Naruto C-rank ideas

#1
My muse is being a bitch right and I can't really think of any ideas of C-ranks besides the Wave mission. I have a couple ideas but I'm hoping you can provide some inspiration on different C-ranks missions Naruto and his team could go on. What unique missions have you seen in fanfics?

We've got some older threads with various missions ideas:

Teaching at Orphanage
Rank : C
Objective : Teach Orphans how to read and write as well as basic mathematics
Secondary : Subversion/Conversion Skills Development/Practice in convincing orphans virtues of becoming a ninja
Duration : 1 month
Once a year, a skilled genin team or a chunin team will be assigned to the orphanage to teach basic skills in reading and writing, as well as mathematics. In addition, the selected team must be able to convince the orphans that choosing to join the academy is desirable and becoming a ninja is a good thing. An additional bonus will be provided at mission end during the academy intake, and calculated based on numbers of orphans that are of age who opt in on the ninja academy training. Please note that the recruitment has to be subtle, and coercion of any kind is severely discouraged.
Free Medical Examinations and Treatments
Rank: C to B
Primary Objectives: To give access to willing patients for aspiring Medical Ninja, allowing the Ninja to gain more experience in their line of work, and to help give the village a good Public Relations image.
Secondary Objectives: To give access to willing patients for aspiring Medical Ninja who wish to learn how to kill using their medical skills. Victims are not so much choosen from a list so much as a list of who they are not to touch is usually used. Only the Ninja in charge has access to this list, and knowledge of who is going to be in need of 'special' training.
Duration: Varies.

Writer's Notes
Let's face it, the Elemental Countries are barbaric lands, and they allow, if not encourage, some very barbaric behaviours. It might not happen often, but Medic-nin are valuable commodities, meaning that them not being shown how to kill and how to kill practically is foolish. And you need actual experience with such things, otherwise they just stay as academics. This mission gives the village the best of both worlds, giving the village good PR for their treating patients free of charge, and allowing the few Medic-nin who will not be confined within the village the chance to bloody their hands and to take as much experience as possible from it. Besides, how many people are going to look at their doctors and think that they're using you as a guinea pig in order to learn how to kill more effectively. :p
Tag/Follow the Leader
Rank: C to A
Primary Objectives: To follow a person for as long as possible, and to imitate your target and engage in conversations and activity for as long as possible without either raising suspicion or revealing that you are not your target.
Secondary Objectives: None, though some Ninja have gone as far as to make love to their targets partner to see how far they could go without alerting anyone that they were not who they were pretending to be.
Duration: Varies.

Writer's Notes
This would be a pretty fun, engaging, and challenging way for Ninja to build up their stealth and impersonation skills, and would likely be required for ANBU, though they would probably treat it as a game, even if it is very practical.
Construction/Demolition
Rank: B to S
Primary Objectives: To learn how to construct and deconstruct various structures.
Secondary Objectives: To figure out how to construct and deconstruct structures using the least amount of materials and time.
Duration: Varies

Writer's Notes
This would be required for any Ninja specializing in Hostage Recovery, ANBU, Fortifications Construction and Demolition, and Refuge management (allowing for the sheltering of Refuge's). These ninja would be rare, but they would always be in demand, either from Merchants or Diamyo wanting houses/fortifications/castles built for them (also allowing the village they come from access to the plans for those buildings in case the village ever needs it), towns in need of quick construction (due to an influx of refuges or due to natural disasters), or by ANBU units who would need their expertise for how to deal with fortifications and the like in Hostage Recovery and Assassination missions.
Bandit Suppression
Rank : B (with possible escalation to A rank)
Objective : Bandit Tracking and Elimination
Secondary : Surveillence of Territories
Duration : 1 Month
For the past three months, there have been reports of bandits striking at travellers and farms, as well as the smaller merchant convoys.

Your mission is to track down the reported bandits and eliminate them completely. Ensure that their camp is destroyed. Estimates place the bandits to be a band comprised of twenty of so men and women.

There have been no reports of jutsu use that is the earmark of missing nin who play at bandits. However, reports place that the leader of the bandits has not been seen in active combat, and may be a missing nin.

Writer's Notes
A combat type mission, bandits smacking and killing. It's a civic service as Lina Inverse would say. Recommended for two jounin with genin or chunin team.
Title of Mission: Herb Gathering
Mission Difficulty Rank (D)
Primary Objectives: Gathering a specific herb.
Secondary Objectives (if any): None
Duration: Probably between 1-3 days (depending on how much has to be gathered, how rare it is, etc.)
The stores of an specific herb have run low, leaving the employer in a bit of a bind as a new shipment would take too long and it's needed ASAP.
Title of Mission: Trap Clearing
Mission Difficulty Rank (C)
Primary Objectives: Remove all traps from a training area.
Secondary Objectives (if any): Try not to trigger said traps in the process.
Duration: 1-2 weeks (thoroughness would be the key here, not speed)
A ninja academy training area that was used by the academy to test trap-making skills needs to be cleared so that it can be used for more academy training.
Title of Mission: House Cleaning
Mission Difficulty Rank (D)
Primary Objectives: Clean a house.
Secondary Objectives (if any): Replace all spoiled food with fresh food. (keep your receipt, you'll be reimbursed)
Duration: 2-3 hours (possibly more, depending on the size of the mess, if any, left)
A couple is out of town, and need their house cleaned in the meantime.
Title of Mission: House Demolition
Mission Difficulty Rank (C)
Primary Objectives: Destroy a house.
Secondary Objectives (if any): Make sure no bystanders are injured.
Duration: 30 minutes to 2 hours
A man has purchased a house and found that it's essentially a pit.? Rather than pay to fix it up, he wants it destroyed so he can build a new house.? But he'd rather destroy the house with STYLE.

Most of those are D rank at best. IIRC, C -rank implies some possibility of harm or combat.

Per the wiki:

C-rank - assigned to more experienced genin or chnin. They are missions anticipated to have some combat involved with the possibility of injury to the shinobi performing it. Examples are guarding people, background investigations, or capturing or suppressing wild animals. The reward for a C-rank mission is between thirty thousand and 100 thousand ry.

Meh, I didn't come up with them. Wouldn't be too hard to come up with certain aspects that make it worthy of a C-rank.

How about escorting a grain convoy from Konohagakure to River Country? You could have some non-ninja guards who are resentful of the teams presence, a wealthy trade magnate who runs the caravans and the journey would let you do some world building about the wider Land of Fire.

Nice idea but I'm thinking something short term. I do like that demolations idea. I could have them implode a series of derelict houses in a neighboring town. C-rank because it involves the user of explosives. That should take a couple days.

Edit - thought about it, realized it wouldn't take up half a chapter.

I did have the idea of a follow-up mission to Wave to ensure all the bandits are gone since there reports of them haressing the villagers. It could be recon only, providing intel for the Jounins that would come in later or it could be recon and elimination.

Town leaders of a series of settlements outside of the Fire capital have reported a mysterious, scantily-clad woman with white hair touring restaurants and either refusing to pay her bills or paying in an unfamiliar, useless paper currency. Some witnesses report target has the ability to transform into a half-human, half-snake creature of some description, but little further information is available.

Track the target, determine her identity and goals, and capture or neutralize if necessary. Witness reports indicate limited chakra capacity, so target threat level is presumed to be low.

My thought is that if this is supposed to be a C rank to replace or reinforce Wave arc, then it should be chosen based on how you want it to affect Naruto and his relationships with other characters.

Here are some ideas partitioned into categories for your benefit.

Standard: missions that are pretty typical of what we've seen and what might be expected of Team Kakashi. That does not mean that the mission will play out in a "typical way" of course.

Guarding:
A merchant caravan running along usual trade routes requests a ninja escort. These are pros who trade their wares in many countries and are used to hiring ninjas. It's a large caravan with only a gennin team covering it so unlike Tazuna they will not doubt what these kids can do. Shit hits the fan when it turns out one of the merchants might be carrying something that somebody else might want. Perhaps Naruto's team faces a team from another village like Iwa or Kumo. Exactly how you build the complications should depend on what you want to get out of it. For example, Naruto could meet another jinchuuriki a little early. Or maybe it's something more simple. Maybe he's forced to make his first kill and it really rattles him.

Investigation:
Some people from a certain village have gone missing. There's no particular reason to suspect foul play is involved, but the villagers hire Konoha ninja hoping to get to the bottom of this anyway. Again, many ways in which this mission could get complicated and many possible things Naruto could learn. This type of mission is well suited to Team Kakashi as well since Kakashi himself is supposedly very smart, has the Sharingan and has his nin dogs, Sakura is supposedly very smart, and Sasuke is supposedly smart, comes from a family of military police and has his Sharingan. Naruto is actually the odd man out. In this situation his role would be to provide support. This makes this choice somewhat more interesting than the first (where Naruto would actually be the most effective of the three gennin due to Kage Bunshin allowing him to help the caravan and fight simultaneously) in that it highlights Naruto's shortcomings. Unless of course you are deliberately writing some kind of genius!Naruto.

Investigation2:
A building that is supposed to be abandoned (such as an old fort) suddenly is showing signs of habitation. Naruto and his team are sent to investigate in what is expected to be a routine mission chasing out hobos or bandits. Instead they wind up in way over their heads.

Investigation3:
Naruto's team is responsible for investigating a particular person or organization. This type of mission would be okay for Team Kakashi or Team Asuma in canon, but Team Kurenai and Team Gai are not as well suited for it, particularly Team Gai. The other three missions above can really be done independent of your choice for Naruto's team. This type of mission is probably routine for Konoha and someone like Kakashi might accept it as an opportunity to train his students. Unfortunately, this background check does not go so well as they discover things that should have been kept buried.

Political: another option is to create a mission with a political bend to it. We can talk about this from the POV of foreign relations (which can always play a role in any Naruto story), or we can talk about this in terms of court politics, which is sometimes irrelevant (in canon, for example).

For foreign relations, any of the previous missions can be tailored to include a fight with ninja from a foreign village and perhaps even real consequences. Maybe Naruto kills someone important and this causes a war to start. Maybe someone from Konoha gets killed off -- Naruto's sensei or a teammate. The fact that Naruto is a jinchuuriki may suddenly become common knowledge abroad, if it wasn't before, influencing how the Sandaime uses Naruto. This can in turn lead to court politics, if you let it.

Yukie:
If you're looking for a politically oriented mission, one option is to redo the Princess Yukie mission, except instead of doing a copy/paste of the movie's plot, attempt to do it realistically. No mystical seven colored chakra that instantaneously changes the country from winter to spring. Probably no movie or anything like that (the movie within a movie was silly -- it worked surprisingly well, but it was silly). Naruto ends up playing hero and saves the princess. If he's canonish, this probably inflates Naruto's ego a bit. Not to the point of douchebaggery, but certainly more than it should. Meanwhile it involves him in a major political incident.

Noble Evil:
Naruto and his team are sent to deal with a local disturbance, but find that the root of the issue is political in nature, with an obstructive bureaucrat or a local feudal lord who is outright despicable impeding them for what almost seems like no reason.

Unusual: a couple unusual ideas I've had.

Jiraiya:
Naruto and company are given a mission who ultimate benefactor is Jiraiya. He's giving Naruto this mission as a way of doing something without doing anything. This can even be before Naruto and Jiraiya have met. It's supposed to be a routine mission, but as you may expect by now, shit hits the fan. The mission itself could be something like a routine background check, or transporting ten thousand copies of Icha Icha. The result is the interesting part, with Jiraiya being involved unexpectedly. I'd recommend making Jiraiya's involvement unexpected for the audience as well as Naruto, so that when he does show up it comes as a genuine surprise.

Police Work:
Naruto and company are hired to work as security at a major festival. This can be played straight or for crack.

Final: one last comment is that you do not need to give Naruto a C-rank. You can always give him a D-rank the morphs into something beyond his pay grade. For example, Naruto's team may be asked to deliver a message to outside the village. It's not sensitive material, just routine mail or supplies that requires promptness.

Ultimately, it's the complication that hits the mission that will determine how effective the mission is at telling story.

Also, be careful not to fall into the trap of mislabeled a B-rank mission as C-rank. For a list of known mission ranks:
<a href='http://leafninja.com/mission.php' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>http://leafninja.com/mission.php</a>

Anything that potentially involves running across foreign ninjas, such as infiltration, escort against potential ninja threats, etc., would be B-rank or higher. A mission that definitively involves combat against hostile bandits would also be B-rank or higher. C-rank escort is for protection against the possibility of bandits, not for eliminating bandits outright. Such a mission would not normally be given to gennin.

Idea 1:

C-Rank
Naruto and company is sent to an excavation of an old ninja fort/base form the pre-village days, to deliver orders and supplies to the current team, and retrieve the teams latest report. As it turns out, it's an old Uzumaki base, before the founding of the whirlpool nation.

Mortalone seems to have some very good ideas.

Here are my 2 cents.

1: High Profile Individual has a stalker, can escalate anywhere from it's just some weirdo to OMG It's Fing SLENDERMAN!

2: High Priority Freight and Mail delivery. CAn go from secretly transporting something bandits want to Enemy Nin showing up. Depends on what's in the mail.

3: Security Check, basic. A bank, a store, a gallery, whatever, needs to have the security tested. Good training for con artist style tactics to physical thieving to assault and grab to High Value Target Protection.

4: Basic Public Relations. Road building to giving out "adverts" to whatever it is Ninjas need to do to get Business.

#3 poses an interesting scenario:

Naruto and company are hired to test the security of the bank. Unbeknownst to them and to their employers, a group of enemy ninja want something held in the bank and launch a heist. Now there are two competing groups trying to get into the vault, the bankers not knowing which one is real (supposing the test is performed as a blind study), and the two ninja groups fighting and causing havoc. Bonus points if the vault is the only part of the bank left standing at the end.

Ok, here's one: C-S Rank, depending on the situation, theres an important Samurai contest going on between two families, and one of them hires the team in order to guard their fighter, as they suspect the other family may have also hired ninja for that purpose.

this seems more a B-rank(potential ninja fight) than a C-rank(not too likely not-ninja fight)

Unless they are rich or from Iron country it wouldn't be S-rank.
