Does anyone here play Magic: the Gathering?

If so, would you be willing to download Apprentice (preferred) or Magic WorkStation and have a few games with me when you have time? I'm getting rusty, and need the exercise...

And get my ass kicked from lack of knowledge about the game?

Sure no problem just point the way. :p

I know how to play and used to play in tournaments (a loooong time ago) but I never used the online one before, only the real cards, is Apprentice the one where you actually have to buy the booster packs with real money or not? If there's no money involved then I'd be happy to play a few rounds, it's been years since I last had a decent game.

There's no money involved in either program, it's 100% free.

Magic WorkStation supports the download of the actual card images, thus replicating the 'feel' much better, but Apprentice is slimmer, weighing in at less than 1MB as opposed to MWS's 9.5MB.

Lemme know if and when you DL either. Also, familiarize yourself with the new cards and banned lists. Things changed a lot in the last few years.

I quit at around exodus...it would be too tiring to familiarise myself with all the new cards, rules and abilities available today.... -_-

Yah, that was pretty much why I quite as well, it got too tiring spending all that money to build up a deck and then finally get my deck all set up and then be unabel to use it and have to start all over again, man I really hated that. Question about how the online version works though, how do you get new cards? Is there a sort of 'point system' used in place of money to buy booster packs or what?

In the programs I have linked, there's no limit with cards - you can use anything from Alpha to today. So you can build any and all decks you want, pretty much.

in the actual Magic Online, you need to actually buy cards, and they aren't even RL cards, so I say fuck that. The programs I suggested > it.

I still only have apprentice, tho.

From what I gather, you can use any card you want in apprentice - I used it before to plan out my decks. You could have the entire classic power9 cards etc.

That pretty much covers it, yes.

Neat. I never got into magic the gathering even though I do collect the cards at random intervals. I just collect it for neat artwork and whatnot. I actually use a few of them as templates for attacks, creatures and other nicknacks =D

Damn...like I don't have enough things I need to divert my attention to and play *bites lip* I used to be a huge Magic fan; got several detentions once for playing it in class instead of paying attention to the teacher. Just got tired of it when they started changing the rules with every new expansion. Ended up spending more time arguing about whether or not you could use a certain card or do this or that thing than we did actually playing. I still have a few decks sitting around somewhere though.

Hell, if I get bored my next day off I might just get Apprentice; let you know if I do GH.

Heh, I intend to get Apprentice or the other one eventually, it just has to wait until I have some free time because I really am pretty booked solid right now (not to mention my mind isn't exactly functioning at 100% currently).

Well I also have Apprentice... only because Moshulel wanted to see if it will work. I have no intention of actually playing it (and might get rid of it one of these days). Not to mention, it didn't quite work during the test. <_<

It's ironic that my best decks back then were also the cheapest to assemble. -_- So my heart didn't ache too much when our school teacher started a huge crackdown and confiscated all our decks that fateful day...

Reviving the thread:

Anyone playing Magic at the moment? I really need some combat experience (nevermind that i'm too lazy to read a tutorial).

i haven't played actively for a while, the last time was at the dissention pre-release. I'm moving from my crappy small town to a much larger city soon, so I will likely start playing heavily again. I haven't tried apprentice yet, I heard it is good, tho.

also, the new set coldsnap is awesome just for it's retro appeal. snow-covered lands again after all this time? awesome.

dang, this makes me want to crank out a "Ranma in Dominiara" fic. what do you think? would he be a benalish hero? I can see kasumi as the samite healer, akane as a keldon warlord, nabiki would be the prodigal sorceror, ryoga something green and stompy, happi could lead some very perverse phyrexians, it could be sweet.

Ranma would be red. He's too connected to total chaos and arrogance to be anything but red. :p
