Bump.

Yahoo! has sent the final notice. If there's anything you want to save, you've got a bit over two weeks to do it.

What is interesting, is they imply they themselves will not keep a backup.

Given the incredibly small bandwidth limits and site size limits, the entirety (EVERYTHING) posted on Geocities can't be more than a few terabytes.

Yahoo is just being cheap; keeping Geocities online indefinitely can't be costing them any real money.

Let's have a moment of silence, shall we?

For today, is the day that Geocities closes.

...

The end of an internet era is upon us.

I feel saddened at the loss of geocities. I'll miss the simple websites and the curious setup they had. I say it with great pride, that I was present for most of the time geocities was up. Let us remember it with fondness.

Nostalgia will reign supreme every time I look at my bookmarks.
Farewell Geocities, you will be missed.

Will we at least be able to get some fics from the web archives?

And doesn't this mean that we're losing a lot of the classic Ranma fics that were on Geocities at the time? I feel extremely worried at the moment.

Internet Archive can still pull Geocities sites up, however they may be old versions and it's not guaranteed there'll be a newer copy.

As a interesting note, I just learned the following about Google, which I consider interesting timing:

Zorch Central - Home² > ²News Updates² > ²
Zorch Central Has A New Home
posted 4 hours ago²² by Michael Haney Geocities is now gone, and so is Google Pages.á Google switched Google Pages users over to Google Sites.á Its a bit more full-featured than Google Pages, but doesn't support JavaScript which sucks but oh well.á This is the new page and I'll be updating it and making changes over time.á The look and layout will be similar to my old site.á The Google Pages URL will still work but your browser will be redirected to this new address.

As for new fan fiction updates I'll have the new chapter of "Beneath A Crimson Sky" ready in a day or two.

It seems like Yahoo missed some geocities pages.

Looking through my old bookmarks, I noticed that Marietsy's Site seems to be running still. Is there a reason for this, or is it just that it hasn't been deleted yet? Are there other sites like this?

might be your cache or redirects?
Not cache since links I've never been to work, and computers at school(which require logging into a server and don't save a cache) also show it. Do you see it?

Their database cleaning must not have been thorough...
It's more likely this:
If you're a Yahoo! GeoCities Plus customer, your friends and family can still view your web site as usual. However, you can no longer access your files or update your pages with GeoCities tools. To update your site, you'll need to upgrade to Web Hosting.
(Taken from here.)

Although they didn't start taking down sites until the 27th around 2 to 4 PM Atlantic Time.
