The Eternal Darkness of a Singularity

Millenia ago... Millenia upon millenia ago, the Ancients ruled all. Their power was unchecked, not one race in existence dared to contest their rule. Save for one. Teaming up with the one Ancient who was sympathetic to them, a race threw off their oppressors by developing a sapient AI designed for one thing, the removal of the Ancients from the veil of reality. These sapient AI became known as the Reapers.

Unfortunately, the Reapers saw their masters become compromised, driven mad by the power of the Ancients, but they did not falter in their mission. The Ancients and all who associated with them must be wiped clean. Culled. Reapers could counteract the madness of the Ancients through a process known as Indoctrination, and when they so chose, they could and would release their masters from this indoctrination. As stated before, their masters became compromised, but the Reapers completed their mission, and they removed the influence of the Ancients from the universe for a time.

They allowed organic life to develop again, and again the Ancients tried to extend their influence, but this time the Reapers were ready. Having built the mass relays and the Citadel in preparation for the need of a culling, the Reapers performed their task once more, and they took no chances, no risks. Advanced organic life was wiped out to begin anew, lest the Ancients have their attention drawn.

This cycle repeated for hundreds of thousands of years. Until the Reapers once more detected the Ancients' influence. Xel'lotath had been summoned, and Chattur'gha had fought her off. At relativistic speeds, the news took nearly 200 years to reach the Reapers at their point in the Galaxy... and the Reaper known as Sovereign was sent out to investigate and prepare for the newest culling.

Unfortunately Sovereign was ultimately destroyed by a human Spectre known as Commander Shepard and the Alliance and Council militaries, and due to this, the Reapers feel the first true negative emotion in their existence. Fear. Fear of failure, fear of death... fear of the Darkness.

In the cold quiet of space, the Darkness comes... The Darkness Screams. And Commander Shepard, last descendant of the Roivas family is about to receive their birthright.

The Darkness is Coming, and it will damn us all!

Okay, obviously the concept here is a Mass Effect/Eternal Darkness cross. Shepard getting the Book.

The idea is what if the Reapers were there for a reason? What if they were a prophylactic against something worse? The Ancients were that which is worse in this fic idea.

I don't know if it ever will get written, but I had to get the basis for the idea out along with its background.

And in the unseen places, Mantorok rots.

And in the unseen places, Mantorok schemes.

And in the unseen places, Mantorok smiles and laughs.

And in the unseen places, Mantorok sleeps, and dreams.

Actually, I have a question. Why does Shepard need to be a Rovias? As much as the generational thing is used, I don't think you need the "last descendant" bit.

Or am I forgetting a salient plotpoint from ED?

Roivas family tends to get the book if they're around. (S)He really doesn't need to be a Roivas, but if there is a Roivas around they'd likely get the book.
