At some point in Smallville during S2 & 3 back when Clark and Lex are still good friends. Clark arrives home after one of his saving 'Lana from the monster of the day' acts only to discover his dad lying dead in the doorway and his mother spattered across the walls. As one can image Clark does not react well to this. Especially when his parents killer emerges from the kitchen to gloat on how much fun they had killing Jonathan and Martha or how they begged for their lives and such.

Although it takes Clark some effort to win and he doesn't entirely get away uninjured in the fight, the enraged Kryptonian literally rips his opponent apart. But their last words, on how their coven would avenged them weighs on Clark's mind.

. . .Well that and the fact that Clark had to finally resort to his heat vision to get the pieces of the creature to stop trying to wiggle their way back together.

Recognizing that he might need help to get revenge and to keep what he sees as a bunch psychopathic monsters from ravaging Smallville. Clark goes to the only two people he sees as capable and would be willing. Chloe Sullivan and Lex Luther. Chloe because she is his friend and has a strong interest in the weird, as well as the skills to discover the truth of what he just faced. And Lex who also happens to be a good friend of Clark's and possesses a ruthless edge that just might be needed. Long with a number of back door contacts.

Of course Lex once he's convinced that Clark hasn't snapped because of his parents death and not being an idiot would probably quickly grasp two things. One the only way that bunch vampires that make as big of messes that the Twilight ones do, could get away with it is if somebody or something is covering it all up. Something that will end up leading the group into conflict with the Volturi in time.

And two. That there's money to be made in this if he (or one of his scientists, more to the truth) can ever figure out how the Twilight vampires tick biologically speaking. A Potential source for immortality, super-soldiers, mass marketed paranormal abilities without the worst side effects that the Krypton mutants suffer from, ect. Something that Lionel who's also probably going to involve himself in things would also quickly realize and try to exploit.

Hmm? Would the Twamps actually be able to hurt him? They're neither magical nor are they full of Kryptonite, so it's not like they'd be able to exploit either of his weaknesses, unless they spit venom at his eyes or something.

They seem somewhat paranormal in nature. Combined with the fact Clark isn't going to be thinking all that straight when he goes full throttle for the kill which would allow it to get some good hits in. And that this point Clark is still growing into his powers and is on something of the low range compared to what he'll later be capable of which allows the vampire to be more of match for him in terms of physical abilities.

But the biggest reason that I saw Clark getting somewhat hurt is inexperience. At that point he wouldn't really know what he needed to know to put a Twilight vamp down for good.

Also while both are going to be unhappily surprised by the others capabilities, the vampire is probably a bit more used fighting for keeps against something that's near the seem ballpark as it physically, Clark not so much given how often he seems to be holding and only using just as much force as needed.

Which is part of what makes Clark so dangerous. With each fight he only grows more experienced and stronger and the more vampires that Volturi needs to gather up ifthey want to attempt to beat him.
