take off one (and only one) life. But since Herc has 12 lives and BC, stuff like that doesn't bother him and wouldn't even slow him down.

From what I'm reading, it seems to be a problem for the story as well, since God Hand develops resistance against Fragarach after the first one.

Seems to me Bazette used two, and both killed him. That's not...really right.

Oh well, I'm just gonna go with, Bazette attempted Fragarach a second time and realized that it didn't work anymore.

It wasn't stated that the second one killed him, only that two had been used. Of course I would have asked "Why are you trying to fight a Servant? Only someone chosen by the Plot can do that!" However, I haven't played the second game yet so I'm just assuming that she either couldn't run or that she has zero survival instincts.

Caster awoke to a morning she'd thought she would never see.

The slender woman's body felt strangely light as she simply lay there, looking up at the plain white wooden ceiling of the room.

"Feeling better?"

Caster jerked herself upright then fell back down on the futon as her body told her in the universal language
of pain that she was currently in no condition to be making any kind of sudden movements. She was forced to
settle for slowly lifting her head to face the stone faced woman in a conservative suit who stood watching her.

"Where am I?"

"Well that depends on who you are and what your intentions are."

The Servant wished that she had the hood of her cloak to conceal herself from that flat unblinking stare.
There was no heat or chill of anger in those eyes, no sign of threat or danger. It was like having a
mountain watch her and it frightened her. No human should ever be able to look like that.

The woman continued on, "You're not Assassin, not dressed like that. I think its safe to rule out
all of the others that needn't be mentioned now as well."

She rubbed her right leg with her hand absentmindedly.

"So then, Caster, what do you want?"

The sorceress said nothing, but her eyes darted around the room, searching....

"If you're looking for Shirou, he's not here right now."

"Where is he?"

The words escaped her lips before Caster could stop them.

Maiya raised a single eyebrow as the elvish face refused to meet her gaze directly.

"His problem is that he's too trusting. Too damn honest. I on the other hand, have no such illusions."

She remembered the Caster from the last Grail War, a psychopathic bastard so evil that he'd actually forced
the rest of the surviving participants to temporarily put their own conflicts aside in order to destroy him
and his Master before they destroyed all of Fuyuki city.

If this woman was of the same cast as Bluebeard, she would not leave the room alive.

That brings up an interesting point. It has been a while, and my memory is a little fuzzy on whether non-magical attacks are capable of killing a Servant, so does Maiya have any way to defeat Caster? From what I understand, Caster is already drawing upon Shirou for mana, and depending on how the author wants to play it, might have regained enough power to use some of her lower level spells. However, Maiya has the home advantage, and several hours to prepare. It would be interesting to at least see what counter-measures she felt appropriate to destroy a Servant.

On the snippet as a whole, good job. After a quick glance over, I'm not seeing any apparent grammar or spelling mistakes. Maiya is acting fairly reasonably considering she nearly died in the last war, and she has presumably dedicated her life to keep Shirou safe. I like the dynamic between Shirou-Maiya-Caster, and look forward to seeing more scenes with them, especially the changes in Shirou as a result of having Maiya raise him.

Edit. Forget my previous statement.

Caster shouldn't be drawing on any prana from Shirou. Unless something's changed in this fic Shirou can only give a Servant prana one way and they haven't had time for sex yet. His contract with her might have saved her from getting knocked out early, but without sex or souls she can't do a thing. Right now even a normal human might be able to kill her.

Does Maiya have Kiritsugu's guns? His magic pistol might well be quite capable of killing Caster.

One way or another, this is going to be an interesting 'fic.

Hm. I can see Caster, with Shirou's assistance, summoning Saber via the same thing that let Emiya summon her... but the prana issue is going to be big.

Unless, of course, under Maiya's training, his mana levels are -much- higher....
