They could just make it so you can save Aerith. That wouldn't be too difficult to cover as long as the game lets the current canon ending exist as an option.
Supposedly - and this is just a rumor I am repeating - there really was supposed to be a "Save Aerith" optional quest line, but the production team ran out of time and money, so they couldn't implement it.

I dunno how I'd feel about a "Save Aerith" route though.

To be honest, given my preferences, I would rather have a Yuffie Ending available all the way through to the end.

I hope they explain the plot better in the remake, because it was confusing as fuck to me when I first played through it. For example, did you know that Sephiroth didn't actually murder Aeris directly? That was actually Jenova shapeshifted into Sephiroth, being remotely controlled by Sephiroth. I sure didn't know that until several replays later and reading the Final Fantasy wiki!
...Wait, what?

What, you weren't aware of that, AJ? They made it quite explicit that Sephiroth--the REAL Sephiroth--was entombed in that materia formation in Crater, made even more explicit in Cloud's pieced-together flashback, where Cloud hurled him into the Lifestream. All instances of Sephiroth met before then were Jenova or pieces of Jenova warped into Sephiroth's form, because Sephiroth had taken control over Jenova's cells while inheriting her own desires and instincts. It's also why when "Sephiroth" departed after murdering Aeris, the piece that fell from the sky after him resulted in the Jenova LIFE boss fight.

Thanks for that link. Yuffie has been a favorite of mine for a while now.

As for the remake, maybe they could include multiple endings and AUs. FF7 has a canon ending that already got explored plenty with those novellas, movie, and DoC game.

...Though that does make me wary that someone will make a Redemption Sephiroth DLC...

I gotta admit, I'd be totally fine with a lot of other changes I wouldn't like if they make the affection points effect more than the Gold Saucer Date.

Like, an actual Yuffie route would be amazing. Even just having a different scene before the finale other than the standard Tifa one, or changes in the ending cutscene would be cool.

Basically another way of describing the main antagonist of FF7 is that it's equal parts Jenova and Sephiroth.

The only real difference is what shape is being fought.

[The only thing that truly leads to criticism is that it implies you only fight Sephiroth during the very final moment, and both Bizarro and Saferoth are still Jenova as well as Sephiroth.]

Fuck Jenova LIFE. Only fight in the game where you didn't have a battle theme... and it had to be that fight and using aerith's theme. ;_;

The first time I played through, during the Jenova LIFE fight, I couldn't keep it together, I lost because I was distracted by my own crying.

I heard the rumor too, I believe it was started by people who were messing around with the debug mode and using it to add Aeris back into their party after her death. They noticed that Aeris actually can appear in a few cutscenes if she's in your party, and even has one or two spoken lines! (I believe one of them is she'll say something unique after the snowboarding mini-game.)

From what I read though, the general consensus is that she wasn't intended to actually live, but rather she was originally going to die later in the plot. Because eventually she does stop appearing altogether in plot events and there's an inaccessible area in the Northern Cave that can only be gotten to through the debug menu that plays her theme.

I agree that there should be a Yuffie route. Aeris is my favorite girl, but if she has to die then Yuffie is a good second choice. Tifa was always kind of a boring character and she has a lame character design. (what kind of martial artist wears a miniskirt? And who wears a miniskirt with suspenders, period? Her Advent Children outfit is so much better.)

daniel_gudman: Funnily enough, Jenova∙LIFE is considered to be a really easy boss fight for that point in the game for that exact reason.

It was basically impossible for playtesters to manage to beat the boss after her death, so they had to keep toning it down until it entered the realm of doable.

Yeah. FF VII needs more dating sim elements. The way they set up the plot and girls in the game it's kind of a natural fit. I get why they didn't originally, but it would just work in a modern adaption.

Though, honestly, Yuffie was one of the gag dates. Aerith and Tifa are supposed to be the 'real' dates, everyone else is just there to let you know you suck at being nice to girls. Barret's date is pretty hard to get unless you're actively trying to be a dick. Yuffie is underage and treats you like the kid she is, it's supposed to seem both adorable in her case and kind of pathetic for Cloud.

That said, it would be great if they did add multiple endings and saving Aerith netted you the bad ending where the world is destroyed by Meteor because she wasn't in the Life Stream to help you out. That would really rub some noses in it while staying true to the original plot. It would be Square trolling fans, but it would be one of the best trolls of all time because it makes so much sense.

Tifa is supposed to look like a low class Bar Maid. Hence the suspenders and miniskirt. It also explains her fighting style, which is really more brawling than martial arts.

She's a tough as nails low income bar owner who is also supposed to be unusually hot. Her design and traits are centered around that archetype. The only person she's really tender or feminine with is Cloud. With everyone else she's quick to fight, serious, and defensive.

It all makes sense if you think about her that way.

Also remember that Tifa got the miniskirt because they wanted to give her a visual contrast from Aeris, who wore a longer skirt.

Yep, 50 polys doesn't give you a lot to work with. Especially when you need 10 of them just for a character's boobs.

I'd bet the Gold Saucer will be shinier than ever. Also, the K.o.t.R and SUPERNOVA animation will be longer, so long in fact, you be done cooking and eating dinner and they'd just be halfway through.

I remember one time for shits and giggles I hooked up quadra with kotr (I think you had to use quadra-summon and countermagic-summon to do it) against iirc a WEAPON and it proc'd.

Literally 8 minutes later the counter attack was done and the weapon was dead.

So basically Squeenix is gonna skip an FF6 remake

F you Squeenix

That said, there's evidence posted somewhere on the web that Aeris was originally supposed to die in the Northern Crater as opposed to the City of the Ancients. If nothing else, just for a sense of newness, they should go with that plot direction in the remake. Troll people into thinking she's not gonna die in the City of the Ancients, then off her later.

That could be fun. Just to get the mega fans hopes up and then dash them and twist the knife.

There's been rumblings that FF VI might be next in line for a remake actually. Nothing concrete, but Nomura mentioned that game specifically in an interview somewhere and said he'd like to see it done in the future. It sounded like it might be a hint that there is internal talk of going in that direction in the future, maybe. If FF VII is the hit Squenix and the fans are hoping for be, you can bet on it.

Honestly, that's the FF game I'd like to see get the update treatment the most.

I would love Six. That was the last game I played on SNES along with Lufia, it always has a spot in my heart.

It wasn't a rumor. If you used a cheat, you could access the key items needed to bring Aerith back to life. I don't know if you could watch a cutscene of doing it or not.

Either way, once you brought her back, you could continue with the game as normal until the end cutscene when the game crashes due to not having the alternate ending made.

I remember this rumor. It's an early example of trolling on the internet. It was usually followed by a list of impossible or nearly impossible steps that seemed plausible in the game.

Something like, Beat Emerald Weapon in a certain number of turns and finish it off with a specific low level summon and get a drop chance for a certain item, or finish a chocobo race with a certain color chocobo in a time limit that was a few milliseconds below the lowest possible time and get the item as a reward.

Good times.

Ah yes the glory days, when trolling was an art form.

Back when the only people trolling were those that were good at it, and none of the scrubs knew of it- the good days of trolling.

You can get a Mew man, it's hidden under that truck past the SS Anne!
