Akamatsuverse Balancing act

Takes place a week after the events in the second novel, except that Kitsune and Motoko are still in switched bodies. Yes, it's not the best premise, and the novels kind of suck, but the idea kept nagging at me to write it down.

Balancing act.

ôThis is a rather difficult situation, you two.ö announced the elder Aoyama as she reached for her tea.

Motoko squirmed in KitsuneÆs body. She might have been more comfortable if she was in her original body. A week had passed since the mix-up with the living souls exchange, and that worthless scroll failed to return her to HER body. Simply being in the same room as her sister was often enough to unnerve her, but the recent announcement of her failure had put her sister into a less amicable state of mind.

æSheÆs going to make me commit seppuku.Æ she thought. æNo! SheÆll return me to my body and THEN make me commit seppuku. No, thatÆs too easy. She WONÆT let me commit seppuku! No! SheÆll-æ

In contrast Kitsune was rather calm. It wasnÆt out of courage or stoicism, but from ignorance. She simply had no idea of how terrifying Tsuroko could be. Granted, Kitsune was still afraid of her, but without years of exposure to the demon slaying terror she was more unnerved about how uncomfortable MotokoÆs body was. Kitsune hadnÆt adjusted well to life in MotokoÆs body. Where MotokoÆs finely-tuned reflexes and superhuman strength would react with grace and flawlessness, KitsuneÆs movements were erratic and clumsy. Worst of all, Motoko refused to let Kitsune ôcorruptö her body with alcohol. Kitsune had not touched a drop of alcohol in the past week and at the moment she was parched.

ôI donÆt suppose you have anything stronger than tea?ö TsurokoÆs gaze fixed upon Motoko.

ôIÆm terribly sorry, Ms Konno, but I would prefer your mind to be as clear as possible for the rest of our little chat.ö

ôUm, IÆm over here actually.ö

ôI am aware of that Ms Konno.ö Tsuroko continued to stare at Motoko.

ôOh. Uh-ö

ôShinmei-ryu has more enemies than you are aware of, Ms Konno. If any of them discovered this mishap the results could be devastating. It is best that I keep up appearences.ö TsurokoÆs gaze hadnÆt moved. Motoko could scarcely breathe.

ôWell I guess that makes sense.ö

ôObviously.öreplied Tsuroko as she turned from Motoko. The younger sister took a single deep breath and shuddered before returning to normal. ôNow as for your æsituationÆ there are sadly very few cures. There is a surefire method. I believe that Motoko has a scroll which-ô

ôWe tried that, sister.ö TsurokoÆs paralyzing gaze now fixed on Kitsune, who was beginning to learn why Motoko feared her so much.

ôDid you? That is...odd. That technique is not supposed to carry the slightest chance of failure. Are you certain that you preformed the ritual adequetly?ö

ôYes, sister. We followed it to the letter!ö

ôReally? Who did you use as the sheath? I thought Mr. Urashima had left for Amereica.ö MotokoÆs mind backpedaled furiously.

ôI told you, we followed it to the-What did you mean by æwho?Æö

ôWhy the man, of course. Who did you use for...ö Tsuroko came to an unpleasant realization. ôDear sister, you did not follow it verbatim, did you?ö

ôThatÆs what I was trying to tell you!ö the elder Aoyama paused for a few moments to contain her frustration. The woman looked like a powder keg set to explode and neither Kitsune nor Motoko felt like adding a spark. After gathering her thoughts the older woman spoke.

ôYou are far to innocent for your own good dear. That manuscript was written in a more prudish age than ours and was intended to be symbolic. It actually refers to a manÆs-ö

ôI-it said to use the sheath of the sword used in the transfer! What does that have to do with...you know...ö

ôA Penis?ö suggested Kitsune. MotokoÆs, or to be more precise KitsuneÆs face flushed in embarrassment.

ôPrecisely Ms Konno. The answer to the question is simple though. Most mishaps in the past involved male and female students, or two males on occasion. In those situations the æsheathÆ is readily available. The first instance involving two women occurred after the scroll was written.ö

ôMotoko and I arenÆt going to have to have sex, are we?ö asked Kitsune TsurokoÆs nose wrinkled in slight disgust.

ôIf you must, but-ö Kitsune cut her off.

ôBelieve me, IÆd rather not. No offense, Motoko.ö

ôNone taken.ö Motoko eyed Kitsune suspisciously.

ôWhat? ItÆs a legitimate question!ö Kitsune exclaimed.

ôAs I was saying, I wouldnÆt recommend it. There were...complications when the first two tried to right themselves in that manner.ö

ôI canÆt believe this. DoesnÆt this method only work on the first night?ö Motoko was desperately looking for a way out of this.

ôThatÆs not what æfirst nightÆ refers to. It refers to a womanÆs...first night in bed..ö Tsuroko responded. ôMs Konno, have you ever been with a man?ö Motoko stammered. She wasnÆt expecting that response, nor was she prepared for it being asked in her direction. Kitsune was slightly more relaxed. To her the conversation was becoming more akin to locker room talk. That she could handle. Crazy-sister-to-sister death talks she was less adept at.

ôYou mean sex? Not unless you count some heavy petting.ö

ôAs long as your maidenhood is intact, then yes.ö Kitsune let out a sigh of relief.

ôWell, IÆm good then.ö

ôI see. And you sister?ö MotokoÆs brain locked up.

ôI-I-I would never! I-I h-have-ö Her head jerked side to side spasmodically.

ôJust checking Dear sister.ö

ôI believe that you think I would- That I would even-ö

ôI was just checking, sister. It is necessary for this to work; after all.ö

ôIsnÆt there any other way? There has to be!ö

ôWell, I suppose we could petition some of the lesser known kami.ö

ôShouldnÆt we try that instead?ö Asked Motoko, holding to the faint glimmer of hope that...that...process could be avoided, or at least postponed.

ôI wouldnÆt. Such kami are quite unreliable if not whimsical. YouÆd be lucky if they put you in a human body, much less your own.ö

ôYou mean like an animal?ö Kitsune inquired.

ôYes. For example, they may deem to place you in a turtleÆs body.ö Motoko blanched at the suggestion. ôIt seems a bit drastic to avoid copulating in my opinion.ö MotokoÆs glimmer of hope died out. If her sister hadnÆt mentioned the turtle, she might still try dealing with the kami. Her sister was correct though. With her luck sheÆd spend the rest of her life in TamaÆs body.

ôSo what happens now?ö Kitsune asked.

ôI am going to start searching in the Shinmei ryu ranks for a suitor. That is, unless either of you already have someone in mind?ö

ôSuitor! But what about becoming the head of the school? You said-ö

ôFirst off, marriage would hardly preclude you from headmastership. Secondly, do you really believe the elders would allow you to become headmaster after this incident? Why do you think I was asked to step down?ö Tsuroko argued. Motoko couldnÆt believe her ears.

ôThey asked you to do what?ö

ôWhen I was still being groomed for the position of headmaster they requested that I preform this technique on another student. To qualify for the position of headmaster a student must show the raw talent necessary to perform this right the first time. As you can tell I failed, and that is how I married your brother-in-law.ö

ôWow, thatÆs kind of a tough break.ö added Kitsune.

ôIÆm sorry, sister. I didnÆt know.ö

ôDo not mistake my situation, sister. I love my husband, even before I was asked to perform the test we were...attracted to each other.ö

ôI understand, sister.ö

ôVery good. Now, unless you have a suitor in mind, I must make some phone calls. In addition, I would like to have a few words with Ms Konno in private.ö

ôHuh? Why me?ö

ôThat will become clear to you. Now, if you donÆt mind, could you excuse us Motoko?ö

ôYes, sister.ö With that Motoko briskly exited the room and walked towards KitsuneÆs. Motoko began to understand why the fox-woman drank so much.

I don't understand your question. Do you mean me personally or something about the fic? Forgive me, I'm not the brightest person on the internet.

I was making an obscure reference to Haitani and Shirai on the off chance that they'll wind up being drafted into this experiment.

chapter 2

Motoko wandered aimlessly through Hinata-sou, caught in a living nightmare. Her life, or at least the life she understood was over. The great fear that had haunted her for over a decade had been proven true. She wasnÆt good enough, and now she would be cast aside for someone stronger, better, faster, and more experienced. She had known all along that she wasnÆt the best. Now things started falling to pieces all around her because she was right. In the midst of this she reflexively held up a hand to block out the sun.
æThe Sun? Where did that come from?Æ she wondered. She snapped from her reverie and examined her surroundings.
æThe tea shop? When did- how did I get here?Æ For lack of anything better to do the body-switched Kendoka entered the shack and took a seat at the counter. Haruka stepped out from behind the counter towards the out-of-body Shinmeiryuu.
ôOh! Kitsune. Tsuroko managed to get your body back already did she?ö MotokoÆs head snapped up to look at Haruka. Tears welled up. MotokoÆs psyche just couldnÆt handle it anymore. Haruka got her answer.
ôYouÆre still Motoko, huh? Is there anything she can do?ö Haruka didnÆt get an answer. Instead she got two flailing arms wrapped around her and KitsuneÆs crying face buried in her shoulder. Haruka began stroking MotokoÆs improperly-blonde hair.
æWhy is it the basket cases always come to me?Æ thought Haruka as she dug for another cigarette.

ôSo, what do you need to tell me that you canÆt tell Motoko?ö KitsuneÆs mental state faired marginally better than MotokoÆs. She would be faring much better had Tsuroko let her drink something stronger than Orange Juice.
ôActually there are several things.ö Motoko reached into her hakama and pulled out an envelope. ôThis note comes directly from the Shinmeiryuu elders, stating Konno MitsuneÆs status as a probationary member of our school. It also expresses a desire to make her a full-fledged member.ö said Tsuroko as she slid the envelope towards Kitsune.
ôThatÆs nice, but IÆm not really cut out for the whole æSamurai WarriorÆ bit.ö
ôDo not assume that all of Shinmeiryuu is concerned with fighting demons. In fact only a handful posses the spiritual power necessary to be taught our sword techniques. IÆm certain that we can find a place more suited for you.ö
ôUh-huh.ö Kitsune was nonplussed.
ôAs the senior member you should show me more respect, Miss Konno. However, there are other pressing matters.ö
ôLike?ö
ôTo begin with, I need to know who she is in love with.ö
ôBeg pardon?ö Kitsune was confused.
ôThe soul-switching technique is normally foolproof. It fails only when confronted with a clouded heart. Motoko is in love with someone, and I need to know who.ö
ôSo youÆre not just being a nosy older sister then?ö Kitsune wasnÆt expecting Tsuroko to grin in response.
ôNot just that. But I need to be able to know if he can function as the æsheathÆ in the ritual. He will need some rudimentary spiritual strength, and the process will go more smoothly if she actually does love him. IÆm asking you again: who is my sister in love with?ö
ôI havenÆt a clue.ö Kitsune lied. ôI could go through her room and see if she has a diary or something that would tell me though.ö
ôWe could do that, or I could get you to tell me the truth.ö
ôI canÆt get much by you, can I?ö Kitsune lamented.
ôCall it a married womanÆs inuition.ö
ôNaturally. Can I also assume that youÆre are smitten with this man as well?ö
ôHey, thereÆs no need to bring me into this!ö Kitsune replied insistantly.
ôThat was not an answer. You also involved whether you like it or not, in fact.ö
ôMarried womanÆs intuition?ö Kitsune grumbled.
ôNaturally.ö an uncomfortable silence settled over the room. Both women were rapidly losing their patience. ôIt is Mr. Urashima, isnÆt it?ö TsurokoÆs words caused KitsuneÆs spine, or more accurately MotokoÆs spine to stiffen.
ôWho knows? It could be.ö
ôIÆll interpret that as a æyes.Æ That is most fortunate though. He has far more than what is necessary.ö said Tsuroko.
Kitsune didnÆt respond. Her angry stare spoke more than enough.,
ôMy, are you worried that youÆll lose your precious Urashima? You donÆt have to be. The elders are usually willing to make....allowances in this case.ö
ôWhat kind of æallowances?Æö Kitsune didnÆt like the sound of that.
ôThe elders would be more than willing to recognize the both of you as his legitimate spouses- even if the goverment wonÆt.ö
ôI see. How is that supposed to make me feel better about this?ö
ôIf you would rather have some of him than none, it should. Of course we can still find a suitable husband from within our own ranks if you would prefer.ö
ôThat wonÆt be necessary.ö Kitsune said through grit teeth. ôAnd if Motoko doesnÆt like the Idea?ö
ôOur sister doesnÆt have much say in this, my dear sister-in-law. I suppose that sheÆs lucky though. She will be married to someone that she truly loves. Not many people can say the same.ö
ôI didnÆt object to being married to him. Heck, IÆm not objecting to having to share him. The problem is...well thatÆs not important now, is it?.ö
ôOut of curiosity, where is Urashima? I havenÆt seen him since I arrived.ö Tsuroko glanced around the room, as though Ketiaro could have been hiding in one of the corners.
ôHeÆs studying in America. HeÆll be back in a few months though.ö Kitsune responded tritely.
ôI see. Now that is bad.ö Tsuroko looked slightly worried at the news.
ôWhy? I thought you said there wasnÆt a time limit on this.ö Kitsune began panicking internally. What wasnÆt this woman telling her?
ôNot as such, no.ö
ôNot as such? What does that mean?ö Kitsune blurted out.
ôI believe I had already said that you shouldnÆt approach Motoko...sexually.ö Tsuroko remarked tentatively.
ôYeah, and I said I donÆt swing that way.ö
ôThat may be, but your souls cry out for their bodies. You might not feel it at first, in fact you might not feel it at all, but what if Motoko does?ö
ôOh.ö Kitsune blanched. ôI hadnÆt thought of that. Does this mean that I have to start fending her off with a stick?ö
ôPerhaps. Hopefully not. It should pass after your souls are realigned. I would not dwell on it though. The consequences of such a...union could be disastrous.ö TsurokoÆs face began contorted in revulsion.
ôHow disastrous?ö
ôAt the least the both of you will permanently mimic the other, at worst the souls will reject each other. I would not like to dwell on that so soon after eating though. It gets messy.ö
ôRight. Do you have any good news for me at all? Just a little?ö
ôWell, as long as youÆre a member of Shinmeiryuu, you can expect to be taken care of. We look after our own if nothing else.ö
ôYouÆve got a really weird way of showing that, you know.ö Kitsune was dumbfounded. Did they actually expect her to believe that after all this?
ôWe may make demands of our people, but they want for little. Shinmeiryuu is a very wealthy organization. Speaking of which-ö She fumbled around her Hakama for another letter.
ôAs long as you are a member, and as MotokoÆs body isnÆt truly incapacitated, the elders have a job for you. It would be a good chance to learn more about your new in-law-to-be.ö
ôGreat. Just great. Are we done now?ö
ôYes.ö
ôWonderful. Now if you donÆt mind thereÆs a bottle of fortified liquor with my name on it.ö

What arc is this from again? I don't recall such a plot from either the Manga or Anime... :huh.:

It's actually not from the anime or the manga, it's from the LH novels. They aren't really that good, but this was an idea that struck me after reading the second one (where the Kitsune/Motoko body switch happens) If you haven't read the novels, I don't reccomend them. But I'll answer any questions that you have about the story or anything that's confusing. Sorry in advance.

Moar? I haven't read the novel (didn't know there was one until you mentioned it), so I'm a bit lost on things plotwise, but I can get the gist of it, and the gist is good.

Ah, I've read the previews for the novels. And to be honest, body switching is like... <_<. Too cliched in my book. No matter who gets switched.

the first novel took place sometime duringth manga series, and really only was useful for making Haruka Kei's cousin, rather than his aunt.

the second novel is two side stories taking place while Keitaro is away in America.

Ah. I'll have to get them then, if only to complete the collection.

Still have to get the anime DVDs, though.

I have to tell you, I'm one of the rare ones that thought the anime better, with exceptions, than the manga. Practically everyone I ever mentioned this to has told me that is definately not the case.

I will state, I thought the characters of Makoto, Kanako, and Tsuruko better in manga than anime. But as for the rest... welll. I took longer to get through the Love Hina manga series than any other manga I've ever owned by many orders of magnitude. I purchased the whole series back in late January, I only finished mid September. It just could not keep my interest and I had to force myself through it.

I also like the animes better. They allow for better emotional expression than the manga, and the characters and side characters are better developed, though the manga tends to have more back story. I like to take them altogether as canon, in order to get the full effect of Akamatsu's creation. I used the full vision for my fanfics on Mediaminer (read them if you haven't yet). I still wish that they'd done the remaining stories from vol. 9 on as anime rather than skipping large sections. Maybe someday that will happen from the Fan side of things. You never know. Computer technology lets you do wonderful things.

Also, this is a good story. Write more please. :)
