Dark Souls

I don't think we have a Dark Souls thread, so I figured I'd start one. For group formations/friendly invasions/help in the game.

My current question is for my Knight. New to the game and desire the drake sword. Problem is, I've shot 30+ arrows at the damn thing's tail and hacked away at it multiple times, yet it refuses to part with the sword.

Meh, Drake Sword. It makes the early game easy mode because shit dies in one hit, but it doesn't scale with any stats.

Well, I have access to the drake now, so I may as well try to get the sword while I'm using sword/board. My goal is to wield a Gravelord Sword and a dragonbone fist for parrying. Geared well enough, I can hopefully hold off the phantoms that will inevitably come when I go human again.

The gravelord sword is alright, but the stats for it are kinda wonky. Most PVE enemies will die before the toxic gets to them and it's kinda slow in PVP.

That said, character builder if you didn't know about it already

edit:

Your dex probably isn't high enough to properly use the short bow. The stats go: Str/Dex/Int/Fai

So it isn't doing enough damage.

My build calls for 20 dex by the end of it. Would that be enough for proper use?

Long as you have at least 24 strength, 20 should do for 2 handing it.

Also, are you shooting tail of the drake? Because that's where you get the sword. You don't have the means to kill it yet (it'll just refresh its health near death). You should go underneath the bridge and kill the two soldiers there first, then shoot the tail using the zoom mode (IIRC, two hand bow, press l2/lt).

Probably will take a bit of arrows, so make sure you farm up enough souls to keep yourself in arrows.

>shoot tail
>drake rages at bridge
>wait for it to fly back
>repeat until you has drake sword

Just for the future, since you want to use the gravelord sword, you'll need to collect this. 10 pieces will fully upgrade it (1+1+2+2+4).

Scaling for it is also kinda bad, with only minor str/dex boost (E/E/-/-). A decent first playthrough weapon, but you should consider upgrading to something better if you're playing far into New Game+ and beyond.

I'm kinda glad my data got fucked by my ps3 dying. My character build was pretty bad. I was going to make a faith based character but i had some misplaced talent points and was lvl 45 already and i just killed quellag.

Dark Souls is a game that might have benefited from a respec system, but at the same time, it might not. The finality of builds forced you to be wise with your souls when leveling, which fits the tone of prudence of the game. But on the other, screwing your build up could mean scrapping hours of work to fix one or two points.

It all comes down to whichever way would get the most play. From Soft thought the former worked best, so I guess that's that? *shrug.*

Shouldn't take much more than 15 large arrows, fyi.

It took about 25 on my assassin because I had the right stats to wield the shortbow. I went through 70+ on my knight without getting it. Ironically, my assassin can't wield the sword, but my knight could have.

If you have the Thief's Key, you can get a special sword by taking the shortcut to Blighttown, but an undead dragon guards it. He's pretty easy to kill even at level one, though.

Astora's Straight Sword, right? Yeah, I haven't gone down that path yet because the monsters there are supposed to be lvl 50+ according to something I read and I don't have the Thief Key. I have also decided to stay hollow for a while, since the last time I was human, I got invaded and destroyed. Until I'm ready, I shall look like jerky.

The shortbow requires 7 strength (technically just 4) and 12 dexterity. The knight starts out with 11 dex. Getting up to par should really not be a challenge. Also, remember that you can't hit just anywhere on the tail. The drake will fly off almost no matter where you hit, but you have to hit pretty close to the spike at the end of the tail in order to get the drake sword.

Edit: minor wording changes.

I didn't know that. I was hitting near the spot where the tail joins the body. On another note, I have met Solaire and gotten the white stone. Been using it to engage, as Solaire says, in "jolly cooperation" with players in Undead Burg. Were it not for the fact that my knight is meant for the Gravelord Servant covenant and my assassin the Darkmoon covenant, I would help people a few more times and then become a member of the Warriors of Sunlight.

Nothing wrong with helping people every now and then. Often times you'll find a sinner that you may get to punish later.

If you're good enough, helping out is easy souls, provided you get summoned and kill the boss of course.

I assume you're doing a dex/fai build so you can abuse Darkmoon Blade on your assassin?

I hadn't included faith just yet, no. I mostly get summoned to deal with the taurus demon.

Farming and summonings, basically. Trying to get as close to my build as I can before I have to move on to the next area.

When i went for the taurus demon i never saw any white signs on the floor. Wish i had since it took me 3 tries to kill him.

Were you in human form? And if you were and saw none had you been powerleveling? Because if you are too high about the coopers the signs won't show up.

Now I'm done with the bell gargoyles on my new guy (a pure melee tank), I'm going back to the Burg to fight Havel. I need his ring.

Sorry about the double post, but I have a quick question: I'm wanting to join the Gravelord Servant covenant (new greatsword with toxic bonus = win imo) and am wondering if that's a good choice. Compared to others, that is.

No, it's not.

As an expansion, you're just gonna have to kill the Covenant Leader at the end anyways, so the only reason to join it would be to get his spells.

That and if you want to be invaded by NG+ Phantoms.
