Buying Something Doctor Who Related

I have approx. 50 iTunes dollars from numerous gifts from last year's Christmas and my birthday.

I want to buy some Doctor Who episode or season, but am not sure which. I've seen the newest season of Doctor Who and most of the specials from the modern series, but I am interested in watching or listening to the classic Doctor Who series.

Suggestions?

Well, it depends, really. For me, the 3rd Doctor (Jon Pertwee) is my favourite, given it has UNIT, The Brig, the Master, and all of them, in colour.

That's a rather broad selection to choose from. I'd need to know your tastes before making a good rec. So just a few favorites.

The only complete season that's been released is the Key to Time with the 4th doctor.

2nd Doctor
The War Games

3rd doctor
Spearhead from Space
Inferno

4th
The Talons of Weng-Chiang
Horror of Fang Rock
The Invasion of Time
The Deadly Assassin

5th
Black Orchid

7th
Battlefield
Remembrance of the Daleks

Well, here's my favourites just to throw them into the mix as well.

1st: The Time Meddler.

2nd: Tomb of the Cybermen, The War Games. I'd put Power of the Daleks in here as well, but all the episodes are missing.

3rd: Terror of the Autons. Hell, get the entire Master season as soon as possible.

4th: Pyramids of Mars, Genesis of the Daleks, Horror of Fang Rock, Brain of Morbius

5th: The Five Doctors, Mawdryn Undead

6th: The Ultimate Foe, but really you should get all of The Trial of a Time Lord.

7th: Remembrance of the Daleks

I would also strongly recommend getting hold of a couple of Doctor Who audio plays at some point down the line, because many of them are very, very good.

I love a lot of it. The Weeping Angels are especially brilliant, Midnight is one of my favourite stories from the entire series old and new. And Dalek is awesome, especially if you listen to the Jubilee (an audio play).

However. There are a few stories that I hate with a passion. Daleks in Manhatten, The End of Time, Love and Monsters... yech.

Now don't get me wrong. There are a few stories in the classic series that I just plain didn't like either. Marco Polo, The Space Pirates, The Armageddon Factor, The Twin Dilemma... Not great stories, them. But hey, a show with such longevity is bound to have a couple of stinkers in its history.

Ah, the anwer to your question was that I feel it's a mixed bag. With RTD gone, and Moffat in charge, I feel that the show has vastly improved.

Based on the selction on the iTunes screen, these are the episodes that are available:

3rd Doctor:

Spearhead from Space
Terror of the Autons

4th Doctor:

The Talons of Wang-Chiang
The Deadly Assassin
Pyramids of Mars

5th Doctor:

The Caves of Androzani

Get all or just get a modern series?

I'd get those. Then see how long you can last watching Terror of the Autons without getting furious at the modern day portrayal of The Master. It takes me about a minute.

Really, that is not a bad selection at all.
