What if a game with a virtual reality system similar to "The World" came out, set in Final Fantasy Seven's universe? The name would by "Final Fantasy Online" (Final Fantasy 11 never was developed in this alternate universe.)

Takeshi, a 19 year old Japanese male, buys the game and creates a character for himself named "Cloud Strife". Within the first half hour of gameplay, he is pulled into a group of role-players, who call themselves "AVALANCHE". During the time he's along with them, he learns about their reasons why they fight against an enormous guild that calls itself "Shinra" Shinra's guild is so large that they own their own town, (Midgar, obviously) while manipulating the rest of the game's world from there. While 99% of the players of "Final Fantasy Online" see Shinra as the good guys, AVALANCHE wants to overthrow Shinra, and force them to disband. Shinra's members are capable of manipulating player characters, sometimes inducing comas in real life, as well as stealing all of a players real life property through computer hacking. AVALANCHE is a guild of players that have all suffered one way or another at the hands of Shina, and are fighting to destroy it.

I got the basic idea for this in between watching ".Hack//Roots" and playing "Crisis Core" and "Final Fantasy 7". I have lots of ideas for this, and I was wondering what people thought of the basic idea. If people are curious, I'll flesh the idea out more.

Just a note though, the game wouldn't follow the storyline of FF7 exactly, at times using concepts from the .hack// series, so it wouldn't be so predictable.

it's interesting, but would take copius amounts of work to succeed.

For instance, would the key of the twilight play a part?

What of Sephy

stuff like that will play merry hell with anything you try, so be sure to have a good plan before you start.

Best of luck.

While there is no Key of the Twilight in this idea, the closest thing to it would probably be "Jenova Cells", which would allow a PC to surpass the limits set by their profession.
'Cloud' has an run-in with an ex-SOLDIER 1st Class, named 'Zack'. Zack happens to save Cloud from getting killed by a couple of monsters, and befriends the rookie player.

Sephiroth is a veteran player, SOLDIER 1st Class. His character would be like a godlike version of the leader of the Crimson Blades in .hack//

The hardest part that I can imagine so far is how to work the relationships that the characters had before into the game, such as Tifa and Clouds. My current idea is to have them know each other in real life, but not know it when they first see each other.

I don't want to give away too much of the plot this early, but what do you think so far?

a tiny tidbit.

.hack//Fantasy

Chapter 1

Disclaimer: Etc. Etc.

ôAlright sir, your total comes out to nine thousand, five hundred and fifty yen. Would you like a bag for your purchases?ö Minokawa Takeshi shook his head before gathering the items on the counter in his arms and walking out the door.

*Twenty minutes later*

Takeshi clicked on the option to start the game immediately after installation. ôJust make sure this new game doesnÆt cut into your homework time.ö Came his mothers voice from the next room over. The nineteen year old boy grumbled quietly for a moment before answering with an acquiescing grunt. That out of the way, he plugged the headset and the controller into his computer tower. With some trepidation, he placed the headset over his eyes, so that it fit snuggly on his ears, as the manual had instructed.

Takeshi was still a little curious about how this all worked. Did the game send signals directly to his brain, and receive them in return? Or was there some other system that allowed it?

He was pulled from his momentary pondering by a bright light appearing in the headset. The light, thankfully not bright enough o blind him, resolved itself into a blue screen with a menu for creating a new character. Starting with the name, Takeshi decided to begin with something simple. Using his thumbs, he entered in the name ôCuroudoö. Most of the people he might play with would automatically call him ôCloudö At least, he hoped so anyways.

Once that was complete, he selected the ôChoose Character Classö option, which brought up a list of possible character classes as well as a brief description of each. After considering quite a few options, he finally chose the class ôClaymoreö, on gut instinct more then anything else.
