BtVS: Angel's 'Love' for Buffy

In chapter 11 of 'Emerald Spark', Cyclone had Xander suggest something rather interesting:

"Personally, I think Angel's fooling himself by thinking he's actually in love with Buffy," the other him said.

"What makes you say that?" Willow frowned.

"Just like last time around," Xander shrugged, "he got his moment of happiness when he slept with Buffy. Not when she told him she loved him. Not when they kissed. When they screwed. Then, after killing a lot of people, including some friends of ours, he got cursed again and spent a century in hell. When he got back, though, she immediately forgave him, still loved him... and that didn't give him a moment of happiness."

Willow gaped at the implications.
So, thoughts?

I personally agree, though I have to admit that I loathe Angel as a character, so it might be my bias speaking. Overall in Xander Centric fics that seems to be a common theme.

I don't really mind Angel that much as his character actually seemed to be an interesting evolution from a coward to actually being a hero type until late in Angel when he seemed to fall into Wolfram &Hart's trap.

Early on he was somewhat coming out of his shell (Xander was the one to actually drag him out kicking and screaming by crosspoint at the end of the first season). Then he had the curse kicked out from under him (He didn't know about the "escape clause" until it was to late).

For the love thing, I agree that it wasn't actually love (though it could become that later).

One thing to remember, though, is that the curse isn't broken by love, but by "a moment of perfect happiness". As anyone who has ever been in or out of love can tell you, love and happiness are not the same thing.

Didn't Angel have a flashback to when he was cursed that had the gypsie tell him about the excape clause?

I don't think so. They were going to tell him, but Spike, Darla, and Drusilla got to them first if I remember right.
