Do you want to write real (original) fiction?

I wanted to post this here because quite a few excellent writers post on these forums, and since this is an open call, it'd be a shame for the people here to miss out on the chance just because they didn't hear about it.

E.N. Publishing, an RPG company that I often freelance for, is getting ready to publish a series of new adventures and supplements, collectively called "The War of the Burning Sky." The head of the company has just put out an open call for someone to write a novel based on that in e-book format. This is a paid project, and has an option for more such novels in the future if the first one turns out well.

For the full text of the open call, click here.

I'd love to write original fiction. I'd even let people write fanfics about it, maybe even write something myself :p

However, at the moment, I don't have an original enough premise to make it happen :(

I do write some original(technically speaking  ) fiction myself. But three months? Aiyah! I don't write that fast, and writing for someone else like that... I don't think my deranged muse would appreciate it.

I've actually been working on one of those pieces recently, and was wondering how well it would be recieved here... and where to put it

A good opportunity. Sadly, I doubt many people here would take it up. There's a large about of difference between fanfiction and original fiction. Some writers like fanfiction because it's just easier to write with characters that are already well known, as they're not up to the task of meticulously creating and introducing new ones. *shrug* For me though, I write as more of a hobby, so this only appeals to me on a level of fantasy (the reality would be much harsher then I'd like ^^;; ). Besides which, I'm simply not that skilled.

Regardless, thanks for the heads up.

Raa, that's sort of the point of this project. The entire plot of The War of the Burning Sky has largely already been charted out. The post I linked to in the first post of this thread even says that you'd be working closely with the writers of the adventures regarding the novel.

The events are set, but things like the characters would be more under the author's control.

It's a relatively standard medieval fantasy world. More salient details are available, though you'd need to be the author first to get them (e.g. what empires are where, who rules them, current events, etc).

I concede that there's a lot less work in writing fanfiction than in original fiction, but I think this isn't quite that stark. As I mentioned above, a lot of details of this (location, events, etc.) are already set - it'd mostly be the characters themselves that the author would have to deal with (though that can be difficult too).

And I think you're very skilled, F1. ;)

Actually, I'd argue that the hardest part of the work is yet to be done, then. It's not extremely difficult to make a grandiose plot (I'm generalizing here, sue me. :p), but to make good, realistic characters, and know them well even to accurately portray them is... hard. Or perhaps it isn't for some people, but I find that to be the hardest part of original fiction, myself.

Still, I do see your point. In this case, it isn't all THAT far off from fanfiction writing.

Thank you. ^^ My confidence is lacking at times, it's nice to hear that my work is enjoyable... even if I don't believe it. :p

Well, I'd never be able to write an original story because I can't come up with many things of my own creation, especially characters. However, I did tell a friend about it as it does interest him since he is trying to become a writer and is broke, so thanks for putting the link for this contest up.

I have TONS of original fiction ideas running in my head. In fact, I have more original ideas, than I do with fanfic ideas.

However, none of them are even close to being written, much less published. Mostly due to my 'shortfall' as a fanfic writer in general (as fun as fanfic writing is, at the same time, I'm not expecting to make a profit off of it, and things like grammar are not 'as' important as they would be. :p).

As for this one, seems to be 'original fiction' with a direction. I usually go my own 'way'.

I'm almost done with an original novel that I've been working on for a few years now. Its a fantasy novel with a lot of things I've been working on

It sounds interesting, actually, but I'll have to pass. I don't exactly have the time, I'm very unfamiliar with the material, and worse, my writing is not yet up to par to do original writing like that.

But, I've been hoping to pursue writing something original for awhile now, but I find my ideas are either too half-baked or rip off too many current ideas. It's too bad, since I really want to do something more than just write fics.

I do believe I could be up to the task, given a bit more experience. I am pretty good at surprising plot twists, and I have mostly excellent grammar. However, one reason exists why I couldn't do it! Length!

In my whole time writing (6-7 months, lol), I have never made a chapter beyond 2800 words. And worst of all, I would have difficulty working with others. The power of the lazy is strong in me. I'd just give them my ideas and tell them to shove off and write it themselves, while I critique. While that may be a but inaccurate, generally when it comes to writing I would rather give my ideas to an experienced author and see what turns up. When I write it myself I tend to ruin the ending...because I already know it! Make sense?

I do write original fiction. Quite a bit of it, actually. However, unlike my fanfiction, I don't actually release it anywhere on the net (as I fully intend to get the stuff legitimately published one day.)

Unfortunately, it seems they have already ended the open call. I'd have jumped on it otherwise.
