FanFiction.NET Feed Issue

Well...

I am uncertain how many people on this forum are using them, but FanFiction.NET is in the process of changing the format of it's feeds in how they display. I happen to like it.

However, because of this, and depending upon what you use to view feeds, every feed they have is showing as having been updated. They've been tweeking the format slightly, and I've had this happen twice to me in the last 20 minutes, so until it is stabilized, you might get a surprise.

Of course, it would be nice if they were fixing the other feed issue I've had in the last week, that of older author stories showing as being updated when they are not.

While we are at it, I would like the promised story feed support added, but that is likely wishful thinking on my part, despite at one point having been told by a tech there they would in fact 'eventually' be added.

At any rate, just figured I would give a heads up.

What do you mean by story feed support?

FanFiction.NET, MediaMiner.ORG, and a few other sites all have Author RSS/ATOM feed support, and lists all stories by that author under that link that they have on the site.

However, FicWad.COM and Darkscribes.ORG, for example, have Author and *Story* RSS/ATOM feed support. Meaning, if their is a single story you like by an author that has a ton of tories that do not interest you, you can use the Story specific Feed, and not the author one. The benefit is that you do not get updates for all those stories by him / her you are not interested int, but only the one you are.

On a related note,

1. I noticed FanFiction.NET adopted Catagory feeds today. I did send an e-mail about a flaw in the feed links though. The new catagory ones have next to the 'atom' part 2 backslashes '//', not one like everywhere else.

2. I e-mailed them on the lack of story specific feeds, and they have no current plans to add them, citing basically that their current systems are adaqute for their needs.

The first part has already been added to my auto feed support of my program, but the second is a disappointment.

C2 feeds are still only by 'Added Date', too. I was hoping they let us have C2 feeds by update instead.

Over 1000 fics in my C2, and the feed STILL only shows me when I add a new one. If I want to check to updates to old fics, I have to vist the actual page.

Huh...

Lets see...

C2 feeds have the maximum cap I think of 50 in the feed, same as the Just in feed. Catagory feeds are at a cap of 200. When you factor feeds are supposed to be just for recieving updates, that works ok. Author feeds would seem unlimited, or if they are, I've not found it.

I have no clue what you are referring to, as I use SharpReader, and I can sort by Title and Date.

Regrettibly, the way FanFiction.NET set up the feeds, I cannot seem to do so by author in SharpReader, though that may be a limitation of SharpReader.

I'm using Firefox's Live Bookmarks. In other words, I'm not actually using a reader. That usually works fine for me.

However, this is less useful for C2 feeds which show only the last 50 fics ADDED. You can sort by update, but it will NOT show a fic added before the last 50 when it updates.

In other words, viewing the C2 feeds won't let you see updates on anything except the last 50 fics you added to said C2. This is totally useless, since it's MY C2, I don't need to get feed updates on what I added, I want updates on what's been updated, because I'm using the c2 in place of my old favorites list (which can only have 150 fics total).

Instead, I just told my C2 to sort by update and then bookmarked it like that. It works well enough, I suppose, but now I end up checking the page like every 10 minutes.

Ahhh... I see...

That is not something I would have run into, as while my program supports creating feeds if I have C2 links, I currently (and except testing my program with them, have never) had a C2 link, since I never use them.

Hmmm... You might want to rethink this setup, a selection of author and or catagory feeds/links might be far more efficient than a C2. Ive not seen your C2, so I cannot say.

No matter, your system, use what works for you.

I feel your pain, Christopher Robin. I use my C2 the same way.

You know, it just now occurs to me that it's insanely easy to use a service like Feed43 to generate a feed from the update page for you. (Here's mine.)

Just a note...

I just now got a further reponse back from FanFiction.NET stating they fixed the feed link inconsistancy, but stated it would take at least 30 minutes to take effect.

I'm about to go to bed, so I'll check it tomorrow after work.

I figured I would mention it in case anyone made them already and notices them stop working.
